Germany is one of the iodine deficiency countries in Europe. Marine fish and its products can considerably contribute to the iodine supply via food. The short review gives an overview on the iodine content in fish and other marine species and discusses the influence of house hold cooking and other kitchen preparations. The iodine content in marine fish depends on the species and varies considerably at high level. Lean fish species have an average iodine content of more than 100 μg I / 100 g edible part. The recommended allowance for adults of dietary iodine of 180-200 μg can be covered by the consumption of one marine fish portion per day.

Earlier investigations with 13.69 m (45') four seam shrimp trawl indicated the optimum depth of belly to be 70 meshes. Present communication details further experiments on similar lines with a bigger shrimp trawl of size 17.07 m (56') without overhang. The results obtained have not only given corroborating evidence in support of the earlier findings but also helped in arriving at a relationship that for a given stretched width of belly ‘L’ the stretched depth of belly could be either 2L/5 or 40% of ‘L’ with an allowance of ± 2 meshes.

Four-month-old S. niloticus breeders were fed with dry pellets containing 20-50% crude protein and the frequency of spawning involving removal of egg from the mouthbrooding females and growth were determined. When the diets contain high quality proteins from fish meal and soybean oil meal and the amounts of daily food allowance are at satiation level, the influence of increasing dietary crude protein on spawning frequency involving egg removal from the brooder and growth may not be significant.
