African Clarias taxonomy: Implications for the field worker

The taxonomy of African Clarias was reviewed. It was emphasized that much confusion still exists in this taxonomy. The major sources of this confusion were outlined. There are now only about 33 valid species of the 122 original species so far described in Africa. The implications of the present state of African Clarias taxonomy for the field worker were highlighted. In particular the need for the field worker to be an informed amateur taxonomist in addition to the possession of a good knowledge of the biology of his fish was emphasized. Fish handling, processing and storage in Uganda: the role of the extension worker

The handling and processing of fish in Uganda has until recently been carried out exclusively by the artisanal fishermen and fish processors. Their operations have left much to be desired as the product is often of low quality 'and its keeping time is limited. The handling of fresh fish has been without refrigeration but with the recent establishment of commercial fish processing plants a cold chain of fish distribution is being set up for domestic and export markets. Some of the fishermen are beginning to ice their catch immediately after reaching the shore. It is hoped that fishmongers will increasingly find it more profitable to market their products iced. This will make fish available to a large sector of the population and in the process there will be reduced post-harvest losses.

The improved management of small-scale cage culture in Asia: final technical report

The purpose of the project is to develop sustained small-scale cage fish culture in inland and coastal waters through improved understanding of the social, institutional and resource environment of resource poor groups. Two Asian countries, Bangladesh (inland systems) and Vietnam (marine), were studied with this workshop bringing together both sides of the project together with representatives of collaborative institutions, government departments and universities. Addressing the overall aim of producing guidelines for the planning and extension of cage aquaculture in Asia a combination of group work and plenary discussion was conducted producing the following outputs. 1) An assessment of cage aquaculture potential, 2) Development options for small-scale cage culture, 3) A review of tools and methodologies and 4) Policy initiatives for sustainable cage culture development. Key issues raised were the use of outputs as a guide to be adapted to regional circumstances to facilitate farmer and extension worker discussion and not as a rigid methodology. The degree of linkage between development, research and government institutions was also considered a crucial factor in benefiting the research and development of cage culture at the local, regional and national level and vital in affecting the future policies by both development and government institutions.
