ENGLISH: It is important to the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission to know whether the anchoveta (Cetengraulis mysticetus), the principal tuna bait species in the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean, is composed of one or several populations. Earlier research indicated that, on the basis of significant differences in certain meristic counts, populations of this species in six of the major baiting localities between Mexico and Peru, should provisionally be considered as separate stocks. Since that time, additional collections of anchovetas have been obtained from these and other intervening localities. Purpose of the present study was to confirm the results of the earlier work, and to determine whether the differences in the meristic counts persisted from year to year, as well as to examine certain morphometric characters of the fish from these areas, and to learn whether the populations from the other localities are also separate entities. Based on air temperature data from three sites of West and East Greenland, on ice charts for the area 54°N, 71°N and 20°W, 70°W, and on CTD profile observations around Greenland, the annual variability of climate is shown. Mean monthly air temperature data from Nuuk/West Greenland reveal the long-term interannual changes of air temperature anomalies. The warming trend which was observed during November, December 1995 was maintained into 1996 for about five months. Thus, spring warming of the near surface water layers, especially on the shallow bank areas off West Greenland has been favoured. As a result of mild air temperatures over most of 1996, sea ice conditions were about normal around Greenland and off eastern Canada. Subsurface observations indicate considerable warming of the 0-200 m water layer off West Greenland. The thermal anomaly of this layer amounts to +1.59K, which is the second highest value on record since the warm 1964 event. The warmer than normal conditions as recorded since November 1995 off East and West Greenland, point at intermediate warming which is characteristic of the second half of the recent decades. The long-term trend of air temperature anomalies off West Greenland points, however, still at cooling, a trend which is persistent since the early 1970s. As the potential driving mechanism for the intermediate warming in the Labrador Sea area, the sea level air pressure gradient between Iceland and the Azores is identified. The 1996 value of this gradient, the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) Index, is strongly negative and this represents the flow of mild air masses from the midlatitude Atlantic Ocean to the Greenland/Labrador Sea region. Accordingly, air temperature anomalies indicated unusual warming during the month of February which amounted to >2K in the region of Baffin Land, Labrador and Greenland.

Pelagic fish (except for tuna) are landed in Sierra Leone mainly by the artisanal fishermen. The two most important species are Sardinella and Ethmalosa.Deep-sea species are normally exploited by purse seiners of foreign countries. The landings of artisanal fishermen largely comprise Sardinella eba.Landing data for Sardinella landed at Tombo and Goderich, and for Ethmalosa at Tombo, are presented in tabular form. Collection methods are described, with a definition of the unit of fishing effort, and a description of the gear used. The landing data are discussed with particular attention to fishing effort, catch per unit effort, and price per ton

From 25 November until 8 Deeember 1994, a sea-going workshop with the above title was carried out on board RV "Walther Herwig IlI" under the umbrella of the Baltie Marine Biologists (BMlJ) and the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). Under the co-convenorship of the first two authors of this paper, 11 seientists from 8 of the 9 countries bordering the Baltic Sea (except Sweden) actively involved in research monitoring into fish diseases/parasites participated. The main reason for holding the workshop was that, although fish disease monitoring programmes on the abundance and spatial distribution of fish diseases/parasites are being carried out by some of the countries bordering the Baltic Sea, there is still a striking lack of seientific information as compared to other seas, such as the North Sea. Moreover, since new fish disease monitoring programmes have recently been started (mainly by the new Baltic republics Latvia and Estonia, which recently became ICES-member countries) or are planned for the near future (Lithuania), BMB as weil as ICES felt the need for a interealibration and standardization of methodologies applied during fish disease/parasite surveys for the specific conditions in the Baltic Sea. Therefore, the major objectives of the workshop were -to obtain information about the disease/parasite prevalence in Baltic (Platichthys flesus) and other abundant fish species along a transect from the western (Mecklenhurg Bight) to the eastern (Gulf of Finland) Baltic Sea to be used as a baseline for future studies, -to intercalibrate methodologies applied for sampling, diagnosis of diseases/parasites, reporting and analyses of disease data, -if necessary, to recommend standard methodologies to be used for fish disease/parasite monitoring programmes under the specific conditions in the Baltic Sea. Although the data have yet not been completely analyzed, there is indication for some pronounced spatial trends regarding the prevalence of certain diseases/parasites, mainly for Iymphocystis and skin ulcerations in flounder but also for diseases and parasites of cod (Gadus morhua) which can be seen in figures 2 and 4. Recommendations for standard methodologies will later be published elsewhere.

In a slow flow, on a smooth uniform substratum, a limited bed allows the existence of currents slow enough for benthic invertebrates. These conditions rarely occur naturally. The investigations carried out in this work aimed, on an intermediary scale, to define the influence of irregularities in the substratum on flow near the bottom. The substrata used were made of glass marbles. The investigations were carried out in a transparent channel of 70 cm in length and a rectangular section 10 x 5 cm. The data was analysed to study the general evolution of flow in terms of average speeds and the appearance of the turbulence near the bottom.

With the aid of the German Research Association in the central programme 'Sand movements in the German coastal region', an investigation into the current conditions in the shallow water areas of the coasts of the south-eastern North Sea between Sylt and the Weser estuary was carried out by the author. Foundations of the work are 19 continuous current recordings in five profiles normal to the coast from years 1971 to 1973. Off the coasts of the south-eastern North Sea varying tidal currents impinge; they are currents whose directions may vary periodically through all points of the compass. They are caused by the circulating tides in the North Sea (Amphidromien). The turning flow movement experiences a deformation in the very shallow coastal waters, and as it happens the flow turning movement in the case of high tide continues right up onto the outer flats, while here and in the fore-lying shallow water areas around the time of low water (on account of the small depths of waters), there prevails a more variable current. A result of this hydrodynamical procedure is the development of counter currents. This partial translation of the original paper provides the summary of this study of of the mudflat areas between the Elbe and Weser.

The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (IATTC) staff has been sampling the size distributions of tunas in the eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO) since 1954, and the species composition of the catches since 2000. The IATTC staff use the data from the species composition samples, in conjunction with observer and/or logbook data, and unloading data from the canneries to estimate the total annual catches of yellowfin (Thunnus albacares), skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), and bigeye (Thunnus obesus) tunas. These sample data are collected based on a stratified sampling design. I propose an update of the stratification of the EPO into more homogenous areas in order to reduce the variance in the estimates of the total annual catches and incorporate the geographical shifts resulting from the expansion of the floating-object fishery during the 1990s. The sampling model used by the IATTC is a stratified two-stage (cluster) random sampling design with first stage units varying (unequal) in size. The strata are month, area, and set type. Wells, the first cluster stage, are selected to be sampled only if all of the fish were caught in the same month, same area, and same set type. Fish, the second cluster stage, are sampled for lengths, and independently, for species composition of the catch. The EPO is divided into 13 sampling areas, which were defined in 1968, based on the catch distributions of yellowfin and skipjack tunas. This area stratification does not reflect the multi-species, multi-set-type fishery of today. In order to define more homogenous areas, I used agglomerative cluster analysis to look for groupings of the size data and the catch and effort data for 2000–2006. I plotted the results from both datasets against the IATTC Sampling Areas, and then created new areas. I also used the results of the cluster analysis to update the substitution scheme for strata with catch, but no sample. I then calculated the total annual catch (and variance) by species by stratifying the data into new Proposed Sampling Areas and compared the results to those reported by the IATTC. Results showed that re-stratifying the areas produced smaller variances of the catch estimates for some species in some years, but the results were not significant.

English: We describe an age-structured statistical catch-at-length analysis (A-SCALA) based on the MULTIFAN-CL model of Fournier et al. (1998). The analysis is applied independently to both the yellowfin and the bigeye tuna populations of the eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO). We model the populations from 1975 to 1999, based on quarterly time steps. Only a single stock for each species is assumed for each analysis, but multiple fisheries that are spatially separate are modeled to allow for spatial differences in catchability and selectivity. The analysis allows for error in the effort-fishing mortality relationship, temporal trends in catchability, temporal variation in recruitment, relationships between the environment and recruitment and between the environment and catchability, and differences in selectivity and catchability among fisheries. The model is fit to total catch data and proportional catch-at-length data conditioned on effort. The A-SCALA method is a statistical approach, and therefore recognizes that the data collected from the fishery do not perfectly represent the population. Also, there is uncertainty in our knowledge about the dynamics of the system and uncertainty about how the observed data relate to the real population. The use of likelihood functions allow us to model the uncertainty in the data collected from the population, and the inclusion of estimable process error allows us to model the uncertainties in the dynamics of the system. The statistical approach allows for the calculation of confidence intervals and the testing of hypotheses. We use a Bayesian version of the maximum likelihood framework that includes distributional constraints on temporal variation in recruitment, the effort-fishing mortality relationship, and catchability. Curvature penalties for selectivity parameters and penalties on extreme fishing mortality rates are also included in the objective function. The mode of the joint posterior distribution is used as an estimate of the model parameters. Confidence intervals are calculated using the normal approximation method. It should be noted that the estimation method includes constraints and priors and therefore the confidence intervals are different from traditionally calculated confidence intervals. Management reference points are calculated, and forward projections are carried out to provide advice for making management decisions for the yellowfin and bigeye populations.

English: Data obtained from tagging experiments initiated during 1953-1958 and 1969-1981 for skipjack tuna from the coastal eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO) are reanalyzed, using the Schnute generalized growth model. The objective is to provide information that can be used to generate a growth transition matrix for use in a length-structured population dynamics model. The analysis includes statistical approaches to include individual variability in growth as a function of length at release and time at liberty, measurement error, and transcription error. The tagging data are divided into northern and southern regions, and the results suggest that growth rates differ between the two regions. The Schnute model provides a significantly better fit to the data than the von Bertalanffy model, a sub-model of the Schnute model, for the northern region, but not for the southern region. Individual variation in growth is best described as a function of time at liberty and as a function of growth increment for the northern and southern regions, respectively. Measurement error is a significant part of the total variation, but the results suggest that there is no bias caused by the measurement error. Additional information, particularly for small and large fish, is needed to produce an adequate growth transition matrix that can be used in a length-structured population dynamics model for skipjack tuna in the EPO.
