The evolution of the fishery of the pink shrimp Penaeus duorarum Burkenroad is analysed from its beginning in 1969 until the end of 1970. A rapid and general decline of the yield has been evident during this period. The actual shrimp fleet seems to be too big to allow an exploitation economically convenient of the stock.

Surface temperature was measured by remote sensing through Cape Lopez (Gulf of Guinea) frontal region during the fishing season in June and July 1972 and 1974. Twelve typical situations are analysed through four main directions: surface situation, tendency, hydrobiological structure and availability to fisheries. The tuna behavior is analysed in relation with the frontal zone movements and a mechanism which tends to aggregate important shoals of tunas is presented.

The evolution of a plankton copepod population in the Mauritania upwelling was studied by following a drogue for 9 days, from the point of upwelling till the water-mass dives under offshore waters. The Shannon index of specific diversity and the tropic structure allow separation into several stages in the studied succession. The upwelling brings near the shore a rather poor, highly diverse fauna, with a low filter-feeder rate. The phytoplanktonic development induces an increase in the copepod number. The filter-feeders become dominant and the diversity decreases. When the increase of copepod number stops, the diversity decreases and the omnivore and carnivore rate increases.

Although selected aspects of the commercial fishery in the Virgin Islands have been documented since the early 1930's (Fiedler and Jarvis, 1932; Idyll and Randall, 1959; Hess, 1961; Swingle et al. 1970; Brownell, 1971; Brownell and Rainey, 1971; Sylvester and Dammann, 1972, and Olsen et al., 1978), fish corrals and their use have not been described. This account, based on personal observations made during 1985-86, summarizes commercial fishing methods in the Virgin Islands (U. S. and British), documents the use of fish corrals, and serves as an introduction to the methodologies of this harvesting technique. Interviews of commercial fishermen about how and when fish corrals are used provided information not available from direct observation. Local common names for gear type and fish species are shown in parentheses.

This is the fifth Annual report of the Cumberland River Authority on information of its activities and responsibilities on river management in its area between the beginning of April 1969, to the end of March 1970. The report contains 5 main sections on water resources, land drainage, fisheries, pollution, and finally the expenditure and income for the 12 month period. The first area that the report deals with is water resources, wich includes periodical surveys, hydrometric schemes, acceptable flows, conservation works and a review of rainfall and river flow. The section on land drainage looks at work on improvement schemes, floods, charges and information on maintenance work carried out on rivers including Wampool, Waver, Derwent, Ellen, Mite, Bleng, Eden, Caldew and Petteril. The fisheries section covers 5 districts of the River Eden, Esk, Ellen, Derwent and South West Cumberland. It includes angling information and a general report for salmon and sea trout, brown trout and freshwater fish. Fish disease and fish hatchery are also covered as well as fisheries protection and licence duties. The fourth section on pollution deals with water quality, and the results of samples taken from rivers Eden, Eamont, Petteril, Caldew, Calder, Bleng, Derwent, Ehen, Ellen, Wampool and Waver are also given. It also covers information on sewage and trade effluents. The River Authorities preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

This is the seventh Annual report of the Cumberland River Authority on information of its activities and responsibilities on river management in its area between the beginning of April 1971, to the end of March 1972. The report contains 5 main sections on water resources, land drainage, fisheries, pollution, and finally the expenditure and income for the 12 month period. The first area that the report deals with is water resources, which includes periodical surveys, hydrometric schemes, acceptable flows, conservation works and a review of rainfall and river flow. It includes angling information and a general report for salmon and sea trout, brown trout and freshwater fish. Fish disease and fish hatchery are also covered as well as fisheries protection and licence duties. The fourth section on pollution deals with water quality, and the results of samples taken for chemical analysis from rivers Eden, Eamont, Petteril, Caldew, Calder, Irthing, Esk, Irt, Mite, Derwent, Ehen, Wampool and Waver are also given. It also covers information on sewage and trade effluents. The River Authorities preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

This is the River Dart Scale Reading Investigation Report on the 1972 season by the Devon River Board. The object of this investigation is to examine, by means of scale-reading, the general biology of the salmon population of the River Dart. In 1967 the final report on a five-year scale reading programme was summarised, at the time it was considered sufficient information to help with restocking programmes and the management of salmon population. But a further scale reading programme was started in an attempt to monitor changing patterns in salmon runs that may be caused by the new influences. It reviews the methods used for collection of the scales and examination of the materials. It shows the results of the survey and the number of scales studied from each of the various sea-age classes, time of running with distribution of the sea-age groups throughout the season, fish sizes and smolt ages at migration. All is summarized in tables, and figures are included showing weight distributions for each age classes and frequency distributions.

This is the Second River Teign Fisheries Survey from July and August 1972 by the Devon River Authority. The aim of the survey was to assess the distribution and relative abundance of salmonid fish in the River Teign, describing the methods and results. The section on methods contains information of the selected transects and methodology for the survey. The results goes through totals of all salmonid fish caught, adults, parrs and estimations of parr population individually for salmo salar and salmo trutta. Maps with survey sections and fish indices along with tables with size distributions and totals of salmonids found are attached.

The object of this investigation is to examine, by means of scale reading, the biology of age classes of the salmon population of the River Exe. It reviews the methods used for the collection of scales and examination of the materials. It shows the results of the survey and the number of scales studied from each of the various sea-age classes, time of running with distribution of the sea-age groups throughout the season, fish sizes and smolt ages at migration. All is summarized in tables, and figures are included showing weight distributions for each age classes and frequency distributions.

This is the Salmon Scale Reading Investigation from 1972 by Cornwall River Authority. The object of this investigation is to examine, by means of scale reading, the biology of age classes of the salmon populations of the River Tamar, River Tavy, River Lynher, River Fowey, River Camel and River Plym. It contains for each river the numbers of caught salmon, number of scales received and which were unreadable and percentages in each age group separately for net and rod caught. Length and weight frequency distribution histograms have been plotted to show the size distribution of the various sea age group.

This is the Rivers Taw and Torridge scale reading investigation: the 8th annual report for the 1972 season produced by Devon River Authority in 1973. The object of the investigation is to examine by means of scale reading the biology of age classes of the salmon populations of the Rivers Taw and Torridge. The report is arranged in sections as previously and tables referred to in the report form an appendix. Scales were collected only from fish taken during the normal open season, which in 1972 was 1st April - 31st August. A weekly close time was in operation for the nets, a period of 60 hours from 6 p.m. on Friday evening to 6 a.m. on the following Monday. Thirty six licences for draft or seine nets were issued for the 1972 season and netsmen submitted samples of scales collected direct.
