Report of the postgraduate certificate course on integrated coastal management, Bangkok, Thailand, 21 January - 1 March, 2013

Student projects included: conservation and protection of critical coral habitats in Phuket; assessing the carrying capacity on conservation and protection strategies; proactive stakeholder strategy to tackle an environmental threat; improving the environmental management through participation and sustainable freshwater management. All of these projects were conducted on Racha Yai Island in Phuket.

Report of the Marine Protected Areas Working Group meeting, Penang, Malaysia, 11-12 February, 2014

The objectives of the workshop were to review and update Marine Protected Area (MPA) data, finalise policy briefs for each country and recommend future actions and policies for sustainable management of MPAs.

Report of the BOBLME ecosystem characterisation workshop, Phuket, Thailand, 10-12 February, 2014

The goals of the workshop were to: present verified data, draft a report containing visual descriptors and information on the structure and function of BOBLME ecosystems; identify information gaps and transboundary issues and develop capacity of national scientists on data integration techniques.

Report of the procedures and methods for continuing assessment of the status of the Hilsa resources

The Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) sampled length frequency data, reviewed historical catch and effort data and sampled water quality to asses the status of hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) resources. BFRI conducted a training course for BOBLME members. They also prepared awareness building materials for use in workshops for hilsa fishers.

New species of Berea (Copepoda, Chondracanthidae) parasitic on a flounder from Kuwait

Berea clava, new species, is described based on the specimens recovered from the gill filaments of a flounder, Pseudorhombus arsius (H.-B.), collected in Kuwait Bay of Arabian (Persian) Gulf. This is the second species of Berea.

Report of the second regional ecosystem characterisation workshop, Bangkok, Thailand, 3-5 November 2014

The workshop's aim was to consolidate and validate the information collected by the CSIRO project during the first regional ecosystem characterisation workshop held in February. This information includes; descriptions of broad scale biophysical drivers of ecological systems in the region; and descriptive narratives and illustrations of each ecosystem sub-region in the Bay of Bengal.

Report of the training workshop on the application of Ecopath with Ecosim to BOBLME, Phuket, Thailand, 8-12 September, 2014

The workshop's objective was to provide information to improve a regional Ecopath with Ecoism (EwE) model.The workshop described the basis and principles underlying the software, encompassing the basics of Ecopath to Ecospace, economics and management strategy evaluation.

Report of the hilsa fisheries assessment working group meeting, Kolkata, India, 26-28 November, 2014

The items discussed at the meeting included; capacity development assessment techniques, development of a hilsa fishery management plan; development of a standardised model framework for stock assessment; development of a Strategic Action Plan (SAP) for ecosystem health and resource evaluation; priority fishery management recommendations; and stock status advice for hilsa in BOBLME region .

Report of the sub-regional workshop to validate the scoping study of nutrient pollution on the coastal and marine systems of South Asia, Colombo, Sri Lanka, 21-22 May, 2014

The workshop agenda included: presentations from collaborative institutions, national governments and resource persons; a draft scoping study on nutrient loading; and an ecosystem approach to pollution management was tested.

The report presents; terms of reference; work progress; surveys of shark fishers and traders; shark biodiversity survey; and a National Plan of Action (NPOA) for conservation and management of shark resources in Bangladesh.

Report of the workshop on ecosystem characterisation of Indian coastal waters, Dona Paula, Goa, India, 20-22 October, 2014

The goals of the workshop were to: conduct an interactive workshop for characterizing Indian coastal ecosystems; verification of the ecosystem characterisation report for the East coast of India; and development of ecosystem characterisation for the west coast of India based on ecological/biophysical systems.

Report of the essential EAFM training course, Chittagong, Bangladesh, 12-20 November, 2014

Participants were exposed to concepts and information about Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) using a structured, participatory method of delivery. The learning strategy involved specifically designed exercises, using real examples, to consolidate learning. Daily monitoring and reviews were conducted together with pre-and post-course assessment.

Report of the BOBLME ecosystem valuation workshop, Phuket, Thailand, 2-3 December, 2014

The objective of the workshop was the first assessment of marine coastal ecosystems in the BOBLME environment. The workshop: endorsed the report assessing, demonstrating and capturing the economic value of marine & coastal ecosystem services; acknowledged further data was was needed for ecosystem valuation analysis; recommended information from this report be added to the BOBLME Strategic Action Programme; identified economic instruments that might be used in conservation and sustainable management, and proposed future work.

Enhancing capacity of fishing communities for resource management

International Collective in Support of Fishworkers (ICSF) undertook capacity development in six locations in five countries (India, Indonesia, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Thailand). Six workshops were undertaken to help communities develop proposals for the conservation and sustainable uses of fisheries resources.
