Hardness of water had significant effect on the acute toxicity of cadmium to common carp, Cyprinus carpio. The 96h LC sub(50) and safe application rate increased from 43.17 and 22.77 mg 1 super(-1) in soft water (0.9 mM Ca super(2+) l super(-1)) to 310.48 and 177.66 mg l super(-1), respectively, in very hard water (6.0 mM Ca super(2+) l super(-1)). In medium hard and hard water, 96h LC sub(50) values were 48.39 and 116.45 mg l super(-1). When sediments were included in the medium hard, hard and very hard water treatments, the 96h LC sub(50) were 111.20, 133.71 and 334.47 mg l super(-1), respectively. Among these values, the one for medium hard water with sediment treatment was significantly higher than medium hard water treatment; values for the other two treatments were non-significant when compared with respective water treatments. Sediment was able to reduce the acute toxicity of cadmium mainly due to the complexation of cadmium with dissolved organic carbon (DOC). At the lower hardness level, cadmium complexed with DOC and the acute toxicity was reduced significantly. At higher hardness, most of the DOC sites were occupied by calcium and the acute toxicity of cadmium was not significantly reduced in hard water with sediment and very hard water with sediment experiments in comparison to respective water treatments.

Effects of three different doses of vitamin D sub(3) on molting, growth, and calcium and phosphate composition of tissue and molt during the grow-out of the giant freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii (average weight 10.56 ± 0.20 g), obtained from a grow-out pond, were studied. Intramuscular doses of vitamin D sub(3) (100, 500 and 2000 IU/kg body weight) were given on the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 20th, 25th and 30th days. All the experimental animals were fed with a basal diet containing fish meal, shrimp meal, wheat flour, groundnut de-oiled cake, soybean meal and wheat bran at 3% of the body weight. The numbers of molts were recorded as 20±0.50, 29±1.16, 51±1.87, and 30±1.60 in control, 100, 500 and 2000 IU/kg body weight physiological doses, respectively. Maximum growth was recorded in prawns given 500 IU/ kg dose. Survival was between 58.33 ± 9.13 and 77.77 ± 8.61%. The ash content and calcium level increased significantly (p<0.05) and recorded the highest values in 500 IU/kg physiological dose. However, the inorganic phosphate (P sub(i)) content recorded the highest values in tissue in 2000 IU/kg dose (p<0.05, F = 50.60613). There is no significant difference in calcium contents (p>0.05) in both tissue and molt at 500 and 2000 IU/kg doses. It was found that a higher physiological dose (2000 IU/kg) of vitamin D sub(3) increased the rate of mortality. Results have shown that vitamin D sub(3) has a positive impact on the growth and survival of M. rosenbergii and it interferes with the metabolism of Ca and P sub(i), in tissue, and alters molting frequency. Results on physiological dose suggest an alternative and effective dietary supplementation method of vitamin D sub(3) in the grow-out phase of M. rosenbergii.

The intensive collecting of Prof. Dr. F. Starmühlner and Prof. Dr. H. H. Costa in Ceylon in 1970 produced among others some Dysticidae. The material turned out to be especially interesting as it comes all together from running waters, in which otherwise collecting is infrequent. From Sri Lanka quite a lot of species of Dytiscidae are already known.

An experiment was conducted to assess the performance of mola (Amblyphmyngodon mola) in rice fish culture system with freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii), Thai silver barb (Bm·bades ganianotus) and common carp (Cyprinus cmpia) for a period of 4 months at the Agronomy Field Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh, Bangladesh. Four treatments viz., treatment-I (T1) with A. mala and M. rosenbergii; treatmen t-II (T2) with A. mala, M. rosenbergii and B. gonianatus ; treatmentIII (T3) with A. mala, 1Vf. rosenbergii and C. cmpia, and treatment- IV (T4) as control (without fish) were used in triplicate. All treatments were equally fertilized with urea (200 kg/ha), TSP (150 kg/ha) and MP (75 kg/ha). The mean values of water quality parameters viz., temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, nitrate-nitrogen showed a very small variations among different treatments, but phosphate-phosphorus and chlorophyll-a were relatively higher in T4 without fish (i.e., control). The fish production of 480.5 kg/ha in T3 was significantly higher than that of 355.6 kg/ha T2 and 223.8 kg/ha in T 1• The values of soil organic matter, total-nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium at harvest were significantly (P<0.05) higher in the treatments with fish than without fish, but pH did not show any significant differences. The yield of rice grain and straw was also obtained significantly (P<0.05) higher in the treatments with fish. The increase in grain was higher over the control by 11.81%, 9.41% and 14.76% and that in straw was by 9.83%, 4.77% and 13.29% in Tl> T2, and T3 respectively.

An experiment was conducted to understand the culture feasibility of sliver barb (Barbodes gonionotus) and GIFT (Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia) with shrimp (Penaeus monodon). There were three different treatment (T) combinations: (T1) shrimp (10,000/ha) and silver barb (10,000/ha), (T2) shrimp (10,000/ha) and GIFT (10,000/ha), and (T3) shrimp (10,000/ha). Shrimp, after 120 days of culture, attained an average weight of 23.77g in T1, followed by T3 (23.70g). The highest average weight was recorded in T2 (24.93g). The specific growth rate (SGR) of shrimp was 6.9%, 6.94% and 6.9% for T1 T2 and T3, respectively. The SGR for the B. gonionotus and GIFT was 2.56% and 4.26%, respectively. The final weight of silver barb was 69.75g and that of GIFT was 161.83g. Survival of shrimp was higher (65.50%) in T2, followed by T3 (59.97%) and T1 (57.03%). Survival rate of silver barb (58.10%) was lower compared to that of GIFT (78.43%). Sporadic and scanty mortality of silver barb with a symptom of blind-red-protruded eye, swollen belly and body lesion was observed. Production of shrimp was higher of 284.05 kg/ha in monoculture, followed 162.47 kg/ha in concurrent culture with silver barb and 136.77 kg/ha culture with GIFT. In spite of similar stocking density of B. gonionotus and GIFT in T1 and T2, respectively, the production of GIFT was higher (1272.95 kg/ha) than that of silver barb ( 402.72kg/ha). Survival, final weight and production rates of shrimp among the treatments were found insignificant while total production of shrimp/fish was found to vary significantly (P

Comparative studies with a new 17 m parallel twin-body trawl and a 17 m bulged belly trawl conducted off Cochin during 1974-77 are reported. The parallel twin body trawl showed an increase of 28% in catch over that of bulged belly with a break up of 39.9% and 23.1 % for prawns and fishes respectively. The increase in catch is attributed to the extra wide mouth opening (26.6 %) of the parallel twin-body trawl. Parallel twin-body trawl had 8.96% lesser resistance which resulted in lower utilization of horse power.

The study aimed to investigate the productivity and profitability of rice-fish farming. It also determined the factors affecting rice-fish and fingerling production in Bangladesh. Among the total respondents about 55% were involved in rice-fish farming, 37% in pond fish culture and rest 9% in fish nursery. Integrated rice-fish farming contributed about 83% of the annual farm income in Comilla while it was about 20% in both Kishoregonj and Chandpur districts. Among the different farming systems integrated rice-fish culture and rearing fingerlings in the nursery pond were more profitable at the farm level. Farmers earned a net return of Tk. 49,714/ha from integrated fish culture with boro rice while the net return of boro rice-alone was only Tk. 11,179/ha. This indicated that farmer could earn 218% higher net return from integrated rice-fish farming than that of boro rice only farming. Moreover, integrated rice-fish culture also reduced pesticides cost to about 77% and weeding cost to about 51% in boro season. Fingerling nursing earned highest net returns among the three technologies.

Purpose of the study was to ascertain the extent of adoption of aquaculture technologies by the farmers as well as constraints faced by them in adopting the aquaculture technologies. The study also explored its relationships with the selected characteristics of the farmers. In addition, an attempt was also made to determine some selected attributes of the technologies and their relationships with the adoption by the farmers. The study was conducted with the farmers of 10 upazilas of greater Mymensingh district who were the beneficiaries of three NGOs viz. SARA, ORD, and GRAMAUS. There were 351,241 and 249 beneficiaries under SARA, ORD and GRAMAUS, respectively who adopted the aquaculture technologies under DSAP. About 25% farmers from each of the three NGOs were selected for the study. The total sample size was 212. Pre-designed and pre-tested interview schedules were used for collecting data from the farmers. Field data were collected from the farmers during August-September, 2004. Pearson product moment correlation co-efficient were computed in order to explore the relationships of the selected characteristics of the farmers as well as selected attributes of technology with the adoption of aquaculture technologies by the farmers. The same statistical test was used to determine the relationships between the selected characteristics of the farmers and their constraints in adopting the aquaculture technologies.

Data obtained from investigations which had been carried out during 1998-1999 in the waters of South Vietnam indicate that concentrations of Fe and Zn were usually higher than permissible limits. In the East South Vietnam waters, Fe concentration varied from 77 to 4450g/l (mean 1045g/l) and Zn concentration varied from 7.24 to 74.1g/l (mean 26.7g/l), Pollution coefficients of the two metals were 10.4 and 2.7 respectively. In the Gulf of Thailand, variation range of Fe was 133-850g/l (mean 318g/l) and of Zn was 4.8-167.8g/l (mean 23.46g/l); corresponding pollution coefficients were 3.2 and 2.3. Mn, Cu, As had mean concentrations lower than permissible limits. In the East South Vietnam waters, variation range for Mn was 9.0-444.6g/l (mean 57.0g/l), for Cu was 1.0- 20.3g/l (mean 3.1g/l) and for As was 1.0-10.5 g/l (mean 3.7 g/l). In the Gulf of Thailand, Mn concentration varied from 1.2 to 410.5g/l (mean 19.1g/l), Cu concentration varied from 1.2 to 14.7g/l (mean 3.7g/l), variation range of As concentration was 1.0-13.3g/l with the mean value was 3.6g/l. Scarce data relating to Hg, Cd, Pb showed that their concentrations in the East South Vietnam waters were negligible (usually < 1.0g/l).

Cost-benefit analysis of a 9.82 m and 11 m fishing trawlers based on the number of fishing trips is presented. The number of fishing trips per year determines the profit and loss of the trawler. With the increase in the number of fishing trips, the profit also increase for both the sizes of trawlers. The minimum quantity of prawn and fish to be landed for 0-20% profit for varying number of fishing trips are worked out. The break-even for 9.82 and 11m trawlers was observed to be 185 and 210 fishing trips respectively during 1980-81.

Extimated catch of 6,484.9; 3,505.6 and 4,797.7 t of fishes were landed at Nawabunder in 'dol.' net during 1976-77, 1977-78 and 1978-1979 respectively. There has been an increasing trend in effort and decline in catch and catch rate. The catch rate came down from 174.8 kg in 1976-77 to 84 kg in 1978-79. The detailed studies on the catch composition revealed that the Bombay duck formed about 68.6-77% of the total catch. The other important constituents being Coilia dussumieri 1.5-9.2%, ribbon fish 3.0-6.5%, non-penaeid prawn, namely, Acetus indicus, Nematopalaemon tenuipes and Hippolysmata ensirostris together formed about 6.1-13.7% and penaied prawns 1.5-3.1% of the total dol net landings. In addition, quality fishes such as ghol, warn, pomfret and catfishes were also landed in considerable quantities. The landings of ghol are on the increase from 4.9 t in 1976-77 to 59 t in 1978-79. Large number of juveniles of economically important fishes namely, Harpodon nehereus, Pampus argenteus, Trichiurus lepturus and Ilisha filigera have been observed in the catch particularly during February-May. The destructive nature of the gear has been commented along with the suggestions for regulation of the fishery.
