Report of the Marine Protected Areas Working Group, Bangkok, Thailand, 1-2 February, 2012

The purpose of the meeting was to: discuss and reach consensus on the implications of the FAO Marine Protected Area(MPA) guidelines; provide further input for BOBLME brochure and policies; agree on actions on the BOBLME MPA review; produce concept proposals for MPA pilot sites and to formalise the establishment of the BOBLME MPA working group.

Report of the regional workshop in transboundary aquatic animal health issues, Bangkok, Thailand, 12-13 January, 2012

This workshop was implemented as part of the Transboundary Diagnostic Analysis (TDA). The main focus was on the shrimp and fish aquaculture sectors and addressed issues such as aquatic animal health and transfers of aquatic animals and plants.

Report of the Regional Policy Review Workshop, Penang, Malaysia, 2-4 October, 2012

The objectives of the workshop were to validate the contents and findings of the regional synthesis of policy instruments,processes and implementation, which the BOBLME project had produced in 2011; to identify areas of policy needs and gaps and constraints in policy implementation; and to develop a work plan and recommendations for future action work on harmonising policies and strengthening policy making capacity in the Bay of Bengal region.

Report of the BOBLME Regional Fisheries Management Advisory Committee, Bangkok, Thailand, 25-26 June, 2012

The BOBLME Project supports member countries to produce fishery management plans for hilsa and Indian Mackerel using an ecosystem approach to fisheries management (EAFM). The EAFM has three tiers: technical studies to provide information; a Regional Fisheries Management Committee (RFMAC) to interpret the information and deliver ecosystem based fisheries management advice; and a Regional Fisheries Management Forum to deliberate on the advice as it relates to national actions.

A training course on seagrass conservation and monitoring was conducted at Mawlamyine University and Ngapali Beach government department and Non-Government Organizations (NGO) trainees.

Report of the national stakeholder consultation workshop on Sri Lanka NPOA for the conservation and management of sharks, 03 December, 2013, Colombo, Sri Lanka

The objectives of the workshop were to; ensure shark catches were sustainable; assess threats to shark populations; identify vulnerable shark stocks; protect biodiversity; improve consultation involving stakeholders; minimize waste a discards and facilitate monitoring and landings data.

Report of the multi-stakeholder consultation workshop for developing a draft plan for the implementation of "Ecosystem Health Card approach for Chilika Lake", 13 September, [2013], Odisha, India

The Chilika Health report Card is based on three categories: water quality, fisheries and biodiversity.

Report of the pilot EAFM course, 23-28 June, 2013, Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

Participants were exposed to concepts and information about EAFM using a structured, participatory method of delivery. The learning strategy involved pre- and post-course assessment as well as 4-6 month follow up at outcome level to assess improves EAFM practices. The report outlines methodology details of content and the daily feedback process.

Report of the postgraduate certificate course on integrated coastal management, Bangkok, Thailand, 21 January - 1 March, 2013

Student projects included: conservation and protection of critical coral habitats in Phuket; assessing the carrying capacity on conservation and protection strategies; proactive stakeholder strategy to tackle an environmental threat; improving the environmental management through participation and sustainable freshwater management. All of these projects were conducted on Racha Yai Island in Phuket.

Report of the Marine Protected Areas Working Group meeting, Penang, Malaysia, 11-12 February, 2014

The objectives of the workshop were to review and update Marine Protected Area (MPA) data, finalise policy briefs for each country and recommend future actions and policies for sustainable management of MPAs.

Report of the BOBLME ecosystem characterisation workshop, Phuket, Thailand, 10-12 February, 2014

The goals of the workshop were to: present verified data, draft a report containing visual descriptors and information on the structure and function of BOBLME ecosystems; identify information gaps and transboundary issues and develop capacity of national scientists on data integration techniques.

Report of the procedures and methods for continuing assessment of the status of the Hilsa resources

The Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute (BFRI) sampled length frequency data, reviewed historical catch and effort data and sampled water quality to asses the status of hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) resources. BFRI conducted a training course for BOBLME members. They also prepared awareness building materials for use in workshops for hilsa fishers.
