The Ribble estuary (North West England) is sampled for water quality twelve times a year. The suite of parameters used for baseline monitoring is only analysed four times a year on the designated sampling sites. The sampling locations are shown in Figure 1, and their descriptions are found in Appendix 1. The baseline monitoring stations have been chosen to respond to regional, national and European requirements. The suite of parameters to be analysed in the laboratory is listed in Tables 1 and 2. Appendix 2 lists the environmental quality objectives (EQOs) and standards (EQSs) for estuaries and coastal waters. These values will help in interpreting the collected data from the Ribble surveys.

This is the first River Dart Fisheries Survey produced by the Devon River Authority; which was carried out from May to October 1965. The objective was to examine the distribution and relative abundance of salmonid fish in the River Dart, in order to assess the possibility or desirability, of increasing salmon smolt production of the river by artificial propagation or other means. Description, chemical, pollution and biological conditions of the River Dart along with fisheries catches, water extraction and spawning are briefly cited. The method includes the choice of sections and sampling techniques. The results go through the number/type/class of fishes counted while the survey took place, distribution patterns within the different transects/brooks, competition between salmon parr and trout and estimations of population. The section on the discussion and recommendations is introduced by a brief explanation of the bases for the Artificial Propagation Programme and the River Dart specific case-study. The annexes contains River Dart and tributaries maps, fish size distribution tables and figures, tables with totals of salmonid fish found and population density tables.

This is the River Dart Fisheries Survey 1974 report produced by the South West Water Authority. The survey was carried out between July and October 1974 to assess the extent of the 0+ and 1+ Salmo salar L. population in the Dart catchment and thereby assess directly the success of the 1973/74 and 1972/73 spawning season. The survey showed that there were large numbers of salmon parr distributed throughout the upper reaches of the Dart, reflecting the successful spawning of the 1973/74 and 1972/73 season. It contains tables with survey sections locations, presence/absence for each section and location maps with spawning grounds and sampling stations.

This is the River Dart, Weir and Fish Pass Survey 1992 report produced by the National Rivers Authority. It goes through the general condition of Weirs and fish passes to determine the extent of problems associated with the upstream and downstream migration of salmonids. It considers solutions where problems exist and investigates the exact use of the resource. It looks at the following Weirs: Totnes, Staverton, Hood, Kilbury, Buckfast, Holne, Mardle (River Mardle), Holybrook (Holybrook), Jordan (West Webburn), Swincombe Intake (River Swincombe), Blackbrook, West Dart, Cowsic (Devonport Leat), Kingfisher Press (Bidwell Brook) and Bagpark (East Webburn). It also contains location maps of the weirs and individual fact sheets along detailed pictures and diagrams.

This is the River Dart Salmon Project Summary of Phase II Report (2002) by the Westcountry Rivers Trust. The report contains sections on the project introduction, methods, habitat utilisation (predicted densities) and distribution at Walla Brook, Swincombe and Strane, bio-monitoring of water chemistry and suggested action at local, catchment and research scale. The attached maps show spawing, fry and juveniles habitats in the lower or upper Walla Brook.

This is the River Teign Fisheries Survey from 1963 by the Devon River Authority. The principal object of the survey is to examine the distribution and relative abundance of salmonid fish in the river system in order to assess the possibility of increasing the salmon population by artificial propagation. A secondary object is to examine the condition of the river downstream of the Rookery Brook confluence, which was affected by the pollution and fish mortality in 1962 to assess the advisability of restocking the length with brown trout. The report contains a brief introduction of the general aspects of the catchment, chemistry, pollution, biology and fisheries in the river, methodology that looks at the selected transects and techniques for sampling and results. In the appendix, it is explained why the Board have decided to proceed with the artificial propagation and the required procedure. Maps with survey sections and fish indices along with tables with size distributions and totals of salmonids found are attached.

This is the River Exe Fisheries Survey 1966-1967 by the Devon River Authority. This is the fifth Fisheries Survey to be carried out in the initial series, other surveys having been carried out on the Rivers Teign, Torridge, Dart and Erme. The object of the survey was to examine the distribution and relative abundance of salmonid fish in the river system, in order to assess the possibility, or desirability, of increasing salmon smolt production of the river by artificial propagation or other means. The survey was carried out from middle May to end of July in 1966 when further survey work was prevented by high water levels, and from the end of June to the end of September in 1967. This is the River Goyt & Etherow Crayfish Survey report from the Environment Agency held between August and November 2000. The report focuses on the need to verify the presence of the non-native American signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) in the main River Goyt, and determine its distribution. Signal crayfish have been reported in the River Goyt after spreading from a known population centre in Hollywood End Brook, to the east of Marple Bridge. The report contains sections on results, discussion and a summary. The section on results shows maps of presence or absence of different crayfish species in River Goyt, and the Mersey/ Weaver river systems such American signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) and European freshwater crayfish (Austopotamobius pallipes).

This is the assessment and exploitation of eel (Anguilla anguilla. L) stocks in the River Thames and its catchment performed by the Polytechnic of Central London and The Thames Water Authority Research Project between April 1985 and April 1986. The report makes an examination of the pre-pollution history of the Thames eel fishing industry to permit an assessment of the recovery of the eel stock following the cleaning up of the Tideway. Archive material shows that the 19th Century stock was larger and more widely distributed than it is today, and the natural recruitment of elvers to the system is now much smaller. Sampling of commercial catches and trapping studies, including comparisons of different mesh sizes, have been undertaken in order to develop a statistical model of the Inner Estuary eel stock and its fishery. Local migrations and activity throughout the year are studied. Electro—fishing methods and eel traps are compared using mark-recapture techniques in order to develop an accurate means of assessing relative abundance and distribution. Work so far has concentrated mainly on the Rivers Darent and Roding but a preliminary distribution map for the whole catchment has been prepared. An experimental trapping site was established on the River Darent to investigate natural recruitment and up—river migration of elvers and juvenile eels. 1790 small eels were taken in 1985 providing information on the scale, timings and factors affecting the migration.

This is the report on the Leven estuary project: Fisheries Department final report produced by the Environment Agency North West in 1997. This report contains information about Leven estuary, river Leven catchment, river Crake catchment and the Ulverston Discharges. The Leven estuary is characterised by being very shallow, and shares the extremely variable tides and currents that characterize the whole of Morecambe Bay. There was little detailed knowledge of the impact on the Leven estuary, and particularly its fisheries, of the discharges from Ulverston. There has been some concern expressed by the lave netsmen and the general public about the possible harmful effects of the effluents on the biology of the estuary. In the absence of a definite strategy for the protection and management of the estuary was born this project. The project involves water quality monitoring, effluent and estuary toxicity testing, tracking of effluent plumes, and salmonid tagging and tracking. The entire project commenced in June 1995 and was expected to reach a conclusion in March 1997. The information gained from the project was expected to contribute to the creation of a 'mixing zone' for the effluent, and to improve the environmental management of the estuary and protection of its fishery.

Historic film on the River Lune, North England, UK. It shows the River Lune near its estuary at Lancaster. The film was made in the summer of 1972 over several weeks and is 14:25 minutes long. It combines aerial shots of the River, scientific and hydraulic work by the University of Salford which worked on a new weir of the Lune (Skerton Weir). Audio commentary explains the work. The film was produced by Cinephoto House, Manchester, on behalf of the predecessor orgenaisation of the Environment Agency, UK. The intended audience of the film is unknown.

This is the River Tamar Salmon Action Plan Consultation document produced by the Environment Agency in 1998. The report pays attention on the external consultation of the River Tamar Salmon Action Plan (SAP). This strategy represents an entirely new approach to salmon management within the UK and introduces the concept of river-specific salmon spawning targets as a salmon management tool. The River Tamar was one of the premier salmon rivers in the West Country, supporting fifteen licensed estuary nets, and the second highest rod catch behind the River Exe. The River Tamar SAP contains a description of the river catchment and highlights particular features that are relevant to the salmon population and the associated fishery.

Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve (hereafter, SARI or the park) was created in 1992 to preserve, protect, and interpret nationally significant natural, historical, and cultural resources (United States Congress 1992). The diverse ecosystem within it includes a large mangrove forest, a submarine canyon, coral reefs, seagrass beds, coastal forests, and many other natural and developed landscape elements. These ecosystem components are, in turn, utilized by a great diversity of flora and fauna. A comprehensive spatial inventory of these ecosystems is required for successful management. To meet this need, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Biogeography Program, in consultation with the National Park Service (NPS) and the Government of the Virgin Islands Department of Planning and Natural Resources (VIDPNR), conducted an ecological characterization. The characterization consists of three complementary components: a text report, digital habitat maps, and a collection of historical aerial photographs. This ecological characterization provides managers with a suite of tools that, when coupled with the excellent pre-existing body of work on SARI resources, enables improved research and monitoring activities within the park (see Appendix F for a list of data products).
