Report of the Workshop on Blue Crab Stock Dynamics in Chesapeake Bay, December 13-15, 1982, Chesapeake Biological Laboratory

This workshop was convened to begin building a foundation of understanding for developing and evaluating proposed measures for the rational management of the blue crab fishery in Chesapeake Bay. Our goal was to generate a summary of knowledge of blue crab stock dynamics. Specifically, we intended to address, and hoped to estimate, the basic parameters of an exploited stock - growth, mortality, natality, migration rates, sex ratios and abundance. In one sense these objectives were simply a means for organizing our discussions. A second objective was to compile at the workshop pertinent data held by the major research institutions on Chesapeake Bay so all participants could see the kinds and extent of existing data. As with many stock assessment problems, tailoring an estimating procedure around known existing data can be more productive than deciding on a procedure and then trying to find the required data in someone else's files. Genetic improvement of freshwater prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii (de Man) in India. Phase two: annual report for period January to December 2012

Macrobrachiurn rosenbergii is one of the widely cultured freshwater prawn species globally. India was the third largest producer of this species in 2007 and its aquaculture production rose to 43,000 metric tons (t) in 2005 froin less than 500 t in 1995. However, since then production has been declining and in 2008-09 it was 12,856 t, a reduction of more than 70% compared to 2005. There are several contributing factors to this decline, such as slow growth rate, poor survival, disease outbreaks, increase in cost of production, and availability of low risk alternative fish species. However, there is a consensus that poor seed quality leading to unsatisfactory growth and survival rates in ponds is one of the major reasons. Hence, the development of a systematic selective breeding program aimed at improving growth rate and ensuring high survival rate of this species was deemed a high priority. The Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA), Bhubaneswar, India in collaboration with the WorldFish Center, Malaysia initiated a selective breeding program for this species in 2007.

The present work is now concentrated mainly on the Tilapia fishery. As a result of past experience it is easier to direct efforts in a way likely to give useful results. Work on the Tilapia is now beyond the purely exploratory stage and these fishing experiments are being carried but in areas which are known to contain large numbers of Tilapia. Nets of different mesh size are being used in order to catch all stages of these fish. These nets are being fished at the surface and at the bottom, close to the shore and further out. The data collected should provide more precise information regarding the periodic migration, both vertical and horizontal, of these fish, a better understanding of their life history and breeding habits, and indicate' the potential possibilities of this fishery. These data should explain the variation in numbers of fish caught by Africans during different months of the year; they should also make it possible to determine more exactly the best type of net for use in this particular fishery.

Results of a random stratified bottom trawl survey for scad and mackerel stocks in Mozambican waters: small pelagic fish December-January 1985

The results obtained during the third phase of Nauka are reported concerning the standing stock estimates, population length structure and gonad development of scad and mackerel stocks and the catch composition in Mozambican waters.

Enhancing capacities of fishing communities: ICSF-BOBLME sub-regional dialogue on labour, migration and fisheries management. Report of the proceedings, 11 to 13 December 2013, Chulalongkorn University,Thailand

This report on the “Sub-regional Dialogue on Labour, Migration and Fisheries Management”, held at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, from 11 to 13 December 2013, highlights the issue of migrant labour on board fishing vessels and the problems migrant workers face in their workaday lives. This report will be useful for students, researchers, activists and anyone else interested in matters related to fisheries and small-scale fishing communities.

Report on the oceanographic investigations carried out at the Sofala Bank by the Soviet trawler "Sevastopolsky rybak" in September-December 1982

In September-December 1982 a fisheries research cruise was carried out at the Sofala Bank by the SRTM "Sevastopolsky Rybak". Oceanographic investigations have been conducted in association with the fisheries research. Three coverages were made of the Sofala Bank each lasting for slightly less than three weeks. This will allow for three descriptions of the oceanographic conditions in the area, with some reference being made to variability. This paper is just a preliminary report of those investigations.
