The juvenile salmonid populations of the River Lune catchment, 1981 to 1985

The aim of this study was to assess the status of the juvenile salmonid populations of the River Lune and its tributaries. There was special emphasis on juvenile salmon stocks in view of the implementation of a net limitation order in 1980. The number of licensed instruments were reduced as follows: (1) Drift, hang or whammel nets - from 12 to 10 (2) Draft or seine nets - from 3 to 1 (3) Heave or haaf nets - from 4 6 to 2 6 For the purpose of this report, the River Lune system has been divided into 13 subcatchments and these are examined with a view to detecting any trends in the data such as subcatchment productivity, partitioning between salmon and trout nursery streams, and whether the restrictions on salmon fishing had any discernible effects on juvenile salmon productivity. The effect of flow and instream obstructions on salmonid densities are also investigated as these have been shown to be important factors affecting abundance. Throughout the study period a programme of enhancement stocking took place primarily with salmon ova and fry. The possible impact of this on the results of the surveys has been assessed. The distribution and abundance of juvenile salmon was found to be relatively consistent in each of the 13 subcatchments studied over the 1981-1985 period.

This fisheries report summarises developments of the year 1985 in the region of the North West Water Authority. This is the report from the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 4th February, 1985. The report contains information on fishing licence duties (1986), Lead and Swans, fyke Nets, Grass Carp Field Trials in the Lancaster Canal and the total available residual chlorine (TARC) in the River Lune. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

This is the report from the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 20th May, 1985. The report contains sections on fishing licence duties in 1986, lead poisoning in swans, Authority investigations into acidity problems in rivers in Cumbria, fishing offences processed, Fish Counter statistics, and the fisheries liaison meeting report. The section on Authority investigations into acidity problems in rivers in Cumbria pays attention on investigations carried out by the University of Lancaster and Freshwater Biological Association about acidity problems, particularly in the Rivers Duddon and Esk since 1980. This section contains biological findings, a chemical sampling programme, results from continuous pH monitors, and catchment liming. The report contains sections on Public Water Supplies in West Cumbria, proposals for water supply for British Nuclear Fuels Limited (BNFL), and the proposals for a fish pass at Ennerdale Weir. The section on BNFL looks at the proposal of British Nuclear Fuels Limited to take more water from Wastwater. This section includes information about Wastwater, Calder Valley Boreholes, Mine Water and the River Ehen, and other groundwater investigations. The western Indian Ocean tuna fishery from 1980 to 1985: a summary of data collected by coastal states

Longliner and purse-seiner catch/effort statistics for tuna fisheries in the western Indian Ocean collected by Mozambique, Seychelles and Somalia are summarized. Although the data are not considered sufficient to indicate trends for the western Indian Ocean as a whole, an examination of data from the Seychelles EEZ shows that catch rates for yellowfin tuna declined consistently from 1982 to 1985, to about half their former levels. The data were processed by the FAO/Indo Pacific Tuna Development and Management Programme, Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Results of a random stratified bottom trawl survey for scad and mackerel stocks in Mozambican waters: small pelagic fish December-January 1985

The results obtained during the third phase of Nauka are reported concerning the standing stock estimates, population length structure and gonad development of scad and mackerel stocks and the catch composition in Mozambican waters.

Analysis of fish catch data from 1985 to 1994 in the Kenyan inshore marine waters

Fish landing data collected by the Kenyan Fisheries Department from the nearshort coastal marine waters from 1985 to 1994 were statistically analyzed to determine trends in the traditional fisher's catch. Over the ten year period a significant decline occurred for total catch and for catches of seven commercially important fish families: Lethrinidae, Siganidae. Lutjanidae, Scaridae, Carangidae, Scombridae and Mullidae. 1994 registercd the lowest catch over ten years. The total catch for all the fish declined from a mean annual catch of 6150 metric tonnes in the 1980's to a mean of 5141 metric tonnes in the 1990's with the catch for 1986 being 2 times higher than that of 1994. Although Mombasa district had the highest mean annual landing, its total landings like that of Lamu and Kwale districts decreased over the years. However, Kilifi district showed a steady increase in catches over the years. The changes in fish landings is thought to be caused by lack of appropriate fishing regulations, leading to overfishing of the lagoonal reefs beyond their maximum sustainable yields.
