Ninth Annual Report for the year ended 31st March, 1960

This is the ninth Annual report of the Cumberland River Board on information of its activities and responsibilities on river management in its area between the beginning of April 1959, to the end of March 1960. The report contains 5 main sections on water resources, land drainage, fisheries, pollution, and finally the expenditure and income for the 12 month period. The first area that the report deals with is water resources, which includes information on the completion of a gauging station on the River Eden, and an approval for a similar station on the River Derwent. It also gives information on rainfall and river flow. The section on land drainage looks at work on improvement schemes and information on maintenance work carried out on rivers including Wampool, Waver, Wiza, Ellen, Cocker, Irt, Esk, Annas, Marron, Eden, Eamont, Caldew and Petteril. The fisheries section covers 4 districts of the River Eden, Esk, Derwent and South West Cumberland. It includes angling information and a general report for salmon and sea trout, brown trout and freshwater fish. Fish disease and fish hatchery are also covered as well as re-stocking and fisheries protection. The fourth section on pollution deals with water quality and information on sewage and trade effluents. The River Boards preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

The fisheries section covers 5 districts of the River Eden, Esk, Derwent, Ellen and South West Cumberland. It includes angling information and a general report for salmon and sea trout, Brown trout and freshwater fish. Fish disease and fish hatchery are also covered as well as Byelaws and fisheries protection. The fourth section on pollution deals with water quality and information on sewage and trade effluents. The River Boards preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

River Dart Scale Reading Investigation Report on the 1962 Season

This is the first River Dart Scale Reading Investigation Report on the 1962 season by the Devon River Board. The object of this investigation is to examine, by means of scale-reading, the general biology of the salmon population of the River Dart. It reviews briefly the theory and mechanics of the scale-reading technique, the life history of the salmon, and the methods used for the collection of scales and the examination of the materials. It shows the results of the survey and the number of scales studied from each of the various sea-age classes, time of running with distribution of the sea-age groups throughout the season, fish sizes and smolt ages at migration. All are summarized in various tables and figures are also included, plotting weight distributions for each age classes and frequency distributions.

Fisheries Survey River Avon, 1962

This is the Fisheries Survey River Avon, 1962 by the Devon River Board. The object of the survey is to investigate the present distribution and relative abundance of salmonid fish in the river. It describes the methods of the investigation, the sampling and identification. It goes through the salmon, sea-trout and brown trout parrs, adult and coarse fish frequencies and distributions, all summarized in individual tables for each fish class. It also includes a variety of comments about the obtained results.

Reconstructed drought history, north-central Great Basin, 1600-1982 [abstract]

EXTRACT (SEE PDF FOR FULL ABSTRACT): Tree-ring chronologies, developed from cores from Pinyon pines growing on climatically sensitive sites in the north-central Great Basin, have been used to reconstruct precipitation and drought histories of the area from A.D. 1600 to 1982. Analysis of these hydrologic time series helps to place current climatic conditions into the perspective of the past 383 years (since 1600). ... The years 1934 and 1959 were the first and fourth driest while 1934 had the lowest July Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) of the reconstructed records. Nevertheless, the decade of the 1930's is only the seventh driest since 1600; the decade 1953-1962 ranks as the second driest. The driest non-overlapping decade since 1600 was 1856-1865. Interestingly, the second wettest decade was 1932-1941. An examination of 30-year mean precipitation data shows that the driest 30-year period was 1871-1900; 1931-1960 ranks as the fourth driest. The current 30-year period (1951-1980) ranks twelfth.

Spiny lobsters of Ceylon

Spiny lobsters of the family Palinuridae are known to exist in parts of Asia such as India, Japan, Indonesia and Malaya. In Ceylon spiny lobsters are caught chiefly by a primitive type of gear designed to catch these species and incidentally by nets set to catch fish. The limitations of these types of gear and the results of experimental fishing in Ceylon with different designs of lobster traps have been discussed earlier. As a result of these experiments a very effective trap for capturing spiny lobsters was developed and it was shown that spiny lobsters were present in large quantities (De Bruin 1960). This created great interest among skin-divers who found lobster fishing very remunerative.

On the troll line investigations off Cochin during five fishing seasons. Pt. 1. Investigations during 1960-61 and 1961-62 seasons

There is apparently great scope for improvement of the design and operational aspects of the gear particularly for the effective exploitation of seasonal fisheries like that of seer, tuna, barracuda etc. In order to evolve improved, yet cheap trolling gear regular investigations were undertaken by the Craft & Gear Wing of the Central Institute of Fisheries Technology, off Cochin for five fishing seasons and the results of these studies are incorporated in this paper.

Wadge Bank trawl fishery studies. Pt. 2. The effect of trawling on the catch per hour from 1945 to 1960

The object of this series of papers has been given in Part 1 (see Additional informations for details) which deals with the first known commercial fishery on the Wadge Bank from 1928 to 1935. There is no recorded trawling on the Bank between 1936 and 1944. This paper deals with the changes in the total catch (i.e. all species combined) per hour of trawling in relation to the changes in fishing intensity from 1945, when the present trawling activities started, to 1960. The effect of trawling on individual categories or varieties will be presented later.
