Six species of spiny lobsters of the genus Panulirus have been recorded in Ceylon waters. It is clear, therefore, that species dominance and ecological separation in the genus Panulirus is demonstrable and that the separation is dependent on the particular ecological preferences of the different species. In order to determine the factors governing the ecological separation, it was decided to make a detailed study of the environments in which the different species were found. Diving operations constituted the chief method of investigation. However, information was also obtained from commercial skin-divers, trap fishermen, bottom-set net fishermen and trawling operations. The period of investigations extended from 1962-1968.

Investigations into the resources of spiny lobsters in Ceylon waters were first begun in 1958 and consisted initially of skin-diving surveys of sand-stone and rocky areas at night. The surveys revealed the presence of lobsters in appreciable quantities in these reefs. Experiments were then carried out to decide on the most effective method of capturing them. Lobster traps of different design were placed in the reefs and rocky areas and the most efficient design was selected for use. This design was used thereafter to assess the spiny lobster resources. However, traps proved ineffective on the east coast as the particular species present there did not enter traps. Where traps failed the resources were assessed using skin-divers. These operations revealed the presence of lobsters in large concentrations in particular areas around Ceylon, especially on the south-west, south and west coasts. (De Bruin, 1960 and 1962). The Crown-of-Thorns starfish Acanthaster planci is a predator of coral and has been responsible for the widespread destruction of coral reefs. In Sri Lanka this starfish was first reported by Clarke in 1915. Recently skin-divers reported that Acanthaster planci was present in very large numbers in the coastal waters off Trincomalee, especially on the coral formations around Pigeon Island. It is well known that the multiplication of the starfish to plague proportions is a serious threat to the coral reef formations round the Island. If it were allowed to continue its depredations the entire coral reef belt round the Island might be destroyed in a short time. The monsoon waves would then convert the dead coral to rubble. In the absence of a barrier against the advancing waves during the monsoon it would also lead to serious erosion of the shoreline. The coral reef fish would also disappear with the destruction of the coral formations. On account of these considerations it was decided to conduct a survey of the Crown-of-Thorns starfish in eastern coastal waters in order to estimate the magnitude of the population of the starfish in these waters.

Class Condrichthyes consist of two sub-classes: Holocehali and. Elasmobranchii, the second one are more divers and has more importance. Selachimorpha (sharkes) and Batidoidimorpha (rays and skates) are two super-order of Elasmobranchii, which they have crucial role in ecological balance in marine ecosystmes. Except few cases, most of sharks and rays (rays and skates) are not well identified, so a lot of works need to be done in this regards. The area of study is located between 49°, 35' and 52°, 33' E and between 27°, 21' and 30°, 02' N in depth of 7 to 78 in. Study were conducted diuring August 1998, September 1999. Samples were taken during 3 sea cruises from 70 bottom trawl net. All sharks and batoid fishes were identified based on biometric specifications (weight, total, length and sexuality for both group and extra biometric specifications, disc width, disc length, and tail length only for, batoid fishes). The 1140 specimens of batoid fishes identified belonged to 6 families, and 18 species. 3 new species were identified, they are Himantura sp.1 and Himantura sp.2 belonged to Dasyatidae family and Rhinobatos sp. belonged to Rhinobatidae Familiy. It needs more works and more adaquate ducuments for cl.earfing scientific names of these species. The 275 specimens of sharks identified belonged to 6 families and 10 species. Chiloscyllium sp. belonged to Hemiscylliidae, family as a new species was identified.
