Summary of fishery statistics, 1986

This fisheries report summarises developments of the year 1986 in the region of the North West Water Authority. It provides catch statistics, rod and line and commercial catches for salmon and sea trout, fish culture and hatchery operations, restocking with trout and freshwater fish, upstream fish movement recorded at Authority fish counters, counts of salmon and sea trout spawning redds, fish mortalities, licences issued, and prosecutions.

A report is given of activities conducted by the Lake Kariba Fisheries Research Institute during the year 1986, describing the various conferences and research projects carried out. A list of publications by the Institute is also included.

This series will include all those people who, by means of their contributions, great and small, played a part in the consolidation of ichthyology in Argentina. The general plan of this work consists of individual factsheets containing a list of works by each author, along with reference bibliography and, whenever possible, personal pictures and additional material. The datasheets will be published primarily in chronological order, although this is subject to change by the availability of materials for successive editions. This work represents another approach for the recovery and revalorization of those who set the foundations of Argentine ichthyology while in diverse historical circumstances. I expect this to be the beginning of a major work that achieves the description of such a significant part of the history of natural sciences in Argentina.

Elasmobranch Landings for the Portuguese Commercial Fishery From 1986 to 2001

Portuguese commercial elasmobranch landings were analyzed for the period 1986–2001. An average of 5,169 (± 795 t) were landed yearly, representing 18 families, 29 genera, and 34 confirmed species. However, annual landings for the fishery generally decreased over time, with a corresponding increase in price per kilogram. The most important group, Raja spp., accounted for 33% of the landings or 26,916 t. They were followed by Centroscymnus coelolepis, Scyliorhinus spp., Centrophorus granulosus, and Centrophorus squamosus (accounting for 12%, 12%, 11%, and 9% of the landings, respectively). In the absence of CPUE data, the comparative trends of landings and price were employed as an indicator of the “status” of specific elasmobranch species. Raja spp., Centrophorus granulosus, Mustelus spp., Torpedo spp., and Squatinidae displayed indications of possible overexploitation, and they merit the focus of future research.

Humpback and Fin Whaling in the Gulf of Maine from 1800 to 1918

The history of whaling in the Gulf of Maine was reviewed primarily to estimate removals of humpback whales, Megaptera novaeangliae, especially during the 19th century. In the decades from 1800 to 1860, whaling effort consisted of a few localized, small-scale, shore-based enterprises on the coast of Maine and Cape Cod, Mass. Provincetown and Nantucket schooners occasionally conducted short cruises for humpback whales in New England waters. With the development of bomb-lance technology at mid century, the ease of killing humpback whales and fin whales, Balaenoptera physalus, increased. As a result, by the 1870’s there was considerable local interest in hunting rorquals (baleen whales in the family Balaenopteridae, which include the humpback and fin whales) in the Gulf of Maine. A few schooners were specially outfitted to take rorquals in the late 1870’s and 1880’s although their combined annual take was probably no more than a few tens of whales. Also in about 1880, fishing steamers began to be used to hunt whales in the Gulf of Maine. This steamer fishery grew to include about five vessels regularly engaged in whaling by the mid 1880’s but dwindled to only one vessel by the end of the decade. Fin whales constituted at least half of the catch, which exceeded 100 animals in some years. In the late 1880’s and thereafter, few whales were taken by whaling vessels in the Gulf of Maine.

Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee 3rd February, 1986

This is the report from the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 3rd February, 1986. The report contains sections on Fishing Licence Duties 1987, the provisions of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984, the Salmon Bill, and Fisheries Byelaws. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

West Cumbria Special Fisheries Advisory Group 16th May, 1986

This is the report from the West Cumbria Special Fisheries Advisory Group meeting, which was held on the 16th May, 1986. The report contains sections on a Fish Pass at Ennerdale, Authority proposals for discharge of compensation water from Ennerdale and a diagram of fish pass at Ennerdale. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee 19th May, 1986

This is the report from the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 19th May, 1986. The report contains sections on fishing licence duties, a liaison with Sea Fisheries Committees; applications to trap eels before the 25th June and Authority schemes for the benefit of fisheries and fishing. Also included is fish counter statistics, salmonid hatchery policy and a consultation paper setting out proposals for controlling the import and supply of anglers lead weights. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

This is the report from the Regional Fisheries Advisory Committee meeting, which was held on the 3rd November, 1986. The report contains sections on a proposed Haaf Net Limitation order, Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries in the Solway Firth, Ullswater Freshet pumping station, and Authority investigations into Acidity Problems in North West water. Also included is information on commercial salmon fishing in the River Lune and coarse fish close season in enclosed waters. The Fisheries Advisory Committee was part of the Regional Water Authorities, in this case the North West Water Authority. This preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

Lista de los peces de la provincia de San Juan

Esta serie tiene como finalidad dar a conocer las especies presentes en los diferentes estados provinciales. Tomando como base los trabajos de López et al., (2003); Reis et al., (2003); Liotta (2006) y Ferraris (2007) hemos actualizado el elenco ictiofaunístico en cada territorio provincial, siguiendo la macrosistemática de Nelson (2006). No se realizan, con excepción del nombre vulgar y localidad tipo, comentarios ni observaciones sobre las especies señaladas ya que estos se encuentran en la bibliografía adjunta. Se incluyen dos tablas que contienen información sobre especies introducidas y de aquellas de presencia dudosa o que requieren confirmación en el territorio provincial. En este último caso se cita el trabajo que las menciona por primera vez. Consideramos que este modesto aporte contribuirá a precisar el conocimiento ictiofaunístico regional ya que además de la lista de especies, presentamos el marco biogeográfico e hídrico correspondiente. Por otra parte, entendemos que la participación de autores involucrados en la región considerada, le da un verdadero sentido federal a esta contribución, además de reforzar vínculos entre los protagonistas de nuestra especialidad. En este nuevo número, presentamos la provincia de San Juan que se encuentra enclavada en el centro-oeste de nuestro territorio, limitada por las provincias de La Rioja, Mendoza y San Luis. Se presenta por primera vez una lista exhaustiva de la ictiofauna de la provincia de San Juan basada en la revisión bibliográfica y de material de referencia de las colecciones Ictiológicas de la Universidad Nacional de San Juan y del Museo de La Plata. Se citan 21 especies, de las cuales 15 no habían sido mencionadas con anterioridad (Arratia et al., 1983; Murúa y Acosta, 1997; Liotta, 2006). Ocho especies han sido introducidas principalmente con fines deportivos. Se menciona la presencia de Percichthys chilensis, lo que constituiría el primer registro formal de esta especie ya que López-Arbarello (2004) la menciona para el Río Tunuyán (Mendoza), sin material de referencia.

Semblanzas Ictiológicas: Juan Martín Díaz de Astarloa

A través de esta serie intentaremos conocer diferentes facetas personales de los integrantes de nuestra “comunidad”. El cuestionario, además de su principal objetivo, con sus respuestas quizás nos ayude a encontrar entre nosotros puntos en común que vayan más allá de nuestros temas de trabajo y sea un aporte a futuros estudios históricos. Esperamos que esta iniciativa pueda ser otro nexo entre los ictiólogos de la región, ya que consideramos que el resultado general trascendería nuestras fronteras.
