Thirteenth Annual Report for the year ended 31st March, 1964

This is the thirteenth Annual report of the Cumberland River Board on information of its activities and responsibilities on river management in its area between the beginning of April 1963, to the end of March 1964. The report contains 5 main sections on water resources, land drainage, fisheries, pollution, and finally the expenditure and income for the 12 month period. The first area that the report deals with is water resources, which includes information on the completion of gauging stations, abstraction of water and rainfall and river flow. The section on land drainage looks at work on improvement schemes, floods and information on maintenance work carried out on rivers including Wampool, Waver, Wiza, Derwent, Cocker, Keekle, Marron, Ehen, Irt, Esk, Mite, Lowther, Eden, Caldew and Petteril. The fisheries section covers 5 districts of the River Eden, Esk, Derwent, Ellen and South West Cumberland. It includes angling information and a general report for salmon and sea trout, brown trout and freshwater fish. Fish disease and fish hatchery are also covered as well as Byelaws and fisheries protection. The fourth section on pollution deals with water quality and information on sewage and trade effluents. The River Boards preceded the Environment Agency which came into existence in 1996.

River Dart Scale Reading Investigation Report on the 1964 Season

This is the third River Dart Scale Reading Investigation Report on the 1964 season by the Devon River Board. The object of this investigation is to examine, by means of scale-reading, the general biology of the salmon population of the River Dart. It reviews the methods used for the collection of scales and examination of the materials. It shows the results of the survey and the number of scales studied from each of the various sea-age classes, time of running with distribution of the sea-age groups throughout the season, fish sizes and smolt ages at migration. All are summarized in tables, and figures are also included plotting weight distributions for each age classes and frequency distributions. After three years of the investigation a pattern is emerging which shows that the Dart salmon population is mainly composed of four year old fish, which have spent two years in the river and then two year or little longer at sea.

Ictiólogos de la Argentina: Enrique Darío Permingeat

This series will include all those people who, by means of their contributions, great and small, played a part in the consolidation of ichthyology in Argentina. The general plan of this work consists of individual factsheets containing a list of works by each author, along with reference bibliography and, whenever possible, personal pictures and additional material. The datasheets will be published primarily in chronological order, although this is subject to change by the availability of materials for successive editions. This work represents another approach for the recovery and revalorization of those who set the foundations of Argentine ichthyology while in diverse historical circumstances. I expect this to be the beginning of a major work that achieves the description of such a significant part of the history of natural sciences in Argentina.

Semblanzas Ictiológicas: Daniel Enrique Figueroa

A través de esta serie intentaremos conocer diferentes facetas personales de los integrantes de nuestra “comunidad”. El cuestionario, además de su principal objetivo, con sus respuestas quizás nos ayude a encontrar entre nosotros puntos en común que vayan más allá de nuestros temas de trabajo y sea un aporte a futuros estudios históricos. Esperamos que esta iniciativa pueda ser otro nexo entre los ictiólogos de la región, ya que consideramos que el resultado general trascendería nuestras fronteras.

Dibujantes: Enrique Lachaud de Loqueyssie

En este número de la Serie Documentos presentamos a un dibujante de origen francés, radicado en la Argentina desde 1925 hasta su fallecimiento en 1958. Realizó numerosas ilustraciones de vertebrados, entre ellas, las más conocidas son las editadas en 1973 en el libro de Carlos Vigil, Aves argentinas y sudamericanas de la Editorial Atlántida. La idea de este documento surgió a raiz de un álbum artesanalmente improvisado, conteniendo láminas de peces recortadas de la revista La Chacra, que se encontraba en la biblioteca del Prof. Raúl H. Arámburu. A partir de ahí, con la valiosa colaboración de Raúl L. Carman y José Athor, recolectamos la información que documentamos, la que intenta reflejar una parte de la trayectoria del artista.

Semblanzas Ictiológicas Iberoamericanas: Germán Enrique Pequeño Reyes

A través de esta nueva serie tratamos de conocer diferentes aspectos personales de los integrantes de la comunidad ictiológica iberoamericana. Esta iniciativa, comparte el espíritu y objetivo de las semblanzas nacionales buscando informalmente, otro punto de unión en la “comunidad de ictiólogos iberoamericanos”. Quizás esté equivocado en mi apreciación, pero creo que vale la pena este intento, ya que, con la colaboración generosa e insoslayable de los integrantes de este “universo”, señalaremos un registro en el tiempo de la Ictiología Neotropical.

Inter-regional correlation in tree-growth variations in the western United States, 1513-1964, at ENSO, sunspot, and longer frequency bands

Cross-spectral analysis of regional tree-ring data suggests the spatial pattern of correlation between moisture variations in the Sierra Nevada of central California and in other parts of the western United States is frequency dependent. Short wavelengths (2.8 to 10.7 years), perhaps associated with El Niño/Southern Oscillation, are strongly coherent both to the north (Oregon) and to the south (Southern California). Longer wavelengths (45 to 75 years) are strongly coherent only to the north. Frequency bands corresponding to annual sunspot series were associated with relatively weak patterns of spatial correlation.

Pearl oyster survey, Gulf of Mannar, 1964

This note reports the results of the 1964 Pearl Bank Survey. These surveys are conducted annually by the Fisheries Department to assess the possibility of a fishery; for detailed accounts of past surveys see Sivalingam (1955, 1958) who has also provided (1962) a complete list of all literature on the Ceylon Pearl Banks. The 1964 survey was carried out with the Department's m. v. "North Star" (42') and m. v. "Seer" (45') and a 25' mechanised fishing boat as tender, between the 17th and 29th of April.
