Venomous Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois miles and P. volitans) are now established along the Southeast U.S.A. and parts of the Caribbean and pose a serious threat to reef fish communities of these regions. Lionfish are likely to invade the Gulf of Mexico and potentially South America in the near future. Introductions of lionfish were noted since the 1980s along south Florida and by 2000 lionfish were established off the coast of North Carolina. Lionfish are now one of the more numerous predatory reef fishes at some locations off the Southeast U.S.A. and Caribbean. Lionfish are largely piscivores that feed occasionally on economically important reef fishes. The trophic impacts of lionfish could alter the structure of native reef fish communities and potentially hamper stock rebuilding efforts of the Snapper –Grouper Complex. Additional effects of the lionfish invasion are far-reaching and could increase coral reef ecosystem stress, threaten human health, and ultimately impact the marine aquarium industry. Control strategies for lionfish are needed to mitigate impacts, especially in protected areas. This integrated assessment provides a general overview of the biology and ecology of lionfish including genetics, taxonomy, reproductive biology, early life history and dispersal, venom defense and predation, and feeding ecology. In addition, alternative management actions for mitigating the negative impacts of lionfish, approaches for reducing the risk of future invasions, and directions for future research are provided.

The preliminary results obtained from the study of stomach contents of specimens of Gymnarchus niloticus of a size ranging from 56 cm (66 grams) to 152 cm (12.0 kg.) from August to December, 1982 indicate for these sizes an exclusively piscivorous diet. The predominant prey species in Lake Chad are Tilapia/Sarotherodon , and Clarias . The prey is often cut in two parts before it is swallowed. Small prey may be swallowed whole. The implication of this prey capture method on prey-predator relationship and therefore the impact of the predator is discussed. The breeding season of Gymnarchus niloticus in Lake Chad has been deduced from observation of changes in gonad maturity stages and the results indicate that breeding takes place between August and November. Data are also presented on the fecundity, size of ripe eggs and probable size at maturity
Post-larval feeding of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell, 1802) on cultured zooplankton and artemia diets
Resumo:
The findings are presented of a study undertaken to provide baseline information that may be employed to develop a simplified hatchery technique for postlarval feeding of Clarias gariepinus on zooplankton cultured indoors in small aquaria. Three series of experiments were undertaken to identify the type and quantity of organic manure that would produce maximum densities of zooplankton in the shortest time in indoor cultures. Results suggest the possibility of the culture of natural zooplankton populations for use in larval feeding of C. gariepinus fry. Its effective hatchery application would bring about reduction in the unit cost per fingerling and ensure continuous hatchery operations even in the absence of Artemia cysts

The alkaloid drug colchicine is a mitotic inhibitor. The results of this study show that colchicine influence the normal functioning of the mitotic process in Sarotherodon galilaeus, S. melanotheron and the hybrid S. galilaeus, X S. melanotheron leading to the production of unusual chromosomal events such as anaphase bridges, laggards and polyploid cells. These unusual events could have serious genetic implications in the area of variability of the chromosome number. The use of colchicine also produces results with consistent karyotypes and better morphology as well as providing detailed information on the behaviour of the chromosome of the early life of fish. The knowledge of such information will be of great use in cytotaxonomy, fish breeding and in studying the effects of sub-lethal levels of water pollutants on fish

ENGLISH: Increments in otoliths (sagittae) were examined, using light and scanning electron microscopy, to determine ages and estimate growth rates of larval and early-juvenile black skipjack, Euthynnus lineatus. Larvae and juveniles were collected between 1987 and 1989 from coastal waters of Panama in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Results from a laboratory experiment indicated that immersion for 6 and 12 hours in a 200 mg/L solution of tetracycline hydrochloride adequately marks otoliths and that increments are formed daily in the sagittae of postflexion larvae and early juveniles. Further, survival rates of tetracycline-treated fish were not significantly different from those of control fish. Growth rates were derived from length-age relationships of 218 field-collected specimens ranging in size from 5.7 to 20.3 mm SL. A growth rate of 0.70 mm/d was estimated from the weighted regression of standard length on age for all specimens. This rate lies within the range reported for larvae and early juveniles of other species of subtropical and tropical scombrids. Growth rates of postflexion larvae and early juveniles were not significantly different between the rainy season in July-August 1988 and the dry, upwelling season in January-February 1989. Growth was, however, significantly more variable for older individuals in July-August than in January-February, and may correspond, in part, to seasonal patchiness of prey. The growth rates of the otoliths relative to fish length were also not significantly different between seasons; however, the otoliths were larger relative to the lengths of fish collected in the rainy season, which may reflect slower growth during earlier larval stages. The food and feeding habits of Tilapia zillii in the fish farm of Ondo State University, Akungba - Akoko, Nigeria, were studied by gut analysis. Examinations of 150 specimens showed that Nymphea formed the main bulk of food consumed. Spirogyra, Pithophora and Compsopogon occurred frequently while Pistia detritus and plant remains featured less frequently. Variation in the frequency of occurrence of the various food items was observed among the various sizes of samples. The samples within the middle - size group fed on both higher plant and filamentous algae while the young and higher fish consumed exclusively filamentous algae. On the basis of food items found in the gut, Tilapia zillii was classified as primary consumers

The distribution of Oreochromis niloticus was studied in Opa reservoir (Nigeria) using a graded set of gillnets while the food and feeding habits were studied using a castnet to collect the fish samples. About 90% of the fish specimens were caught near the reservoir bottom while about 69% of the specimens were caught within the inshore area of the reservoir. The species fed mainly on detritus, algae and higher plants. Feeding rhythm in O. niloticus started around 6.00 a.m. and reached a peak by 3.00 p.m. but then declined gradually until 6.00 p.m. These results can be utilized for the proper management of the fish species in the reservoir

Fry of Heterobranchus bidorsalis (mean weight, 0.03g) were fed at 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50% of their body weight (bw)/day in outdoor concrete tanks in New Bussa, Nigeria. The fry attained the highest average weight of 6.66g in 10 weeks when fed at 40% bw/day. Feed conversion ratio ranged from 2.13 to 9.65, the protein efficiency ratio from 1.33 to 5.93. Results indicated that H. bidorsalis are efficient feed converters. Feed intake was significantly different (p<0.05) between the treatments, specific growth rate (SGR), daily growth rate (DGR), production and average weight gain indicated that 40% of fish biomass was the optimum feeding level

Oreochromis niloticus (L.) were caught by beach seining, hook and line and trawling from Nyanza Gulf, lake Victoria (Kenya) in order to study their feeding ecology and population characteristics. Collected fish were weighed and TL measured immediately after capture. Fish were dissected and sexed. Stomach contents were removed and preserved in 4% buffered formalin for laboratory analysis. In the laboratory items were sorted into categories such as three quarters, half and quarter and awarded 20, 15 and 5 points respectively. Main food items for O. niloticus from November 1998 to March 1999 were insects, algae, fish and plant material. Increase in insects in the diet of O. niloticus might be attributed to the lake infestation by water hyacinth which harbours different species of insects

Nutrient digestibility and amino acid availability were assessed in sharp-toothed catfish, Clarias gariepinus, fingerlings fed diets containing soyabean flour (SF) - Poultry meat meal (PMM) blends (25:75. 50:50, and 75:25) and 0.5 of 1.0%, Cr sub(2)0 sub(3). There was agreement between the pattern of overall protein digestibility and average amino acid availability despite the variability in individual amino acid availability the best dry matter, lipid and protein digestibility coefficients, and amino acid availability values were obtained with diets containing 0.5% Cr sub(2)0 sub(3). Chromic Oxide inclusion level appeared to affect nutrient availability. Increased marker level resulted into decreased nutrient digestibility coefficients. Similarly, these diets generated lower fecal crude protein than those with 1.0% Cr sub(2)0 sub(3). However, the latter group recorded higher protein retention efficiency. Dry mailer and lipid of diets containing more soyabean flour seemed to be more digestible than those of poultry meat meal. Similar trend was observed for the apparent availability of the amino acids. This investigation has indicated that low level of marker was better in digestibility study. Utilization of more SF than PMM in the diets of this catfish was more beneficial and should be encouraged in the feed industries producing catfish diets towards a better feed and waste management strategies in this aquaculture operation

A total of 61 Heterotis niloticus specimen were examined and evaluated to determine the food and feeding habits using the frequency of occurrence, point and dominance methods. The specimens had mean standard length of 27.09 plus or minus 4.73cm, total length of 33.40cm body weight of 90-900g. The gut length ranges from 34-104cm while the gut weight range from 2.79-130g. It was observed that the fish fed mostly on plankton with rotifers and polyscysits having the highest number of frequency and dominant value with mean value of 43.03 plus or minus 4.12 and 11.73 plus or minus 1.15, 37.45 plus or minus 3.27 and 8.32 plus or minus 0.38 respectively. Arcella had the least mean frequency of occurrence of 3.27 plus or minus 17. Amoeba sp had the least mean dominance value of 7.06 plus or minus 50 and Aphnocapsa sp had the least mean frequency of occurrence of 1.10 plus or minus 0.29 and Navicula sp had the least mean dominance value of 4.31 plus or minus 1.11. Heterotis niloticus of River Kaduna flood plain is therefore considered to be predominantly planktivorous
