Previous authors observed the influence of temperature variations in movement of fishes and noticed better catches in bottom set nets during summer in Tungabhadra reservoir. The present account reports on similar observations in Gobindsagar reservoir.

Results of laboratory and field trials on cathodic protection of aluminium sheathing in fishing boats by ternary aluminium anodes are presented. The high negative potential of 1.06 V with respect to saturated calomel electrode, its appreciably low anodic polarization and high current output are favourable factors for using the ternary aluminium anodes. The low rate of consumption of the anode material under service trials attests its economic viability.

Hydrographical parameters, namely temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and density of the fishing grounds off Mangalore extending over an area of ca 850 km² have been studied during March 1976 - March 1977. Twelve stations along three transects up to 50 m isobaths were located for sampling. The vertical distribution of temperature show three distinct phases, namely, a period of conspicuous variation, a short intermediary phase and a period of thermal stability. The dissolved oxygen of the bottom waters was drastically low during September. Salinity fluctuations were not considerable between months and depths. Dense waters existed over the shelf region, especially along the bottom during september and to a certain extent in october also. The distribution patterns of temperature, dissolved oxygen and density clearly indicate the movement of cold, dense, oxygen-poor- bottom waters from greater depths to the upper reaches of the shelf during September.

Scores of publications on spiny lobsters and their fishing techniques are available from various parts of the world. A variety of fishing gears which vary in design and operation are employed for exploiting lobsters. A review of the work carried out on spiny lobsters with special reference to their distribution, fishing gear, fishing methods, baits and crafts in India, Sri Lanka, United States, Australia, South Africa, United Kingdom, Ireland and Portugal based on selected literature are considered and discussed.

Experiments conducted with frame nets of sizes 1.0 m, 1.25 m 1.5 m, 1.75 m and 2.0 m in Hirakud reservoir showed that the net with 1.75 m frame gave the highest catches.

The authors conducted a series of experiments to evaluate the relative efficiency of nylon over cotton in tropical waters, particularly in reservoir fishing. The experiments were conducted in the Gobindsagar reservoir (Himachal Pradesh/Punjab). The nets made with both materials were identical in essential details like twine size, mesh size, number of floats arid sinkers and hanging coefficients.

Fishing experiments were undertaken to study the relative utility of a newly designed four seam type net on a conventional two seam net at the centre along the East Coast in both inshore and deeper zones (up to 100m.) and the results indicated that the new four seam net has given higher catch rate of 6 to 8% more with higher catch rate of fish supposed to belong to off bottom region. Further this gear found more selective in obtaining Lactarius, which is one of the good variety of fish from trawlers, in both quantity as well as in quality. In terms of horizontal spread this new net gave less on comparison with the conventional two seam net, thereby showed corresponding increase in vertical spread; but warp tension remained more or less same in both the gear. Both gear have worked equally well in majority of depth ranges experimented with optimum spread. Finally the results indicated that the new net can work well from the present trawlers along the coast.

Consequent on the great emphasis given to irrigation, power generation and flood control, several river valley reservoirs have been formed. The fact that these reservoirs support a fairly rich fishery potential needs no special mention. The total reservoir water area in the country is 6.4 lakh h.a. (16 lakh acres) and the yield is 5 to 8 kgm/h. a. in certain reservoirs, rising up to 40 kgm/h.a. in some of the highly productive ones.

Although high tensile brassess of copper-zinc alloys (Manganese bronze) find extensive use in all marine applications, under aggressive sea-water, marine propellers cast out of such an alloy frequently suffer heavy corrosion damages due to dezincification. An interesting case history where a number of propellers have undergone dezincification in the Cochin backwaters is narrated in this paper.

Modern fishing boats have to be built not only on perfect lines but also with sound and strong construction materials that will ensure a long lasting trouble free service commensurate with the heavy capital investment involved. Choice of construction materials for fishing boats need careful scrutiny as they have to perform too well under most aggressive environments-sea-water and marine atmosphere. A number of alternative boat-building materials are now available whose comparative merits and demerits as well as comparative costs are brought out in this paper.

Suitable areas for fishing have been located in the middle and upper regions of the Mahanadi course of Hirakud reservoir. In the former the suitable period is during summer and beginning of monsoons, and in the latter in summer and winter months. The fishery of the reservoir is contributed by four species namely S. silondia, L. fimbriatus, C. mirgala and C. catla.

A variety of synthetic fibres are at present in use as fishing gear material, the earliest one being the polyvinyl chloride group introduced for traps in 1936 (von. Brandt 1957). Since then synthetic fibres became increasingly popular among the advanced fishing nations of the world. The latest synthetic fibre which has been successfully used in fishing is polypropylene developed in Italy in 1954.

Nearly 10,000 mechanised fishing trawlers mostly built of wood and about 100 trawlers built of steel besides a few fiberglass reinforced plastic and a couple of ferro-cement boats constitute the modern fishing fleet of India at present. Metallic corrosion in sea water is a very well-known phenomenon in all ships and various other marine structures; the exact financial loss and the material breakdowns have never been fully realized among the trawler owners in India. The Central Institute of Fisheries Technology at Cochin has been studying these problems for some years and has been able to assess the significance of underwater corrosion particularly of the hull below water line in the trawlers and suitable remedial measures have been suggested in this paper.

Size grade composition of different species of prawn caught by various back water fishing gear have been enumerated. 57 to 75% of P. indicus captured was less than 10 cm in length. M. dobsoni and M. monoceros captured were less than 10 cm in length. A cod end mesh size of 20-25 mm has been recommended for stake nets for the capture of P. indicus of 10 cm length along with other species.

The authors have discussed the results of comparative fishing, conducted in the Govindsagar reservoir, with simple monofilament and multifilament gill nets. The experiments were conducted both in clear and turbid water. In both these water masses, the monofilament gill net has been found to be more efficient. It is also found that the four major species of fishes of the reservoir have not shown any preference towards a specific gear.
