This contribution provides an overview of the marine capture fisheries off the coast of Karnataka State, India. It covers the main fisheries and fishing gears, production trends (by main species /groups and gears), assessment results and fisheries management. Marine fisheries production in the State increased from about 57,000 t/year during the 1950s to a peak of about 250,000 in 1989, declining to about 150,000 t/year by 1995. Substantive changes have been noted in dominant gears and species groups contributing to the catch between 1980-84 and 1990-95. Results of assessments indicate that many commercially important stocks are overfished, thus requiring a reduction in fishing effort.

This paper presents an evaluation of the 15-week course on Training in Fisheries Planning and Management being offered at the University of Namibia since 1991. This course includes instruction in fisheries technology, fisheries biology, fisheries law and law of the sea, fisheries economics, fisheries sociology, environment impact assessment, planning and management, the logical framework approach to planning and computer literacy. The participats in the course have rated the various elements in a range of 2.9 to 4.7 out of a maximum of 5 points.

An overview of the fisheries of St. Lucia using currently available information is presented. The fisheries are entirely artisanal, characterized by relatively simple and inexpensive gears and boats. The 2,100 fishers (who land roughly 750 t per year of fish) appear socially and economically marginalized and beset by low occupational mobility. The status of the major species groups they exploit are briefly discussed, and initial indications of overfishing are noted. Consideration on both resource and resource-user situations in management of the island's fisheries is emphasized.

This paper briefly outlines the implications of making a decision on the most appropriate alternative for carrying out stock assessments and the reasons for previous failures to conserve finfish stocks for sustainable use. The Mathews (1987) approach utilizing Age-Length Catch-Effort Keys (ALCEK) is briefly reviewed, and a suggested overall approach for the assessment of the finfish resources of the Caribbean community is outlined. With recent initiatives towards use of the precautionary approach and reference points, Carribean community countries are advised to revisit the question of the models to be utilized for the assessment of their fish stocks, paying due attention to the quantity, quality and applicability of data now being collected.

The fish habitats along an inshore water stretch along the eastern/central coast of Lake Tanganyika are discussed and a quantitative analysis of the species composition, distribution and abundance of the littoral fishes within the area of study is presented. Seventy-one species of fish belonging to 48 genera and to 15 fish families were collected and identified during the study. The majority of species belonged to the Cichlidae family. Intensive beach seining for clupeids is suggested as one of the causes of low fish biomass in the area surveyed. The areas south of Kigoma appeared to contain more fish, with average catch rates of 11.7 kg/haul than those north of Kigoma where average catch rates of 7.6 kg/haul were recorded. Some suggestions for improved management of these resources are given.

User involvement in fisheries management has been around for some time, but few analytical papers have been published on the subject in Africa. Most of these initiatives fall under the rubric of co-management. But what is the concept of co-management in theory and how does it work in practice? In reviewing a comprehensive artisanal fisheries development project, we will attempt to answer this question in the context of The Gambia.

The differences between fishes in their size, behavior and food make them more or less vulnerable to fishing pressure. Large predators, long-lived fish, most trawl species and pelagic schooling fishes will possibly become extinct, to be replaced by small nonschooling unpalatable species such as lanternfish.

Preservation of marine biodiversity deserves serious consideration as almost 65% of the earth's organisms (excluding insects) are marine. There is little knowledge at present on the status of marine biodiversity. However, the seas are an important source of protein for human consumption and genetic diversity is a key factor in ecosystem functioning, stability and resilience. Overfishing and destructive practices may have unalterable impact on marine biodiversity. This paper discusses measures that can be adopted to protect the most productive areas of the marine ecosystem.

This article provides an example of weak linkages between research and fisheries management despite the pressure of many "actors" and institutions on both sides. Managers must learn to listen to scientists; the latter need to become entrepreneural; and appropriate fora are required to bring the actors together.

This article presents the events and outcome of an international symposium on fisheries management titled, "Reinventing Fisheries Management", held at the Fisheries Centre of the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, 21-23 February 1996. The title itself suggests that the topics would reach beyond present day paradigm as indeed they did.

There are many similarities, and some differences, between community-based coastal resource management (CBCRM) and co-management. When CBCRM is considered an integral part of co-management, there is a new category of co-management which can be called community-based co-management. Community-based co-management is people-centered, community-oriented, resources-based and partnership-based. The implementation of community-based co-management has four components: resources management, community and economic development, capability building, and institutional support.
