EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: At present, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) criteria used to assess whether a population qualifies for inclusion in the CITES Appendices relate to (A) size of the population, (B) area of distribution of the population, and (C) declines in the size of the population. Numeric guidelines are provided as indicators of a small population (less than 5,000 individuals), a small subpopulation (less than 500 individuals), a restricted area of distribution for a population (less than 10,000 km2), a restricted area of distribution for a subpopula-tion (less than 500 km2), a high rate of decline (a decrease of 50% or more in total within 5 years or two generations whichever is longer or, for a small wild population, a decline of 20% or more in total within ten years or three generations whichever is longer), large fluctuations (population size or area of distribution varies widely, rapidly and frequently, with a variation greater than one order of magnitude), and a short-term fluctuation (one of two years or less). The Working Group discussed several broad issues of relevance to the CITES criteria and guidelines. These included the importance of the historical extent of decline versus the recent rate of decline; the utility and validity of incorporating relative population productivity into decline criteria; the utility of absolute numbers for defining small populations or small areas; the appropriateness of generation times as time frames for examining declines; the importance of the magnitude and frequency of fluctuations as factors affecting risk of extinction; and the overall utility of numeric thresh-olds or guidelines.

The findings are provided of a literature search conducted on the topic of fishpond aeration, using ASFA for the period 1971-1990 and the ICLARM library and professional staff collection. A total of 97 articles were found. The type of publication is indicated and details given of some of the recent publications and some research institutions working in this field.

A discussion is presented on the 2 approaches - holism and reductionism - in the study of environmental sciences, making reference to various projects presently being conducted by ICLARM and its collaborators using the holistic approach. Schematic representations are given of ICLARM's FISHBASE, the ECOPATH II model of the Peruvian upwelling ecosystem and submodels which may be incorporated in large simulation models of the upwelling system, and also material flows in a rice-fish/shrimp integrated farming systems of the Mekong Delta, Vietnam.

The findings are presented of a survey conducted regarding research on Mugil culture; emphasis was given to publications from the tropics and subtropics, particularly from developing regions. The literature search used ASFA, the ICLARM library and professional staff collections. It was found that during the period 1932-90 there were 203 articles published; of these, 41% were on the subject of reproduction, induced breeding and seed, 26% on culture systems, 12% on general discussions, 11% on diseases/parasites, and 10% on nutrition.

This book is a research output on fishing gears used in the beels from Sunamgan Haor areas under the initiative of the Community Based Resource Management Project (CBRMP) of LGED and WorldFish. It presents a collection of gears recorded in the CBRMP project area during monitoring conducted by WorldFish from 2008 to 2012. The book contains a total of 63 gears found in Sunamganj haor area.

This book is a modest attempt at identifying Sunamganj haor fish species, especially in areas falling under the Sunamganj Community Based Resource Management Project (CBRMP). It contains a total of 126 fish species from 39 families found in the Sunamganj haor area. CBRMP has promoted community based fisheries management approaches that, along with their livelihoods focus, are helping to preserve and enhance natural fish stocks in the hoar basin. WorldFish support to LGED involves a number of areas including monitoring the impacts of CBRMP on fish catch, bio-diversity and livelihoods.
