The present status of the Himalayan mahseer in the three lakes of Nainital district of Uttar Pradesh is discussed based on the catch data from 1983-84 to 1992-93. Yield of mahseer have shown a gradual decline in the recent years. Besides catch statistics, market arrivals and availability of fish to anglers have also shown a marked decline. Tor putitora is being considered as an endangered fish. It is therefore necessary to repopulate the lakes with the mahseer by adopting better management practices like stocking the lakes continually with sufficient mahseer fingerlings and enforce strict conservation measures to stop killing of juveniles.

The present study was aimed to evaluate the characteristics of the olive barb sperm. Milt was collected fortnightly from 49 male fish (mean weight 90.8 g and length 18.64 cm) from April to July in 2008. In the olive barb ejaculated milt, volume (µl/g), motility (%), duration of motility (s), concentration (x 10 super(10)/ml) and pH values were found to be 6.06±0.32, 88.27±0.71, 171.41±7.41, 5.16±0.05 and 7.75±0.04, respectively. Milt volume was significantly (P<0.05) correlated with sperm concentration. Milt volume, sperm concentration, motility and duration of motility significantly varied (P<0.05) during spawning season.

Lake Victoria in East Africa, supports socio-economically important fisheries for more than 30 million inhabitants in the lake basin. The lake had until the 1970's a diverse fish assemblage dominated by haplochromines species which formed at least 83% of the fish biomass (Kudhongania & Cordone 1974). The more than 500 haplochromine species in Lake Victoria, over 99% of them endemic, exploited virtually all the food sources in the lake (Witte and van Oijen 1990). Each species had its own unique combination of food and habitat preference (Goldschmidt et al., 1990).
