Recent observations on the exploitation of the fish stocks of Lake Victoria, Uganda

The data from the able sources has been used in this paper to make observations on the exploitation of the fish stocks in Lake Victoria since 1981. The paper focuses on species composition of the catch, catch rates, average size of the individual fish landed and fish production. On the basis of these parameters and developments in the fishery, the paper also presents some observations and comments on the future prospects of the fish stocks in the lake.

The importance of temporary waters for Diptera (true-flies)

Flies are the largest order of wetland insects in Britain. Of 6668 known species, larvae of at least 1138 are considered to be aquatic while a large number, perhaps as many again, are associated with wetlands. Despite this abundance of species they have been neglected in nearly all studies of temporary ponds. The prerequisites that are usually quoted for surviving in temporary pools are an ability to reach maturity before the system dries out, physiological or behavioural mechanisms to survive the dry period, and an ability to recolonise. Larvae of many British wetland Diptera have these features, which should enable them to develop and survive in temporary ponds. Some examples are considered in this article, with brief comments on adaptations in insects from other geographical regions.

Methods for the estimation of zooplankton biomasses, used in the Oceanographic Research Center of Abidjan are presented. They deal with settled and displacement volumes, dry weight and ash-free dry weight, elementary carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus composition. The dry weight method is detailed: elimination of salt by a fresh water stream, preservation of dry samples at -20 degrees Celsius, rehydration during weighing. A few comments on the 'CHN' analysed values are made: at 1,100 degrees Celsius, most of the carbon is organic, only 10% of the mineral fraction being analysed.

Lune Wyre & Furness Fisheries Advisory Committee 24th October, 1977
