Currently there are 2 sources of freshwater prawn Macrobrachium rosenbergii production in Vietnam - natural production from the rivers and canals and aquaculture production from ponds and ricefields. An account is given of the production of this prawn in the Mekong Delta. The prawns are harvested primarily by a common small scale method using shelter traps. The total annual freshwater prawn production in Vietnam during 1985-90 was reported to vary from 5000 to 8000 tons, most of it from natural fisheries; although there are no official statistics on the production of farmed prawns, the amount is believed to be very small. The grow-out system includes intensive monospecies pond culture, and semi-intensive or extensive integrated rice-prawn or vegetable-prawn culture.

Economic aspects of producing liquid and dried silage from silver belly (Leiognathus splendens) in Sri Lanka are considered. A discounted cash flow analysis for the production of a dried fish silage/rice bran product suitable for use in compounded poultry feeds shows that the internal rate of return for a 10-year project would be between 34-77% and for a 5-year project between 26-73%. Thus it is concluded that the project would be extremely profitable.

Cost-profit analysis and market testing of some value-added products from silver carp such as fish mince block, fish sausage, fish ball, fish stick and fish burger were analyzed during April 2001 to March 2002. The study also explored the possibility to involve rural low-income people in the production and marketing of such products. The production of silver carp was higher in greater Jessore and Mymensingh districts but the price remained low during the peak-harvesting season in October to November. The price varied with size of the fish, season, market characteristics and effective demand of the buyers. Price of about 500 g size fish was found to be Tk. 20-25/kg in the rural markets. The average size of fish in the rural markets was 3S0-550 g while that in the urban markets it was 700-1,200 g. The cost of production of the value added products and profit margin were assessed on the basis of market price of the raw material as well as that of the finished products, transportation, storage and marketing costs. The profit margins of 34%, 39%, 81% and 31% of their sales price were obtained for fish sausage, fish ball, fish stick and fish burger, respectively. Actual production cost could be minimized if the fish is purchased directly from the farmers. Consumer's acceptance and marketability tests showed that both rural and urban people preferred fish ball than fish sausage. However, response towards the taste, flavor and color of fish ball and fish sausage was found to vary with occupations and age of the consumers. A correlation was observed between age group and acceptance of new products. Fish ball, fish stick and fish burger were found to be the most preferable items to the farmers because of easy formulation process with common utensils. Good marketing linkage and requirement of capital had been identified as the prerequisites for operating small-scale business on value-added fish products.

The experiment was carried out to study the impacts of fish sanctuaries on the production and diversity of plankton in beels of haor region at Mithamain Upazila of Kishoreganj district in Bangladesh during July 2004 to June 2005. A total of 75 (60 phyto and 15 zooplankton) and 74 (59 phyto and 15 zooplankton) genera of plankton were recorded in T-1 and T-2 (with sanctuary) respectively while only 50 (39 phyto and 11 zooplankton) genera were obtained in T-3 (control). Chlorophyceae and Copepoda were the most dominant group of phytoplankton and zooplankton respectively in all the treatments. The total phytoplankton numbers were found to range from 5472 to 35,833 cells/l and 5250 to 40,472 cells/l and total zooplankton from 667 to 1722 cells/l and 611 to 1667 cells/l in T-1 and T-2 respectively in sanctuary sites whereas the ranges of phytoplankton and zooplankton in the control site were 1778 to 29,333 cells/l and 56 to 1056 cells/l respectively. The maximum phytoplankton and zooplankton were recorded during winter season in all the treatments. The ranges of total plankton were 6194 to 37,500 cells/l, 6028 to 41,806 cells/l and 1889 to 29,444 cells/l in T-1, T-2 and T-3 respectively. The phytoplankton, zooplankton and total plankton recorded in treatments with sanctuary were significantly higher (p<0.5) than the treatment without sanctuary (control) indicating positive impacts of sanctuaries on the production of plankton. Between two treatments of fish sanctuaries the total plankton populations were comparatively higher in T-2 than T-1.

ENGLISH: Knowledge of the kinds of organisms eaten by tunas, and the relative importance of different kinds of organisms in different situations, is of importance to our understanding of regional and local aggregations and of the behavior of the tropical tunas. Determination of the relative importance of benthic forms in the stomachs of tunas captured in the vicinity of islands and offshore banks, compared with the forms found in the stomachs of those from oceanic areas, distant from these shoal areas, is useful to the understanding of the mechanisms by which the islands and banks attract tuna. A thorough knowledge of the diet may also reveal more about the seasonal and annual variations in the distribution of these fish along the coasts of Mexico, Central America and elsewhere. A knowledge of the diet of the tunas is basic to quantitative studies of the zooplankton and nekton in the Eastern Pacific Ocean with reference to the production of tunas. Studies of the diet of the tropical tunas by examination of stomach contents was, therefore, commenced in late 1957. The production of healthy high quality female European eel in recycle systems is proposed as a means to secure sufficient numbers of silver eel for spawning migration in order to meet the requirements of the European Commission’s proposal for a Regulation for the recovery of the stock of the European eel. Main advantages besides checks for parasites and viral diseases and avoidance of elevated levels of specific pollutants are the easily controllable numbers of spawners to be released and a reduction of labour and costs that will occur when acting along the lines of the Commission’s proposal.

Induced breeding technique by hypophysation is being applied at the Kainji Lake Research Institute Fisheries Division Hatchery complex in New Bussa, Nigeria, for the production of Clarias fry and fingerlings in indoor and outdoor concrete tank systems. The hatchlings are fed on livefood (zooplankton) and artificial feed. Source of zooplankton is from cultured stock which is maintained throughout the breeding season by fertilization. Production values show that an average of over 4,000 hatchlings (larvae) can be produced by a female breeder (over-700g wt) and percentage survival after two months ranges between 70 to 75%. With the proposed modification and expansion project, an estimated production of over 0.5 million fingerlings per breeding season is projected

ENGLISH: The abundance of skipjack larvae in the central and western Pacific approximately doubled for every 1°C increase in sea-surface temperature (SST) from 23°C to a maximum of about 29°C, and then usually decreased with further increases in SST. Skipjack larvae are scarce in the eastern Pacific Ocean (EPO), so most skipjack recruits and adults in this area are believed to have originated in the central and, possibly, the western Pacific. The catch per unit of effort (CPUE), in short tons per day's fishing, and the catch rate, in number of fish per day's fishing, are estimates of apparent abundance in a fishery. The logarithm of the annual CPUE for skipjack for international baitboats in the EPO for the 1934-1960 period was positively correlated with SST in the spawning area in the central Pacific 18 months earlier (r2 0.31), during the July-June period when most of the recruits in each cohort were presumed to have been spawned. Adequate data for other environmental variables were not available for testing with the baitboat data. The other environmental variables available and selected for testing for correlation with estimates of skipjack abundance for purse seiners for the 1961-1984 period and the reasons for their selection are as follows. 1)Wind-mixing index (WMI). The degree of mixing in the upper layers of the ocean is proportional to the cube of the wind speed, called WMI. The degree of mixing in the spawning areas of the central and the western Pacific may affect the concentration of organisms that skipjack larvae feed upon, thereby influencing their survival, and ultimately determining cohort strength and the number of recruits to the eastern Pacific fishery. 2) SST in the fishing areas at the time of fishing (SST). The CPUE for yellowfin tuna has been shown to be inversely related to SST in the fishing areas, and there are indications that skipjack CPUE is lower during EI Nino events when SST is higher than normal. 3) North-south SST gradient across the thermal front off the Gulf of Guayaquil. This is a measure of the degree of upwelling and nutrient enrichment of the upper waters south of the front and ultimately of the production of food for tunas. 4) Speed of the North Equatorial Countercurrent (NECC). Young skipjack may migrate from the central Pacific to the EPO in the eastward flowing NECC; if so, the number of recruits might be affected by variations in the speed of the current. The logarithm of the annual catch rate of skipjack recruits by international purse seiners in the EPO for the 1961-1984 period was positively correlated with SST in the spawning area of the central Pacific 18 months earlier (r2 = 0.21),and inversely correlated with WMI in the spawning area 18 months earlier (r2 0.46). The logarithm of CPUE for purse seiners in the area off the Gulf of Guayaquil was not correlated with SST in the spawning area 18 months earlier, but was inversely correlated with WMI in the spawning area 18 months earlier (r2 = 0.19), and inversely correlated with the north-south SST gradient in the fishing area at the time of fishing (r2 0.32). Neither of these estimates of apparent abundance from purse seiners were correlated with SST in the fishing areas, or with the speed of the NECC at earlier times. The alkaloid drug colchicine is a mitotic inhibitor. The results of this study show that colchicine influence the normal functioning of the mitotic process in Sarotherodon galilaeus, S. melanotheron and the hybrid S. galilaeus, X S. melanotheron leading to the production of unusual chromosomal events such as anaphase bridges, laggards and polyploid cells. These unusual events could have serious genetic implications in the area of variability of the chromosome number. The use of colchicine also produces results with consistent karyotypes and better morphology as well as providing detailed information on the behaviour of the chromosome of the early life of fish. The knowledge of such information will be of great use in cytotaxonomy, fish breeding and in studying the effects of sub-lethal levels of water pollutants on fish

This short interim progress report builds on previous progress reports which have described the quantification of the process both within and between lakes of different degrees of eutrophication. These data indicated that slight changes in methodology, particularly when investigating sediment deposits, could grossly affect the measured activity. The aim of the present research was an attempt to rationalize these differences. If this could be achieved it would enable meaningful interpretation of published data obtained using different methods and therefore enlarge the available database. In addition some observations have been made on the production of nitrite by Grasmere profundal sediment slurries sampled during the circulation period.

Like other rivers in the Paris area, the Oise is subject to important seasonal algal blooms. This eutrophication generates notable problems for the production of drinking-water from a treatment plant on the river at Méry. A mathematical model has been developed to simulate variation in water quality in a pre-treatment storage basin, and another model is currently being adapted to model the River Oise. Integration of the two models should provide a comprehensive tool for predicting variations of phytoplankton and water-quality parameters associated with algal blooms. This will be a decision-aid for optimizing control of the treatment process for providing potable water.

The production of snakeskin gourami (Trichogaster pectoralis) from wild stocks and traditional culture systems has been declining in central Thailand, although they are on the increase in modern culture practices adopted in some provinces. Net yields of T. pectoralis in traditional systems are about a third of those in modern systems. The potential of T. pectoralis as a candidate for more intensive waste-fed polyculture appears promising if seed supply constraints can be removed.
