Catch composition of penaeid prawns caught with fish corrals at Batan Bay, Philippines

The study was undertaken to ascertain the commercially important species of penaeid prawns caught in Batan Bay, Philippines and their abundance in fish corrals. A total of 12 species were commercially caught: Penaeus monodon, P. semisulcatus, P. merguiensis, P. indicus, P. latisulcatus, P. japonicus, P. canaliculatus, Metapenaeus ensis, M. endeavouri, M. dalli, M. elegans, and Trachypenaeus fulvus.

Integrating effluent management

The paper discusses a closed recycle shrimp farm in Thailand which integrates effluent management. The closed recycle system can reduce risk of heavy metals, pesticides, ammonia, and other toxic particles coming in with water from natural sources by reducing the quantity of water brought to the farm.

Product development: market depends on good processing

The article presents the harvesting techniques, and handling and processing of cultured carps. Carps are harvested similarly with all other species in tropical countries while temperate countries, winter season is much considered. Water quality is an important factor to be considered because it can affect the hygienic and organoleptic quality of fish. Carps were commonly sold live, filleted, cut into sticks, frozen, used as breaded sticks, canned, bottled, and smoked.

The milkfish fry shortage

The article presents the Philippines, Department of Agriculture Project Sabalo which aims to address the milkfish fry shortage of the country. The project also aims to evaluate existing hatcheries, assess broodstock conditions, and increase the number of broodstock. Fry requirement for milkfish ponds is also presented.

Strategies for sustainable use of living aquatic resources

Recommendations of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (Philippines) to conserve biodiversity, maintain the integrity of the environment, protect fishery stocks, involve fishing communities in the management, and use environment-friendly technologies for enhancing fishery production.
