ENGLISH: The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission operates under the authority and direction of a convention originally entered into by Costa Rica and the United States. The convention, which came into force in 1950, is open to adherence by other governments whose nationals fish for tropical tunas in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Under this provision Panama adhered in 1953, Ecuador in 1961, Mexico in 1964, Canada in 1968, Japan in 1970, and France and Nicaragua in 1973. Ecuador withdrew from the Commission in 1968, Mexico in 1978, Costa Rica in 1979, and Canada in 1984. The Commission held its 45th meeting in La Jolla, California, on March 8-10, 1988. Cast net fishing is a relatively important socio-economíc activity in Aby lagoon. About 516 fishermen practice this activity for an annual total production estimated at 336 millions CFA, which represents 54,000 CFA per month. The catches are essentially composed of Cichlidae (88,7 %) and Mugilidae (2,8 %). The annual production represents 15 % of that of other types of gears used (beach seines, syndicat seines and gill nets).

The exploitation of fish stocks in Aby lagoon was marked by an increase of total fishing effort, yields and therefore by the increase of total production. Fishing effort evolution was due to: the increasing of the number of beach seines which has increased from 26 in 1987 to 32 in 1988, the reappearance of syndicat seines and finally the importance of fishing teams activity.

Samples of albacore tunny-fish (Thunnus albacares) caught from East Tropical Atlantic areas have been analysed in white and red muscles in order to determine the concentration of mercury. The results show that there are no significant differences between the mercury concentrations in the white and in the red muscles, and that a significant correlation exists between the mercury concentrations in the two types of muscles.

This report comprises a mean weekly summary of the raw data of the fish population of the Stocks Reservoir major tributaries in conjunction with completed maps, diagrams, tables and figures. These cover the Stocks tributary stream survey, the Fishery and fish plate impingement. This paper does not constitute a final report which the author intends to submit as a Ph.D. thesis. However, it does present much of the data and analysis completed in its final draft, which may be of immediate use and benefit to the Authority.
