Individuals of the western stock of Baltic cod were kept at captivity with different temperatures and salinities until natural spawning. Spawning activities up to 16 weeks were observed between February and June. This time interval agrees weIl with the spawning season of the wild cod stock. Also as in in-situ observations larger individuals started earlier with the spawning process than smaller ones and had significantly larger periods of spawning. Larger cods produced more batches and more eggs than smaller cods within this time interval. The comparison between the actual and potential absolut fecundity showed large differences. Only apart of the potential absolut fecundity, estimated in the phase of prespawning development of ovaries, was developed until their release. These analyses showed that larger cod were able to develop a larger part of the eggs within the ovaries up to the complete development. This result should be considered in the future during estimations of the population fecundity of the western Baltic spawning stock.

An appraisal of the current status of the fisheries of Eleiyele Reservoir by its fisheries cooperatives

In a study undertaken to evaluate the status of the fisheries of Eleiyele Reservoir (Nigeria) between 1995 and 1997, thermal stratification was observed to breakdown between December and March. Of the physico-chemical variables, transparency was positively correlated (p<0.05) with primary productivity, conductivity and dissolved oxygen concentration. Primary productivity ranged between 0.38mgC/m super(2)/d and 3.OmgC/ m super(2)/d, being lowest in April. BOD values ranged between 1.3mg-2.2mgO/l indicative of clean unpolluted water. Nine fish species belonging to the families Cichlidae, Centropomidae and Mochokidae were identified. Cichlids were the most abundant with Hemichromis species being predominant. Fishing was only carried out in the reservoir during the dry season months of November to April. Fish landing data for the reservoir, obtained from the Fisheries Division of the Ministry of Agriculture and Natural resources, Oyo State, in conjunction with comparative data from the Cooperative fishermen was low. It demonstrated a decreasing trend from January to April and during the period between 1985 and 1996, when compared with data collected in 1985 and 1986 from a previous similar study. Reasons for the low fish yield from the reservoir are discussed and compared with other Nigerian reservoirs

Assessments on stocks of cod, haddock, saithe, redfish and Greenland halibut were carried out by the "Arctic Fisheries Working Group" in August 1995. The most important results are given in this report.

Makrelen- und Holzmakrelenfänge stimmen zuversichtlich

In order to determine the abundance of incoming year classes of both mackerel and horse mackerel a couple of research vessels in the frame of ICES investigats waters west of the British Isles, the Gulf of Biscay and areas west of the Iberian Peninsula in the first half of each third year. In 1995, Germany took place in these investigations with R.V. "Walther Herwig III" from March 23 to April 18. A total of 100 plankton stations were made using a Gulf - III - Sampier between Fastnet Rock and the Gironde estuary. In addition, 87 fishing stations were occupied by a GOV net. Though fish indications were not fished on purpose large amounts of especially horse mackerel and mackerel were gained in the half hour tows. Besides, boarfish (Capros aper L.), blue whiting, and sprat were found in considerable quantities and numbers in some areas. The hydrographc situation was as expected: The development of a surfaee thermocline created by radiation indieates the collapse of the vertically homogeneous situation of the winter period.

Über die Trogmuschel und deren Nutzung in der Deutschen Bucht

Obwohl seit längerem bekannt ist, dass diese wohlschmeckende Muschel in der Nordsee vorkommt, gab es dort bis vor wenigen Jahren keine Trogmuschelfischerei. Das änderte sich erst, als es niederländischen Muschelverarbeitungsfirmen gelungen war, aus Trogmuscheln ein exportfähiges Produkt herzustellen. Dementsprechend beantragte auch ein niederländischer Muschelfischerbetrieb als Erster eine erlaubnis zum Fischen von Trogmuscheln in deutschen Gewässern außerhalb von 3 Seemeilen. Inzwischen erhielten auch vier weitere Muschelkutter die Fangerlaubnis. Allerdings wird wegen der begrenzten Absatzmöglichkeiten nur zeitweilig gefischt. Deshalb sind bisher auch noch keine Anzeichen einer Überfischung zu sehen.

Models in the implementation of the Water Framework Directive - benchmarking as part of the modelling proccess

The Water Framework Directive (WFD; European Commission 2000) is a framework for European environmental legislation that aims at improving water quality by using an integrated approach to implement the necessary societal and technical measures. Assessments to guide, support, monitor and evaluate policies, such as the WFD, require scientific approaches which integrate biophysical and human aspects of ecological systems and their interactions, as outlined by the International Council for Science (2002). These assessments need to be based on sound scientific principles and address the environmental problems in a holistic way. End-users need help to select the most appropriate methods and models. Advice on the selection and use of a wide range of water quality models has been developed within the project Benchmark Models for the Water Framework Directive (BMW). In this article, the authors summarise the role of benchmarking in the modelling process and explain how such an archive of validated models can be used to support the implementation of the WFD.

Profile soundings in lakes of the younger morainal area of Sleswick-Holstein with a sediment-echo-sounder of 30 kHz [Translation from: Wass.Boden 26, 135-138, 1974]

To be able to carry out physical, chemical and biological investigations on a lake, one needs a thorough knowledge of the volume of water and the shape of the lake basin. Little is known about the about the morphology of the lakes in Schleswig-Holstein and its ecological consequences. For this research a 30 KHz echo sounder with sediment transceiver was used to carry out profile determinations (echo soundings). This apparatus continuously records on paper the different reflexions and absorptions of the sediment and water body in the corresponding depth. By this, acoustically noticeable layers and different densities in the sediment and 'scattering layers' in the water body due to physical, chemical and biological reasons (e.g. plans and single fish) are made visible. Report of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission for the year 1974

ENGLISH: The Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission operates under the authority and direction of a convention originally entered into by the Republic of Costa Rica and the United States of America. The convention, which came into force in 1950, is open to adherence by other governments whose nationals fish for tropical tunas in the eastern Pacific Ocean. Under this provision the Republic of Panama adhered in 1953, the Republic of Ecuador in 1961, the United Mexican States in 1964, Canada in 1968 and Japan in 1970. In 1967, Ecuador gave notice of her intent to withdraw from the Commission, and her withdrawal became effective on August 21,1968. SPANISH: La Comisión Interamericana del Atún Tropical está bajo la autoridad y dirección de una convención la cual fue originalmente formada por la República de Costa Rica y los Estados Unidos de América. La Convención, vigente desde 1950, está abierta a la afiliación de otros gobiernos cuyos nacionales pesquen atún en el Pacífico oriental tropical. Bajo esta medida la República de Panamá se afilió en 1953, la República del Ecuador en 1961, los Estados Unidos Mexicanos en 1964, Canadá en 1968 y el Japón en 1970.
