Length-based methods (LBMs) were used to study the growth of Trisopterus minutus capelanus in the Strait of Sicily (Messina Strait). A total of 16,304 'merluzzetto' or poor cod collected by experimental trawling off the southern coast of Sicily during spring, summer, autumn 1986 and winter 1987 were measured in order to estimate the length structure of the population. Length-frequency distribution were analyzed and normal components were discriminated. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were derived from the mean length of the normal components. The growth parameters obtained by weighted non-linear regression were: K=0.462 (yr super(1)), L sub( infinity )=222.3 (TL,mm) and t sub(o)=-0.679 yr. The resulting growth performance index ( Phi ') was 4.36, a value slightly lower than those derived for Western Mediterranean (mean Phi '=4.45) and Adriatic ( Phi '=4.58) populations and slightly higher than that derived for Hellenic waters ( Phi '=4.27). On the basis of the von Bertalanffy parameters estimated, an array of age-specific instantaneous natural mortality rate (M sub(t)=0.5-1.1) and an average value of total natural mortality rate (Z=2.1 yr super(1)) were estimated and used in the Thompson and Bell yield per recruit (Y/R) analysis in order to evaluate the status of the fishery and forecast the effects of changes in the fishing pattern. Results indicate that this resource is overexploited and that Y/R could be increased by postponing the age at first capture from 0.5 to 1.0 yr. Even a slight reduction in fishing mortality could improve the performance of the fishery. At the present level of exploitation, and assuming a constant recruitment, the spawning stock biomass per recruit (SPR) is well below the conservative threshold of 30% of the pristine or unexploited SPR.

ENGLISH: One primary duty of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission is to estimate the maximum sustainable catches of yellowfin tuna (Neothunnus macropterus) and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), and to investigate and recommend proposals to maintain the stocks at levels which will permit these catches to be obtained. To do this, there is required some means of predicting yields relative to fishing intensity. . . The age composition of catch, and growth rate of yellowfin tuna for recent years have now been estimated (Hennemuth, 1961). In this paper, relative abundance at age of yellowfin tuna shall be estimated -and used, in turn, to estimate total mortality rate. Yield-per-recruit calculations, based on Beverton and Holt's (1957) simple equation, will be presented to compare present utilization with theoretical maxima under varying levels of fishing mortality and different ages at first capture.

Four groups of fin clipped brown trout (Salmo trutta) fingerlings were planted in Hot Creek over a six year period. Survival and growth were estimated by fall and/or spring mark-and-recapture surveys. Yield to the angler for two of the tour groups stocked was estimated by stratified random creel surveys. Fingerling survival from the midsummer stocking period to fall averaged 51 %. Overwinter survival from young-of-the-year to yearling fish averaged 49%. Angler harvest of two groups of fingerlings stocked at densities of 16,082 fish/mile averaged 1,704 trout/mile (10.6%) and 194 lbs/acre. Abundant cover and microhabitat suitable tor young trout, ice-free winters, and rapid growth were factors viewed as contributing to high yields. Results do not suggest a change is needed in the general policy of not stocking brown trout fingerlings in California streams. Results do show that fingerlings stocked in Hot Creek, and presumably other productive streams with abundant cover, can effectively fill a void created by limited recruitment. ENGLISH: The rapid growth of the Eastern Pacific fishery for yellowfin and skipjack tuna since the end of World War II has given rise to questions concerning the rational utilization of these resources. As part of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission's program of research designed to investigate these problems, a study was undertaken to determine from the historical records of the fishery the effects of fishing upon the stocks of yellowfin and skipjack tuna of the Eastern Pacific region and to evaluate the present condition of these stocks with respect to the maximum equilibrium yield. The growth responses and yield of Heterotis niloticus on artificial diets of varying protein levels were studied in a bid to assess the implication of feeding Heterotis in intensive fish production venture for a rearing period of 84 days. One hundred and twenty juvenile H.niloticus were fed for 12 weeks on 28%, 31%, 34% and 37% dietary crude protein levels. The fish were reared in 4 concrete tanks stocked at the rate of 10 fish per M super(2) 100,00/hectare). Consequently, the weight gain, food conversion ratio, serum protein and albumin-globulin ratio were determined to assess the growth and state of health of the fish. The yield was appraised through economic considerations of cost of production of fish and diets (feed). The varying crude protein levels significantly influenced mean weight gain, percentage weight gain and food conversion ratio however, the 37% crude protein in diet produced the best growth. The serum protein was highest in fish raised on 31% crude protein diet while the highest value was recorded for albumin-globulin ratio on diet containing 34% crude protein. The yield from treatments 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 114.38 of/84 days 571.9kg/g hect);146.79g/84 days 733.95kg/hect), respectively. However, treatment 3 recorded the highest value for profit index

The success of induced spawning for the production of fish seed depends on many factors which affect hatchery conditions. This paper discusses the results of an investigation on the effects of six different levels of salinity on the fertilization and hatching of Heterobranchus bidorsalis eggs. The results indicate that spermatozoa of H. bidorsalis can survive under a wide range of saline concentrations, with survival increasing with an increase in salinity from 0 to 0.4% and then decreasing as the level of salinity increases. Survival was optimum of 0.4% saline concentration.

A study on mixed culture of mirror carp (Cyprinus carpio Lin.), tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus Lin.), silver carp (Hypophthalmicthys molitrix Val.) and Thai sharpunti (Puntius gonionotus Bleeker) in the ratio of 1:2:2:5 was conducted in 12 seasonal mini ponds (30 m² each) for 105 days. There were six treatments each with two replicates and each pond was stocked with a total of 100 fishes. Rice bran and mustard oil cake were used as supplemental feed either in combination or alone in presence or absence of fertilizer. Fertilizers were used in the form of organic, inorganic or both. The best growth performance of mirror carp, tilapia and Thai sharpunti was obtained in treatment III which received both fertilizer (organic+inorganic) and rice bran while the highest growth of silver carp was obtained in treatment VI receiving only inorganic fertilizer. However, the overall best production (2450 Kg/ha) and economic return for the culture period was obtained in treatment VI followed by treatment III. The results are discussed in the light of water quality parameters.

Analysis of the length-frequency data on Copadichromis likomae (Cichlidae) from Lake Niassa, Mozambique, suggests an asymptotic length of SL∞=14 cm associated with a K value of 0.93 yearˉ¹. Total and natural mortalities were estimated as 3.2 yearˉ¹ and 1.9 yearˉ¹, respectively. Yield-per-recruit analysis suggests that E=0.36 in this fishery.

(GIFT) (Oreochromis niloticus) and Silver barb (Barbodes gonionotus) in rice fields and their
effects on the yield of rice was carried out in nine experimental rice plots. Three
treatments viz., treatment-1 with 0. niloticus (T1), treatment-2 with B. gonionotus (T2) and
treatment- 3 was kept as control (T3, without fish) were used in this study. Fertilizers
such as, Urea (178 kg ha-1), T.S.P (125 kg ha-1) and M.P. (67 kg ha-1) were applied in each
treatment. The fishes were stocked @ 6250 ha·1 and the experiment was continued for a
period of 107 days.
The values of water quality parameters such as, water temperature, dissolved oxygen,
pH and chlorophyll-a were found within suitable level. Between the two species, higher
specific growth rate was recorded in 0. niloticus than that of B. gonionotus. But B.
gonionotus showed much higher survival (72%) than that of 0. niloticus (35%). Similar to
survival, higher production (244 kg ha-1) and income (Tk. 6399 ha-1) were recorded in B.
gonionotus than those of 0. niloticus (142.8 kg ha'1 and Tk. 2137 ha-1). Significant
differences (p

Prawn meat treated with Streptococcus pyogenes B-49-2 culture and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC-12598 culture were frozen in conventional plate freezer at -40°C and by spray type liquid nitrogen freezer. The frozen products were stored at -18°C. Streptococcus pyogenes B-49-2 showed low sensitivity to cold injury during freezing and frozen storage. Staphylococcus aureus ATCC-12598 survived during the entire storage period of 240 days. Total bacterial count of untreated prawn meat was found to be always lesser in liquid nitrogen frozen products than that in plate frozen products.

The study was conducted at the Central Experimental Station, Philippine Rice Research Institute, Maligaya, Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija, Philippines during the wet season to determine the suitable stocking density(s) for better growth and yield of fish under rice-fish production systems. Recovery rate of GIFT tilapia in different stocking densities ranged from 75.74 to 83.47%. Among different treatments, rice +5,000 fingerlings/ha and rice +10,000 fingerlings/ha resulted in the highest recovery rate of 83.33% and 83.47%, respectively. The lowest recovery rate of 75.75% was obtained from rice +20,000 fingerlings/ha, but similar to that was obtained (78.56%) from rice +15,000 fingerlings/ha. Significantly higher rate of gain in body weight and that of specific growth rate were recorded in the treatment from rice +5,000 fingerlings/ha, while other treatments resulted in similar absolute and specific growth rate. Fish yield increased significantly with relatively higher stocking densities, but higher densities produced maximum number of smaller fishes and also lower recovery rate.
