Recently, a possible clustering of a subset of observed ultra-high energy cosmic rays above ≃40 EeV (4 × 1019 eV) in pairs near the supergalactic plane was reported. We show that a confirmation of this effect would provide information on the origin and nature of these events and, in case of charged primaries, imply interesting constraints on the extragalactic magnetic field. Possible implications for the most common models of ultra-high energy cosmic ray production in the literature are discussed.

Diphosphoinositol pentakisphosphate (PP-IP5) and bis(diphospho)inositol tetrakisphosphate (bis-PP-IP4) are recently identified inositol phosphates that possess pyrophosphate bonds. We have purified an inositol hexakisphosphate (IP6) kinase from rat brain supernatants. The pure protein, a monomer of 54 kDa, displays high affinity (Km = 0.7 microM) and selectivity for inositol hexakisphosphate as substrate. It can be dissociated from bis(diphospho)inositol tetrakisphosphate synthetic activity. The purified enzyme transfers a phosphate from PP-IP5 to ADP to form ATP. This ATP synthase activity indicates the high phosphate group transfer potential of PP-IP5 and may represent a physiological role for PP-IP5.

There are several classes of homogeneous Fermi systems that are characterized by the topology of the energy spectrum of fermionic quasiparticles: (i) gapless systems with a Fermi surface, (ii) systems with a gap in their spectrum, (iii) gapless systems with topologically stable point nodes (Fermi points), and (iv) gapless systems with topologically unstable lines of nodes (Fermi lines). Superfluid 3He-A and electroweak vacuum belong to the universality class 3. The fermionic quasiparticles (particles) in this class are chiral: they are left-handed or right-handed. The collective bosonic modes of systems of class 3 are the effective gauge and gravitational fields. The great advantage of superfluid 3He-A is that we can perform experiments by using this condensed matter and thereby simulate many phenomena in high energy physics, including axial anomaly, baryoproduction, and magnetogenesis. 3He-A textures induce a nontrivial effective metrics of the space, where the free quasiparticles move along geodesics. With 3He-A one can simulate event horizons, Hawking radiation, rotating vacuum, etc. High-temperature superconductors are believed to belong to class 4. They have gapless fermionic quasiparticles with a “relativistic” spectrum close to gap nodes, which allows application of ideas developed for superfluid 3He-A.

The energetics of a fusion pathway is considered, starting from the contact site where two apposed membranes each locally protrude (as “nipples”) toward each other. The equilibrium distance between the tips of the two nipples is determined by a balance of physical forces: repulsion caused by hydration and attraction generated by fusion proteins. The energy to create the initial stalk, caused by bending of cis monolayer leaflets, is much less when the stalk forms between nipples rather than parallel flat membranes. The stalk cannot, however, expand by bending deformations alone, because this would necessitate the creation of a hydrophobic void of prohibitively high energy. But small movements of the lipids out of the plane of their monolayers allow transformation of the stalk into a modified stalk. This intermediate, not previously considered, is a low-energy structure that can reconfigure into a fusion pore via an additional intermediate, the prepore. The lipids of this latter structure are oriented as in a fusion pore, but the bilayer is locally compressed. All membrane rearrangements occur in a discrete local region without creation of an extended hemifusion diaphragm. Importantly, all steps of the proposed pathway are energetically feasible.

DNA-strand exchange promoted by Escherichia coli RecA protein normally requires the presence of ATP and is accompanied by ATP hydrolysis, thereby implying a need for ATP hydrolysis. Previously, ATP hydrolysis was shown not to be required; here we demonstrate furthermore that a nucleoside triphosphate cofactor is not required for DNA-strand exchange. A gratuitous allosteric effector consisting of the noncovalent complex of ADP and aluminum fluoride, ADP.AIF4-, can both induce the high-affinity DNA-binding state of RecA protein and support the homologous pairing and exchange of up to 800-900 bp of DNA. These results demonstrate that induction of the functionally active, high-affinity DNA-binding state of RecA protein is needed for RecA protein-promoted DNA-strand exchange and that there is no requirement for a high-energy nucleotide cofactor for the exchange of DNA strands. Consequently, the free energy needed to activate the DNA substrates for DNA-strand exchange is not derived from ATP hydrolysis. Instead, the needed free energy is derived from ligand binding and is transduced to the DNA via the associated ligand-induced structural transitions of the RecA protein-DNA complex; ATP hydrolysis simply destroys the effector ligand. This concept has general applicability to the mechanism of energy transduction by proteins.
