Application of electric fields tangent to the plane of a confined patch of fluid bilayer membrane can create lateral concentration gradients of the lipids. A thermodynamic model of this steady-state behavior is developed for binary systems and tested with experiments in supported lipid bilayers. The model uses Flory’s approximation for the entropy of mixing and allows for effects arising when the components have different molecular areas. In the special case of equal area molecules the concentration gradient reduces to a Fermi–Dirac distribution. The theory is extended to include effects from charged molecules in the membrane. Calculations show that surface charge on the supporting substrate substantially screens electrostatic interactions within the membrane. It also is shown that concentration profiles can be affected by other intermolecular interactions such as clustering. Qualitative agreement with this prediction is provided by comparing phosphatidylserine- and cardiolipin-containing membranes.

The distribution of S to sulfate, glucosinolates, glutathione, and the insoluble fraction within oilseed rape (Brassica napus L.) leaves of different ages was investigated during vegetative growth. The concentrations of glutathione and glucosinolates increased from the oldest to the youngest leaves, whereas the opposite was observed for SO42−. The concentration of insoluble S was similar among all of the leaves. At sufficient S supply and in the youngest leaves, 2% of total S was allocated to glutathione, 6% to glucosinolates, 50% to the insoluble fraction, and the remainder accumulated as SO42−. In the middle and oldest leaves, 70% to 90% of total S accumulated as SO42−, whereas glutathione and glucosinolates together accounted for less than 1% of S. When the S supply was withdrawn (minus S), the concentrations of all S-containing compounds, particularly SO42−, decreased in the youngest and middle leaves. Neither glucosinolates nor glutathione were major sources of S during S deficiency. Plants grown on nutrient solution containing minus S and low N were less deficient than plants grown on solution containing minus S and high N. The effect of N was explained by differences in growth rate. The different responses of leaves of different ages to S deficiency have to be taken into account for the development of field diagnostic tests to determine whether plants are S deficient.

The objective of this study was to examine the influence of sensory experience on the synaptic circuitry of the cortex. For this purpose, the quantitative distribution of the overall and of the gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) population of synaptic contacts was investigated in each layer of the somatosensory barrel field cortex of rats which were sensory deprived from birth by continuously removing rows of whiskers. Whereas there were no statistically significant changes in the quantitative distribution of the overall synaptic population, the number and proportion of GABA-immunopositive synaptic contacts were profoundly altered in layer IV of the somatosensory cortex of sensory-deprived animals. These changes were attributable to a specific loss of as many as two-thirds of the GABA contacts targeting dendritic spines. Thus, synaptic contacts made by GABA terminals in cortical layer IV and, in particular, those targeting dendritic spines represent a structural substrate of experience-dependent plasticity. Furthermore, since in this model of cortical plasticity the neuronal receptive-field properties are known to be affected, we propose that the inhibitory control of dendritic spines is essential for the elaboration of these functional properties.

We analyzed the geographic distribution of the Ixodes ricinus-like ticks in eastern North America by comparing the mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequences of specimens sampled directly from the field during the 1990s. Two distinct lineages are evident. The southern clade includes ticks from the southeastern and middle-eastern regions of the United States. The range of the northern clade, which appears to have been restricted to the northeastern region until the mid-1900s, now extends throughout the northeastern and middle-eastern regions. These phyletic units correspond to northern and southern taxa that have previously been assigned specific status as Ixodes dammini and Ixodes scapularis, respectively. The expanding range of I. dammini appears to drive the present outbreaks of zoonotic disease in eastern North America that include Lyme disease and human babesiosis.
