Under-deck cable-stayed bridges are very effective structural systems for which the strong contribution of the stay cables under live loading allows for the design of very slender decks for persistent and transient loading scenarios. Their behaviour when subjected to seismic excitation is investigated herein and a set of design criteria are presented that relate to the type and arrangement of bearings, the number and configuration of struts, and the transverse distribution of stay cables. The nonlinear behaviour of these bridges when subject to both near-field and far-field accelerograms has been thoroughly investigated through the use of incremental dynamic analyses. An intensity measure that reflects the pertinent contributions to response when several vibration modes are activated was proposed and is shown to be effective for the analysis of this structural type. The under-deck cable-stay system contributes in a very positive manner to reducing the response when the bridges are subject to very strong seismic excitation. For such scenarios, the reduction in the stiffness of the deck because of crack formation, when prestressed concrete decks are used, mobilises the cable system and enhances the overall performance of the system. Sets of natural accelerograms that are compliant with the prescriptions of Eurocode 8 were also applied to propose a set of design criteria for this bridge type in areas prone to earthquakes. Rotator cuff tears of the shoulder are a common cause of pain and disability. Although surgery is frequently beneficial, re-tearing of the tendons is likely to re-occur. In many cases even if the reparation is successful it will still generate discomfort, problems with mobility, as well as a sharp pain. This project is funded in the cooperation with the Hospital Clinico San Carlos de Madrid. The purpose of this work is to analyze the effect of the surgical repair and the application of different therapies, including mesenchymal stem cell therapy on the biomechanical properties (strength and stiffness) of the repaired tendon. An animal model of rotator cuff tendon reparations has been developed on laboratory rats.To obtain the mechanical response of the healthy and repaired tendons, it was necessary to develop an experimental set up to reproduce the in-vivo working conditions of the tendons (37 ºC, immersed in physiological serum), and especially the load transfer. The biomechanical properties (maximum load and stiffness) have been measured in healthy and repaired tendons. A total of 70 rats are used in this particular study. It has been found that the repaired tendon is stronger than the original on. However, the repaired tendons demonstrate less flexibility than the healthy (original) ones prior to the damage

Cable-stayed bridges represent nowadays key points in transport networks and their seismic behavior needs to be fully understood, even beyond the elastic range of materials. Both nonlinear dynamic (NL-RHA) and static (pushover) procedures are currently available to face this challenge, each with intrinsic advantages and disadvantages, and their applicability in the study of the nonlinear seismic behavior of cable-stayed bridges is discussed here. The seismic response of a large number of finite element models with different span lengths, tower shapes and class of foundation soil is obtained with different procedures and compared. Several features of the original Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA) are modified in light of cable-stayed bridge characteristics, furthermore, an extension of MPA and a new coupled pushover analysis (CNSP) are suggested to estimate the complex inelastic response of such outstanding structures subjected to multi-axial strong ground motions.

En el presente proyecto se realiza un estudio para la construcción de una cabecera de televisión por cable. Se trata de un proyecto puramente teórico en el que se especifican cada una de las partes que forman una cabecera de televisión y cómo funciona cada una de ellas. En un principio, se sitúa la cabecera de televisión dentro de una plataforma general de transmisión, para indicar sus funciones. Posteriormente, se analizan las distintas tecnologías que implementan esta transmisión y los estándares DVB que las rigen, como son DVB-C y DVB-C2 para las transmisiones por cable propiamente dichas y DVB-IPTV para las transmisiones por IP, para elegir cuál de las opciones es la más acertada y adaptar la cabecera de televisión a la misma. En cuanto al desarrollo teórico de la cabecera, se estudia el proceso que sigue la señal dentro de la misma, desde la recepción de los canales hasta el envío de los mismos hacia los hogares de los distintos usuarios, pasando previamente por las etapas de codificación y multiplexación. Además, se especifican los equipos necesarios para el correcto funcionamiento de cada una de las etapas. En la recepción, se reciben los canales por cada uno de los medios posibles (satélite, cable, TDT y estudio), que son demodulados y decodificados por el receptor. A continuación, son codificados (en este proyecto en MPEG-2 o H.264) para posteriormente ser multiplexados. En la etapa de multiplexación, se forma una trama Transport Stream por cada canal, compuesta por su flujo de video, audio y datos. Estos datos se trata de una serie de tablas (SI y PSI) que guían al set-topbox del usuario en la decodificación de los programas (tablas PSI) y que proporcionan información de cada uno de los mismos y del sistema (tablas SI). Con estas últimas el decodificador forma la EPG. Posteriormente, se realiza una segunda multiplexación, de forma que se incluyen múltiples programas en una sola trama Transport Stream (MPTS). Estos MPTS son los flujos que les son enviados a cada uno de los usuarios. El mecanismo de transmisión es de dos tipos en función del contenido y los destinatarios: multicast o unicast. Por último, se especifica el funcionamiento básico de un sistema de acceso condicional, así como su estructura, el cual es imprescindible en todas las cabeceras para asegurar que cada usuario solo visualiza los contenidos contratados. In this project, a study is realized for the cable television head-end construction . It is a theoretical project in which there are specified each of the parts that form a television headend and how their works each of them. At first, the television head-end places inside a general platform of transmission, to indicate its functions. Later, the different technologies that implement this transmission and the standards DVB that govern them are analyzed, since the standards that govern the cable transmissions (DVB-C and DVB-C2) to the standard that govern the IP transmissions (DVB-IPTV), to choose which of the options is the most guessed right and to adapt the television head-end to the same one. The theoretical development of the head-end, there is studied the process that follows the sign inside the same one, from the receipt of the channels up to the sending of the same ones towards the homes of the different users, happening before for the stages of codification and multiplexación. In addition, there are specified the equipments necessary for the correct functioning of each one of the stages. In the reception, the channels are receiving for each of the possible systems(satellite, cable, TDT and study), and they are demodulated and decoded by the receiver. Later, they are codified (in this project in MPEG-2 or H.264). The next stage is the stage of multiplexing. In the multiplexing stage, the channels are packetized in Transport Stream, composed by his video flow, audio and information. The information are composed by many tables(SI and PSI). The PSI tables guide the set-top-box of the user in the programs decoding and the SI tables provide information about the programs and system. With the information mentioned the decoder forms the EPG. Later, a second multiplexación is realized, so that there includes multiple programs in an alone Transport Stream (MPTS). These MPTS are the flows that are sent to each of the users. Two types of transmission are possible: unicast (VoD channels) and multicast (live channels). Finally, the basic functioning of a conditional access system is specified and his structure too, which is indispensable in all the head-end to assure that every users visualizes the contracted contents only.

Strong motion records obtained in instrumented short-span bridges show the importance of the abutments in the dynamic response of the structure. Existing models study the pier foundation influence but not the abutment performance. This work proposes two and three dimensional boundary element models in the frequency domain and studies the dimensionless dynamic stiffness of standard bridge abutments.

A boundary element approach for time harmonic axisymmetric problems using the complete space point load fundamental solution is presented. The fundamental solution is integrated numerically along the azimuthal co-ordinate of each axisymmetric element. To increase the accuracy of the numerical integration a simple co-ordinate transformation is proposed. The approach is applied to the computation of the dynamic stiffness functions of rigid circular foundations on layered viscoelastic soils. Three different sites are considered: a uniform half-space, a soil layer on a half-space, and a soil consisting of four horizontal layers and a compliant half-space. The numerical results obtained by the proposed approach for surface circular foundations are very close to corresponding published results obtained by different procedures.

The writer would like to point out the existence of a very remarkable Spanish cable-stayed bridge built in 1925, wich is thus older than the first one recorded by the authors (and probably the pioneer in concrete-deck type). The Tempul Aqueduct was designed by the famous Professor Educardo Torroja. The deck is a concrete box girder sustained by two planes of 3 mm diam 37-wire double cables working at 27 kg/mm2.

It is common to find structures that need to be reinforced due to deterioration or because the function of the building changes. The economic cost involved in these forms of interventions is considerable. Therefore, it is interesting to progress in the existing strengthening techniques and the study of new reinforcement systems. This paper analyses the behaviour of timber beams reinforced with carbon and basalt fiber composite materials. The main objective of this study is to test the stiffness increase produced by the carbon and basalt FRP on reinforced beams. The results show the stiffness increase produced by the different types of reinforcement.

El presente proyecto tiene la finalidad de diseñar una herramienta mediante métodos numéricos implementados en Matlab que permita estudiar los fenómenos térmicos que tiene lugar en los cables subterráneos de potencia cuando se encuentran en carga. Y a partir de las soluciones obtenidas determinar la capacidad máxima del transporte del cable para un emplazamiento determinado.

La industria de la energía eólica marina ha crecido de forma significativa durante los últimos 15 años, y se espera que siga creciendo durante los siguientes. La construcción de torres en aguas cada vez más profundas y el aumento en potencia y tamaño de las turbinas han creado la necesidad de diseñar estructuras de soporte cada vez más fiables y optimizadas, lo que requiere un profundo conocimiento de su comportamiento. Este trabajo se centra en la respuesta dinámica de una turbina marina con cimentación tipo monopilote y sobre la que actúa la fuerza del viento. Se han realizado cálculos con distintas propiedades del suelo para cubrir un rango de rigideces que va desde una arena muy suelta a una muy densa. De este modo se ha analizado la influencia que tiene la rigidez del suelo en el comportamiento de la estructura. Se han llevado a cabo análisis estáticos y dinámicos en un modelo de elementos finitos implementado en Abaqus. El desplazamiento en la cabeza de la torre y la tensión en su base se han obtenido en función de la rigidez del suelo, y con ellos se ha calculado la amplificación dinámica producida cuando la frecuencia natural del sistema suelo‐cimentación torre se aproxima a la frecuencia de la carga. Dos diferentes enfoques a la hora de modelizar el suelo se han comparado: uno utilizando elementos continuos y otro utilizando muelles elásticos no lineales. Por último, un análisis de fiabilidad se ha llevado a cabo con un modelo analítico para calcular la probabilidad de resonancia del sistema, en el que se han considerado las propiedades de rigidez del suelo como variables aleatorias. Offshore wind energy industry has experienced a significant growth over the past 15 years, and it is expected to continue its growth in the coming years. The expansion to increasingly deep waters and the rise in power and size of the turbines have led to a need for more reliable and optimized support designs, which requires an extensive knowledge of the behaviour of these structures. This work focuses on the dynamic response of an offshore wind turbine founded on a monopile and subjected to wind loading. Different soil properties have been considered in order to cover the range of stiffness from a very loose to a very dense sand. In this way, the influence of stiffness on the structure behaviour has been assessed. Static and dynamic analyses have been carried out by means of a finite element model implemented in Abaqus. Head displacement and stress at the tower base have been obtained as functions of soil stiffness, and they have been used to calculate the dynamic amplification that is produced when the natural frequency of the system soil‐foundation‐tower approaches the load frequency. Two different approaches of soil modelling have been compared: soil modelled as a continuum and soil simulated with non linear elastic springs. Finally, a reliability analysis to assess the probability of resonance has been performed with an analytical model, in which soil stiffness properties are considered as stochastic variables.

Arch bridge structural solution has been known for centuries, in fact the simple nature of arch that require low tension and shear strength was an advantage as the simple materials like stone and brick were the only option back in ancient centuries. By the pass of time especially after industrial revolution, the new materials were adopted in construction of arch bridges to reach longer spans. Nowadays one long span arch bridge is made of steel, concrete or combination of these two as "CFST", as the result of using these high strength materials, very long spans can be achieved. The current record for longest arch belongs to Chaotianmen bridge over Yangtze river in China with 552 meters span made of steel and the longest reinforced concrete type is Wanxian bridge which also cross the Yangtze river through a 420 meters span. Today the designer is no longer limited by span length as long as arch bridge is the most applicable solution among other approaches, i.e. cable stayed and suspended bridges are more reasonable if very long span is desired. Like any super structure, the economical and architectural aspects in construction of a bridge is extremely important, in other words, as a narrower bridge has better appearance, it also require smaller volume of material which make the design more economical. Design of such bridge, beside the high strength materials, requires precise structural analysis approaches capable of integrating the combination of material behaviour and complex geometry of structure and various types of loads which may be applied to bridge during its service life. Depend on the design strategy, analysis may only evaluates the linear elastic behaviour of structure or consider the nonlinear properties as well. Although most of structures in the past were designed to act in their elastic range, the rapid increase in computational capacity allow us to consider different sources of nonlinearities in order to achieve a more realistic evaluations where the dynamic behaviour of bridge is important especially in seismic zones where large movements may occur or structure experience P - _ effect during the earthquake. The above mentioned type of analysis is computationally expensive and very time consuming. In recent years, several methods were proposed in order to resolve this problem. Discussion of recent developments on these methods and their application on long span concrete arch bridges is the main goal of this research. Accordingly available long span concrete arch bridges have been studied to gather the critical information about their geometrical aspects and properties of their materials. Based on concluded information, several concrete arch bridges were designed for further studies. The main span of these bridges range from 100 to 400 meters. The Structural analysis methods implemented in in this study are as following: Elastic Analysis: Direct Response History Analysis (DRHA): This method solves the direct equation of motion over time history of applied acceleration or imposed load in linear elastic range. Modal Response History Analysis (MRHA): Similar to DRHA, this method is also based on time history, but the equation of motion is simplified to single degree of freedom system and calculates the response of each mode independently. Performing this analysis require less time than DRHA. Modal Response Spectrum Analysis (MRSA): As it is obvious from its name, this method calculates the peak response of structure for each mode and combine them using modal combination rules based on the introduced spectra of ground motion. This method is expected to be fastest among Elastic analysis. Inelastic Analysis: Nonlinear Response History Analysis (NL-RHA): The most accurate strategy to address significant nonlinearities in structural dynamics is undoubtedly the nonlinear response history analysis which is similar to DRHA but extended to inelastic range by updating the stiffness matrix for every iteration. This onerous task, clearly increase the computational cost especially for unsymmetrical buildings that requires to be analyzed in a full 3D model for taking the torsional effects in to consideration. Modal Pushover Analysis (MPA): The Modal Pushover Analysis is basically the MRHA but extended to inelastic stage. After all, the MRHA cannot solve the system of dynamics because the resisting force fs(u; u_ ) is unknown for inelastic stage. The solution of MPA for this obstacle is using the previously recorded fs to evaluate system of dynamics. Extended Modal Pushover Analysis (EMPA): Expanded Modal pushover is a one of very recent proposed methods which evaluates response of structure under multi-directional excitation using the modal pushover analysis strategy. In one specific mode,the original pushover neglect the contribution of the directions different than characteristic one, this is reasonable in regular symmetric building but a structure with complex shape like long span arch bridges may go through strong modal coupling. This method intend to consider modal coupling while it take same time of computation as MPA. Coupled Nonlinear Static Pushover Analysis (CNSP): The EMPA includes the contribution of non-characteristic direction to the formal MPA procedure. However the static pushovers in EMPA are performed individually for every mode, accordingly the resulted values from different modes can be combined but this is only valid in elastic phase; as soon as any element in structure starts yielding the neutral axis of that section is no longer fixed for both response during the earthquake, meaning the longitudinal deflection unavoidably affect the transverse one or vice versa. To overcome this drawback, the CNSP suggests executing pushover analysis for governing modes of each direction at the same time. This strategy is estimated to be more accurate than MPA and EMPA, moreover the calculation time is reduced because only one pushover analysis is required. Regardless of the strategy, the accuracy of structural analysis is highly dependent on modelling and numerical integration approaches used in evaluation of each method. Therefore the widely used Finite Element Method is implemented in process of all analysis performed in this research. In order to address the study, chapter 2, starts with gathered information about constructed long span arch bridges, this chapter continuous with geometrical and material definition of new models. Chapter 3 provides the detailed information about structural analysis strategies; furthermore the step by step description of procedure of all methods is available in Appendix A. The document ends with the description of results and conclusion of chapter 4.
