Due to growing concerns over global warming and climate change in recent years, one of the most important challenges facing our society is the efficient and economic use of energy, and with it, the corresponding need to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The Warm Mix Asphalt (WMA) technology has become an important new research topic in the field of pavement materials as it offers a potential solution for the reduction of energy consumption and GHG emissions during the production and placement of asphalt mixtures. On the other hand, pavements containing crumb-rubber modified (CRM) binders save energy and natural resources by making use of waste products. These pavements offer an improved resistance to rutting, fatigue and thermal cracking; reduce traffic noise and maintenance costs and prolong pavement life. These mixtures, however, present one major drawback: the manufacturing temperature is higher compared to conventional asphalt mixtures as the rubber lends greater viscosity to the binder and, therefore, larger amounts of GHG emissions are produced. In this dissertation the WMA technology with organic additives (Sasobit, Asphaltan A, Asphaltan B and Licomont) was applied to CRM binders (15% and 20% of rubber) in order to offer a solution to the drawbacks of asphalt rubber (AR) mixtures thanks to the use of fluidifying additives. For this purpose, this study sought to determine if a more sustainable production of AR mixtures could be obtained without significantly affecting their level of mechanical performance. The methodology applied in order to evaluate and compare the performance of the mixtures consisted of carrying out several laboratory tests for the CRM binders and AR mixtures with WMA additives (AR-WMA mixtures) and a hybrid input-output-based life cycle assessment (hLCA) of the production of WMA. The results of the study indicated that the incorporation of the organic additives were able to reduce the viscosity of the binders and, consequently, the production and compaction temperatures. On the other hand, although the addition of rubber significantly improved the mechanical behaviour of the binders at low temperatures reducing the susceptibility to thermal cracking phenomena, the addition of the waxes slightly increased the stiffness. Master curves showed that the addition of increasing percentages of rubber improved the resistance of the pavement regarding both resistance to permanent deformation at high temperatures and thermal cracking at low temperatures. In addition, the waxes improved the rutting resistance and the elasticity as they increased the complex modulus at high temperatures and decreased the phase angle. Moreover, master curves also attest that the WMA additives studied increase the stiffness at low temperatures. The creep tests carried out proved once again the improvement in the elasticity and in the resistance to permanent deformation given by the addition of the waxes. The AR-WMA mixtures studied have shown that the production/compaction temperatures can be decreased, that the mixtures would not experience binder drainage, that the additives did not significantly change the retained resistance and fulfilled the water sensitivity required. Furthermore, the additives increased the stiffness modulus in some cases and significantly improved the permanent deformation resistance. Except for one of the additives, the waxes had the same or higher fatigue resistance compared to the control mixture. The results of the hLCA demonstrated that the WMA technology is able to significantly save energy and reduce GHG emissions, up to 18% and 20%, respectively, compared to the control mixtures. However, in some of the case studies, due to the presence of wax, the manufacturing temperature at the asphalt plant must be reduced by an average of 8ºC before the benefits of reduced emissions and fuel usage can be obtained. The results regarding the overall impacts generated using a detailed production layer decomposition indicated that fuel, mining and construction sectors are the main contributors to the environmental impacts of manufacturing WMA mixtures.

The main purpose of robot calibration is the correction of the possible errors in the robot parameters. This paper presents a method for a kinematic calibration of a parallel robot that is equipped with one camera in hand. In order to preserve the mechanical configuration of the robot, the camera is utilized to acquire incremental positions of the end effector from a spherical object that is fixed in the word reference frame. The positions of the end effector are related to incremental positions of resolvers of the motors of the robot, and a kinematic model of the robot is used to find a new group of parameters which minimizes errors in the kinematic equations. Additionally, properties of the spherical object and intrinsic camera parameters are utilized to model the projection of the object in the image and improving spatial measurements. Finally, the robotic system is designed to carry out tracking tasks and the calibration of the robot is validated by means of integrating the errors of the visual controller.

Applying biometrics to daily scenarios involves demanding requirements in terms of software and hardware. On the contrary, current biometric techniques are also being adapted to present-day devices, like mobile phones, laptops and the like, which are far from meeting the previous stated requirements. In fact, achieving a combination of both necessities is one of the most difficult problems at present in biometrics. Therefore, this paper presents a segmentation algorithm able to provide suitable solutions in terms of precision for hand biometric recognition, considering a wide range of backgrounds like carpets, glass, grass, mud, pavement, plastic, tiles or wood. Results highlight that segmentation accuracy is carried out with high rates of precision (F-measure 88%)), presenting competitive time results when compared to state-of-the-art segmentation algorithms time performance

This paper presents a study on the effect of blurred images in hand biometrics. Blurred images simulates out-of-focus effects in hand image acquisition, a common consequence of unconstrained, contact-less and platform-free hand biometrics in mobile devices. The proposed biometric system presents a hand image segmentation based on multiscale aggregation, a segmentation method invariant to different changes like noise or blurriness, together with an innovative feature extraction and a template creation, oriented to obtain an invariant performance against blurring effects. The results highlight that the proposed system is invariant to some low degrees of blurriness, requiring an image quality control to detect and correct those images with a high degree of blurriness. The evaluation has considered a synthetic database created based on a publicly available database with 120 individuals. In addition, several biometric techniques could benefit from the approach proposed in this paper, since blurriness is a very common effect in biometric techniques involving image acquisition.

Biometrics applied to mobile devices are of great interest for security applications. Daily scenarios can benefit of a combination of both the most secure systems and most simple and extended devices. This document presents a hand biometric system oriented to mobile devices, proposing a non-intrusive, contact-less acquisition process where final users should take a picture of their hand in free-space with a mobile device without removals of rings, bracelets or watches. The main contribution of this paper is threefold: firstly, a feature extraction method is proposed, providing invariant hand measurements to previous changes; second contribution consists of providing a template creation based on hand geometric distances, requiring information from only one individual, without considering data from the rest of individuals within the database; finally, a proposal for template matching is proposed, minimizing the intra-class similarity and maximizing the inter-class likeliness. The proposed method is evaluated using three publicly available contact-less, platform-free databases. In addition, the results obtained with these databases will be compared to the results provided by two competitive pattern recognition techniques, namely Support Vector Machines (SVM) and k-Nearest Neighbour, often employed within the literature. Therefore, this approach provides an appropriate solution to adapt hand biometrics to mobile devices, with an accurate results and a non-intrusive acquisition procedure which increases the overall acceptance from the final user.

New trends in biometrics are oriented to mobile devices in order to increase the overall security in daily actions like bank account access, e-commerce or even document protection within the mobile. However, applying biometrics to mobile devices imply challenging aspects in biometric data acquisition, feature extraction or private data storage. Concretely, this paper attempts to deal with the problem of hand segmentation given a picture of the hand in an unknown background, requiring an accurate result in terms of hand isolation. For the sake of user acceptability, no restrictions are done on background, and therefore, hand images can be taken without any constraint, resulting segmentation in an exigent task. Multiscale aggregation strategies are proposed in order to solve this problem due to their accurate results in unconstrained and complicated scenarios, together with their properties in time performance. This method is evaluated with a public synthetic database with 480000 images considering different backgrounds and illumination environments. The results obtained in terms of accuracy and time performance highlight their capability of being a suitable solution for the problem of hand segmentation in contact-less environments, outperforming competitive methods in literature like Lossy Data Compression image segmentation (LDC).

ABSTRACT This paper addresses the use of some agricultural products (maguey bagasse and coconut fiber) and forestry (pine bark) in the State of Oaxaca (southern Mexico). The principal purpose is to locate, quantify and characterize these with the idea of applying them as substrates or substrate components in ornamental crops, forestry, horticultural, and their use as crop amendments. On the other hand, the reduction of peat and forest soil as main substrates is pursued. For the location of the products, registry parcel data from copra producers (coconut fiber generators) of the coastal region and mescal producers (maguey bagasse residue generators) of the central valleys region, as well as the locations of forest mills in the State of Oaxaca. A Geographic Information System (GIS) with digital mapping of environmental factors (climate, geology and soil), crop generators of residues (maguey bagasse, coconut and pine bark) receptors of amendments such as protected agriculture (tomato) and extensive agriculture crops (coffee, rubber, lemon, mango, coconut and agave). The annual production of waste is mapped and quantified with the following results: 624,000t maguey bagasse, coconut fiber 72,000 m3 and 86,000 t of pine bark. Through the study of receiving crops soils properties of and organic matter requirements of each crop, total needs of organic matter for each soil were estimated. The results of the total quantities for each crop across the state show a total of 3,112,000 t of organic matter needed as amendment. Using that data and a mathematical algorithm, the location of two composting plants (agave bagasse and coconut fiber) and four composting plants pine bark was proposed. In order to know the by‐products that were going to be used as substrates or substrate components, their physical‐chemical composition was analyzed following UNE‐EN technics. Furthermore they were analyzed by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). For conditioning of maguey bagasse and pine bark, composting essays were conducted. At the end of 241 days the temperature and humidity of both processes were at the recommended ranges, indicating that the materials were stabilized and had reached the quality to be used as a substrate or substrate component. Coconut shells from the community of Rio Grande Oaxaca (Main copra producing area in Oaxaca) were put through a process of dry milling. Subsequently, the obtained materials were used as components for growing media. We studied the maguey bagasse compost and seven mixtures; the pine bark compost and eight blends and coconut fiber with three mixtures. These alternative substrates allow obtaining mixtures and reduce the use of forest soil, peat, vermiculite and expanded clay, making it a sustainable alternative for greenhouse production. Specific mixtures were prepared for growing Lillium, Asian and eastern hybrids (seven blends), eco‐compatible substrates for tomato (nine mixtures), for producing forest plant (seven mixtures) and for the production of horticultural seedlings (eight mixtures). Results from maguey bagasse, pine bark and mixtures obtained are summarized as follows: the maguey bagasse, with increasing volumes of peat (20, 30, 50 and 60%) and pine bark mixed with 40 and 60% peat by volume, have very recommended values of porosity, aeration capacity, water retention capacity and water‐air balance. Coconut fiber from Rio Grande had better quality than commercial coconut fiber from Morelos. Finally the agronomic evaluation of substrates‐mixtures was carried out conducting five experiments separately: 1. Production of Asiatic and Eastern Lilium in bed for cut flower, 2. Production of oriental Lillium in container for cut flower, 3.Production of forest seedlings (Pinus greggii E and Pinus oaxacana M), 4. Production of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L) and 5. Tomato seedling production in seedbed (Solanum lycopersicum L). In relation to the production of hybrid Asian Lilium in bed, pine bark substrates (CPTU 80:20 v/v), pine bark + commercial substrate (CPSC 80:20 v/v) and pine bark + peat + expanded clay + vermiculite (CPTAEV2 30:40:15:15 v/v) showed the best results. Such substrates also have adequate results for Lilium Oriental hybrid except pine bark + peat (CPTU 80:20 v / v). In the production of Lilium oriental hybrid container for cut flower, besides the CPSC and CPTAEV2 substrates, the mixture of pine bark + peat + vermiculite expanded clay (CPTAEV 70:20:5:5 v / v) showed a favorable response. In the production of Pinus greggii E and Pinus oaxacana Mirov seedlings trial, mixtures with pine bark + peat + expanded clay + vermiculite (CPTAEV2 30:40:15:15 v/v) and maguey bagasse+ peat+ expanded clay + vermiculite (BMTAEV2 30:60:5:5 v / v) are an alternative which allows reducing the use of peat, vermiculite and expanded clay in comparison with the control substrate made of peat + expanded clay+ vermiculite (60:30 TAEV: 10 v/v). In the production of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L), alternative mixes of maguey bagasse + peat (BMT 70:30 v/v), coconut fiber from Rio Grande (FCRG 100 v / v) and pine bark + peat (CPT 70:30 v / v) showed the best results in yields versus the current use of sawdust without compost (SSC). Likewise, in the production of tomato seedlings of the two alternative mixtures maguey bagasse + peat expanded clay + vermiculite (BMTAEV5 50:30:10:10 v/v) and (BMTAEV6 40:40:10:10 v/v) had better results than those obtained in the commercial mixture (Sunshine 3), mainly used in Mexico in tomato seedling production and horticulture.

The door-closing process can reinforce the impression of a solid, rock-proof, car body or of a rather cheap, flimsy vehicle. As there are no real prototypes during rubber profile bidding-out stages, engineers need to carry out non-linear numerical simulations that involve complex phenomena as well as static and dynamic loads for several profile candidates. This paper presents a structured virtual design tool based on FEM, including constitutive laws and incompressibility constraints allowing to predict more realistically the final closing forces and even to estimate sealing overpressure as an additional guarantee of noise insulation. Comparisons with results of physical tests are performed.

This article proposes an innovative biometric technique based on the idea of authenticating a person on a mobile device by gesture recognition. To accomplish this aim, a user is prompted to be recognized by a gesture he/she performs moving his/her hand while holding a mobile device with an accelerometer embedded. As users are not able to repeat a gesture exactly in the air, an algorithm based on sequence alignment is developed to correct slight differences between repetitions of the same gesture. The robustness of this biometric technique has been studied within 2 different tests analyzing a database of 100 users with real falsifications. Equal Error Rates of 2.01 and 4.82% have been obtained in a zero-effort and an active impostor attack, respectively. A permanence evaluation is also presented from the analysis of the repetition of the gestures of 25 users in 10 sessions over a month. Furthermore, two different gesture databases have been developed: one made up of 100 genuine identifying 3-D hand gestures and 3 impostors trying to falsify each of them and another with 25 volunteers repeating their identifying 3- D hand gesture in 10 sessions over a month. These databases are the most extensive in published studies, to the best of our knowledge.
