In 2008, the City Council of Rivas-Vaciamadrid (Spain) decided to promote the construction of “Rivasecopolis”, a complex of sustainable buildings in which a new prototype of a zero-energy house would become the office of the Energy Agency. According to the initiative of the City Council, it was decided to recreate the dwelling prototype “Magic-box” which entered the 2005 Solar Decathlon Competition. The original project has been adapted to a new necessities programme, by adding the necessary spaces that allows it to work as an office. A team from university has designed and carried out the direction of the construction site. The new Solar House is conceived as a “testing building”. It is going to become the space for attending citizens in all questions about saving energy, energy efficiency and sustainable construction, having a permanent small exhibition space additional to the working places for the information purpose. At the same time, the building includes the use of experimental passive architecture systems and a monitoring and control system. Collected data will be sent to University to allow developing research work about the experimental strategies included in the building. This paper will describe and analyze the experience of transforming a prototype into a real durable building and the benefits for both university and citizens in learning about sustainability with the building

The proposal seeks to develop new tools for the understanding of the Architectural limits and borders. By understanding of limit`s physical and psychological qualities, I seek that architecture could generate a breakdown of the simplistic binary oppositions that are at the base of the traditional Architectural understanding; concepts such as interior / exterior, inside / outside, object/subject, city/countryside, nature/artifice; They are from my point of view atavism that must be overcome in order to produce an architecture according to the times, that suit the conditions of their milieu. By understanding that limits embodies the existence of dual and hybrid situations that occur on both sides of the limit, I manage to take stressful situations of , denial, bargaining, confrontation, contrast, etc., the proposal seeks to assess the characteristics of living , dialogue and respect of the traditional city. I.e. the political characteristics of the polis and civitas. By realizing that the man is a political animal par excellence, the proposal seeks to strengthen political and socialization architectural character. Through the understanding of spatial relationships that shocking bodies generates in space; and the need for architecture and city limits get physically and programmatically transgressed to acquire a more dynamic and porous nature that helps in this relationship. The proposal introduces examples of flight lines and breaks, which can be realized through small interventions. Architectural interventions, despite his limited formal resources can generate exponentially greater results that transform the initial conditions of the site.

Recent research has shown large differences between the expected and the actual energy consumption in buildings. The differences have been attributed partially, to the assumptions made during the design phase of buildings when simulation methods are employed. More accurate occupancy profiles on building operation could help to carry out more precise building performance calculations. This study focuses on the post-occupancy evaluation of two apartments, one renovated and one non renovated, in Madrid within the same building complex. The aim of this paper is to present an application of the mixed-methods methodology (Creswell, 2007) to assess thermal comfort and occupancy practices used in the case studies, and to discuss the shortcomings and opportunities associated with it. The mixed-methods methodology offers strategies for integrating qualitative and quantitative methods to investigate complex phenomena. This approach is expected to contribute to the growing knowledge of occupants’ behaviour and building performance by explaining the differences observed between energy consumption and thermal comfort in relation to people’s saving and comfort practices and the related experiences, preferences and values.
