To study the fluid motion-vehicle dynamics interaction, a model of four, liquid filled two-axle container freight wagons was set up. The railway vehicle has been modelled as a multi-body system (MBS). To include fluid sloshing, an equivalent mechanical model has been developed and incorporated. The influence of several factors has been studied in computer simulations, such as track defects, curve negotiation, train velocity, wheel wear, liquid and solid wagonload, and container baffles. SIMPACK has been used for MBS analysis, and ANSYS for liquid sloshing modelling and equivalent mechanical systems validation. Acceleration and braking manoeuvres of the freight train set the liquid cargo into motion. This longitudinal sloshing motion of the fluid cargo inside the tanks initiated a swinging motion of some components of the coupling gear. The coupling gear consists of UIC standard traction hooks and coupling screws that are located between buffers. One of the coupling screws is placed in the traction hook of the opposite wagon thus joining the two wagons, whereas the unused coupling screw rests on a hanger. Simulation results showed that, for certain combinations of type of liquid, filling level and container dimensions, the liquid cargo could provoke an undesirable, although not hazardous, release of the unused coupling screw from its hanger. The coupling screw's release was especially obtained when a period of acceleration was followed by an abrupt braking manoeuvre at 1 m/s2. It was shown that a resonance effect between the liquid's oscillation and the coupling screw's rotary motion could be the reason for the coupling screw's undesired release. Possible solutions to avoid the phenomenon are given.Acceleration and braking manoeuvres of the freight train set the liquid cargo into motion. Simulation results showed that, for certain combinations of type of liquid, filling level and container dimensions, the liquid cargo could provoke an undesirable, although not hazardous, release of an unused coupling screw from its hanger. This paper presents a System Safety application to reduce the economical impact hazards in growings produced by Rainfall. System Safety is an engineering subdiscipline oriented to identify and mitigate the possible hazards to a system under study. Inside the System Safety area, the FMECA (Failure Mode, Effects and Criticallity Analysis) is a popular tool to analyze and identify the failures and weaknesses points of any system. Basically, it consist on identifying systematically the failure modes of a system to mitigate them as much as possible. The idea is to study three different kind of growings (stone fruits in the south of Spain, wheat production in Castilla Leon and Olive trees production in Andalucia) using this methodology in order to identify all the hazardous situations produced by rainfall. Applying the state of the art weather forecast techniques, this information would help farmers to prevent and mitigate the identified hazardous situations. The aim of the work is to prevent the economical hazards as are defined in the System Safety area: "Any real or potential condition that can cause injury, illness, or death to personnel; damage to or loss of a system, equipment or property; or damage to the environment", so the study is not reduced to the analysis of catastrophical situations but aboutany kind of economical damage produced by rainfall.

This study assessed the applicability of a ferrous oxalate mediated photo-Fenton pretreatment for indigo-dyed wastewaters as to produce a biodegradable enough effluent, likely of being derived to conventional biological processes. The photochemical treatment was performed with ferrous oxalate and hydrogen peroxide in a Compound Parabolic Concentrator (CPC) under batch operation conditions. The reaction was studied at natural pH conditions (5–6) with indigo concentrations in the range of 6.67–33.33 mg L−1, using a fixed oxalate-to-iron mass ratio (C2O42−/Fe2+ = 35) and assessing the system's biodegradability at low (257 mg L−1) and high (1280 mg L−1) H2O2 concentrations. In order to seek the optimal conditions for the treatment of indigo dyed wastewaters, an experimental design consisting in a statistical surface response approach was carried out. This analysis revealed that the best removal efficiencies for Total Organic Carbon (TOC) were obtained for low peroxide doses. In general it was observed that after 20 kJ L−1, almost every treated effluent increased its biodegradability from a BOD5/COD value of 0.4. This increase in the biodegradability was confirmed by the presence of short chain carboxylic acids as intermediate products and by the mineralization of organic nitrogen into nitrate. Finally, an overall decrease in the LC50 for Artemia salina indicated a successful detoxification of the effluent.

This project investigates the utility of differential algebra (DA) techniques applied to the problem of orbital dynamics with initial uncertainties in the orbital determination of the involved bodies. The use of DA theory allows the splitting of a common Monte Carlo simulation in two parts: the generation of a Taylor map of the final states with regard to the perturbation in the initial coordinates, and the evaluation of the map for many points. A propagator is implemented exploiting DA techniques, and tested in the field of asteroid impact risk monitoring with the potentially hazardous 2011 AG5 and 2007 VK184 as test cases. Results show that the new method is able to simulate 2.5 million trajectories with a precision good enough for the impact probability to be accurately reproduced, while running much faster than a traditional Monte Carlo approach (in 1 and 2 days, respectively).

Development of PCB-integrateable microsensors for monitoring chemical species is a goal in areas such as lab-on-a-chip analytical devices, diagnostics medicine and electronics for hand-held instruments where the device size is a major issue. Cellular phones have pervaded the world inhabitants and their usefulness has dramatically increased with the introduction of smartphones due to a combination of amazing processing power in a confined space, geolocalization and manifold telecommunication features. Therefore, a number of physical and chemical sensors that add value to the terminal for health monitoring, personal safety (at home, at work) and, eventually, national security have started to be developed, capitalizing also on the huge number of circulating cell phones. The chemical sensor-enabled “super” smartphone provides a unique (bio)sensing platform for monitoring airborne or waterborne hazardous chemicals or microorganisms for both single user and crowdsourcing security applications. Some of the latest ones are illustrated by a few examples. Moreover, we have recently achieved for the first time (covalent) functionalization of p- and n-GaN semiconductor surfaces with tuneable luminescent indicator dyes of the Ru-polypyridyl family, as a key step in the development of innovative microsensors for smartphone applications. Chemical “sensoring” of GaN-based blue LED chips with those indicators has also been achieved by plasma treatment of their surface, and the micrometer-sized devices have been tested to monitor O2 in the gas phase to show their full functionality. Novel strategies to enhance the sensor sensitivity such as changing the length and nature of the siloxane buffer layer are discussed in this paper.

The road to the automation of the agricultural processes passes through the safe operation of the autonomous vehicles. This requirement is a fact in ground mobile units, but it still has not well defined for the aerial robots (UAVs) mainly because the normative and legislation are quite diffuse or even inexistent. Therefore, to define a common and global policy is the challenge to tackle. This characterization has to be addressed from the field experience. Accordingly, this paper presents the work done in this direction, based on the analysis of the most common sources of hazards when using UAV's for agricultural tasks. The work, based on the ISO 31000 normative, has been carried out by applying a three-step structure that integrates the identification, assessment and reduction procedures. The present paper exposes how this method has been applied to analyze previous accidents and malfunctions during UAV operations in order to obtain real failure causes. It has allowed highlighting common risks and hazardous sources and proposing specific guards and safety measures for the agricultural context.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are spearheading the efforts taken to build and deploy systems aiming to accomplish the ultimate objectives of the Internet of Things. Due to the sensors WSNs nodes are provided with, and to their ubiquity and pervasive capabilities, these networks become extremely suitable for many applications that so-called conventional cabled or wireless networks are unable to handle. One of these still underdeveloped applications is monitoring physical parameters on a person. This is an especially interesting application regarding their age or activity, for any detected hazardous parameter can be notified not only to the monitored person as a warning, but also to any third party that may be helpful under critical circumstances, such as relatives or healthcare centers. We propose a system built to monitor a sportsman/woman during a workout session or performing a sport-related indoor activity. Sensors have been deployed by means of several nodes acting as the nodes of a WSN, along with a semantic middleware development used for hardware complexity abstraction purposes. The data extracted from the environment, combined with the information obtained from the user, will compose the basis of the services that can be obtained.

Maximizing energy autonomy is a consistent challenge when deploying mobile robots in ionizing radiation or other hazardous environments. Having a reliable robot system is essential for successful execution of missions and to avoid manual recovery of the robots in environments that are harmful to human beings. For deployment of robots missions at short notice, the ability to know beforehand the energy required for performing the task is essential. This paper presents a on-line method for predicting energy requirements based on the pre-determined power models for a mobile robot. A small mobile robot, Khepera III is used for the experimental study and the results are promising with high prediction accuracy. The applications of the energy prediction models in energy optimization and simulations are also discussed along with examples of significant energy savings.

Los conjuntos bacterianos son sistemas dinámicos difíciles de modelar debido a que las bacterias colaboran e intercambian información entre sí. Estos microorganismos procariotas pueden tomar decisiones por mayoría e intercambiar información genética importante que, por ejemplo, las haga resistentes a un antibiótico. El proceso de conjugación consiste en el intercambio de un plásmido de una bacteria con otra, permitiendo así que se transfieran propiedades. Estudios recientes han demostrado que estos plásmidos pueden ser reprogramados artificialmente para que la bacteria que lo contenga realice una función específica [1]. Entre la multitud de aplicaciones que supone esta idea, el proyecto europeo PLASWIRES está intentando demostrar que es posible usar organismos vivos como computadores distribuidos en paralelo y plásmidos como conexión entre ellos mediante conjugación. Por tanto, mediante una correcta programación de un plásmido, se puede conseguir, por ejemplo, hacer que una colonia de bacterias haga la función de un antibiótico o detecte otros plásmidos peligrosos en bacterias virulentas. El proceso experimental para demostrar esta idea puede llegar a ser algo lento y tedioso, por lo que es necesario el uso de simuladores que predigan su comportamiento. Debido a que el proyecto PLASWIRES se basa en la conjugación bacteriana, surge la necesidad de un simulador que reproduzca esta operación. El presente trabajo surge debido a la deficiencia del simulador GRO para reproducir la conjugación. En este documento se detallan las modificaciones necesarias para que GRO pueda representar este proceso, así como analizar los datos obtenidos e intentar ajustar el modelo a los datos obtenidos por el Instituto de Biomedicina y Biotecnología de Cantabria (IBBTEC). ---ABSTRACT---Bacterial colonies are dynamical systems difficult to model because bacteria collaborate and exchange information with each other. These prokaryotic organisms can make decisions by majority and exchange important genetic information, for example, make them resistant to an antibiotic. The conjugation process is the exchange of a plasmid from one bacterium to another, allowing both to have the same properties. Recent studies have shown that these plasmids can be artificially reprogrammed to make the bacteria that contain it to perform a specific function [1]. Among the multitude of applications involved in this idea, the European project PLASWIRES is attempting to prove that it is possible to use living organisms as parallel and distributed computers with plasmids acting as connectors between them through conjugation. Thus, by properly programming a plasmid, you can get a colony of bacteria that work as an antibiotic or detect hazardous plasmids in virulent bacteria. The experimental process to prove this idea can be slow and tedious, so the use of simulators to predict their behavior is required. Since PLASWIRES project is based on bacterial conjugation, a simulator that can reproduce this operation is required. This work arises due to the absence of the conjugation process in the simulator GRO. This document details the changes made to GRO to represent this process, analyze the data and try to adjust the model to the data obtained by the Institute of Biomedicine and Biotechnology of Cantabria ( IBBTEC ). This project has two main objectives, the first is to add the functionality of intercellular communication by conjugation to the simulator GRO, and the second is to use the experimental data obtained by the IBBTEC. To do this, the following points should be followed: • Study of conjugation biology as a mechanism of intercellular communication. • Design and implementation of the algorithm that simulates conjugation. • Experimental validation and model adjust to the experimental data on rates of conjugation and bacterial growth.

La gestión de estériles de una explotación minera es un punto clave en el desarrollo económico de una actividad extractiva, y en especial, del entorno natural y social en el que se emplaza dicho proyecto. La minería de metales preciosos lleva asociada la construcción de balsas de residuos muy peligrosos, fruto de su proceso extractivo, como por ejemplo la cianuración en el caso del oro. Para un correcto funcionamiento de dichos emplazamientos es necesario escoger correctamente el método constructivo a partir de estudios de reconocimiento previos, como estudios de estabilidad geotécnica, contexto geológico de la zona, sismicidad, hidrología, etc. Así mismo, han de llevarse a cabo unas exhaustivas medidas de control y vigilancia para asegurar las condiciones de seguridad exigidas. La ruptura de la balsa de decantación de Aurul S.A. en Baia Mare (Rumania) el 30 de Enero del año 2000 ha sido escogido como caso de estudio de estabilidad de diques. ABSTRACT Tailing's management of a mining exploitation is a key point in the economical development of the extractive activity and, especially, of the natural and social environment of the site. Precious metals mining has high hazardous embankment construction associated, product of its extractive process, i.e. gold cyanidation. A correct operation of those sites makes necessary to choose a suitable construction method, based on previous studies as geotechnical stability studies, geological context of the area, seismicity, hydrology, etc. At the same time, exhaustive control and monitoring must be carried out in order to assure the required safety conditions. Aurul's decantation pond failure in Baia Mare (Romania), on 30th January 2000, has been chosen as a stability analysis case-study.

The progressive ageing of population has turned the mild cognitive impairment (MCI) into a prevalent disease suffered by elderly. Consequently, the spatial disorientation has become a significant problem for older people and their caregivers. The ambient-assisted living applications are offering location-based services for empowering elderly to go outside and encouraging a greater independence. Therefore, this paper describes the design and technical evaluation of a location-awareness service enabler aimed at supporting and managing probable wandering situations of a person with MCI. Through the presence capabilities of the IP multimedia subsystem (IMS) architecture, the service will alert patient's contacts if a hazardous situation is detected depending on his location. Furthermore, information about the older person's security areas has been included in the user profile managed by IMS. In doing so, the service enabler introduced contribute to “context-awareness” paradigm allowing the adaptation and personalization of services depending on user's context and specific conditions or preferences.

En la actualidad las industrias químicas, farmacéuticas y clínicas, originan contaminantes en aguas superficiales, aguas subterráneas y suelos de nuestro país, como es el caso del fenol, contaminante orgánico común y altamente dañino para los organismos, incluso a bajas concentraciones. Existen en el mercado diferentes metodologías para minimizar la contaminación pero muchos de estos procesos tienen un alto coste, generación de contaminantes, etc. La adsorción de contaminantes por medio de arcillas es un método ampliamente utilizado, encontrándose eficaz y económico. Pero la dificultad de adsorber un contaminante orgánico como el fenol motiva la creación de un material llamado organoarcillas. Las organoarcillas son arcillas modificadas con un surfactante, a su vez, los surfactantes son moléculas orgánicas que confieren a la superficie de la arcilla carga catiónica en lugar de aniónica, haciendo más fácil la adsorción de fenol. Para esta tesis se ha elegido el caolín como material adsorbente, fácilmente disponible y relativamente de bajo coste. Se ha trabajado con: arenas de caolín, material directo de la extracción, y caolín lavado, originado del proceso de lavado de las arenas de caolín. Ambos grupos se diferencian fundamentalmente por su contenido en cuarzo, ampliamente mayor en las arenas de caolín. Con el objetivo de desarrollar un material a partir del caolín y arenas de éste con capacidad de retención de contaminates, en concreto, fenol, se procedió a modificar los materiales de partida mediante tratamientos térmicos, mecánicos y/o químicos, dando lugar a compuestos con mayor superficie química reactiva. Para ello se sometió el caolín y las arenas caoliníferas a temperaturas de 750ºC durante 3h, a moliendas hasta alcanzar su amorfización, y/o a activaciones con HCl 6M o con NaOH 5M durante 3h a 90ºC. En total se obtuvieron 18 muestras, en las que se estudiaron las características físico-químicas, mineralógicas y morfológicas de cada una de ellas con el fin de caracterizarlas después de haber sufrido los tratamientos y/o activaciones químicas. Los cambios producidos fueron estudiados mediante pH, capacidad de intercambio catiónico (CEC), capacidad de adsorción de agua (WCU y CWC), distribución de tamaño de partícula (PSD), área de superficie específica (SBET), difracción de rayos X (XRD), espectroscopía infrarroja por transformada de Fourier (FTIR), métodos térmicos (TG, DTG y DTA), y microscopía electrónica de transmisión y barrido (SEM y TEM). Además se analizó los cambios producidos por los tratamientos en función de las pérdidas de Al y Si que acontece en las 18 muestras. Los resultados para los materiales derivados de la arenas caoliníferas fueron similares a los obtenidos para los caolines lavados, la diferencia radica en la cantidad de contenido de caolinita en los diferente grupos de muestras. Apoyándonos en las técnicas de caracterización se puede observar que los tratamientos térmico y molienda produce materiales amorfos, este cambio en la estructura inicial sumado a las activaciones ácida y alcalina dan lugar a pérdidas de Si y Al, ocasionando que sus propiedades físico-químicas, mineralógicas y morfológicas se vean alteradas. Un fuerte aumento es observado en las áreas superficiales y en la CEC en determinadas muestras, además entre los cambios producidos se encuentra la producción de diferentes zeolitas en porcentajes distintos con el tratamiento alcalino. Para la obtención de las organoarcillas, las 18 muestras se sometieron a la surfactación con hexadeciltrimetil amonio (HDTMA) 20 mM durante 24h a 60ºC, esta concentración de tensioactivo fue más alta que la CEC de cada muestra. Los camext bios anteriormente producidos por los tratamientos y activaciones, afectan de forma diferente en la adsorción de HDTMA, variando por tanto la adsorción del surfactante en la superficie de las muestras. Se determinó el tensioactivo en superficie por FTIR, además se realizó un análisis de componentes principales (PCA) para examinar la dependencia entre las relaciones Si/Al de las muestras en la capacidad de adsorción de tensioactivo, y para el estudio de la adsorción de HDTMA en las muestras se realizaron además del análisis termogravimétrico, aproximaciones con los modelos de Freundllich y Langmuir. Se persigue conocer las diferentes formas y maneras que tiene el tensioactivo de fijarse en la superficie de las muestras. En las organoarcillas resultantes se cuantificó el fenol adsorbido cuando éstas fueron puestas en contacto con diferentes concentraciones de fenol: 50, 500, 1000, 2000, y 2500 mg/l durante 24h. El contaminante sorbido se calculó por medio de cromatografía de gases, y se realizaron aproximaciones con los modelos de Freundllich y Langmuir. El comportamiento de adsorción de fenol en arcillas orgánicas es regido por las características de las muestras. De forma general se puede decir que las muestras de caolines lavados tienen más capacidad de adsorción de fenol que las muestras de arenas de caolín y que la activación alcalina ha proporcionado una mejora en la adsorción de fenol en los dos grupos. En consecuencia se han obtenido materiales adsorbentes heterogéneos y por tanto, con propiedades diferentes. Se ha evaluado el comportamiento global de las arenas de caolín por un lado y del caolín lavado por otro. Las arenas de caolín presentan altos niveles de cuarzo y su uso para ciertos tipos de industrias no son recomendados en ocasiones por el alto costo que el proceso de limpieza y purificación implicaría. Por ello es importante reseñar en este proyecto las aplicaciones que ofrecen algunas muestras de este grupo. ABSTRACT Today’s chemical, pharmaceutical and clinical industries generate pollutants that affect the soils and surface and ground waters of our country. Among these, phenol is a common organic pollutant that is extremely harmful to living organisms, even at low concentrations. Several protocols exist to minimize the effects of pollutants, but most are costly procedures or even generate other pollutants. The adsorption of hazardous materials onto clays is perhaps the most used, efficient and cost-saving method available. However, organic compounds such as phenol are difficult to adsorb and this has led to the development of materials known as organoclays, which are much better at remediating organic compounds. Organoclays are clays that have been modified using a surfactant. In turn, surfactants are organic molecules that confer a cationic rather than anionic charge to the clay surface, improving it’s capacity to adsorb phenol. For this doctorate project, kaolin was selected as an adsorbent material for the removal of phenol given its easy sourcing and relatively low cost. The materials investigated were kaolin sand, a directly extracted material, and washed kaolin, which is the byproduct of the kaolin sand washing process. The main difference between the materials is their quartz content, which is much higher in the kaolin sands. To generate a product from kaolin or kaolin sand capable of retaining organic pollutants such as phenol, both materials were subjected to several heat, chemical and/or mechanical treatments to give rise to compounds with a greater reactive surface area. To this end the two starting materials underwent heating at 750ºC for 3 h, grinding to the point of amorphization and/or activation with HCl 6M or NaOH 5M for 3 h at 90ºC. These treatments gave rise to 18 processed samples, which were characterized in terms of their morphological, mineralogical, and physical-chemical properties. The behaviour of these new materials was examined in terms of their pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), water adsorption capacity (WCU and WCC), particle size distribution (PSD), specific surface area (SBET), and their X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), thermal (DTG, DTA) and scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) properties. The changes conferred by the different treatments were also examined in terms of Al and Si losses. Results for the materials derived from kaolin sands and washed kaolin were similar, with differences attributable to the kaolinite contents of the samples. The treatments heat and grinding produced amorphous materials, which when subjected to acid or alkali activation gave rise to Si and Al losses. This in turn led to a change in physico- chemical, mineralogical and morphological properties. Some samples showed a highly increased surface area and CEC. Further, among the changes produced, alkali treatment led to the generation of zeolites in different proportions depending on the sample. To produce the organoclays, the 18 samples were surfacted with hexadecyltrimethylammonium (HDTMA) 20 mM for 24 h at 60ºC. This surfactant concentration is higher than the CEC of each sample. The amount of HDTMA adsorbed onto the surface of each sample determined by FTIR varied according to treatment. A principle components analysis (PCA) was performed to examine correlations between sample Si/Al ratios and surfactant adsorption capacity. In addition, to explore HDTMA adsorption by the samples, DTG and DTA data were fitted to Freundllich and Langmuir models. The mechanisms of surfactant attachment to the sample surface were also addressed. The amount of phenol adsorbed by the resultant organoclays was determined when exposed to different phenol concentrations: 50, 500, 1000, 2000, and 2500 mg/l for 24 h. The quantity of adsorbed pollutant was estimated by gas chromatography and the data fitted to the models of Freundllich and Langmuir. Results indicate that the phenol adsorption capacity of the surfacted samples is dependent on the sample’s characteristics. In general, the washed kaolin samples showed a greater phenol adsorption capacity than the kaolon sands and alkali activation improved this capacity in the two types of sample. In conclusion, the treatments used gave rise to adsorbent materials with varying properties. Kaolin sands showed high quartz levels and their use in some industries is not recommended due to the costs involved in their washing and purification. The applications suggested by the data obtained for some of the kaolin sand samples indicate the added value of this industrial by-product. Esta tesis presenta los resultados de la investigación realizada sobre la inertización de cenizas volantes procedentes de residuos sólidos urbanos y su posterior encapsulación en distintas matrices de mortero. Durante el proceso de inertización, se ha logrado la inertización de éste residuo tóxico y peligroso (RTP) y también su valorización como subproducto. De esta forma se dispone de nueva “materia prima” a bajo coste y la eliminación de un residuo tóxico y peligroso con la consiguiente conservación de recursos naturales alternativos. La caracterización química de las cenizas analizadas refleja que éstas presentan altas concentraciones de cloruros, Zn y Pb. Durante la investigación se ha desarrollado un proceso de inertización de las cenizas volantes con bicarbonato sódico (NaHCO3) que reduce en un 99% el contenido en cloruros y mantiene el pH en valores óptimos para que la concentración de los metales pesados en el lixiviado sea mínima debido a su estabilización en forma de carbonatos insolubles. Se han elaborado morteros con cuatro tipos distintos de cementos (CEM-I, CEM-II, CAC y CSA) incorporando cenizas volantes inertizadas en una proporción igual a un 10% en peso del árido utilizado. Los morteros ensayados abarcan distintas dosificaciones tanto en la utilización de áridos con distintos diámetros (0/2 y 0/4), como en la relación cemento/árido (1/1 y 1/3). Se han obtenido las propiedades físicas y mecánicas de estos morteros mediante ensayos de Trabajabilidad, Estabilidad Dimensional, Carbonatación, Porosidad y Resistencias Mecánicas. De igual forma, se presentan resultados de ensayos de lixiviación de Zn, Pb, Cu y Cd, sobre probetas monolíticas de los morteros con los mejores comportamientos físico/mecánicos, donde se ha analizado el contenido en iones de dichos metales pesados lixiviados mediante determinación voltamperométrica de redisolución anódica Se concluye que todos los morteros ensayados son técnicamente aceptables, siendo los más favorables los elaborados con Cemento de Sulfoaluminato de Calcio (CSA) y con Cemento de Aluminato de Calcio (CAC). En este último caso, se mejoran las resistencias a compresión de los morteros de referencia en más de un 48%, y las resistencias a flexión en más de un 67%. De igual forma, los ensayos de lixiviado revelan la completa encapsulación de los iones de Zn y la mitigación en el lixiviado de los iones de Pb. Ambos morteros podrían ser perfectamente validos en actuaciones en las que se necesitase un producto de fraguado rápido, altas resistencias iniciales y compensación de las retracciones con una elevada estabilidad dimensional. En base a esto, el material podría ser utilizado como mortero de reparación en viales y pavimentos que requiriesen altas prestaciones, tales como: soleras industriales, pistas de aterrizaje, aparcamientos, etc. O bien, para la confección de elementos prefabricados sin armaduras estructurales, dada su elevada resistencia a flexión. ABSTRACT This dissertation presents the results of a research on inerting fly ash from urban solid waste and its subsequent encapsulation in mortar matrixes. The inerting of this hazardous toxic waste, as well as its valorization as a by-product has been achieved. In this way, a new "raw material" is available through a simple process and the toxic and hazardous waste is eliminated, and consequently, conservation of alternative natural resources is strengthened. Chemical analysis of the ashes analyzed shows high concentrations of soluble chlorides, Zn and Pb. An inerting process of fly ash with sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) has been developed which reduces 99% the content of chlorides and maintains pH at optimal values, so that the concentration of heavy metals in the leachate is minimum, due to its stabilization in the form of insoluble carbonates. Mortars with four different types of cements (CEM-I, CEM-II, CAC and CSA) have been developed by the addition of inertized fly ash in the form of carbonates, in the proportion of 10% in weight of the aggregates used. The samples tested include different proportions in the use of aggregates with different sizes (0/2 and 0/4), and in the cement/aggregate ratio (1/1 and 1/3). Physical/mechanical properties of these mortars have been studied through workability, dimensional stability, carbonation, porosity and mechanic strength tests. Leaching tests of Zn, Pb, Cu and Cd ions are also being performed on monolithic samples of the best behavioral mortars. The content in leachated heavy metal ions is being analyzed through stripping voltammetry determination. Conclusions drawn are that the tested CAC and CSA cement mortars present much better behavior than those of CEM-I and CEM-II cement. The results are especially remarkable for the CAC cement mortars, improving reference mortars compression strengths in more than 48%, and also bending strengths in more than 67%. Leaching tests confirm that the encapsulation of Zn and Pb is achieved and leachate of both ions is mitigated within the mortar matrixes. For the above stated reasons, it might be concluded that mortars made with calcium aluminate cements or calcium sulfoaluminate with the incorporation of treated fly ash, may be perfectly valid for uses in which a fast-curing product, with high initial strength and drying shrinkage compensation with a high dimensional stability is required. Based on this, the material could be used as repair mortar for structures, roads and industrial pavements requiring high performance, such as: industrial floorings, landing tracks, parking lots, etc. Alternatively, it could also be used in the manufacture of prefabricated elements without structural reinforcement, given its high bending strength.

TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2NPs) prepared by the sol–gel method have been incorporated to cement paste with the aim of creating a photocatalytic system capable of compensating, through degradation of hazardous molecules, the envi- ronmental impact associated to the production of the clinker. Doping was carried out at different mass ratios with TiO2NPs precursor solutions within a fresh ce- ment paste, which was then characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The photocatalytic performance was evaluated by the degradation of Methylene Blue (MB) using a 125W UV lamp as irradiating source. Main cement properties such as hydration degree and C-S-H content are affected by TiO2NPs doping level. Cement containing TiO2NPs exhibited an increasing photocatalytic activity for increasing doping, while the pure cement paste control could hardly degrade MB. The kinetics of the system where also studied and their second order behavior related to microstructural aspects of the system.

Los sistemas empotrados han sido concebidos tradicionalmente como sistemas de procesamiento específicos que realizan una tarea fija durante toda su vida útil. Para cumplir con requisitos estrictos de coste, tamaño y peso, el equipo de diseño debe optimizar su funcionamiento para condiciones muy específicas. Sin embargo, la demanda de mayor versatilidad, un funcionamiento más inteligente y, en definitiva, una mayor capacidad de procesamiento comenzaron a chocar con estas limitaciones, agravado por la incertidumbre asociada a entornos de operación cada vez más dinámicos donde comenzaban a ser desplegados progresivamente. Esto trajo como resultado una necesidad creciente de que los sistemas pudieran responder por si solos a eventos inesperados en tiempo diseño tales como: cambios en las características de los datos de entrada y el entorno del sistema en general; cambios en la propia plataforma de cómputo, por ejemplo debido a fallos o defectos de fabricación; y cambios en las propias especificaciones funcionales causados por unos objetivos del sistema dinámicos y cambiantes. Como consecuencia, la complejidad del sistema aumenta, pero a cambio se habilita progresivamente una capacidad de adaptación autónoma sin intervención humana a lo largo de la vida útil, permitiendo que tomen sus propias decisiones en tiempo de ejecución. Éstos sistemas se conocen, en general, como sistemas auto-adaptativos y tienen, entre otras características, las de auto-configuración, auto-optimización y auto-reparación. Típicamente, la parte soft de un sistema es mayoritariamente la única utilizada para proporcionar algunas capacidades de adaptación a un sistema. Sin embargo, la proporción rendimiento/potencia en dispositivos software como microprocesadores en muchas ocasiones no es adecuada para sistemas empotrados. En este escenario, el aumento resultante en la complejidad de las aplicaciones está siendo abordado parcialmente mediante un aumento en la complejidad de los dispositivos en forma de multi/many-cores; pero desafortunadamente, esto hace que el consumo de potencia también aumente. Además, la mejora en metodologías de diseño no ha sido acorde como para poder utilizar toda la capacidad de cómputo disponible proporcionada por los núcleos. Por todo ello, no se están satisfaciendo adecuadamente las demandas de cómputo que imponen las nuevas aplicaciones. La solución tradicional para mejorar la proporción rendimiento/potencia ha sido el cambio a unas especificaciones hardware, principalmente usando ASICs. Sin embargo, los costes de un ASIC son altamente prohibitivos excepto en algunos casos de producción en masa y además la naturaleza estática de su estructura complica la solución a las necesidades de adaptación. Los avances en tecnologías de fabricación han hecho que la FPGA, una vez lenta y pequeña, usada como glue logic en sistemas mayores, haya crecido hasta convertirse en un dispositivo de cómputo reconfigurable de gran potencia, con una cantidad enorme de recursos lógicos computacionales y cores hardware empotrados de procesamiento de señal y de propósito general. Sus capacidades de reconfiguración han permitido combinar la flexibilidad propia del software con el rendimiento del procesamiento en hardware, lo que tiene la potencialidad de provocar un cambio de paradigma en arquitectura de computadores, pues el hardware no puede ya ser considerado más como estático. El motivo es que como en el caso de las FPGAs basadas en tecnología SRAM, la reconfiguración parcial dinámica (DPR, Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration) es posible. Esto significa que se puede modificar (reconfigurar) un subconjunto de los recursos computacionales en tiempo de ejecución mientras el resto permanecen activos. Además, este proceso de reconfiguración puede ser ejecutado internamente por el propio dispositivo. El avance tecnológico en dispositivos hardware reconfigurables se encuentra recogido bajo el campo conocido como Computación Reconfigurable (RC, Reconfigurable Computing). Uno de los campos de aplicación más exóticos y menos convencionales que ha posibilitado la computación reconfigurable es el conocido como Hardware Evolutivo (EHW, Evolvable Hardware), en el cual se encuentra enmarcada esta tesis. La idea principal del concepto consiste en convertir hardware que es adaptable a través de reconfiguración en una entidad evolutiva sujeta a las fuerzas de un proceso evolutivo inspirado en el de las especies biológicas naturales, que guía la dirección del cambio. Es una aplicación más del campo de la Computación Evolutiva (EC, Evolutionary Computation), que comprende una serie de algoritmos de optimización global conocidos como Algoritmos Evolutivos (EA, Evolutionary Algorithms), y que son considerados como algoritmos universales de resolución de problemas. En analogía al proceso biológico de la evolución, en el hardware evolutivo el sujeto de la evolución es una población de circuitos que intenta adaptarse a su entorno mediante una adecuación progresiva generación tras generación. Los individuos pasan a ser configuraciones de circuitos en forma de bitstreams caracterizados por descripciones de circuitos reconfigurables. Seleccionando aquellos que se comportan mejor, es decir, que tienen una mejor adecuación (o fitness) después de ser evaluados, y usándolos como padres de la siguiente generación, el algoritmo evolutivo crea una nueva población hija usando operadores genéticos como la mutación y la recombinación. Según se van sucediendo generaciones, se espera que la población en conjunto se aproxime a la solución óptima al problema de encontrar una configuración del circuito adecuada que satisfaga las especificaciones. El estado de la tecnología de reconfiguración después de que la familia de FPGAs XC6200 de Xilinx fuera retirada y reemplazada por las familias Virtex a finales de los 90, supuso un gran obstáculo para el avance en hardware evolutivo; formatos de bitstream cerrados (no conocidos públicamente); dependencia de herramientas del fabricante con soporte limitado de DPR; una velocidad de reconfiguración lenta; y el hecho de que modificaciones aleatorias del bitstream pudieran resultar peligrosas para la integridad del dispositivo, son algunas de estas razones. Sin embargo, una propuesta a principios de los años 2000 permitió mantener la investigación en el campo mientras la tecnología de DPR continuaba madurando, el Circuito Virtual Reconfigurable (VRC, Virtual Reconfigurable Circuit). En esencia, un VRC en una FPGA es una capa virtual que actúa como un circuito reconfigurable de aplicación específica sobre la estructura nativa de la FPGA que reduce la complejidad del proceso reconfiguración y aumenta su velocidad (comparada con la reconfiguración nativa). Es un array de nodos computacionales especificados usando descripciones HDL estándar que define recursos reconfigurables ad-hoc: multiplexores de rutado y un conjunto de elementos de procesamiento configurables, cada uno de los cuales tiene implementadas todas las funciones requeridas, que pueden seleccionarse a través de multiplexores tal y como ocurre en una ALU de un microprocesador. Un registro grande actúa como memoria de configuración, por lo que la reconfiguración del VRC es muy rápida ya que tan sólo implica la escritura de este registro, el cual controla las señales de selección del conjunto de multiplexores. Sin embargo, esta capa virtual provoca: un incremento de área debido a la implementación simultánea de cada función en cada nodo del array más los multiplexores y un aumento del retardo debido a los multiplexores, reduciendo la frecuencia de funcionamiento máxima. La naturaleza del hardware evolutivo, capaz de optimizar su propio comportamiento computacional, le convierten en un buen candidato para avanzar en la investigación sobre sistemas auto-adaptativos. Combinar un sustrato de cómputo auto-reconfigurable capaz de ser modificado dinámicamente en tiempo de ejecución con un algoritmo empotrado que proporcione una dirección de cambio, puede ayudar a satisfacer los requisitos de adaptación autónoma de sistemas empotrados basados en FPGA. La propuesta principal de esta tesis está por tanto dirigida a contribuir a la auto-adaptación del hardware de procesamiento de sistemas empotrados basados en FPGA mediante hardware evolutivo. Esto se ha abordado considerando que el comportamiento computacional de un sistema puede ser modificado cambiando cualquiera de sus dos partes constitutivas: una estructura hard subyacente y un conjunto de parámetros soft. De esta distinción, se derivan dos lineas de trabajo. Por un lado, auto-adaptación paramétrica, y por otro auto-adaptación estructural. El objetivo perseguido en el caso de la auto-adaptación paramétrica es la implementación de técnicas de optimización evolutiva complejas en sistemas empotrados con recursos limitados para la adaptación paramétrica online de circuitos de procesamiento de señal. La aplicación seleccionada como prueba de concepto es la optimización para tipos muy específicos de imágenes de los coeficientes de los filtros de transformadas wavelet discretas (DWT, DiscreteWavelet Transform), orientada a la compresión de imágenes. Por tanto, el objetivo requerido de la evolución es una compresión adaptativa y más eficiente comparada con los procedimientos estándar. El principal reto radica en reducir la necesidad de recursos de supercomputación para el proceso de optimización propuesto en trabajos previos, de modo que se adecúe para la ejecución en sistemas empotrados. En cuanto a la auto-adaptación estructural, el objetivo de la tesis es la implementación de circuitos auto-adaptativos en sistemas evolutivos basados en FPGA mediante un uso eficiente de sus capacidades de reconfiguración nativas. En este caso, la prueba de concepto es la evolución de tareas de procesamiento de imagen tales como el filtrado de tipos desconocidos y cambiantes de ruido y la detección de bordes en la imagen. En general, el objetivo es la evolución en tiempo de ejecución de tareas de procesamiento de imagen desconocidas en tiempo de diseño (dentro de un cierto grado de complejidad). En este caso, el objetivo de la propuesta es la incorporación de DPR en EHW para evolucionar la arquitectura de un array sistólico adaptable mediante reconfiguración cuya capacidad de evolución no había sido estudiada previamente. Para conseguir los dos objetivos mencionados, esta tesis propone originalmente una plataforma evolutiva que integra un motor de adaptación (AE, Adaptation Engine), un motor de reconfiguración (RE, Reconfiguration Engine) y un motor computacional (CE, Computing Engine) adaptable. El el caso de adaptación paramétrica, la plataforma propuesta está caracterizada por: • un CE caracterizado por un núcleo de procesamiento hardware de DWT adaptable mediante registros reconfigurables que contienen los coeficientes de los filtros wavelet • un algoritmo evolutivo como AE que busca filtros wavelet candidatos a través de un proceso de optimización paramétrica desarrollado específicamente para sistemas caracterizados por recursos de procesamiento limitados • un nuevo operador de mutación simplificado para el algoritmo evolutivo utilizado, que junto con un mecanismo de evaluación rápida de filtros wavelet candidatos derivado de la literatura actual, asegura la viabilidad de la búsqueda evolutiva asociada a la adaptación de wavelets. En el caso de adaptación estructural, la plataforma propuesta toma la forma de: • un CE basado en una plantilla de array sistólico reconfigurable de 2 dimensiones compuesto de nodos de procesamiento reconfigurables • un algoritmo evolutivo como AE que busca configuraciones candidatas del array usando un conjunto de funcionalidades de procesamiento para los nodos disponible en una biblioteca accesible en tiempo de ejecución • un RE hardware que explota la capacidad de reconfiguración nativa de las FPGAs haciendo un uso eficiente de los recursos reconfigurables del dispositivo para cambiar el comportamiento del CE en tiempo de ejecución • una biblioteca de elementos de procesamiento reconfigurables caracterizada por bitstreams parciales independientes de la posición, usados como el conjunto de configuraciones disponibles para los nodos de procesamiento del array Las contribuciones principales de esta tesis se pueden resumir en la siguiente lista: • Una plataforma evolutiva basada en FPGA para la auto-adaptación paramétrica y estructural de sistemas empotrados compuesta por un motor computacional (CE), un motor de adaptación (AE) evolutivo y un motor de reconfiguración (RE). Esta plataforma se ha desarrollado y particularizado para los casos de auto-adaptación paramétrica y estructural. • En cuanto a la auto-adaptación paramétrica, las contribuciones principales son: – Un motor computacional adaptable mediante registros que permite la adaptación paramétrica de los coeficientes de una implementación hardware adaptativa de un núcleo de DWT. – Un motor de adaptación basado en un algoritmo evolutivo desarrollado específicamente para optimización numérica, aplicada a los coeficientes de filtros wavelet en sistemas empotrados con recursos limitados. – Un núcleo IP de DWT auto-adaptativo en tiempo de ejecución para sistemas empotrados que permite la optimización online del rendimiento de la transformada para compresión de imágenes en entornos específicos de despliegue, caracterizados por tipos diferentes de señal de entrada. – Un modelo software y una implementación hardware de una herramienta para la construcción evolutiva automática de transformadas wavelet específicas. • Por último, en cuanto a la auto-adaptación estructural, las contribuciones principales son: – Un motor computacional adaptable mediante reconfiguración nativa de FPGAs caracterizado por una plantilla de array sistólico en dos dimensiones de nodos de procesamiento reconfigurables. Es posible mapear diferentes tareas de cómputo en el array usando una biblioteca de elementos sencillos de procesamiento reconfigurables. – Definición de una biblioteca de elementos de procesamiento apropiada para la síntesis autónoma en tiempo de ejecución de diferentes tareas de procesamiento de imagen. – Incorporación eficiente de la reconfiguración parcial dinámica (DPR) en sistemas de hardware evolutivo, superando los principales inconvenientes de propuestas previas como los circuitos reconfigurables virtuales (VRCs). En este trabajo también se comparan originalmente los detalles de implementación de ambas propuestas. – Una plataforma tolerante a fallos, auto-curativa, que permite la recuperación funcional online en entornos peligrosos. La plataforma ha sido caracterizada desde una perspectiva de tolerancia a fallos: se proponen modelos de fallo a nivel de CLB y de elemento de procesamiento, y usando el motor de reconfiguración, se hace un análisis sistemático de fallos para un fallo en cada elemento de procesamiento y para dos fallos acumulados. – Una plataforma con calidad de filtrado dinámica que permite la adaptación online a tipos de ruido diferentes y diferentes comportamientos computacionales teniendo en cuenta los recursos de procesamiento disponibles. Por un lado, se evolucionan filtros con comportamientos no destructivos, que permiten esquemas de filtrado en cascada escalables; y por otro, también se evolucionan filtros escalables teniendo en cuenta requisitos computacionales de filtrado cambiantes dinámicamente. Este documento está organizado en cuatro partes y nueve capítulos. La primera parte contiene el capítulo 1, una introducción y motivación sobre este trabajo de tesis. A continuación, el marco de referencia en el que se enmarca esta tesis se analiza en la segunda parte: el capítulo 2 contiene una introducción a los conceptos de auto-adaptación y computación autonómica (autonomic computing) como un campo de investigación más general que el muy específico de este trabajo; el capítulo 3 introduce la computación evolutiva como la técnica para dirigir la adaptación; el capítulo 4 analiza las plataformas de computación reconfigurables como la tecnología para albergar hardware auto-adaptativo; y finalmente, el capítulo 5 define, clasifica y hace un sondeo del campo del hardware evolutivo. Seguidamente, la tercera parte de este trabajo contiene la propuesta, desarrollo y resultados obtenidos: mientras que el capítulo 6 contiene una declaración de los objetivos de la tesis y la descripción de la propuesta en su conjunto, los capítulos 7 y 8 abordan la auto-adaptación paramétrica y estructural, respectivamente. Finalmente, el capítulo 9 de la parte 4 concluye el trabajo y describe caminos de investigación futuros. ABSTRACT Embedded systems have traditionally been conceived to be specific-purpose computers with one, fixed computational task for their whole lifetime. Stringent requirements in terms of cost, size and weight forced designers to highly optimise their operation for very specific conditions. However, demands for versatility, more intelligent behaviour and, in summary, an increased computing capability began to clash with these limitations, intensified by the uncertainty associated to the more dynamic operating environments where they were progressively being deployed. This brought as a result an increasing need for systems to respond by themselves to unexpected events at design time, such as: changes in input data characteristics and system environment in general; changes in the computing platform itself, e.g., due to faults and fabrication defects; and changes in functional specifications caused by dynamically changing system objectives. As a consequence, systems complexity is increasing, but in turn, autonomous lifetime adaptation without human intervention is being progressively enabled, allowing them to take their own decisions at run-time. This type of systems is known, in general, as selfadaptive, and are able, among others, of self-configuration, self-optimisation and self-repair. Traditionally, the soft part of a system has mostly been so far the only place to provide systems with some degree of adaptation capabilities. However, the performance to power ratios of software driven devices like microprocessors are not adequate for embedded systems in many situations. In this scenario, the resulting rise in applications complexity is being partly addressed by rising devices complexity in the form of multi and many core devices; but sadly, this keeps on increasing power consumption. Besides, design methodologies have not been improved accordingly to completely leverage the available computational power from all these cores. Altogether, these factors make that the computing demands new applications pose are not being wholly satisfied. The traditional solution to improve performance to power ratios has been the switch to hardware driven specifications, mainly using ASICs. However, their costs are highly prohibitive except for some mass production cases and besidesthe static nature of its structure complicates the solution to the adaptation needs. The advancements in fabrication technologies have made that the once slow, small FPGA used as glue logic in bigger systems, had grown to be a very powerful, reconfigurable computing device with a vast amount of computational logic resources and embedded, hardened signal and general purpose processing cores. Its reconfiguration capabilities have enabled software-like flexibility to be combined with hardware-like computing performance, which has the potential to cause a paradigm shift in computer architecture since hardware cannot be considered as static anymore. This is so, since, as is the case with SRAMbased FPGAs, Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR) is possible. This means that subsets of the FPGA computational resources can now be changed (reconfigured) at run-time while the rest remains active. Besides, this reconfiguration process can be triggered internally by the device itself. This technological boost in reconfigurable hardware devices is actually covered under the field known as Reconfigurable Computing. One of the most exotic fields of application that Reconfigurable Computing has enabled is the known as Evolvable Hardware (EHW), in which this dissertation is framed. The main idea behind the concept is turning hardware that is adaptable through reconfiguration into an evolvable entity subject to the forces of an evolutionary process, inspired by that of natural, biological species, that guides the direction of change. It is yet another application of the field of Evolutionary Computation (EC), which comprises a set of global optimisation algorithms known as Evolutionary Algorithms (EAs), considered as universal problem solvers. In analogy to the biological process of evolution, in EHW the subject of evolution is a population of circuits that tries to get adapted to its surrounding environment by progressively getting better fitted to it generation after generation. Individuals become circuit configurations representing bitstreams that feature reconfigurable circuit descriptions. By selecting those that behave better, i.e., with a higher fitness value after being evaluated, and using them as parents of the following generation, the EA creates a new offspring population by using so called genetic operators like mutation and recombination. As generations succeed one another, the whole population is expected to approach to the optimum solution to the problem of finding an adequate circuit configuration that fulfils system objectives. The state of reconfiguration technology after Xilinx XC6200 FPGA family was discontinued and replaced by Virtex families in the late 90s, was a major obstacle for advancements in EHW; closed (non publicly known) bitstream formats; dependence on manufacturer tools with highly limiting support of DPR; slow speed of reconfiguration; and random bitstream modifications being potentially hazardous for device integrity, are some of these reasons. However, a proposal in the first 2000s allowed to keep investigating in this field while DPR technology kept maturing, the Virtual Reconfigurable Circuit (VRC). In essence, a VRC in an FPGA is a virtual layer acting as an application specific reconfigurable circuit on top of an FPGA fabric that reduces the complexity of the reconfiguration process and increases its speed (compared to native reconfiguration). It is an array of computational nodes specified using standard HDL descriptions that define ad-hoc reconfigurable resources; routing multiplexers and a set of configurable processing elements, each one containing all the required functions, which are selectable through functionality multiplexers as in microprocessor ALUs. A large register acts as configuration memory, so VRC reconfiguration is very fast given it only involves writing this register, which drives the selection signals of the set of multiplexers. However, large overheads are introduced by this virtual layer; an area overhead due to the simultaneous implementation of every function in every node of the array plus the multiplexers, and a delay overhead due to the multiplexers, which also reduces maximum frequency of operation. The very nature of Evolvable Hardware, able to optimise its own computational behaviour, makes it a good candidate to advance research in self-adaptive systems. Combining a selfreconfigurable computing substrate able to be dynamically changed at run-time with an embedded algorithm that provides a direction for change, can help fulfilling requirements for autonomous lifetime adaptation of FPGA-based embedded systems. The main proposal of this thesis is hence directed to contribute to autonomous self-adaptation of the underlying computational hardware of FPGA-based embedded systems by means of Evolvable Hardware. This is tackled by considering that the computational behaviour of a system can be modified by changing any of its two constituent parts: an underlying hard structure and a set of soft parameters. Two main lines of work derive from this distinction. On one side, parametric self-adaptation and, on the other side, structural self-adaptation. The goal pursued in the case of parametric self-adaptation is the implementation of complex evolutionary optimisation techniques in resource constrained embedded systems for online parameter adaptation of signal processing circuits. The application selected as proof of concept is the optimisation of Discrete Wavelet Transforms (DWT) filters coefficients for very specific types of images, oriented to image compression. Hence, adaptive and improved compression efficiency, as compared to standard techniques, is the required goal of evolution. The main quest lies in reducing the supercomputing resources reported in previous works for the optimisation process in order to make it suitable for embedded systems. Regarding structural self-adaptation, the thesis goal is the implementation of self-adaptive circuits in FPGA-based evolvable systems through an efficient use of native reconfiguration capabilities. In this case, evolution of image processing tasks such as filtering of unknown and changing types of noise and edge detection are the selected proofs of concept. In general, evolving unknown image processing behaviours (within a certain complexity range) at design time is the required goal. In this case, the mission of the proposal is the incorporation of DPR in EHW to evolve a systolic array architecture adaptable through reconfiguration whose evolvability had not been previously checked. In order to achieve the two stated goals, this thesis originally proposes an evolvable platform that integrates an Adaptation Engine (AE), a Reconfiguration Engine (RE) and an adaptable Computing Engine (CE). In the case of parametric adaptation, the proposed platform is characterised by: • a CE featuring a DWT hardware processing core adaptable through reconfigurable registers that holds wavelet filters coefficients • an evolutionary algorithm as AE that searches for candidate wavelet filters through a parametric optimisation process specifically developed for systems featured by scarce computing resources • a new, simplified mutation operator for the selected EA, that together with a fast evaluation mechanism of candidate wavelet filters derived from existing literature, assures the feasibility of the evolutionary search involved in wavelets adaptation In the case of structural adaptation, the platform proposal takes the form of: • a CE based on a reconfigurable 2D systolic array template composed of reconfigurable processing nodes • an evolutionary algorithm as AE that searches for candidate configurations of the array using a set of computational functionalities for the nodes available in a run time accessible library • a hardware RE that exploits native DPR capabilities of FPGAs and makes an efficient use of the available reconfigurable resources of the device to change the behaviour of the CE at run time • a library of reconfigurable processing elements featured by position-independent partial bitstreams used as the set of available configurations for the processing nodes of the array Main contributions of this thesis can be summarised in the following list. • An FPGA-based evolvable platform for parametric and structural self-adaptation of embedded systems composed of a Computing Engine, an evolutionary Adaptation Engine and a Reconfiguration Engine. This platform is further developed and tailored for both parametric and structural self-adaptation. • Regarding parametric self-adaptation, main contributions are: – A CE adaptable through reconfigurable registers that enables parametric adaptation of the coefficients of an adaptive hardware implementation of a DWT core. – An AE based on an Evolutionary Algorithm specifically developed for numerical optimisation applied to wavelet filter coefficients in resource constrained embedded systems. – A run-time self-adaptive DWT IP core for embedded systems that allows for online optimisation of transform performance for image compression for specific deployment environments characterised by different types of input signals. – A software model and hardware implementation of a tool for the automatic, evolutionary construction of custom wavelet transforms. • Lastly, regarding structural self-adaptation, main contributions are: – A CE adaptable through native FPGA fabric reconfiguration featured by a two dimensional systolic array template of reconfigurable processing nodes. Different processing behaviours can be automatically mapped in the array by using a library of simple reconfigurable processing elements. – Definition of a library of such processing elements suited for autonomous runtime synthesis of different image processing tasks. – Efficient incorporation of DPR in EHW systems, overcoming main drawbacks from the previous approach of virtual reconfigurable circuits. Implementation details for both approaches are also originally compared in this work. – A fault tolerant, self-healing platform that enables online functional recovery in hazardous environments. The platform has been characterised from a fault tolerance perspective: fault models at FPGA CLB level and processing elements level are proposed, and using the RE, a systematic fault analysis for one fault in every processing element and for two accumulated faults is done. – A dynamic filtering quality platform that permits on-line adaptation to different types of noise and different computing behaviours considering the available computing resources. On one side, non-destructive filters are evolved, enabling scalable cascaded filtering schemes; and on the other, size-scalable filters are also evolved considering dynamically changing computational filtering requirements. This dissertation is organized in four parts and nine chapters. First part contains chapter 1, the introduction to and motivation of this PhD work. Following, the reference framework in which this dissertation is framed is analysed in the second part: chapter 2 features an introduction to the notions of self-adaptation and autonomic computing as a more general research field to the very specific one of this work; chapter 3 introduces evolutionary computation as the technique to drive adaptation; chapter 4 analyses platforms for reconfigurable computing as the technology to hold self-adaptive hardware; and finally chapter 5 defines, classifies and surveys the field of Evolvable Hardware. Third part of the work follows, which contains the proposal, development and results obtained: while chapter 6 contains an statement of the thesis goals and the description of the proposal as a whole, chapters 7 and 8 address parametric and structural self-adaptation, respectively. Finally, chapter 9 in part 4 concludes the work and describes future research paths.
