Species selection for forest restoration is often supported by expert knowledge on local distribution patterns of native tree species. This approach is not applicable to largely deforested regions unless enough data on pre-human tree species distribution is available. In such regions, ecological niche models may provide essential information to support species selection in the framework of forest restoration planning. In this study we used ecological niche models to predict habitat suitability for native tree species in "Tierra de Campos" region, an almost totally deforested area of the Duero Basin (Spain). Previously available models provide habitat suitability predictions for dominant native tree species, but including non-dominant tree species in the forest restoration planning may be desirable to promote biodiversity, specially in largely deforested areas were near seed sources are not expected. We used the Forest Map of Spain as species occurrence data source to maximize the number of modeled tree species. Penalized logistic regression was used to train models using climate and lithological predictors. Using model predictions a set of tools were developed to support species selection in forest restoration planning. Model predictions were used to build ordered lists of suitable species for each cell of the study area. The suitable species lists were summarized drawing maps that showed the two most suitable species for each cell. Additionally, potential distribution maps of the suitable species for the study area were drawn. For a scenario with two dominant species, the models predicted a mixed forest (Quercus ilex and a coniferous tree species) for almost one half of the study area. According to the models, 22 non-dominant native tree species are suitable for the study area, with up to six suitable species per cell. The model predictions pointed to Crataegus monogyna, Juniperus communis, J.oxycedrus and J.phoenicea as the most suitable non-dominant native tree species in the study area. Our results encourage further use of ecological niche models for forest restoration planning in largely deforested regions.

Haití, es un país claramente prioritario como receptor de cooperación para el desarrollo. Tras el terremoto del 12 de enero de 2010, se ha desarrollado un Proyecto de Cooperación Interuniversitaria entre la Universidad del Estado de Haití y la Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, financiado por la Agencia Española de Cooperación Internacional para el Desarrollo.El proyecto consiste en la formación y capacitación de los técnicos Haitianos para reconstruir su país. Se está trabajando en la creación de una escala macrosísmica Haitiana, partiendo como base de la Escala Macrosísmica Europea 1998. En este sentido, se hace un análisis exhaustivo de toda la documentación técnica y científica existente hasta la fecha sobre tipos de edificios, clases de vulnerabilidad y grados de daños dependiendo del tipo de edificio. Como caso de estudio se aplica en la ciudad de Puerto Príncipe.En primer lugar se ha clasificado el parque inmobiliario de Puerto Príncipe en diferentes tipologías constructivas, tras un trabajo de campo y teniendo en cuenta las guías de auto-construcción y reparación de edificios publicadas por el Ministerio de Obras Públicas, Transporte y Comunicaciones de Haití. (MTPTC).En el estudio de la vulnerabilidad, además del tipo de estructura de los edificios, se tiene en cuenta la habitabilidad básica que debe tener todo asentamiento humano, analizando no sólo el edificio, sino todo el entorno externo de espacios públicos, infraestructuras, dotaciones y servicios que, en conjunto,conforman el núcleo de cada población y permiten el funcionamiento eficiente del sistema de asentamientos del territorio habitado; pues, en última instancia, dicho territorio construido es el que mejor acota los riesgos ante la vulnerabilidad material y más garantiza la vida saludable de las personas. Los parámetros estudiados son: urbanísticos (anchos de vías, dimensiones de manzanas, trazado, infraestructuras,...), geológicos (estudios del efecto local e identificación de las fallas activas respecto a la edificación) y topográficos (implantación del edificio en zonas llanas, en laderas...). En último lugar, con todos estos datos y los daños registrados en el terremoto de enero de 2010, se hace una escala de intensidades macrosísmica y un plano de ordenación de la vulnerabilidad en Puerto Príncipe, que sirva de base a las autoridades haitianas para la planificación urbanística y la reconstrucción, mitigando de esta manera el riesgo símico. SUMMARY Haiti is a clear priority country as a recipient of development cooperation. After the earthquake of January 12, 2010, an Inter-University Cooperation Project has been developed between the State University of Haiti and the Polytechnic University of Madrid, funded by the Spanish Agency for International Development.The project consists of training and qualifying Haitian technicians to rebuild their country. We are currently working on the creation of a Haitian Macroseismic Scale,based on the European Macroseismic Scale 1998.For the accomplishment of this goal, a comprehensive (deep) analysis is being held, going through all the scientific and technical documentation to date, related to building types, kinds of vulnerability and degrees/ levels of damage depending on the type of building. As a case study, this has been applied to the city of Port-au-Prince.First of all, we have classified the housing typology of Port-au-Prince in different construction types, after carrying on field work in this area and keeping in mind the guidelines for self-construction and repairment of buildings published by the Ministry of Work, Transport and Communications of Haiti. (MTPTC).Regarding the study of vulnerability, besides the type of structure of the buildings, we take into account the basic habitability every human settlement should have, analyzing not only the building, but all the external environment of public spaces,infrastructures, amenities and services, which, as a whole, shape the core of each population and allow the efficient functioning of the settlement system on the inhabited territory. It is this territory,ultimately, the one that better narrows the risks when facing material vulnerability and that better ensures a healthy life for people. The studied parameters are: urban (lane width, block dimensions, layout, infrastructure...), geological (studies focusing on local effects and identification of the active faults in relation to the building) and topographical (implementation of the building on flat areas, slopes...)Finally, with all this data (information) and the registered damages related to the earthquake occurred in 2010, we create a Macroseismic Intensity Scale and a Management Plan of the vulnerability in Port-au-Prince. They will serve as a guideline for Haitians authorities in the urban planning and reconstruction, thus reducing seismic risk.

La globalización, en las últimas décadas, ha tenido una amplia repercusión e influencia sobre la evolución de los procesos que intervienen en la gestión y la ordenación urbano-territorial. Esta influencia ha sido especialmente destacable en los procesos de conformación de las Ciudades Globales (CG). No obstante, dentro de los procesos actuales, y de los ya iniciados décadas atrás, se encuentran discordancias tanto con respecto a los modelos de gestión urbanoterritoriales como con relación a los procesos de conformación de las CG. Esto es debido a que cada territorio o CG no ha seguido un proceso homogéneo; sino que, a través del modelo empresarial de la “Planificación Estratégica” (PE) cada proceso ha sido adaptado para poder atender y potenciar las características más singulares de cada territorio, y de esta forma, poder alcanzar las ambiciosas posiciones de liderazgo. Por este motivo, el éxito de la PE se ha basado en simplificar la complejidad de los modelos y agentes que participan en los procesos de conformación de los territorios y ciudades globales. En esta investigación se propone analizar el valor de la PE como proceso de gestión y ordenación urbano-territorial; al igual que se pretende esclarecer tanto los modelos como los elementos de los que se compone. Para, poder así, identificar las relaciones que se producen entre los modelos y elementos principales de los que se compone una PE. Por motivos relacionados con la necesaria acotación de toda investigación, y mediante el apoyo de tanto el tutor de esta investigación como de expertos externos consultados, se ha acordado analizar los aspectos más característicos del proceso estratégico, como son: los territoriales, los económicos y los de gobernanza. Esta investigación se ha llevado a cabo a través del uso del método estudio de casos, mediante un proceso de recogida de información compuesto por dos estudios de campo, Singapur y Dubái, con similitudes tanto en el proceso como en los resultados. También se han realizado consultas a expertos multidisciplinares, cuya información y aportaciones se han articulado y procesado mediante la utilización del sistema de análisis de realidades complejas, presentado en el marco conceptual. Los resultados del estudio de los casos de Singapur y de Dubái muestran como las acciones urbano-territoriales que se han llevado a cabo en ambas ciudades y en sus territorios circundantes son consecuencia del uso de la planificación estratégica en beneficio de un mejor posicionamiento dentro del contexto global. De esta forma, mediante el análisis de las asimetrías y de las relaciones existentes entre el proceso, los casos de estudio y el contexto global, se identifica y se esclarece los términos relacionados con las ciudades globales referentes, consolidadas y emergentes. A su vez, a lo largo del marco conceptual se correlaciona y esclarece los procesos territoriales, económicos y de gobernanza, identificando las responsabilidades entre las instituciones, los organismos, los agentes y los actores (tanto públicos como privados) que inician y gestionan tanto el plan estratégico como los procesos derivados de él. Para finalizar, el análisis cruzado de los resultados demuestra la relación existente entre la planificación estratégica, la ordenación urbano-territorial, la gestión económica y la gobernanza. Pudiéndose identifican las asimetrías producidas durante la implantación de un plan estratégico, de forma que, tras un análisis del sistema de realidades complejas, estas asimetrías puedan ser solventadas. RESUMO Nas últimas décadas, a globalização tem tido um grande impacto sobre a evolução dos processos de gestão e planejamento urbano-territorial. Essa influência foi particularmente notável nos processos de formação das cidades globais (CG). No entanto, comparando os processos atuais e aqueles iniciados há décadas, as discrepâncias são encontradas tanto no que diz respeito aos modelos de uso do solo urbano, como em relação aos processos de formação e gestão das CG. Isso ocorre porque cada território ou CG não tem seguido um processo uniforme; mas, por meio do modelo de negócios de "Planejamento Estratégico" (PE) cada processo foi adaptado para servir e melhorar as características mais singulares de cada território para alcançar posições de liderança global. Portanto, o sucesso do PE é baseado na simplificação da complexidade dos modelos e atores envolvidos nos processos de formação dos territórios e das cidades globais. Esta pesquisa tem como objetivo analisar o valor do PE como um processo de gestão territorial e urbana; como também esclarecer os modelos e elementos do PE estudados. Para, então, poder identificar as relações que ocorrem entre os modelos e os principais elementos integrantes de um PE. Como recorte de pesquisa, após consultas com o tutor da pesquisa e com outros pesquisadores especialistas, decidiu-se analisar os aspectos mais característicos do processo estratégico, sendo eles: os territoriais, os econômicos e os de governabilidade. Esta pesquisa ’e um estudo de casos. Para realizá-lo, foram escolhidos dois estudos de campo (Dubai e Cingapura) e além de consultas com especialistas multidisciplinares, cujas informações e colaborações foram analisadas por um sistema de analise de realidades complexas, explicado na parte conceitual dessa tese. Os resultados do estudo dos casos de Dubai e Cingapura mostra como as ações urbanoterritoriais que foram realizadas em ambas cidades e em seus territórios circundantes são resultado do uso do planejamento estratégico em prol de uma melhor localização no contexto global. Assim, através da análise das assimetrias e da relação entre o processo, os estudos de caso e o contexto global, identifica-se e esclarece os termos relacionados com as cidades globais referentes, consolidadas e emergentes. Também, no arcabouço conceitual correlacionase e esclarecem-se os processos econômicos, territoriais e de governabilidade, identificando as responsabilidades das instituições, agências, agentes e atores (públicos e privados), que iniciam e gerenciam tanto o plano estratégico, como os processos derivados. A análise cruzada dos resultados demonstra a relação entre o planejamento estratégico, o planejamento urbano-territorial, a gestão econômica e a governabilidade. A pesquisa é capaz de identificar as assimetrias produzidas durante a implementação de um plano estratégico, para que depois da análise do sistema de realidades complexas, essas assimetrias possam ser resolvidas. ABSTRACT Globalization, in recent decades, has had a wide impact and influence on the evolution of the processes involved in the urban planning management. This influence has been particularly notable in the formation processes for the Global Cities (GC). However, within the current processes, even in those started decades ago, discrepancies are found between the urbanterritorial models and their relation to the processes of formation for the CG. This is because each territory, or CG, has not followed a uniform process; although, each process has been adapted through the business model of the "Strategic Planning" (SP) to serve and enhance the most unique characteristics of each urban territory, until reaching the ambitious global leadership positions. Therefore, the success of SP is based on simplifying the complexity of the models and actors involved in the processes of formation of the GCs and territories. This research aims to analyze the value of SP as a process for the urban and territorial management; intended to clarify both models and elements of which it is composed. And, for so, identify the relationships that occur between them. For reasons related to the required limits of all research, and through the support of this research by both the tutor and the consulted outside experts, has agreed to analyze the most characteristic aspects of the strategic process, which are: territory, economy and governance. This research was conducted through the use of the case study methodology; by a process of information collection of two field studies, Singapore and Dubai, with similarities in both the process and the results; and through consultation with a variety of multidisciplinary experts. Whose information and input has been articulated and processed by the use of a system prepared for the complex analysis of realities presented in the research’s conceptual framework. Thus, analyzing the asymmetries and relationship between the results of the study cases of Singapore and Dubai, have shown how the urban-territorial actions, which have been carried out in both cities and in their surrounding territories, are the result of the use of the strategic planning process for the benefit of a better position with respect to the global context. Meanwhile, along the conceptual framework correlates and clarifies the territorial, economic and governance processes, identifying responsibilities between the institutions, agencies, agents and actors (public and private) that initiate and manage both strategic planning and processes derived from it. Finally, the cross-analysis of the results shows the relationship between strategic planning, urban and territorial planning, economic management and governance. Being able to identify and eliminate the asymmetries produced during the implementation of a strategic planning for the formation of a Global City.

El análisis de las diferentes alternativas en la planificación y diseño de corredores y trazados de carreteras debe basarse en la correcta definición de variables territoriales que sirvan como criterios para la toma de decisión y esto requiere un análisis ambiental preliminar de esas variables de calidad. En España, los estudios de viabilidad de nuevas carreteras y autovías están asociados a una fase del proceso de decisión que se corresponde con el denominado Estudio Informativo, el cual establece condicionantes físicos, ambientales, de uso del suelo y culturales que deben ser considerados en las primeras fases de la definición del trazado de un corredor de carretera. Así, la metodología más frecuente es establecer diferentes niveles de capacidad de acogida del territorio en el área de estudio con el fin de resumir las variables territoriales en mapas temáticos y facilitar el proceso de trazado de las alternativas de corredores de carretera. El paisaje es un factor limitante a tener en cuenta en la planificación y diseño de carreteras y, por tanto, deben buscarse trazados más sostenibles en relación con criterios estéticos y ecológicos del mismo. Pero este factor no es frecuentemente analizado en los Estudios Informativos e incluso, si es considerado, los estudios específicos de la calidad del paisaje (estético y ecológico) y de las formas del terreno no incorporan las recomendaciones de las guías de trazado para evitar o reducir los impactos en el paisaje. Además, los mapas de paisaje que se generan en este tipo de estudios no se corresponden con la escala de desarrollo del Estudio Informativo (1:5.000). Otro déficit común en planificación de corredores y trazados de carreteras es que no se tiene en cuenta la conectividad del paisaje durante el proceso de diseño de la carretera para prevenir la afección a los corredores de fauna existentes en el paisaje. Este déficit puede originar un posterior efecto barrera en los movimientos dispersivos de la fauna y la fragmentación de sus hábitats debido a la ocupación parcial o total de las teselas de hábitats con importancia biológica para la fauna (o hábitats focales) y a la interrupción de los corredores de fauna que concentran esos movimientos dispersivos de la fauna entre teselas. El objetivo principal de esta tesis es mejorar el estudio del paisaje para prevenir su afección durante el proceso de trazado de carreteras, facilitar la conservación de los corredores de fauna (o pasillos verdes) y la localización de medidas preventivas y correctoras en términos de selección y cuantificación de factores de idoneidad a fin de reducir los impactos visuales y ecológicos en el paisaje a escala local. Concretamente, la incorporación de valores cuantitativos y bien justificados en el proceso de decisión permite incrementar la transparencia en el proceso de diseño de corredores y trazados de carreteras. Con este fin, se han planteado cuatro preguntas específicas en esta investigación (1) ¿Cómo se seleccionan y evalúan los factores territoriales limitantes para localizar una nueva carretera por los profesionales españoles de planificación del territorio en relación con el paisaje? (2) ¿Cómo pueden ser definidos los corredores de fauna a partir de factores del paisaje que influyen en los movimientos dispersivos de la fauna? (3) ¿Cómo pueden delimitarse y evaluarse los corredores de fauna incluyendo el comportamiento parcialmente errático en los movimientos dispersivos de la fauna y el efecto barrera de los elementos antrópicos a una escala local? (4) ¿Qué y cómo las recomendaciones de diseño de carreteras relacionadas con el paisaje y las formas del terreno pueden ser incluidas en un modelo de Sistemas de Información Geográfica (SIG) para ayudar a los ingenieros civiles durante el proceso de diseño de un trazado de carreteras bajo el punto de vista de la sostenibilidad?. Esta tesis doctoral propone nuevas metodologías que mejoran el análisis visual y ecológico del paisaje utilizando indicadores y modelos SIG para obtener alternativas de trazado que produzcan un menor impacto en el paisaje. Estas metodologías fueron probadas en un paisaje heterogéneo con una alta tasa de densidad de corzo (Capreolus capreolus L.), uno de los grandes mamíferos más atropellados en la red de carreteras españolas, y donde está planificada la construcción de una nueva autovía que atravesará la mitad del área de distribución del corzo. Inicialmente, se han analizado las variables utilizadas en 22 estudios de proyectos de planificación de corredores de carreteras promovidos por el Ministerio de Fomento entre 2006 y 2008. Estas variables se agruparon según condicionantes físicos, ambientales, de usos del suelo y culturales con el fin de comparar los valores asignados de capacidad de acogida del territorio a cada variable en los diferentes estudios revisados. Posteriormente, y como etapa previa de un análisis de conectividad, se construyó un mapa de resistencia de los movimientos dispersivos del corzo en base a la literatura y al juicio de expertos. Usando esta investigación como base, se le asignó un valor de resistencia a cada factor seleccionado para construir la matriz de resistencia, ponderándolo y combinándolo con el resto de factores usando el proceso analítico jerárquico y los operadores de lógica difusa como métodos de análisis multicriterio. Posteriormente, se diseñó una metodología SIG para delimitar claramente la extensión física de los corredores de fauna de acuerdo a un valor umbral de ancho geométrico mínimo, así como la existencia de múltiples potenciales conexiones entre cada par de teselas de hábitats presentes en el paisaje estudiado. Finalmente, se realizó un procesado de datos Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) y un modelo SIG para calcular la calidad del paisaje (estético y ecológico), las formas del terreno que presentan características similares para trazar una carretera y la acumulación de vistas de potenciales conductores y observadores de los alrededores de la nueva vía. Las principales contribuciones de esta investigación al conocimiento científico existente en el campo de la evaluación del impacto ambiental en relación al diseño de corredores y trazados de carreteras son cuatro. Primero, el análisis realizado de 22 Estudios Informativos de planificación de carreteras reveló que los métodos aplicados por los profesionales para la evaluación de la capacidad de acogida del territorio no fue suficientemente estandarizada, ya que había una falta de uniformidad en el uso de fuentes cartográficas y en las metodologías de evaluación de la capacidad de acogida del territorio, especialmente en el análisis de la calidad del paisaje estético y ecológico. Segundo, el análisis realizado en esta tesis destaca la importancia de los métodos multicriterio para estructurar, combinar y validar factores que limitan los movimientos dispersivos de la fauna en el análisis de conectividad. Tercero, los modelos SIG desarrollados Generador de alternativas de corredores o Generator of Alternative Corridors (GAC) y Eliminador de Corredores Estrechos o Narrow Corridor Eraser (NCE) pueden ser aplicados sistemáticamente y sobre una base científica en análisis de conectividad como una mejora de las herramientas existentes para la comprensión el paisaje como una red compuesta por nodos y enlaces interconectados. Así, ejecutando los modelos GAC y NCE de forma iterativa, pueden obtenerse corredores alternativos con similar probabilidad de ser utilizados por la fauna y sin que éstos presenten cuellos de botella. Cuarto, el caso de estudio llevado a cabo de prediseño de corredores y trazado de una nueva autovía ha sido novedoso incluyendo una clasificación semisupervisada de las formas del terreno, filtrando una nube de puntos LiDAR e incluyendo la nueva geometría 3D de la carretera en el Modelo Digital de Superficie (MDS). El uso combinado del procesamiento de datos LiDAR y de índices y clasificaciones geomorfológicas puede ayudar a los responsables encargados en la toma de decisiones a evaluar qué alternativas de trazado causan el menor impacto en el paisaje, proporciona una visión global de los juicios de valor más aplicados y, en conclusión, define qué medidas de integración paisajística correctoras deben aplicarse y dónde. ABSTRACT The assessment of different alternatives in road-corridor planning and layout design must be based on a number of well-defined territorial variables that serve as decision-making criteria, and this requires a high-quality preliminary environmental analysis of those quality variables. In Spain, feasibility studies for new roads and motorways are associated to a phase of the decision procedure which corresponds with the one known as the Informative Study, which establishes the physical, environmental, land-use and cultural constraints to be considered in the early stages of defining road corridor layouts. The most common methodology is to establish different levels of Territorial Carrying Capacity (TCC) in the study area in order to summarize the territorial variables on thematic maps and facilitate the tracing process of road-corridor layout alternatives. Landscape is a constraint factor that must be considered in road planning and design, and the most sustainable layouts should be sought based on aesthetic and ecological criteria. However this factor is not often analyzed in Informative Studies and even if it is, baseline studies on landscape quality (aesthetic and ecological) and landforms do not usually include the recommendations of road tracing guides designed to avoid or reduce impacts on the landscape. The resolution of the landscape maps produced in this type of studies does not comply with the recommended road design scale (1:5,000) in the regulations for the Informative Study procedure. Another common shortcoming in road planning is that landscape ecological connectivity is not considered during road design in order to avoid affecting wildlife corridors in the landscape. In the prior road planning stage, this issue could lead to a major barrier effect for fauna dispersal movements and to the fragmentation of their habitat due to the partial or total occupation of habitat patches of biological importance for the fauna (or focal habitats), and the interruption of wildlife corridors that concentrate fauna dispersal movements between patches. The main goal of this dissertation is to improve the study of the landscape and prevent negative effects during the road tracing process, and facilitate the preservation of wildlife corridors (or green ways) and the location of preventive and corrective measures by selecting and quantifying suitability factors to reduce visual and ecological landscape impacts at a local scale. Specifically the incorporation of quantitative and well-supported values in the decision-making process provides increased transparency in the road corridors and layouts design process. Four specific questions were raised in this research: (1) How are territorial constraints selected and evaluated in terms of landscape by Spanish land-planning practitioners before locating a new road? (2) How can wildlife corridors be defined based on the landscape factors influencing the dispersal movements of fauna? (3) How can wildlife corridors be delimited and assessed to include the partially erratic movements of fauna and the barrier effect of the anthropic elements at a local scale? (4) How recommendations of road design related to landscape and landforms can be included in a Geographic Information System (GIS) model to aid civil engineers during the road layout design process and support sustainable development? This doctoral thesis proposes new methodologies that improve the assessment of the visual and ecological landscape character using indicators and GIS models to obtain road layout alternatives with a lower impact on the landscape. These methodologies were tested on a case study of a heterogeneous landscape with a high density of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.) –one of the large mammals most commonly hit by vehicles on the Spanish road network– and where a new motorway is planned to pass through the middle of their distribution area. We explored the variables used in 22 road-corridor planning projects sponsored by the Ministry of Public Works between 2006 and 2008. These variables were grouped into physical, environmental, land-use and cultural constraints for the purpose of comparing the TCC values assigned to each variable in the various studies reviewed. As a prior stage in a connectivity analysis, a map of resistance to roe deer dispersal movements was created based on the literature and experts judgment. Using this research as a base, each factor selected to build the matrix was assigned a resistance value and weighted and combined with the rest of the factors using the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy logic operators as multicriteria assessment (MCA) methods. A GIS methodology was designed to clearly delimit the physical area of wildlife corridors according to a geometric threshold width value, and the multiple potential connections between each pair of habitat patches in the landscape. A Digital Surface Model Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) dataset processing and a GIS model was performed to determine landscape quality (aesthetic and ecological) and landforms with similar characteristics for the road layout, and the cumulative viewshed of potential drivers and observers in the area surrounding the new motorway. The main contributions of this research to current scientific knowledge in the field of environmental impact assessment for road corridors and layouts design are four. First, the analysis of 22 Informative Studies on road planning revealed that the methods applied by practitioners for assessing the TCC were not sufficiently standardized due to the lack of uniformity in the cartographic information sources and the TCC valuation methodologies, especially in the analysis of the aesthetic and ecological quality of the landscape. Second, the analysis in this dissertation highlights the importance of multicriteria methods to structure, combine and validate factors that constrain wildlife dispersal movements in the connectivity analysis. Third, the “Generator of Alternative Corridors (GAC)” and “Narrow Corridor Eraser (NCE)” GIS models developed can be applied systematically and on a scientific basis in connectivity analyses to improve existing tools and understand landscape as a network composed of interconnected nodes and links. Thus, alternative corridors with similar probability of use by fauna and without bottlenecks can be obtained by iteratively running GAC and NCE models. Fourth, our case study of new motorway corridors and layouts design innovatively included semi-supervised classification of landforms, filtering of LiDAR point clouds and new 3D road geometry on the Digital Surface Model (DSM). The combined used of LiDAR data processing and geomorphological indices and classifications can help decision-makers assess which road layouts produce lower impacts on the landscape, provide an overall insight into the most commonly applied value judgments, and in conclusion, define which corrective measures should be applied in terms of landscaping, and where.

PURPOSE The decision-making process plays a key role in organizations. Every decision-making process produces a final choice that may or may not prompt action. Recurrently, decision makers find themselves in the dichotomous question of following a traditional sequence decision-making process where the output of a decision is used as the input of the next stage of the decision, or following a joint decision-making approach where several decisions are taken simultaneously. The implication of the decision-making process will impact different players of the organization. The choice of the decision- making approach becomes difficult to find, even with the current literature and practitioners’ knowledge. The pursuit of better ways for making decisions has been a common goal for academics and practitioners. Management scientists use different techniques and approaches to improve different types of decisions. The purpose of this decision is to use the available resources as well as possible (data and techniques) to achieve the objectives of the organization. The developing and applying of models and concepts may be helpful to solve managerial problems faced every day in different companies. As a result of this research different decision models are presented to contribute to the body of knowledge of management science. The first models are focused on the manufacturing industry and the second part of the models on the health care industry. Despite these models being case specific, they serve the purpose of exemplifying that different approaches to the problems and could provide interesting results. Unfortunately, there is no universal recipe that could be applied to all the problems. Furthermore, the same model could deliver good results with certain data and bad results for other data. A framework to analyse the data before selecting the model to be used is presented and tested in the models developed to exemplify the ideas. METHODOLOGY As the first step of the research a systematic literature review on the joint decision is presented, as are the different opinions and suggestions of different scholars. For the next stage of the thesis, the decision-making process of more than 50 companies was analysed in companies from different sectors in the production planning area at the Job Shop level. The data was obtained using surveys and face-to-face interviews. The following part of the research into the decision-making process was held in two application fields that are highly relevant for our society; manufacturing and health care. The first step was to study the interactions and develop a mathematical model for the replenishment of the car assembly where the problem of “Vehicle routing problem and Inventory” were combined. The next step was to add the scheduling or car production (car sequencing) decision and use some metaheuristics such as ant colony and genetic algorithms to measure if the behaviour is kept up with different case size problems. A similar approach is presented in a production of semiconductors and aviation parts, where a hoist has to change from one station to another to deal with the work, and a jobs schedule has to be done. However, for this problem simulation was used for experimentation. In parallel, the scheduling of operating rooms was studied. Surgeries were allocated to surgeons and the scheduling of operating rooms was analysed. The first part of the research was done in a Teaching hospital, and for the second part the interaction of uncertainty was added. Once the previous problem had been analysed a general framework to characterize the instance was built. In the final chapter a general conclusion is presented. FINDINGS AND PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS The first part of the contributions is an update of the decision-making literature review. Also an analysis of the possible savings resulting from a change in the decision process is made. Then, the results of the survey, which present a lack of consistency between what the managers believe and the reality of the integration of their decisions. In the next stage of the thesis, a contribution to the body of knowledge of the operation research, with the joint solution of the replenishment, sequencing and inventory problem in the assembly line is made, together with a parallel work with the operating rooms scheduling where different solutions approaches are presented. In addition to the contribution of the solving methods, with the use of different techniques, the main contribution is the framework that is proposed to pre-evaluate the problem before thinking of the techniques to solve it. However, there is no straightforward answer as to whether it is better to have joint or sequential solutions. Following the proposed framework with the evaluation of factors such as the flexibility of the answer, the number of actors, and the tightness of the data, give us important hints as to the most suitable direction to take to tackle the problem. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS AND AVENUES FOR FUTURE RESEARCH In the first part of the work it was really complicated to calculate the possible savings of different projects, since in many papers these quantities are not reported or the impact is based on non-quantifiable benefits. The other issue is the confidentiality of many projects where the data cannot be presented. For the car assembly line problem more computational power would allow us to solve bigger instances. For the operation research problem there was a lack of historical data to perform a parallel analysis in the teaching hospital. In order to keep testing the decision framework it is necessary to keep applying more case studies in order to generalize the results and make them more evident and less ambiguous. The health care field offers great opportunities since despite the recent awareness of the need to improve the decision-making process there are many opportunities to improve. Another big difference with the automotive industry is that the last improvements are not spread among all the actors. Therefore, in the future this research will focus more on the collaboration between academia and the health care sector.

La Educación Física se muestra, a priori, como un área idónea para trabajar intervenciones educativas para facilitar la inclusión de alumnos con discapacidad. Sin embargo, poco se conoce sobre el potencial que presentan los deportes adaptados y paralímpicos como contenido para fomentar la sensibilización y concienciación del alumnado sin discapacidad, especialmente en situaciones inclusivas de práctica. Por otro lado, la actitud del docente y su formación se presentan como claves en este contexto, ya que es quien en última instancia selecciona los contenidos a trabajar. Entendemos que en EF disponemos de una ocasión única en el curriculum para fomentar la participación activa y efectiva del alumno con discapacidad en clase (especialmente a nivel de desarrollo de la competencia motriz, entre otras), si bien esto depende de factores relacionados con los dos agentes anteriores. Es por todo ello que la Educación Física, como protagonista y como contenido, se muestra como un contexto adecuado para la investigación de los procesos de inclusión de alumnos con discapacidad en el ámbito educativo. Este trabajo de investigación pretende arrojar luz a los interrogantes que condicionan y limitan este contexto, desde una perspectiva multidisciplinar, con distintas metodologías, sobre los tres agentes indicados. La falta de consenso en la literatura en cuanto a las características y tipo de intervenciones eficaces para facilitar esta sensibilización del alumnado, unido a que es un ámbito relativamente reciente como tema de investigación, nos ha impulsado a trabajar en esta línea. El primer objetivo de este trabajo de investigación fue diseñar e implementar un programa de sensibilización y concienciación hacia la discapacidad basado en los deportes adaptados en el área de Educación Física para alumnos de secundaria y bachillerato. Inicialmente, se realizó una búsqueda bibliográfica tanto a nivel nacional como internacional, con el fin de definir las características principales que aporta la literatura científica en este aspecto. Apoyándonos por un lado, en el programa educativo Paralympic School Day (CPI, 2004) y por otro, en la citada revisión, desarrollamos un planteamiento inicial de estructura y fases. Dicho proyecto, fue presentado al Comité Paralímpico Español y a las federaciones deportivas españolas para personas con discapacidad, con la finalidad de recabar su apoyo institucional en forma de aval y recursos no solo a nivel económico sino también como apoyo logístico y de difusión. Tras su aprobación y gracias también al apoyo de la UPM, la Fundación Sanitas y Liberty Seguros, se procedió a diseñar el programa. Para el desarrollo de los materiales didácticos se contactó con expertos en la materia de EF y Actividad Física Adaptada tanto del ámbito educativo (profesores de educación secundaria y profesorado universitario) como del deportivo a nivel nacional. A su vez, se comenzó a difundir entre el profesorado de los centros con el fin de detectar su interés en participar durante el curso académico (2012-2013) en el programa “Deporte Inclusivo en la Escuela”. Con la finalización del desarrollo de los materiales didácticos, se visitó a los centros educativos para presentar el dossier informativo donde se explicaba el programa, así como las características y fases para su implementación. El programa está fundamentado en la Teoría del Contacto (Allport, 1954) y basado en los deportes adaptados y paralímpicos, planteado con una metodología inclusiva, seleccionando la información, la simulación y el contacto directo como estrategias para el fomento de la sensibilización y concienciación hacia la inclusión. En la reunión celebrada en la Facultad de Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte (INEF-UPM) en febrero de 2013, se coordinó junto con el profesorado la implementación del programa en cada uno de los 13 centros educativos, con acciones concretas como la adecuación de la propuesta didáctica en la planificación anual del profesor, el préstamo de material o la ponencia del deportista paralímpico entre otras cuestiones. Para la consecución del objetivo 2 de este trabajo, analizar el efecto del programa en los distintos agentes implicados en el mismo, alumnos sin discapacidad, profesorado de EF y alumnos con discapacidad, se calendarizó la toma de datos y la administración de las diferentes herramientas metodológicas para antes (pretest) como después de la intervención (posttets). En el caso de los alumnos sin discapacidad (N= 1068), se analizó el efecto de la intervención sobre la actitud hacia la inclusión, utilizando el cuestionario “Children Attitude Integrated Physical Education-Revised” (CAIPE-R; Block, 1995) de carácter cuantitativo tras su validación y adaptación al contexto español. Los resultados mostraron cambios significativos positivos en la actitud el grupo que mantuvo un contacto no estructurado con alumnos con discapacidad. En esta muestra también se midió la actitud hacia el juego cooperativo con compañeros con discapacidad en clases de EF usando el cuestionario “Children's Beliefs Toward Cooperative Playing With Peers With Disabilities in Physical Education” (CBIPPD-MPE; Obrusnikova, Block, y Dillon, 2010). El desarrollo de un sistema de categorías fundamentado en la Teoría del Comportamiento Planificado (Azjen, 1991) sirvió como base para el análisis de las creencias del alumnado sin discapacidad. Tras la intervención, las creencias conductuales emergentes se mantuvieron, excepto en el caso de los factores identificados como obstáculos de la inclusión. En el caso de las creencias normativas también se mantuvieron tras la intervención y respecto a las creencias de control, los alumnos identificaron al profesor como principal agente facilitador de la inclusión. En el caso de los profesores de EF participantes en el programa (N=18), se analizó el efecto del programa en su actitud hacia la inclusión de alumnos con discapacidad en EF con el cuestionario “Attitud toward inclusion of individual with physical disabilities in Physical Education” (ATISDPE-R; Kudláèek, Válková, Sherrill, Myers, y French, 2002). Los resultados mostraron que no se produjeron diferencias significativas tras la intervención en la actitud general, encontrando algunas diferencias en determinados ítems relacionados con los beneficios de la inclusión en los alumnos sin discapacidad relacionados con los docentes con experiencia previa con discapacidad y en EF antes de la intervención. La otra dimensión analizada fue el efecto de la intervención en la autoeficacia del profesor en la enseñanza de la EF en condiciones inclusivas, habiendo utilizado el cuestionario "Self-efficacy in teaching PE under inclusive conditions" (SEIPE; Hutzler, Zach, y Gafni, 2005). Los resultados en este caso muestran diferencias significativas positivas en cuestiones relacionadas como sentirse capaces de mejorar las condiciones óptimas de enseñanza con alumnos con discapacidad física como movilidad reducida severa y amputación y discapacidad visual tanto en situaciones deportivas, como juegos o actividades fuera del centro educativo a favor de los docentes. En cuanto al género, los hombres obtuvieron valores superiores a las mujeres en relación a sentirse más capaces de incluir a alumnos con discapacidad física tanto en juegos durante el recreo como en la enseñanza de técnica deportiva. Los profesores con menos de 10 años de docencia mostraron valores más positivos en cuanto a sentirse capaces de incluir a un alumno con discapacidad fisica en deportes durante su tiempo libre. El análisis del diario del profesor muestra por un lado, las tendencias emergentes como principales elementos facilitadores u obstaculizadores de la inclusión en EF, identificando al propio alumno sin discapacidad, el propio profesor, los contenidos, los materiales y la organización. Por otro lado, el análisis de los contenidos propuestos en el programa. En el caso de los alumnos con discapacidad (N=22), se analizó el impacto del programa de intervención en el autoconcepto, con el cuestionario "Autoconcepto forma 5" (AF5; F. García y Musitu, 2001). Se encontraron diferencias significativas a favor de las mujeres antes de la intervención en la dimensión familiar, mientras que los hombres obtuvieron valores más altos en las dimensiones social y físico. En cuanto a la edad, se encontraron diferencias significativas antes de la intervención, con valores superiores en los alumnos más jóvenes (12-14 años) en la dimensión físico, mientras que los alumnos mayores (15-17 años) mostraron valores más altos en la dimensión social del cuestionario. Respeto al tipo de discapacidad, los alumnos con discapacidad motórica mostraron mejores valores que los que tienen discapacidad auditiva para la dimensión físico antes de la intervención. En cuanto al autoconcepto general, las diferencias significativas positivas se producen en la dimensión académica. En cuanto al efecto del programa en la autoestima de los alumnos con discapacidad, se utilizó la Escala de "Autoestima de Rosenberg" (Rosenberg, 1989), no obteniendo diferencias significativas en cuanto el género. Apareciendo diferencias significativas antes de la intervención en el caso de la variable edad en los alumnos más jóvenes, en cuanto a que desearían valorarse más, y en los alumnos con discapacidad auditiva en que no se sienten muy orgullosos de ellos mismos. Se produce una mejora en la autoestima general en cuanto a que se sienten menos inútiles tras la intervención. En relación al objetivo 3 de este trabajo, tras el análisis de los resultados y haber discutido los mismos con los autores de referencia, emergió la propuesta de orientaciones tanto para los programa de intervención en EF para la sensibilización y concienciación del alumnado hacia la inclusión como de cara a la formación específica del profesorado, como clave en este tipo de intervenciones. Creemos que el programa “Deporte Inclusivo Escuela” se convierte en un elemento transformador de la realidad, ya que responde a las necesidades detectadas a la luz de esta investigación y que vienen a dar respuesta a los distintos agentes implicados en su desarrollo. Por un lado, atiende la demanda del ámbito educativo en cuanto a las necesidades de formación del profesorado, sensibilización y concienciación del alumnado sin discapacidad, además de facilitar oportunidades de participación activa al alumno con discapacidad en las sesiones de EF. Por otro lado, satisface la demanda por parte de las instituciones deportivas del ámbito de la discapacidad en cuanto a la promoción y difusión de los deportes adaptados y paralímpicos. Por último, desde el ámbito universitario, se muestra como un recurso en la formación del alumnado del grado en Ciencias de la Actividad Física y del Deporte, por su participación directa con la discapacidad. Por estos motivos, este trabajo se muestra como un punto de partida adecuado para seguir avanzando en la investigación en esta área. ABSTRACT Physical Education (PE) seems a priori, as a suitable area to work educational interventions to facilitate the inclusion of students with disabilities. However, little is known about the potential that have adapted and Paralympic sports as content to raise awareness of students without disabilities, especially in inclusive practice context. On the other hand, teachers’ attitude and their training are presented as key in this context because it is who selects the content to work. We understand that PE have a unique opportunity in the curriculum to encourage active and effective participation of students with disabilities in class (especially at motor competence development, etc.), although this depends on factors related to the two agents. For these reasons that the PE, as actors and as content is displayed as a context for investigating the processes of inclusion of students with disabilities in education. This research aims to shed light on the questions that condition and limit this context, from a multidisciplinary perspective, with different methodologies on the three agents mentioned. The lack of accord in the literature regarding the characteristics and type of effective facilitators of awareness of students, and that is a new area as a research topic, has prompted us to work in this topic research. The first aim of this research was to design and implement a program of awareness towards disability based on adapted sports in the area of physical education for middle and high school students. Initially, a literature search was performed both nationally and internationally, in order to define the main features that brings the scientific literature in this area. On the one hand, we supported in the Paralympic School Day (IPC, 2004) educative program and on the other hand, in that review, we developed an initial approach to structure and phases. The project was presented to the Spanish Paralympic Committee and the Spanish Sports Federations for people with disabilities, in order to obtain institutional support in the form of guarantees and resources not only in economic terms but also as logistical support and dissemination. Thanks to the support of Fundación Sanitas, Liberty Seguros and Politechnical University of Madrid, we proceeded to design the program. For the development of teaching resources it was contacted experts in the field of Adapted Physical Activity and physical education and both the field of education (high school teachers and university professors) as the adapted sport national. In turn, it began to spread among the teachers of the schools in order to identify their interest in participating in the academic year (2012-2013) in the "Inclusive Sport in School" program. With the completion of the development of educational materials to schools he was visited to present the briefing where the program, as well as features and steps for its implementation are explained. The program is based on the Contact Theory (Allport, 1954) and based on adapted and Paralympic sports, raised with an inclusive approach, selecting strategies for promoting awareness and awareness to inclusion like information, contact and simulation of disability. For students without disabilities (N= 1068), the effect of the intervention on the attitude towards inclusion was analyzed, using the quantitative questionnaire "Integrated Physical Education Attitude Children-Revised" (CAIPE-R; Block, 1995), after validation and adaptation to the Spanish context. The results showed significant positive changes in the attitude of the group with no structured contact with students with disabilities. This shows the beliefs towards the cooperative play was with peers with disabilities in PE classes also measured, using the questionnaire "Children's Beliefs Toward Cooperative Playing With Peers With Disabilities in Physical Education" (CBIPPD-MPE; Obrusnikova, Block, and Dillon, 2010). The development of a system of categories based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (Azjen, 1991) served as the basis for analysis of the beliefs of students without disabilities. After surgery, emerging behavioral beliefs remained, except in the case of the factors identified as barriers to inclusion. In the case of normative beliefs also they remained after surgery and regarding control beliefs, students identified the teacher as the main facilitator of inclusion. Regarding PE teachers participating in the program (N = 18), the effect of the program was analyzed their attitude toward inclusion of students with disability in PE with the questionnaire "Toward Attitude inclusion of Individual with in Physical Education "(ATISDPE-R; Kudláèek, Válková, Sherrill, Myers, and French, 2002). The results showed no significant difference occurred after surgery in the general attitude, finding some differences in certain related benefits of inclusion in students without disability relating to teachers with previous experience with disability in PE before intervention. The other dimension was analyzed the effect of the intervention on self-efficacy of teachers in the teaching of PE in inclusive terms, having used the questionnaire "Self-efficacy in PE teaching even under conditions" (SEIPE; Hutzler, Zach, and Gafni, 2005). The results showed significant differences positive in issues like being able to enhance the optimal conditions for teaching students with physical disabilities as amputation and severe visual impairment in both sports situations, such as games or activities outside the school to for teachers. Regard to gender, men earned higher values regarding women about feel more able to include students with physical disabilities in both games during recess and teaching sports technique. Teachers with less than 10 years of teaching showed more positive values as you feel able to include a student with physical disabilities in sports during their leisure time. The analysis of daily teacher shows on the one hand, emerging trends as key facilitators or barrier of the inclusion elements in PE, identifying the students without disabilities themselves, the professor, contents, materials and organization. Furthermore, the analysis of daily teacher about the contents proposed in the program. In the case of students with disabilities (N=22), the impact of the intervention program on self-concept was analyzed, with the questionnaire "Self-concept form 5" (AF5, F. Garcia and Musitu, 2001). The women showed significant differences before the intervention in family dimension, while men scored higher values in the social and physical dimensions were found. In terms of age, significant differences were found before the intervention, with higher values in younger students (12-14 years) in the physical dimension, while older children (15-17 years) showed higher values the social dimension of the questionnaire. Respect disabilities, students with motor disabilities showed better values than those with hearing impairment to the physical dimension before surgery. As for the general self-concept, positive significant differences occur in the academic dimension. As for the effect of the program on self-esteem of students with disabilities Scale "Rosenberg Self-Esteem" (Rosenberg, 1989) was used, not getting significant differences in gender. Only appear significant difference before the intervention in the case of younger students as they wish to be valued more, and students with hearing disabilities who do not feel very proud of themselves. Improved self-esteem generally occurs in that they feel less useless after surgery. With regard to the aim 3 of this research, after analyzing the results and have discussed them with the authors, it emerged the proposal of guidelines for both intervention program EF for sensitization and awareness of students towards inclusion as in the face of specific training for teachers, as key in such interventions. We believe that "Inclusive Sport Schools" program becomes a transforming element of reality, as it responds to the needs identified in the light of this research and come to respond to the various elements involved in its development. On the one hand, it meets the demand of the education sector in terms of the needs of teacher training, awareness of students without disability, and facilitates opportunities for students with disabilities for active participation in PE class. On the other hand, it meets the demand of sports institutions in the field of disability regarding the promotion and dissemination of adapted and Paralympic sports. Finally, it is shown as a resource from the university level for the training of degree in Physical Activity and Sport Science students, by its direct involvement with disability. For these reasons, this work is shown as a good starting point to further advance research in this area.

Resumo Em resposta aos desafios atuais de muitas grandes cidades, o contexto institucional e o planeamento territorial formam dimensões para melhorar a governação metropolitana. No quadro das regiões capitais do sudoeste europeu, quais poderão ser as inovações e diferenças nos seus modelos e processos em curso? Este artigo propõe uma investigação aplicada para apresentar a análise da governação metropolitana. Através do método de estudos de caso em perspectiva comparada, vários elementos e entrevistas são ponderados qualitativamente nas regiões de Madrid, Barcelona, Paris e Lisboa. As conclusões encontram uma tendência para o equilíbrio entre os esforços dessas duas dimensões da governação territorial metropolitana, não impedindo registrar os seus diferentes percursos: por exemplo Ile-de-France desenvolveu boas iniciativas em matéria de planeamento, que então pedem alguns ajustamentos no quadro político, enquanto Madrid teve “menos actividade” nos últimos anos, em resultado da sua grande estabilidade institucional. A região de Lisboa permanece talvez numa “posição intermédia”, com uma dinâmica de evolução pouco previsível. Mas de acordo com este argumento, admite-se que os seus processos podem levar a melhorias graduais no sistema de governação, com o seu próprio percurso, implementando acções que devem respeitar, em particular, a geografia do território. Abstract Addressing the running challenges of several greater cities, the institutional mark and regional planning are dimensions for improving metropolitan governance. Regarding the southwest European capital regions, what can be the innovations and differences in their currently processes and models? This paper proposes an applied framework to present the metropolitan governance analysis. Through a comparative case study methodology, various elements and interviews are qualitatively measured in the regions of Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and Lisbon. The conclusions find a tendency to balance between the efforts on those two regional metropolitan governance dimensions, which does not prevent to register their different paths: for example Ile-de-France has developed good initiatives in terms of planning, which then require some adjustments in the political mark, while Madrid had in recent years “less activity”, in result of his institutional stability. The Lisbon region maybe stays in an “intermediate position” with a dynamic evolution that is difficult to predict. But according to that argument, it’s possible to admit that his processes can gradually lead to small improvements in his governance system, with his own path, implementing actions that must respect, in particularly, the geography of the territory.

La planificación pre-operatoria se ha convertido en una tarea esencial en cirugías y terapias de marcada complejidad, especialmente aquellas relacionadas con órgano blando. Un ejemplo donde la planificación preoperatoria tiene gran interés es la cirugía hepática. Dicha planificación comprende la detección e identificación precisa de las lesiones individuales y vasos así como la correcta segmentación y estimación volumétrica del hígado funcional. Este proceso es muy importante porque determina tanto si el paciente es un candidato adecuado para terapia quirúrgica como la definición del abordaje a seguir en el procedimiento. La radioterapia de órgano blando es un segundo ejemplo donde la planificación se requiere tanto para la radioterapia externa convencional como para la radioterapia intraoperatoria. La planificación comprende la segmentación de tumor y órganos vulnerables y la estimación de la dosimetría. La segmentación de hígado funcional y la estimación volumétrica para planificación de la cirugía se estiman habitualmente a partir de imágenes de tomografía computarizada (TC). De igual modo, en la planificación de radioterapia, los objetivos de la radiación se delinean normalmente sobre TC. Sin embargo, los avances en las tecnologías de imagen de resonancia magnética (RM) están ofreciendo progresivamente ventajas adicionales. Por ejemplo, se ha visto que el ratio de detección de metástasis hepáticas es significativamente superior en RM con contraste Gd–EOB–DTPA que en TC. Por tanto, recientes estudios han destacado la importancia de combinar la información de TC y RM para conseguir el mayor nivel posible de precisión en radioterapia y para facilitar una descripción precisa de las lesiones del hígado. Con el objetivo de mejorar la planificación preoperatoria en ambos escenarios se precisa claramente de un algoritmo de registro no rígido de imagen. Sin embargo, la gran mayoría de sistemas comerciales solo proporcionan métodos de registro rígido. Las medidas de intensidad de voxel han demostrado ser criterios de similitud de imágenes robustos, y, entre ellas, la Información Mutua (IM) es siempre la primera elegida en registros multimodales. Sin embargo, uno de los principales problemas de la IM es la ausencia de información espacial y la asunción de que las relaciones estadísticas entre las imágenes son homogéneas a lo largo de su domino completo. La hipótesis de esta tesis es que la incorporación de información espacial de órganos al proceso de registro puede mejorar la robustez y calidad del mismo, beneficiándose de la disponibilidad de las segmentaciones clínicas. En este trabajo, se propone y valida un esquema de registro multimodal no rígido 3D usando una nueva métrica llamada Información Mutua Centrada en el Órgano (Organ-Focused Mutual Information metric (OF-MI)) y se compara con la formulación clásica de la Información Mutua. Esto permite mejorar los resultados del registro en áreas problemáticas incorporando información regional al criterio de similitud, beneficiándose de la disponibilidad real de segmentaciones en protocolos estándares clínicos, y permitiendo que la dependencia estadística entre las dos modalidades de imagen difiera entre órganos o regiones. El método propuesto se ha aplicado al registro de TC y RM con contraste Gd–EOB–DTPA así como al registro de imágenes de TC y MR para planificación de radioterapia intraoperatoria rectal. Adicionalmente, se ha desarrollado un algoritmo de apoyo de segmentación 3D basado en Level-Sets para la incorporación de la información de órgano en el registro. El algoritmo de segmentación se ha diseñado específicamente para la estimación volumétrica de hígado sano funcional y ha demostrado un buen funcionamiento en un conjunto de imágenes de TC abdominales. Los resultados muestran una mejora estadísticamente significativa de OF-MI comparada con la Información Mutua clásica en las medidas de calidad de los registros; tanto con datos simulados (p<0.001) como con datos reales en registro hepático de TC y RM con contraste Gd– EOB–DTPA y en registro para planificación de radioterapia rectal usando OF-MI multi-órgano (p<0.05). Adicionalmente, OF-MI presenta resultados más estables con menor dispersión que la Información Mutua y un comportamiento más robusto con respecto a cambios en la relación señal-ruido y a la variación de parámetros. La métrica OF-MI propuesta en esta tesis presenta siempre igual o mayor precisión que la clásica Información Mutua y consecuentemente puede ser una muy buena alternativa en aplicaciones donde la robustez del método y la facilidad en la elección de parámetros sean particularmente importantes. Abstract Pre-operative planning has become an essential task in complex surgeries and therapies, especially for those affecting soft tissue. One example where soft tissue preoperative planning is of high interest is liver surgery. It involves the accurate detection and identification of individual liver lesions and vessels as well as the proper functional liver segmentation and volume estimation. This process is very important because it determines whether the patient is a suitable candidate for surgical therapy and the type of procedure. Soft tissue radiation therapy is a second example where planning is required for both conventional external and intraoperative radiotherapy. It involves the segmentation of the tumor target and vulnerable organs and the estimation of the planned dose. Functional liver segmentations and volume estimations for surgery planning are commonly estimated from computed tomography (CT) images. Similarly, in radiation therapy planning, targets to be irradiated and healthy and vulnerable tissues to be protected from irradiation are commonly delineated on CT scans. However, developments in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology are progressively offering advantages. For instance, the hepatic metastasis detection rate has been found to be significantly higher in Gd–EOB–DTPAenhanced MRI than in CT. Therefore, recent studies highlight the importance of combining the information from CT and MRI to achieve the highest level of accuracy in radiotherapy and to facilitate accurate liver lesion description. In order to improve those two soft tissue pre operative planning scenarios, an accurate nonrigid image registration algorithm is clearly required. However, the vast majority of commercial systems only provide rigid registration. Voxel intensity measures have been shown to be robust measures of image similarity, and among them, Mutual Information (MI) is always the first candidate in multimodal registrations. However, one of the main drawbacks of Mutual Information is the absence of spatial information and the assumption that statistical relationships between images are the same over the whole domain of the image. The hypothesis of the present thesis is that incorporating spatial organ information into the registration process may improve the registration robustness and quality, taking advantage of the clinical segmentations availability. In this work, a multimodal nonrigid 3D registration framework using a new Organ- Focused Mutual Information metric (OF-MI) is proposed, validated and compared to the classical formulation of the Mutual Information (MI). It allows improving registration results in problematic areas by adding regional information into the similitude criterion taking advantage of actual segmentations availability in standard clinical protocols and allowing the statistical dependence between the two modalities differ among organs or regions. The proposed method is applied to CT and T1 weighted delayed Gd–EOB–DTPA-enhanced MRI registration as well as to register CT and MRI images in rectal intraoperative radiotherapy planning. Additionally, a 3D support segmentation algorithm based on Level-Sets has been developed for the incorporation of the organ information into the registration. The segmentation algorithm has been specifically designed for the healthy and functional liver volume estimation demonstrating good performance in a set of abdominal CT studies. Results show a statistical significant improvement of registration quality measures with OF-MI compared to MI with both simulated data (p<0.001) and real data in liver applications registering CT and Gd–EOB–DTPA-enhanced MRI and in registration for rectal radiotherapy planning using multi-organ OF-MI (p<0.05). Additionally, OF-MI presents more stable results with smaller dispersion than MI and a more robust behavior with respect to SNR changes and parameters variation. The proposed OF-MI always presents equal or better accuracy than the classical MI and consequently can be a very convenient alternative within applications where the robustness of the method and the facility to choose the parameters are particularly important.

Data mining, and in particular decision trees have been used in different fields: engineering, medicine, banking and finance, etc., to analyze a target variable through decision variables. The following article examines the use of the decision trees algorithm as a tool in territorial logistic planning. The decision tree built has estimated population density indexes for territorial units with similar logistics characteristics in a concise and practical way.

In the area of the professional competition, the coach is a fundamental part in the management of a team and more concretely in the game planning. During the competition, the management of the times of pause and times out as well as the conduct of the coach during the same ones is an aspect to analyze in the sports performance. It is for this that it becomes necessary to know some of the behaviors that turn out to be more frequent by the coach and that are more related to a positive performance of his players. For it there has been realized a study of 7 cases of expert coaches in those that his verbal behavior has observed during 4 games. It has focused on the content of the information only to verbal level, on his meaning. The information that have been obtained in the study shows a major quantity of information elaborated during the pauses of the games and a major tactical content with regard to the moments of game. On the other hand, a relation exists between a major number of questions and a minor number of psychological instructions when the score is adverse, whereas in case of victory, a direct relation does not exist with any category. The rest of categories of the speech do not meet influenced directly for the result, for what it is not possible to consider a direct and immediate relation between the coach verbal behavior during the pauses and the result of the game, except in punctual moments.

Global demand for mobility is increasing and the environmental impact of transport has become an important issue in transportation network planning and decision-making, as well as in the operational management phase. Suitable methods are required to assess emissions and fuel consumption reduction strategies that seek to improve energy efficiency and furthering decarbonization. This study describes the development and application of an improved modeling framework – the HERA (Highway EneRgy Assessment) methodology – that enables to assess the energy and carbon footprint of different highways and traffic flow scenarios and their comparison. HERA incorporates an average speed consumption model adjusted with a correction factor which takes into account the road gradient. It provides a more comprehensive method for estimating the footprint of particular highway segments under specific traffic conditions. It includes the application of the methodology to the Spanish highway network to validate it. Finally, a case study shows the benefits from using this methodology and how to integrate the objective of carbon footprint reductions into highway design, operation and scenario comparison.

Planning and Comunity Development: Case Studies, presents the findings of the inter-university Seminar held on 28?29 July 2011 and organized by researchers from the Technical University of Madrid and the University of California, Berkeley, who were fortunate to have the presence of the renowned Professor John Friedmann. Professors, researchers and PhD students from our research groups presented their works as scientific communications that were enriched by the debate among the different researches who attended the Seminar. All of them appear in the picture below in front of the gate of Haviland Hall at UC Berkeley. This book analyses the concept of planning and its evolution so far, leading to the conceptualization of governance as an expression of the planning practice. It also studies the role of social capital and cooperation as tools for the community development. The conceptual analysis is complemented by the development of six case studies that put forward experiences of planning and community development carried out in diverse social and cultural contexts of Latin-America, Europe and North America. This publication comes after more than 20 years of work of the researchers that met at the seminar. Through their work in managing development initiatives, they have learned lessons and have contribute to shape their own body of teaching that develops and analyses the role of planning in public domain to promote community development. This knowledge is synthesized in the model Planning as Working With People, that shows that development is not effective unless is promoted in continuous collaboration with all the actors involved in the process.

This is how, there has been an evolution of school principals¿ professional profile from an administrative to a management approach, in which principals have become project managers of educational projects. From a competence model for school leaders, based on IPMA guidelines, the present article presents an analysis of best practices for school management, allowing to generate a link between competencies and school management, from the perspective of project management. Results showed that the different competence elements, have relative weights according to the different practice fields, and that this analysis can be considered as a strategic element in educational project planning and development.

La edificación es un sector de enorme influencia en la evolución del consumo de energía y las emisiones de CO2. Teniendo en cuenta que en estos momentos hay 3,5 millones de viviendas vacías y que los próximos años no va a haber un aumento en la demanda de vivienda nueva, la rehabilitación sostenible del parque residencial existente es una tarea prioritaria y sobre la que hay que prestar especial interés. Dado que aún queda mucho donde actuar, es necesario hacer una reflexión sobre cómo se está rehabilitando para poder mejorar en el futuro. Por ello, el objetivo del presente trabajo es analizar algunas estrategias adoptadas hasta ahora en el parque inmobiliario y su aplicación en un caso de estudio, mediante la mejora de la fachada de un edificio de viviendas situado en Madrid.
