Incorporation of fiber in cereals may lead to quality issues, thus decreasing consumer acceptance. This is partially due to deterioration of the microstructure, one of the primary quality attributes of cereals. The objective of this study was to better understand the mechanisms by which dietary fibers affect the quality of cereal products during extrusioncooking. The study quantified the effect of amount and type of fiber and whole grain on (i) texture, (ii) structure, and (iii) rehydration properties of extruded cereals. New innovative methods were applied and combined with traditional techniques to characterize both the structure and the rehydration properties. Extruded cereals were produced using a starch-based recipe (whole and wheat flours) and two sources of fibers (oat bran concentrate and wheat bran). The oat and wheat bran levels used in this study were 0, 10, and 20%. The different mixtures were extruded in a pilot twinscrew extruder BC21 (Clextral) and then sugar coated after drying. Mechanical properties of extruded cereals were investigated by compression test. The cellular structure was observed by X-ray tomography. The quality of coating (thickness, homogeneity) was analyzed by optical coherence tomography. The rehydration properties of such cereals in milk were evaluated by magnetic resonance imaging and optical coherence tomography. This work revealed that structure assessment of extruded cereals may lead to a better understanding of the effect of fiber addition on texture and rehydration properties. The application of innovative methods, such as optical coherence tomography and magnetic resonance imaging, was found to be useful to quantify the structural properties.

Manufacturing of high performance polymer-matrix composites is normally carried out by means of autoclave using prepreg tapes stacked and consolidated under the simultaneous application of pressure and temperature. High autoclave pressures reduce the porosity in the laminate and ensure excellent mechanical properties. However, this manufacturing route is expensive in terms of capital investment and processing time, hindering its application in many industrial sectors. This fact has driven the demand of alternative out-of-autoclave processing routes. These techniques claim to produce composite parts faster and at lower cost but the mechanical performance is also reduced due to the lower fiber content and to the higher porosity. Corrient numerical models are able to simulate the mechanisms of void growth in polymer-matrix composites processed in autoclave. However these models are restricted to small spherical voids surrounded by a viscous resin. Their validity is not proved for long cylindrical voids in a viscous matrix surrounded by aligned fibers, the standard morphology observed in out-of-autoclave composites. In addition, there is an experimental evidence of the detrimental effect of voids on the mechanical performance of composites but, there is detailed information regarding the influence of curing conditions on the actual volume fraction, shape and spatial distribution of voids within the laminate. The standard techniques of microstructural characterization of composites (optical or electron microscopy, X-ray radiography, ultrasonics) provide information in two dimensions and are not always suitable to determine the porosity or void population. Moreover, they can not provide 3D information. The effect of curing cycle on the development of voids during consolidation of AS4/8552 prepregs at low pressure by compression molding was studied in unidirectional and multiaxial panels. They were manufactured using three different curing cycles carefully designed following the rheological and thermal analysis of the raw prepregs. The void volume fraction, shape and spatial distribution were analyzed in detail by means of X-ray computed microtomography, which has demonstrated its potential for analyzing the microstructural features of composites. It was demonstrated that the final void volume fraction depended on the evolution of the dynamic viscosity throughout the cycle. Most of the initial voids were the result of air entrapment and wrinkles created during lay-up. Differences in the final void volume fraction depended on the processing conditions for unidirectional and multiaxial panels. Voids were rod-like shaped and were oriented parallel to the fibers and concentrated in channels along the fiber orientation. X-ray computer tomography analysis of voids along the fiber direction showed a cellular structure with an approximate cell diameter of 1 mm. The cell walls were fiber-rich regions and porosity was localized at the center of the cells. This porosity distribution within the laminate was the result of inhomogeneous consolidation. This information is critical to optimize processing parameters and to provide inputs for virtual testing and virtual processing tools. In addition, the matrix-controlled mechanical properties of the panels were measured in order to establish the relationship between processing conditions and mechanical performance. The interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and the interlaminar toughness (GIc and GIIc) were selected to evaluate the effect of porosity on the mechanical performance of unidirectional panels. The ILSS was strongly affected by the porosity when the void contents was higher than 1%. The same trends were observed in the case of GIIc while GIc was insensitive to the void volume fraction. Additionally, the mechanical performance of multiaxial panels in compression, low velocity impact and compression after impact (CAI) was measured to address the effect of processing conditions. The compressive strength decreased with porosity and ply-clustering. However, the porosity did not influence the impact resistance and the coompression after impact strength because the effect of porosity was masked by other factors as the damage due to impact or the laminate lay-up. Finally, the effect of the processing conditions on the compaction behavior of unidirectional AS4/8552 panels manufactured by compression moulding was simulated using the finite element method, as a first approximation to more complex and accurate models for out-of autoclave curing and consolidation of composite laminates. The model parameters were obtained from rheological and thermo-mechanical experiments carried out in raw prepreg samples. The predictions of the thickness change during consolidation were in reasonable agreement with the experimental results.

True stress-true strain curves of naturally spun viscid line fibers retrieved directly from the spiral of orb-webs built by Argiope trifasciata spiders were measured using a novel methodology. This new procedure combines a method for removing the aqueous coating of the fibers and a technique that allows the accurate measurement of their cross sectional area. Comparison of the tensile behaviour of different samples indicates that naturally spun viscid lines show a large variability, comparable to that of other silks, such as major ampullate gland silk and silkworm silk. Nevertheless, application of a statistical analysis allowed identifying two independent parameters that underlie the variability and characterize the observed range of true stress-true strain curves. Combination of this result with previous mechanical and microstructural data suggested the assignment of these two independent effects to the degree of alignment of the protein chains and to the local relative humidity which, in turn, depends on the composition of the viscous coating and on the external environmental conditions.

The mechanical behavior and the deformation and failure micromechanisms of a thermally-bonded polypropylene nonwoven fabric were studied as a function of temperature and strain rate. Mechanical tests were carried out from 248 K (below the glass transition temperature) up to 383 K at strain rates in the range ≈10−3 s−1 to 10−1 s−1. In addition, individual fibers extracted from the nonwoven fabric were tested under the same conditions. Micromechanisms of deformation and failure at the fiber level were ascertained by means of mechanical tests within the scanning electron microscope while the strain distribution at the macroscopic level upon loading was determined by means of digital image correlation. It was found that the nonwoven behavior was mainly controlled by the properties of the fibers and of the interfiber bonds. Fiber properties determined the nonlinear behavior before the peak load while the interfiber bonds controlled the localization of damage after the peak load. The influence of these properties on the strength, ductility and energy absorbed during deformation is discussed from the experimental observations.

A full Hybrid lighting-CPV prototype has been assembled. This new concept mixes a classical CPV module with the production of light for illumination without a double conversion (solar energy to electricity and electricity to light) allowing a higher efficiency to the whole system. The present prototype is based on a commercial CPV module that has been adapted in order to be hybrid, adjusting the receivers to pass the fibers into the module, inserting a holder to adjust x,y and z position of the fibers and changing the original parquet of lenses by a bifocal one composed most of the original lenses and the inclusion of other lenses in the position of the corners. Results show that with a minimal loss in the CPV part, a luminous flux is obtained that can be used to illuminate. Adding an additional electrical lamp and a light sensor that enables this lamp when no light from the sun is received, a 38% saving on lighting electricity is expected in Madrid during a year.

A constitutive model is presented for the in-plane mechanical behavior of nonwoven fabrics. The model is developed within the context of the finite element method and provides the constitutive response for a mesodomain of the fabric corresponding to the area associated to a finite element. The model is built upon the ensemble of three blocks, namely fabric, fibers and damage. The continuum tensorial formulation of the fabric response rigorously takes into account the effect of fiber rotation for large strains and includes the nonlinear fiber behavior. In addition, the various damage mechanisms experimentally observed (bond and fiber fracture, interfiber friction and fiber pull-out) are included in a phenomenological way and the random nature of these materials is also taken into account by means of a Monte Carlo lottery to determine the damage thresholds. The model results are validated with recent experimental results on the tensile response of smooth and notched specimens of a polypropylene nonwoven fabric.

ABSTRACT Many of the buildings of the built heritage include a structure composed by timber elements. The economic volume involved in the maintenance and renewal of this built heritage is considerable, therefore, the study of the different reinforcement techniques applicable to this type of structure is of special interest. The wooden structures have traditionally been reinforced either with steel or with pieces of the same material, increasing the section of the damaged parts. The emergence of polymer composites reinforced with fibers, and their progressive use in construction, started to be applied as reinforcement in timber structures at the beginning of the nineties decade in the 20th century (Sins Bridge, 1992). Wood is a natural material with an excellent ratio between its mechanic characteristics and its weight. This feature is maintained with the use of composites as reinforcement. In terms of its constitutive model, linear elastic behavior parallel to the fiber up to fracture is admitted when subjected to tensile stress, while under compression, an initial linear elastic behavior, followed by a section plasticizing, is considered. In sawn timber beams subjected to bending, the predominant failure is mainly due to tensile stress; and frequently the fracture is located at the beam lower face. The FRP have a linear elastic behavior until fracture occurs, and have excellent mechanical properties in relation to their weight and volume. If the beam is reinforced by its lower face, its capacity to absorb tensile stresses will increase, and therefore, an increase in its carrying capacity is likely to be produced, as well as an increase in ductility. This work analyzes the benefits different reinforcement systems of composite materials provide, with the aim of contributing to the knowledge of this technique for recovering or increasing the strength properties of timber elements subjected to bending loads. It is a study based on data obtained experimentally using bending tests of pine timber beams reinforced with composite materials. Fibers used for the execution of the reinforcement are basalt and carbon. Basalt fiber composites are applied in different grammages, whereas with carbon composites, unidirectional and bidirectional fabrics are used. The behavior of the beams was analyzed regarding the reinforcement variables applied, and the results are compared with those of the tested beams without reinforcement. Furthermore it has been proved adjunting the nonlinear calculation model applied to predict the failure load of each reinforced beam. This work proves the good behavior of fiber reinforce plastic (FRP) with basalt fiber when applied to timber beams, and that of bidirectional carbon fabrics as opposed to the unidirectional ones.

In living bodies, the correct perceptual representation of size constancy requires that an object's size appear the same when it changes its location with respect to the observer. At the same time, it is necessary that objects at different locations appear to be the same size if they are. In order to do that, the perceptual system must recover from the stimuli impinging on the individual, from the light falling on the retina, a representation of the relative sizes of objects in the environment. Moreover, at the same time, image perception is related to another type of phenomena. It corresponds to the well known perceptual illusions. To analyze this facts, we propose a system based on a particular arrays of receptive points composed by optical fibers and dummy fibers. The structure is based on the first layers of the mammalians primary visual cortex. At that part of the brain, the neurons located at certain columns, respond to particular directions. This orientation changes in a systematic way as one moves across the cortical surface. In our case, the signals from the above-mentioned array are analyzed and information concerning orientation and size of a particular line is obtained. With this system, the Muelle-Lyer illusion has been studied and some rules to interpret why equal length objects give rise to different interpretations are presented.

The study of the Vertical-Cavity Semiconductor Optical Amplifiers (VCSOAs) for optical signal processing applications is increasing his interest. Due to their particular structure, the VCSOAs present some advantages when compared to their edge-emitting counterparts including low manufacturing costs, high coupling efficiency to optical fibers and the ease to fabricate 2-D arrays of this kind of devices. As a consequence, all-optical logic gates based on VCSOAs may be very promising devices for their use in optical computing and optical switching in communications. Moreover, since all the boolean logic functions can be implemented by combining NAND logic gates, the development of a Vertical-Cavity NAND gate would be of particular interest. In this paper, the characteristics of the dispersive optical bistability appearing on a VCSOA operated in reflection are studied. A progressive increment of the number of layers compounding the top Distributed Bragg Reflector (DBR) of the VCSOA results on a change on the shape of the appearing bistability from an S-shape to a clockwise bistable loop. This resulting clockwise bistability has high on-off contrast ratio and input power requirements one order of magnitude lower than those needed for edge-emitting devices. Based on these results, an all-optical vertical-cavity NAND gate with high on-off contrast ratio and an input power for operation of only 10|i\V will be reported in this paper.

ABSTRACT -ray astronomy studies the most energetic particles arriving to the Earth from outer space. This -rays are not generated by thermal processes in mere stars, but by means of particle acceleration mechanisms in astronomical objects such as active galactic nuclei, pulsars, supernovas or as a result of dark matter annihilation processes. The γ rays coming from these objects and their characteristics provide with valuable information to the scientist which try to understand the underlying physical fundamentals of these objects, as well as to develop theoretical models able to describe them accurately. The problem when observing rays is that they are absorbed in the highest layers of the atmosphere, so they don't reach the Earth surface (otherwise the planet would be uninhabitable). Therefore, there are only two possible ways to observe γ rays: by using detectors on-board of satellites, or by observing their secondary effects in the atmosphere. When a γ ray reaches the atmosphere, it interacts with the particles in the air generating a highly energetic electron-positron pair. These secondary particles generate in turn more particles, with less energy each time. While these particles are still energetic enough to travel faster than the speed of light in the air, they produce a bluish radiation known as Cherenkov light during a few nanoseconds. From the Earth surface, some special telescopes known as Cherenkov telescopes or IACTs (Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes), are able to detect the Cherenkov light and even to take images of the Cherenkov showers. From these images it is possible to know the main parameters of the original -ray, and with some -rays it is possible to deduce important characteristics of the emitting object, hundreds of light-years away. However, detecting Cherenkov showers generated by γ rays is not a simple task. The showers generated by low energy -rays contain few photons and last few nanoseconds, while the ones corresponding to high energy -rays, having more photons and lasting more time, are much more unlikely. This results in two clearly differentiated development lines for IACTs: In order to detect low energy showers, big reflectors are required to collect as much photons as possible from the few ones that these showers have. On the contrary, small telescopes are able to detect high energy showers, but a large area in the ground should be covered to increase the number of detected events. With the aim to improve the sensitivity of current Cherenkov showers in the high (> 10 TeV), medium (100 GeV - 10 TeV) and low (10 GeV - 100 GeV) energy ranges, the CTA (Cherenkov Telescope Array) project was created. This project, with more than 27 participating countries, intends to build an observatory in each hemisphere, each one equipped with 4 large size telescopes (LSTs), around 30 middle size telescopes (MSTs) and up to 70 small size telescopes (SSTs). With such an array, two targets would be achieved. First, the drastic increment in the collection area with respect to current IACTs will lead to detect more -rays in all the energy ranges. Secondly, when a Cherenkov shower is observed by several telescopes at the same time, it is possible to analyze it much more accurately thanks to the stereoscopic techniques. The present thesis gathers several technical developments for the trigger system of the medium and large size telescopes of CTA. As the Cherenkov showers are so short, the digitization and readout systems corresponding to each pixel must work at very high frequencies (_ 1 GHz). This makes unfeasible to read data continuously, because the amount of data would be unmanageable. Instead, the analog signals are sampled, storing the analog samples in a temporal ring buffer able to store up to a few _s. While the signals remain in the buffer, the trigger system performs a fast analysis of the signals and decides if the image in the buffer corresponds to a Cherenkov shower and deserves to be stored, or on the contrary it can be ignored allowing the buffer to be overwritten. The decision of saving the image or not, is based on the fact that Cherenkov showers produce photon detections in close pixels during near times, in contrast to the random arrival of the NSB phtotons. Checking if more than a certain number of pixels in a trigger region have detected more than a certain number of photons during a certain time window is enough to detect large showers. However, taking also into account how many photons have been detected in each pixel (sumtrigger technique) is more convenient to optimize the sensitivity to low energy showers. The developed trigger system presented in this thesis intends to optimize the sensitivity to low energy showers, so it performs the analog addition of the signals received in each pixel in the trigger region and compares the sum with a threshold which can be directly expressed as a number of detected photons (photoelectrons). The trigger system allows to select trigger regions of 14, 21, or 28 pixels (2, 3 or 4 clusters with 7 pixels each), and with extensive overlapping. In this way, every light increment inside a compact region of 14, 21 or 28 pixels is detected, and a trigger pulse is generated. In the most basic version of the trigger system, this pulse is just distributed throughout the camera in such a way that all the clusters are read at the same time, independently from their position in the camera, by means of a complex distribution system. Thus, the readout saves a complete camera image whenever the number of photoelectrons set as threshold is exceeded in a trigger region. However, this way of operating has two important drawbacks. First, the shower usually covers only a little part of the camera, so many pixels without relevant information are stored. When there are many telescopes as will be the case of CTA, the amount of useless stored information can be very high. On the other hand, with every trigger only some nanoseconds of information around the trigger time are stored. In the case of large showers, the duration of the shower can be quite larger, loosing information due to the temporal cut. With the aim to solve both limitations, a trigger and readout scheme based on two thresholds has been proposed. The high threshold decides if there is a relevant event in the camera, and in the positive case, only the trigger regions exceeding the low threshold are read, during a longer time. In this way, the information from empty pixels is not stored and the fixed images of the showers become to little \`videos" containing the temporal development of the shower. This new scheme is named COLIBRI (Concept for an Optimized Local Image Building and Readout Infrastructure), and it has been described in depth in chapter 5. An important problem affecting sumtrigger schemes like the one presented in this thesis is that in order to add the signals from each pixel properly, they must arrive at the same time. The photomultipliers used in each pixel introduce different delays which must be compensated to perform the additions properly. The effect of these delays has been analyzed, and a delay compensation system has been developed. The next trigger level consists of looking for simultaneous (or very near in time) triggers in neighbour telescopes. These function, together with others relating to interfacing different systems, have been developed in a system named Trigger Interface Board (TIB). This system is comprised of one module which will be placed inside the LSTs and MSTs cameras, and which will be connected to the neighbour telescopes through optical fibers. When a telescope receives a local trigger, it is resent to all the connected neighbours and vice-versa, so every telescope knows if its neighbours have been triggered. Once compensated the delay differences due to propagation in the optical fibers and in the air depending on the pointing direction, the TIB looks for coincidences, and in the case that the trigger condition is accomplished, the camera is read a fixed time after the local trigger arrived. Despite all the trigger system is the result of the cooperation of several groups, specially IFAE, Ciemat, ICC-UB and UCM in Spain, with some help from french and japanese groups, the Level 1 and the Trigger Interface Board constitute the core of this thesis, as they have been the two systems designed by the author of the thesis. For this reason, a large amount of technical information about these systems has been included. There are important future development lines regarding both the camera trigger (implementation in ASICS) and the stereo trigger (topological trigger), which will produce interesting improvements for the current designs during the following years, being useful for all the scientific community participating in CTA.

This Master’s Degree Thesis was to determine the influence that steel fibers and nano-additions of Silica and Alumina may possess in a High Strength Concrete mix. Based on a known dosage of High Strength Concrete, which contained Silica fume (10%) and polyolefin fibers (3 kg/m3), they were proceeded to be substituted for the incorporation of nano-additions of Silica and Alumina (7% and 3%, respectively) and by adding steel fibers rather than polyolefin fibers. This thesis carried out an experimental laboratory campaign, in which three (3) mixes of High Strength Concrete had nine (9) specimens each, where the content of nano-additions did not change, while the steel fiber content was 20 and 40 kg/m3. Subsequent to its completion, the specimens were subjected to different tests to determine the compressive strength, tensile strength, flexural strength, permeability, modulus of elasticity and Poisson's ratio in order to know the behavior of the mixes once the nano-additions and steel fibers were added. The results indicate that the steel fibers improve the properties of the High Strength Concrete rather to affect in a negative way

The effect of porosity on the transverse mechanical properties of unidirectional fiber-reinforced composites is studied by means of computational micromechanics. The composite behavior is simulated by the finite element analysis of a representative volume element of the composite microstructure in which the random distribution of fibers and the voids are explicitly included. Two types of voids – interfiber voids and matrix voids – were included in the microstructure and the actual damage mechanisms in the composite, namely matrix and interface failure, were accounted for. It was found that porosity (in the range 1–5%) led to a large reduction in the transverse strength and the influence of both types of voids in the onset and propagation of damage throughout the microstructure was studied under transverse tension and compression. Finally, the failure locus of the composite lamina under transverse tension/compression and out-of-plane shear was obtained by means of computational micromechanics and compared with the predictions of Puck’s model and with experimental data available in the literature. The results show that the strength of composites is significantly reduced by the presence of voids

Currently, cell culture systems that include nanoscale topography are widely used in order to provide cells additional cues closer to the in vivo environment, seeking to mimic the natural extracellular matrix. Electrospinning is one of the most common techniques to produce nano fiber mats. However, since many sensitive parameters play an important role in the process, a lack of reproducibility is a major drawback. Here we present a simple and robust methodology to prepare reproducible electrospun-like samples. It consists of a polydimethylsiloxane mold reproducing the fiber pattern to solvent-cast a polymer solution and obtain the final sample. To validate this methodology, poly(L-lactic) acid (PLLA) samples were obtained and, after characterisation, bioactivity and ability to direct cell response were assessed. C2C12 myoblasts developed focal adhesions on the electrospun-like fibers and, when cultured under myogenic differentiation conditions, similar differentiation levels to electrospun PLLA fibers were obtained.

The study examined the effect of xylanase supplementation on apparent metabolizable energy (AME) and hepatic vitamin E and carotenoids in broiler chickens fed wheat based diets. A total of one hundred forty four male Ross 308 chickens were used in this study. Birds were randomly assigned to 3 dietary treatments (8 cages per treatment of 6 male broilers each) for 14 days from 7 to 21 day old. The control treatment was based on wheat-soyabean meal and was either unsupplemented or supplemented with either 1000 or 2000 xylanase units per kg diet. Orthogonal polynomial contrasts were used to test linear response to dietary xylanase activity. There was a positive linear relationship (P < 0.05) between dietary AME and doses of supplementary xylanase. A linear relationship (P < 0.05) was also observed between dosage of xylanase supplementation and hepatic vitamin E concentration and retention. In conclusion, xylanase supplementation improved dietary AME and increased hepatic vitamin E concentration which may have positive effects on the antioxidative status of the birds.
