We recently put forth a model of a protochlorophyllide (Pchlide) light-harvesting complex operative during angiosperm seedling de-etiolation (Reinbothe, C., Lebedev, N., and Reinbothe, S. (1999) Nature 397, 80–84). This model, which was based on in vitro reconstitution experiments with zinc analogs of Pchlide a and Pchlide b and the two NADPH:protochlorophyllide oxidoreductases (PORs), PORA and PORB, of barley, predicted a 5-fold excess of Pchlide b, relative to Pchlide a, in the prolamellar body of etioplasts. Recent work (Scheumann, V., Klement, H., Helfrich, M., Oster, U., Schoch, S., and Rüdiger, W. (1999) FEBS Lett. 445, 445–448), however, contradicted this model and reported that Pchlide b would not be present in etiolated plants. Here we demonstrate that Pchlide b is an abundant pigment in barley etioplasts but is rather metabolically unstable. It is rapidly converted to Pchlide a by virtue of 7-formyl reductase activity, an enzyme that had previously been implicated in the chlorophyll (Chl) b to Chl a reaction cycle. Our findings suggest that etiolated plants make use of 7-formyl reductase to fine tune the levels of Pchlide b and Pchlidea and thereby may regulate the steady-state level of light-harvesting POR-Pchlide comple

Selective area growth of a-plane GaN nanocolumns by molecular beam epitaxy was performed for the first time on a-plane GaN templates. Ti masks with 150 nm diameter nanoholes were fabricated by colloidal lithography, an easy, fast and cheap process capable to handle large areas. Even though colloidal lithography does not provide a perfect geometrical arrangement like e-beam lithography, it produces a very homogeneous mask in terms of nanohole diameter and density, and is used here for the first time for the selective area growth of GaN. We describe the current status of and provide performance results for a prototype compiler of Prolog to C, ciaocc. ciaocc is novel in that it is designed to accept different kinds of high-level information, typically obtained via an automatic analysis of the initial Prolog program and expressed in a standardized language of assertions. This information is used to optimize the resulting C code, which is then processed by an off-the-shelf C compiler. The basic translation process essentially mimics the unfolding of a bytecode emulator with respect to the particular bytecode corresponding to the Prolog program. This is facilitated by a flexible design of the instructions and their lower-level components. This approach allows reusing a sizable amount of the machinery of the bytecode emulator: predicates already written in C, data definitions, memory management routines and áreas, etc., as well as mixing emulated bytecode with native code in a relatively straightforward way. We report on the performance of programs compiled by the current versión of the system, both with and without analysis information.

The main objective of this work is to adapt the Laser Induced Forward Techniques (LIFT), a well- known laser direct writing technique for material transfer, to define metallic contacts (fingers and busbars) onto c-Si cells. The silver paste (with viscosity around 30-50 kcPs) is applied over a glass substrate using a coater. The thickness of the paste can be control changing the deposit parameters. The glass with the silver paste is set at a controlled gap over the c-Si cell. A solid state pulsed laser (532 nm) is focused at the glass/silver interface producing a droplet of silver that it is transferred to the c-Si cell. A scanner is used to print lines. The process parameters (silver paste thickness, gap and laser parameters -spot size, pulse energy and overlapping of pulses) are modified and the morphology of the lines is studied using confocal microscopy. Long lines are printed and the uniformity (in thickness and height) is studied. Some examples of metallization of larger areas (up to 10 cm x 10 cm) are presented.
