ABSTRACT The thesis entitled “El Poblado Dirigido de Caño Roto. Dialéctica entre morfología urbana y tipología edificatoria” [Poblado Dirigido of Caño Roto. Dialectic between urban morphology and typology] analyzes Caño Roto, a social housing neighborhood built in Madrid between 1957 and 1963, from the relationship between buildings and the resulting urban form. Also, this research develops a historiographical analysis of this project as well as the social, political, financial and legislative conditions present at time of its construction. This thesis concludes with a comparative study with other similar projects in temporal and geopolitical framework, urban approaches and some typological and constructive solutions. The research aims, on the one hand, to expand the current knowledge about Caño Roto, considered by many as one of the most important project at Spanish contemporary architecture; and, on the other hand, deducing from the study guidelines, criteria and strategies of urban design which can be extrapolated to contemporary architecture and urbanism. This way, we will be able to overcome current, but obsolete development models. However, we know that any response that suggests coming back to the past is destined to failure. Circumstances change and, consequently, solutions cannot be the same. But if the answers do not serve, questions are still right. Who is the protagonist of Caño Roto urban design? How do pedestrian and road traffic coexist together? What is the neighborhood’s density? How are residential, commercial and endowment uses articulated? How is urban fabric organized? What is the relationship between building types and the resulting urban morphology; and between private and public spaces? We start from the hypothesis that analysis, reflections and results arising from questioning Caño Roto about these, and many others, issues will enable us to have a comprehensive understanding of urban complexity, and they will also reveal proposals and solutions which help us to improve the quality of our cities; from now on.

Background: This study examined the daily surgical scheduling problem in a teaching hospital. This problem relates to the use of multiple operating rooms and different types of surgeons in a typical surgical day with deterministic operation durations (preincision, incision, and postincision times). Teaching hospitals play a key role in the health-care system; however, existing models assume that the duration of surgery is independent of the surgeon's skills. This problem has not been properly addressed in other studies. We analyze the case of a Spanish public hospital, in which continuous pressures and budgeting reductions entail the more efficient use of resources. Methods: To obtain an optimal solution for this problem, we developed a mixed-integer programming model and user-friendly interface that facilitate the scheduling of planned operations for the following surgical day. We also implemented a simulation model to assist the evaluation of different dispatching policies for surgeries and surgeons. The typical aspects we took into account were the type of surgeon, potential overtime, idling time of surgeons, and the use of operating rooms. Results: It is necessary to consider the expertise of a given surgeon when formulating a schedule: such skill can decrease the probability of delays that could affect subsequent surgeries or cause cancellation of the final surgery. We obtained optimal solutions for a set of given instances, which we obtained through surgical information related to acceptable times collected from a Spanish public hospital. Conclusions: We developed a computer-aided framework with a user-friendly interface for use by a surgical manager that presents a 3-D simulation of the problem. Additionally, we obtained an efficient formulation for this complex problem. However, the spread of this kind of operation research in Spanish public health hospitals will take a long time since there is a lack of knowledge of the beneficial techniques and possibilities that operational research can offer for the health-care system.

ABSTRACT Architect Pedro Muguruza (1893-1952) was a pivotal figure in the Spanish architectural culture of the first half of the 20th century. However, his work as a whole has been insufficiently approached by architectural historiography. This thesis is indeed the first comprehensive research of his professional career. Muguruza’s work is abundant and diverse. He was also a professor at the School of Architecture in Madrid, a luminary scholar at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and the first General Director of Architecture in Spain. All these facts compel a profound monographic exploration of his far-reaching working path. Muguruza’s projects have been organized, classified and analyzed in this thesis both from historical and architectural points of view. Primary and secondary sources have been scrutinized throughout this research and one of the assets of this project is the rigorous documentation on which it is firmly grounded. The results of this research have been chronologically organized and structured into three chapters identified with the general stages of his prolific career: 1. Training years and his initial paths (1909-1923). 2. Professional development (1923-1938). 3. His role in the state administration and his last period (1938-1952). A chronological catalogue of all his architectural work has also been carried out as part of this project. This catalogue offers the possibility to track his works and all references to them under a historical perspective. More than 1,200 images of his projects have been included in this catalogue. The thesis has gone through and shown up the work of an architect whose magnitude and versatility is much more than what previously known. Muguruza represents a complicated figure to approach ideologically speaking because of his later relationship to Franco’s regime – when in fact Muguruza developed a big part of his projects in the 20’s and 30’s before the dictatorship –. He is also a difficult figure to research on because of his exhaustive working activity in different dimensions: architectural, artistic and institutional. This research allows any incoming scholars to approach Muguruza’s projects under an accurate perspective. From his initial works to his maturity period, his projects have been analyzed and classified by establishing different stages. Additionally, some constant guidelines within his long career and the influences he received both in Spain and abroad have also been identified and properly considered. His architectural line of thought has been explored through his writings too. This thesis provides a complete overview of a multifaceted Muguruza, an architect who can be introduced as an archetype of our recent cultural heritage. By exploring his work a quintessential part of the Spanish contemporary architecture is definitively revealed and acknowledged.

The art of construction is a risky activity that directly affects the life and physical integrity of persons. Since the approval of Law 31/1995, of November 8, Prevention of Occupational Risks was the first legislation that established the current basis in all sectors and then transposed into Spanish law Directive 92/57/CEE called Royal Decree 1627/1997 of October 24, on minimum safety and health dispositions in construction works, measures have been proposed to develop a mixed body of scientific literature composed of researchers and professionals in the field of occupational safety and health, but even today there is still no clear and firm proposal, showing a lack of awareness in the occupational risk prevention and, therefore, a consolidation of the culture of prevention in society. Therefore, the technicians, who make up the building process, can incur in very high responsibilities, such as: Author of the project, Coordinator of Safety and Health during the preparation of the project and during the execution of works, Site Management: Site Manager. This involves the immediate creation of a general training in prevention for all architects starting when still studying, as well as specific training, appropriate and complementary to all the architects that will be devoted to the specialty of occupational safety and health in construction works. That is, first, we must make the responsible bodies aware of the urgent need to integrate risk prevention in the curricula of architecture and later in the continuing education of the profession. It is necessary that our teaching must conform to the laws on safety and health, due to the fact that the law recognizes our academic degrees and professional qualifications to perform functions in that area

Sports started to gain relevance in Spain around the end of the nineteenth century and the beginning of the twentieth century as a leisure and health option of the upper classes imported from Britain. Its early development was intertwined with the spread of other kinds of physical activities with much more tradition on the continent: gymnastics and physical education. First played by the ruling classes – aristocracy and high bourgeoisie – sports permeated towards petty bourgeoisie and middle classes in urban areas such as Madrid, Barcelona, San Sebastián and Santander. This pattern meant that the expansion of sports was unavoidably tied to the degree of industrialisation and cultural modernisation of the country. Since 1910, and mainly during the 1920s, sport grew in popularity as a spectacle and, toa much lesser degree, as a practice among the Spanish population.

This study examined the relationship between medical advice to engage in physical activity with type of demand required by physical activity and demographic variables. A cross-sectional study was developed, featuring a questionnaire on physicians? advice, and type of demand. The questionnaire was completed by a probability and nationwide sample of older adults in Spain ( n = 933, M = 74.1, range 65?93), randomly selected using multistage sampling. More physically active older adults have, more often than the less active, received physicians? advice to engage in physical activity. There is a signifi cant relationship between medical advice and type of demand ( p menor que .01) and age ( p menor que .05). However, no relationship was found between physician medical advice and gender, social class, or income. Physicians can effectively promote physical activity among sedentary older adults through appropriate advice. Consequently, health authorities should promote physicians' advising older patients to pursue physical activity.

The paper presents the results of a study on cultural trends in the abandonment of sports and physical activity among the Spanish youth. The study, that is being conducted due to a grant awarded by the Superior Sports Council (CSD) (Ref. 007/UPB10/12), examines how the adoption of this new lifestyle (sedentary) that is gradually taking root among the Spanish youth can influence one way or another the self-perceived health and well-being among this population.

Sedentarism has become one of the major concerns of our times. Nowadays people spend most of the time sitting down and moving by mechanical means instead of exercising themselves. Younger generations do only a little more sport today than their counterparts did a decade ago. In other words, sedentary habits have become common in our society, especially among the young. What cultural mechanisms have contributed to this? What are the consequences of a sedentary lifestyle for our health and well-being? These are the questions we have posed in this study. We conducted qualitative research among Spanish young people, and the results have provided important clues to help us understand better how ?active sedentarism? has become the norm among young people.

This work describes the analysis of 15 pharmaceutical compounds, belonging to different therapeutic classes (anti-inflammatory/analgesics, lipid regulators, antiepileptics, ?-blockers and antidepressants) and with diverse physical?chemical properties, in Spanish soils with different farmland uses. The studied compounds were extracted from soil by ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) and determined, after derivatization, by gas chromatography with mass spectrometric detection (GC?MS). The limits of detection (LODs) ranged from 0.14 ng g?1 (naproxen) to 0.65 ng g?1 (amitriptyline). At least two compounds where detected in all samples, being ibuprofen, salicylic acid, and paracetamol, the most frequently detected compounds. The highest levels found in soil were 47 ng g?1 for allopurinol and 37 ng g?1 for salicylic acid. The influence of the type of crop and the sampling area on the levels of pharmaceuticals in soil, as well as their relationship with soil physical?chemical properties, was studied. The frequent and widespread detection of some of these compounds in agricultural soils show a diffuse contamination, although the low levels found do not pose a risk to the environment or the human health.
