Large free liquid volumes, 30 mm in diameter and 80 mm long, anchored to coaxial discs, have been achieved during a sounding-rocket flight. As these flights provide some six minutes of microgravity and the formation of the liquid column takes only a matter of seconds, ample time is left for experimentation. The results of these trials are presented, and the equipment used to obtain them is briefly described.

As part of ongoing work to obtain a reliable estimate of the total ice volume of Svalbard glaciers and their potential contribution to sea-level rise, we present here volume calculations, with detailed error estimates, for ten glaciers on western Nordenskiöld Land, central Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The volume estimates are based upon a dense net of GPR-retrieved ice thickness data collected over several field campaigns spanning the period 1999-2012. On the basis of the pattern of scattering in theradargrams, we also analyse the hydrothermal structure of these glaciers.

The project to verify the performance of space tether technology was successfully demonstrated by the launch of the sounding rocket S520 the 25tu. The project is the space demonstration of science and engineering technologies of a bare tape electrodynamic tether (EDT) in the international campaign between Japan, USA, Europe and Australia. Method of "Inverse ORIGAMI (Tape tether folding)" was employed in order to deploy the bare tape EDT in a short period time of the suborbital flight. The deployment of tape tether was tested in a various experimental schemes on ground to show high reliability of tape tether deployment. The rocket was launched on the summer of 2010 and deployed a bare electro-dynamic tape tether with length 132.6 m, which is the world record of the length deployment of tape tether. The verification of tether technology has found a variety kind of science and technology results as the first in the humankind and will lead a large number of applications of space tether technologies

A sounding rocket experiment is proposed to carry out two experiments by the conductive bare-tether; 1) the test of the OML (Orbital-Motion-Limited) theory to collect electron, and II) the test of techniques to determine (neutral) density profile in critical E-layer. The main driver of the mission is provide a space tether technology experiment in low-Earth-Orbit (LEO) deploying a long tape tether in space and verify the performance of the bare electrodynamic tape tether. The sounding rocket experiment will show no danger to other satellites as the tether missions YES1, SEDSAT, and ProCEDS, which is cancelled just for afraid of collision with the ISS orbit. Also, the sounding rocket mission is possible to demonstrate the bare tether technology in low cost, simple mission concept, fast realization for space structures. The present sounding rocket experiment is expected to be the first conductive bare tether experiment.

A mission on board a sounding rocket to carry out two bare-tether experiments is proposed: a test of orbital-motion-limited (OML) collection and the proof-of-flight of a technique to determine the (neutral) density vertical profile in the critical E-layer. Since full bias from the motional field will be small (~ 20V), corresponding to a tape 1 km long and V rocket <8 km/s, a power source with a range of supply voltages of few kV would be used. First, the negative terminal of the supply would be connected to the tape, and the positive terminal to a round, conductive boom of length 10 - 20 m; electrons collected by the boom cross the supply into the tape, where they leak out at the rate of ion impact plus secondary emission. Determination of the density profile from measurements of auroral emissions observed from the rocket, as secondaries racing down the magnetic field reach an E-layer footprint, are discussed. Next the positive terminal of the voltage supply is connected to the tape, and the negative terminal to a Hollow Cathode (HC); electrons now collected by the tape cross the supply, and are ejected at the HC. The opposite connections, with current collection operated by tape and boom, and operating on electrons and ions, and through partial switching in the supply, allow testing OML collection in almost all respects it depends on.

We describe a compact lightweight impulse radar for radio-echo sounding of subsurface structures designed specifically for glaciological applications. The radar operates at frequencies between 10 and 75 MHz. Its main advantages are that it has a high signal-to-noise ratio and a corresponding wide dynamic range of 132 dB due mainly to its ability to perform real-time stacking (up to 4096 traces) as well as to the high transmitted power (peak voltage 2800 V). The maximum recording time window, 40 ?s at 100 MHz sampling frequency, results in possible radar returns from as deep as 3300 m. It is a versatile radar, suitable for different geophysical measurements (common-offset profiling, common midpoint, transillumination, etc.) and for different profiling set-ups, such as a snowmobile and sledge convoy or carried in a backpack and operated by a single person. Its low power consumption (6.6 W for the transmitter and 7.5 W for the receiver) allows the system to operate under battery power for mayor que7 hours with a total weight of menor que9 kg for all equipment, antennas and batteries.

Amundsenisen is an ice field, 80 km2 in area, located in Southern Spitsbergen, Svalbard. Radio-echo sounding measurements at 20 MHz show high intensity returns from a nearly flat basal reflector at four zones, all of them with ice thickness larger than 500m. These reflections suggest possible subglacial lakes. To determine whether basal liquid water is compatible with current pressure and temperature conditions, we aim at applying a thermo mechanical model with a free boundary at the bed defined as solution of a Stefan problem for the interface ice-subglaciallake. The complexity of the problem suggests the use of a bi-dimensional model, but this requires that well-defined flowlines across the zones with suspected subglacial lakes are available. We define these flow lines from the solution of a three-dimensional dynamical model, and this is the main goal of the present contribution. We apply a three-dimensional full-Stokes model of glacier dynamics to Amundsenisen icefield. We are mostly interested in the plateau zone of the icefield, so we introduce artificial vertical boundaries at the heads of the main outlet glaciers draining Amundsenisen. At these boundaries we set velocity boundary conditions. Velocities near the centres of the heads of the outlets are known from experimental measurements. The velocities at depth are calculated according to a SIA velocity-depth profile, and those at the rest of the transverse section are computed following Nye’s (1952) model. We select as southeastern boundary of the model domain an ice divide, where we set boundary conditions of zero horizontal velocities and zero vertical shear stresses. The upper boundary is a traction-free boundary. For the basal boundary conditions, on the zones of suspected subglacial lakes we set free-slip boundary conditions, while for the rest of the basal boundary we use a friction law linking the sliding velocity to the basal shear stress,in such a way that, contrary to the shallow ice approximation, the basal shear stress is not equal to the basal driving stress but rather part of the solution.

ABSTRACT This work has the vocation of drawing out the numerous opportunities an architect has at his disposal, upon imagining the sonorous aspect of the city in relation to the bell. Many of the dimensions indicated, both known and unknown, are just awakened to the study of what a sound space designer, as Llorenç Barber, comes to tell us, from a discipline apparently contacted, but often parallel to the architecture. Taking the bell concerts held so far as actual implementation of the instrumental condition of over two hundred cities around the world, the study analyzes the findings, successes and failures, obtained over the last twenty years of experience, as explicit results of a sound work in the city, tested, verified and refined, from which to extract specific indications that can be applied in the design of urban space. By triangular analyzing of defined vertices: sender-bell, half-city, receptor-citizen; the research addresses issues relating to the production and reception of sound phenomenon generated by the bell in the city. In relation to production, part of the work is devoted to the study of observed acoustic effects, ordered gradual scale which produces a distribution of sound capable of design: the glass of the bell, the bell room, the bell tower and the body of the building, the city and territory. By way of sounding boards and read as if they were Russian dolls, one inside the other, the show spaces identified specific sound qualities, defined both for their geometric, formal, constructive use, such as those for hosting the subsequent boxes. In order to clarify the influence of such issues in the sound aspect of the city, we propose an ordered pattern of connection and disconnection of scales, using a purely parametric technique created on purpose, along with more traditional methodological variables. At the same time, and trying to clarify how, when set in vibration, the city is apprehended, enjoyed and remembered for the citizen-listener, another part of the work is devoted to the study of aspects of aural reception in shared ambulation. In this case the research aims to claim more subversive than other dimensions, but beyond the usual ways in which an architect works, the experience reveals intensely plurifocal multiplying effects to consider: functional effects and significant recognition and integration belonging to a body of territorial and social historical and geographical coordinates of new meaning and perceptual effects of immersion, ubiquity, timeliness or instability; aesthetic effects of recall, interpretation and recreation of symbolic poetic; and even political effects, revealing a continuous urban space regeneration site for the exhibition in its double meaning, for display and danger, or as a citizen sense container. To sharpen the relevance of what was obtained in each of the dimensions mentioned, the work is divided into three incremental approaches: the general corpus of the concerts held so far, the concerts in Spain, the three concerts for Madrid: Magna Mater (1991), Festi Clamores (2000) and Aurea Catena (2007). While the proposed model comes in the light of the bells concert Llorenç Barber, the scale of a whole city and individual compositional intent, it is understood that it would be useful for the orderly use of any professional interested in the sound aspect of the city, an aspect sparsely attended, incidentally, from the architectural discipline.

The delay caused by the reflected ray in broadband communication has a great influence on the communications in subway tunnel. This paper presents measurements taken in subway tunnels at 2.4 GHz, with 5 MHz bandwidth. According to propagation characteristics of tunnel, the measurements were carried out with a frequency domain channel sounding technique, in three typical scenarios: line of sight (LOS), Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) and far line of sight (FLOS), which lead to different delay distributions. Firstly IFFT was chosen to get channel impulse response (CIR) h(t) from measured three-dimensional transfer functions. Power delay profile (PDP) was investigated to give an overview of broadband channel model. Thereafter, a long delay caused by the obturation of tunnel is observed and investigated in all the scenarios. The measurements show that the reflection can be greatly remained by the tunnel, which leads to long delay cluster where the reflection, but direct ray, makes the main contribution for radio wave propagation. Four important parameters: distribution of whole PDP power, first peak arriving time, reflection cluster duration and PDP power distribution of reflection cluster were studied to give a detailed description of long delay characteristic in tunnel. This can be used to ensure high capacity communication in tunnels

ABSTRACT Magnetic Resonance Sounding is a geophysical method performed through the excitation of the subsurface water by a variable electrical intensity delivered through a wire extended on the surface, forming a circle or a square. The investigated volume depends on the wire length and the intensity used, determining the different subsurface depths reached. In the usual application of the method, this depth ranges between 10 and 100 m. This thesis studies the adaptation of the above method to more superficial applications using smaller wire loops. Information about the subsurface in the range of decimeter to a few meters is interesting regarding physics of soils, as well as different Engineering problems, either for water extraction or for construction. After a review of the nowadays state of the art of the method regarding its usual applications, the special issues attached to its use to perform very shallow measures are studied. In order to sort out these problems two main research lines are considered: On the one hand, a study about the influence of the characteristics of the emitted pulse in the resulting measure quality is performed. Possible strategies in order to improve this pulse are investigated, as the excitation pulse is a key parameter to obtain information from different depths of the subsurface. On the other hand, the study tries to optimize the measurement device to its adaptation to the study of the first meters of the ground with the available instrumentation, the NumisLITE equipment from Iris Instruments.

In order to obtain more human like sounding humanmachine interfaces we must first be able to give them expressive capabilities in the way of emotional and stylistic features so as to closely adequate them to the intended task. If we want to replicate those features it is not enough to merely replicate the prosodic information of fundamental frequency and speaking rhythm. The proposed additional layer is the modification of the glottal model, for which we make use of the GlottHMM parameters. This paper analyzes the viability of such an approach by verifying that the expressive nuances are captured by the aforementioned features, obtaining 95% recognition rates on styled speaking and 82% on emotional speech. Then we evaluate the effect of speaker bias and recording environment on the source modeling in order to quantify possible problems when analyzing multi-speaker databases. Finally we propose a speaking styles separation for Spanish based on prosodic features and check its perceptual significance.
