Recently a new type of cosmological singularity has been postulated for infinite barotropic index w in the equation of state p = wρ of the cosmological fluid, but vanishing pressure and density at the singular event. Apparently the barotropic index w would be the only physical quantity to blow up at the singularity. In this talk we would like to discuss the strength of such singularities and compare them with other types. We show that they are weak singularities

Astronomical observations of luminosity distances derived from Type Ia supernovae, CMB spectrum and global matter distribution provide evidence of cosmic speed up of the Universe. Alternatively, cosmic acceleration might be due to an exotic fluid filling the Universe, known as dark energy. These have given rise to a collection of new cosmological evolutions, future singularites being the most perplexing ones (“big rip”, “sudden singularities”. . .).

The singularities which arise when there is a sudden change of boundary conditions are modelled using spectral shape interpolation functions. The procedure can be used for elasticity as well as potential theory and to any degree of accuracy with respect to the smooth part of the curve.

Recommender systems play an important role in reducing the negative impact of informa- tion overload on those websites where users have the possibility of voting for their prefer- ences on items. The most normal technique for dealing with the recommendation mechanism is to use collaborative filtering, in which it is essential to discover the most similar users to whom you desire to make recommendations. The hypothesis of this paper is that the results obtained by applying traditional similarities measures can be improved by taking contextual information, drawn from the entire body of users, and using it to cal- culate the singularity which exists, for each item, in the votes cast by each pair of users that you wish to compare. As such, the greater the measure of singularity result between the votes cast by two given users, the greater the impact this will have on the similarity. The results, tested on the Movielens, Netflix and FilmAffinity databases, corroborate the excellent behaviour of the singularity measure proposed.

In this talk we would like to analyse the appearance of singularities in FLRW cosmological models which evolve close to w = -1, where w is the barotropic index of the universe. We relate small terms in cosmological time around w = -1 with the correspondent scale factor of the universe and check for the formation of singularities.

The singularities in Dromo are characterized in this paper, both from an analytical and a numerical perspective. When the angular momentum vanishes, Dromo may encounter a singularity in the evolution equations. The cancellation of the angular momentum occurs in very speci?c situations and may be caused by the action of strong perturbations. The gravitational attraction of a perturbing planet may lead to rapid changes in the angular momentum of the particle. In practice, this situation may be encountered during deep planetocentric ?ybys. The performance of Dromo is evaluated in di?erent scenarios. First, Dromo is validated for integrating the orbit of Near Earth Asteroids. Resulting errors are of the order of the diameter of the asteroid. Second, a set of theoretical ?ybys are designed for analyzing the performance of the formulation in the vicinity of the singularity. New sets of Dromo variables are proposed in order to minimize the dependency of Dromo on the angular momentum. A slower time scale is introduced, leading to a more stable description of the ?yby phase. Improvements in the overall performance of the algorithm are observed when integrating orbits close to the singularity.

A mathematical model of the process employed by a sonic anemometer to build up the measured wind vector in a steady flow is presented to illustrate the way the geometry of these sensors as well as the characteristics of aerodynamic disturbance on the acoustic path can lead to singularities in the transformation function that relates the measured (disturbed) wind vector with the real (corrected) wind vector, impeding the application of correction/calibration functions for some wind conditions. An implicit function theorem allows for the identification of those combinations of real wind conditions and design parameters that lead to undefined correction/ calibration functions. In general, orthogonal path sensors do not show problematic combination of parameters. However, some geometric sonic sensor designs, available in the market, with paths forming smaller angles could lead to undefined correction functions for some levels of aerodynamic disturbances and for certain wind directions. The parameters studied have a strong influence on the existence and number of singularities in the correction/ calibration function as well as on the number of singularities for some combination of parameters. Some conclusions concerning good design practices are included.

An analysis of a stretch of coastline shows multiple alterations through environmental climate actions. The narrow, fragile line displays singularities due to three basic causes. The first is the discontinuity in feed or localised loss of solid coastal material. Called massics, their simplest examples are deltas and undersea canyons. The second is due to a brusque change in the alignment of the shoreline’s edge, headlands, groins, harbour and defence works. Given the name of geometric singularities, their simplest uses are artificial beaches in the shelter of a straight groin or spits. The third is due to littoral dynamics, emerged or submerged obstacles which diffract and refract wave action, causing a change in the sea level’s super-elevation in breaker areas. Called dynamics, the simplest examples are salients, tombolos and shells. Discussion of the causes giving rise to variations in the coastline and formation of singularities is the raison d’être of investigation, using actual cases to check the suitability of the classification proposed, the tangential or differential action of waves on the coastal landscape in addition to possible simple, compound and complex shapes detected in nature, both in erosion and deposit processes

We study the evolution of a viscous fluid drop rotating about a fixed axis at constant angular velocity $Omega$ or constant angular momentum L surrounded by another viscous fluid. The problem is considered in the limit of large Ekman number and small Reynolds number. The analysis is carried out by combining asymptotic analysis and full numerical simulation by means of the boundary element method. We pay special attention to the stability/instability of equilibrium shapes and the possible formation of singularities representing a change in the topology of the fluid domain. When the evolution is at constant $Omega$, depending on its value, drops can take the form of a flat film whose thickness goes to zero in finite time or an elongated filament that extends indefinitely. When evolution takes place at constant L and axial symmetry is imposed, thin films surrounded by a toroidal rim can develop, but the film thickness does not vanish in finite time. When axial symmetry is not imposed and L is sufficiently large, drops break axial symmetry and, depending on the value of L, reach an equilibrium configuration with a 2-fold symmetry or break up into several drops with a 2- or 3-fold symmetry. The mechanism of breakup is also described

Let π : FM ! M be the bundle of linear frames of a manifold M. A basis Lijk , j < k, of diffeomorphism invariant Lagrangians on J1 (FM) was determined in [J. Muñoz Masqué, M. E. Rosado, Invariant variational problems on linear frame bundles, J. Phys. A35 (2002) 2013-2036]. The notion of a characteristic hypersurface for an arbitrary first-order PDE system on an ar- bitrary bred manifold π : P → M, is introduced and for the systems dened by the Euler-Lagrange equations of Lijk every hypersurface is shown to be characteristic. The Euler-Lagrange equations of the natural basis of Lagrangian densities Lijk on the bundle of linear frames of a manifold M which are invariant under diffeomorphisms, are shown to be an underdetermined PDEs systems such that every hypersurface of M is characteristic for such equations. This explains why these systems cannot be written in the Cauchy-Kowaleska form, although they are known to be formally integrable by using the tools of geometric theory of partial differential equations, see [J. Muñoz Masqué, M. E. Rosado, Integrability of the eld equations of invariant variational problems on linear frame bundles, J. Geom. Phys. 49 (2004), 119-155]

We present a methodology for reducing a straight line fitting regression problem to a Least Squares minimization one. This is accomplished through the definition of a measure on the data space that takes into account directional dependences of errors, and the use of polar descriptors for straight lines. This strategy improves the robustness by avoiding singularities and non-describable lines. The methodology is powerful enough to deal with non-normal bivariate heteroscedastic data error models, but can also supersede classical regression methods by making some particular assumptions. An implementation of the methodology for the normal bivariate case is developed and evaluated.

In the Line of Investigation that in the department of “Technical Drawing” in the School of Agriculture Engineering of Madrid, we carry out on the study of The Technical Curves and his singularities, we demonstrate an interesting property of the Logarithmic Spiral. The demonstrated property consists of which the logarithmic spiral is a autoisoptic curve, that is to say that if from a point P anyone of the spiral tangent straight lines draw up to the previous arc, these form a constant angle α. This demonstration is novel and in addition we get to contribute a method to calculate the angle α given the equation of the spiral.

It is well known that the evaluation of the influence matrices in the boundary-element method requires the computation of singular integrals. Quadrature formulae exist which are especially tailored to the specific nature of the singularity, i.e. log(*- x0)9 Ijx- JC0), etc. Clearly the nodes and weights of these formulae vary with the location Xo of the singular point. A drawback of this approach is that a given problem usually includes different types of singularities, and therefore a general-purpose code would have to include many alternative formulae to cater for all possible cases. Recently, several authors1"3 have suggested a type independent alternative technique based on the combination of standard Gaussian rules with non-linear co-ordinate transformations. The transformation approach is particularly appealing in connection with the p.adaptive version, where the location of the collocation points varies at each step of the refinement process. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the technique in eference 3. We show that this technique is asymptotically correct as the number of Gauss points increases. However, the method possesses a 'hidden' source of error that is analysed and can easily be removed.

This paper presents the development of a new parallel robot designed for helping with bone milling surgeries. The robot is a small modular wrist with 2 active degrees of freedom, and it is proposed to be used as an orientation device located at the end of a robotic arm designed for bone milling processes. A generic kinematic geometry is proposed for this device. This first article shows the developments on the workspace optimization and the analysis of the force field required to complete a reconstruction of the inferior jawbone. The singularities of the mechanism are analyzed, and the actuator selection is justified with the torque requirements and the study of the force space. The results obtained by the simulations allow building a first prototype using linear motors. Bone milling experiment video is shown as additional material.

this paper analyzes the singularities inherent to the financial industry, in relation to other businesses, and its implications to financial crises throughout history. The efficient markets hypothesis is questioned, and its impact on the deregulation of the financial system is analyzed. Finally, the causes of the current crisis are investigated, and the general lines to be addressed for the redesign of a financial system to achieve an efficient and equitable capitalism are suggested.
