Hojas Kilométricas (Kilometric Sheets). Specifically, the study focuses on those sheets referring to the city centre and surrounding area of the Royal Site of Aranjuez, a town in the south of the Province of Madrid. The aim of this study is to restore the actual size and measurements of scanned images of the Hojas Kilométricas. This would allow us, among other things, to reestablish both the format and scale of the original plans. To achieve this goal it is necessary to rectify and then georeference these images, i.e. assign them a geographic reference system. This procedure is essential in the overlaying and comparison of the Hojas Kilométricas of the Royal Site with other historical cartography as well as other sources related to the same area from different time periods. Subsequent research would allow us, for example, to reconstruct the time-evolution of the urban area, to spot new construction and to pinpoint the locations of any altered or missing buildings or architectural features. In addition, this would allow us to develop and integrate databases for GIS models applicable to the management of our cultural heritage.

Análisis de los sistemas de mitigación del riesgo de tráfico en autopistas de peaje en diferentes países de Latinoamérica. This paper presents a cross-country analysis of traffic risk allocation in road concessions of Latin America. It shows that some countries such as Chile, Colombia, and Peru have been greatly concerned with mitigating traffic risk, either by putting into practice public guarantees, implementing flexible term concessions, or through availability payment concessions; whereas other countries such as Mexico and Brazil have assigned traffic risk to the private concessionaire by using fixed-term concession contracts without any traffic guarantees. Based on an analysis of data from 1990 to 2010, the paper finds that shifting traffic risk from the concessionaire to the government or users was not confined to the riskiest projects, as one might expect. The analysis also suggests that the implementation of traffic risk mitigation mechanisms in Latin American toll roads has not been very successful in reducing renegotiation rates or in increasing the number of bidders in the tenders

Una investigación sobre la mejora de la contaminación del aire (CA) por medio de arbolado urbano se realizó en Madrid, una ciudad con casi 4 M de habitantes, 2,8 M de vehículos y casi 3 M de árboles de mantenimiento público. La mayoría de los árboles estaban en dos bosques periurbanos. Los 650.000 restantes era pies de alineación y parques. Los taxones estudiados fueron Platanus orientalis (97.205 árboles), Ulmus sp. (70.557), Pinus pinea (49.038), Aesculus hippocastanum (22.266), Cedrus sp. (13.678) y Quercus ilex (1.650), de calles y parques. Muestras foliares se analizaron en diferentes épocas del año, así como datos de contaminación por PM10 de 28 estaciones de medición de la contaminación durante 30 años, y también la intensidad del tráfico (IMD) en 2.660 calles. La acumulación de metales pesados (MP) sobre hojas y dentro de estas se estimó en relación con la CA y del suelo y la IMD del tráfico. La concentración media de Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb y Zn en suelo (materia seca) alcanzó: 489,5, 0,7, 49,4, 60,9, 460,9, 12,8, 155,9 y 190,3 mg kg-1 respectivamente. Los árboles urbanos, particularmente coníferas (debido a la mayor CA en invierno) contribuyen significativamente a mejorar la CA sobre todo en calles con alta IMD. La capacidad de las seis sp. para capturar partículas de polvo en su superficies foliares está relacionada con la IMD del tráfico y se estimó en 16,8 kg/año de MP tóxicos. Pb y Zn resultaron ser buenos marcadores antrópicos en la ciudad en relación con el tráfico, que fue la principal fuente de contaminación en los árboles y suelos de Madrid. Las especies de árboles variaron en función de su capacidad para capturar partículas (dependiendo de las propiedades de sus superficies foliares) y acumular los MP absorbidos de los suelos. Las concentraciones foliares de Pb y Zn estuvieron por encima de los límites establecidos en diferentes sitios de la ciudad. La microlocalización de Zn mediante microscópico mostró la translocación al xilema y floema. Se detectaron puntos de contaminación puntual de Cu and Cr en antiguos polígonos industriales y la distribución espacial de los MP en los suelos de Madrid mostró que en incluso en zonas interiores del El Retiro había ciertos niveles elevados de [Pb] en suelo, tal vez por el emplazamiento la Real Fábrica de Porcelana en la misma zona hace 200 años. Distintas áreas del centro de la ciudad también alcanzaron niveles altos de [Pb] en suelo. Según los resultados, el empleo de una combinación de Pinus pinea con un estrato intermedio de Ulmus sp. y Cedrus sp. puede ser la mejor recomendación como filtro verde eficiente. El efecto del ozono (O3) sobre el arbolado en Madrid fue también objeto de este estudio. A pesar de la reducción de precursores aplicada en muchos países industrializados, O3 sigue siendo la principal causa de CA en el hemisferio norte, con el aumento de [O3] de fondo. Las mayores [O3] se alcanzaron en regiones mediterráneas, donde el efecto sobre la vegetación natural es compensado por el xeromorfismo y la baja conductancia estomática en respuesta los episodios de sequía estival característicos de este clima. Durante una campaña de monitoreo, se identificaron daños abióticos en hojas de encina parecidos a los de O3 que estaban plantadas en una franja de césped con riego del centro de Madrid. Dada la poca evidencia disponible de los síntomas de O3 en frondosas perennifolias, se hizo un estudio que trató de 1) confirman el diagnóstico de daño de O3, 2) investigar el grado de los síntomas en encinas y 3) analizar los factores ambientales que contribuyeron a los daños por O3, en particular en lo relacionado con el riego. Se analizaron los marcadores macro y micromorfológicos de estrés por O3, utilizando las mencionadas encinas a modo de parcela experimental. Los síntomas consistieron en punteado intercostal del haz, que aumentó con la edad. Además de un punteado subyacente, donde las células superiores del mesófilo mostraron reacciones características de daños por O3. Las células próximas a las zonas dañadas, presentaron marcadores adicionales de estrés oxidativo. Estos marcadores morfológicos y micromorfológicos de estrés por O3 fueron similares a otras frondosas caducifolias con daños por O3. Sin embargo, en nuestro caso el punteado fue evidente con AOT40 de 21 ppm•h, asociada a riego. Análisis posteriores mostraron que los árboles con riego aumentaron su conductancia estomática, con aumento de senescencia, manteniéndose sin cambios sus características xeromórficas foliares. Estos hallazgos ponen de relieve el papel primordial de la disponibilidad de agua frente a las características xeromórficas a la hora de manifestarse los síntomas en las células por daños de O3 en encina. ABSTRACT Research about air pollution mitigation by urban trees was conducted in Madrid (Spain), a southern European city with almost 4 M inhabitants, 2.8 M daily vehicles and 3 M trees under public maintenance. Most trees were located in two urban forests, while 650'000 trees along urban streets and in parks. The urban taxa included Platanus orientalis (97'205 trees), Ulmus sp. (70’557), Pinus pinea (49'038), Aesculus hippocastanum (22’266), Cedrus sp. (13'678 and Quercus ilex (1'650) along streets and parks. Leave samples were analysed sequentially in different seasons, PM10 data from 28 air monitoring stations during 30 years and traffic density estimated from 2’660 streets. Heavy metal (HM) accumulation on the leaf surface and within leaves was estimated per tree related to air and soil pollution, and traffic intensity. Mean concentration of Ba, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in topsoil samples (dry mass) amounted in Madrid: 489.5, 0.7, 49.4, 60.9, 460.9, 12.8, 155.9 and 190.3 mg kg-1 respectively. Urban trees, particularly conifers (due to higher pollution in winter) contributed significantly to alleviate air pollution especially near to high ADT roads. The capacity of the six urban street trees species to capture air-born dust on the foliage surface as related to traffic intensity was estimated to 16.8 kg of noxious metals from exhausts per year. Pb and Zn pointed to be tracers of anthropic activity in the city with vehicle traffic as the main source of diffuse pollution on trees and soils. Tree species differed by their capacity to capture air-borne dust (by different leaf surface properties) and to allocate HM from soils. Pb and Zn concentrations in the foliage were above limits in different urban sites and microscopic Zn revelation showed translocation in xylem and phloem tissue. Punctual contamination in soils by Cu and Cr was identified in former industrial areas and spatial trace element mapping showed for central Retiro Park certain high values of [Pb] in soils even related to a Royal pottery 200 years ago. Different areas in the city centre also reached high levels [Pb] in soils. According to the results, a combination of Pinus pinea with understorey Ulmus sp. and Cedrus sp. layers can be recommended for the best air filter efficiency. The effects of ozone (O3) on trees in different areas of Madrid were also part of this study. Despite abatement programs of precursors implemented in many industrialized countries, ozone remained the main air pollutant throughout the northern hemisphere with background [O3] increasing. Some of the highest ozone concentrations were measured in regions with a Mediterranean climate but the effect on the natural vegetation is alleviated by low stomatal uptake and frequent leaf xeromorphy in response to summer drought episodes characteristic of this climate. During a bioindication survey, abiotic O3-like injury was identified in foliage. Trees were growing on an irrigated lawn strip in the centre of Madrid. Given the little structural evidence available for O3 symptoms in broadleaved evergreen species, a study was undertaken in 2007 with the following objectives 1) confirm the diagnosis, 2) investigate the extent of symptoms in holm oaks growing in Madrid and 3) analyse the environmental factors contributing to O3 injury, particularly, the site water supply. Therefore, macro- and micromorphological markers of O3 stress were analysed, using the aforementioned lawn strip as an intensive study site. Symptoms consisted of adaxial and intercostal stippling increasing with leaf age. Underlying stippling, cells in the upper mesophyll showed HR-like reactions typical of ozone stress. The surrounding cells showed further oxidative stress markers. These morphological and micromorphological markers of ozone stress were similar to those recorded in deciduous broadleaved species. However, stippling became obvious already at an AOT40 of 21 ppm•h and was primarily found at irrigated sites. Subsequent analyses showed that irrigated trees had their stomatal conductance increased and leaf life-span reduced whereas their leaf xeromorphy remained unchanged. These findings suggest a central role of water availability versus leaf xeromorphy for ozone symptom expression by cell injury in holm oak.

Sight distance plays an important role in road traffic safety. Two types of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are utilized for the estimation of available sight distance in roads: Digital Terrain Models (DTMs) and Digital Surface Models (DSMs). DTMs, which represent the bare ground surface, are commonly used to determine available sight distance at the design stage. Additionally, the use of DSMs provides further information about elements by the roadsides such as trees, buildings, walls or even traffic signals which may reduce available sight distance. This document analyses the influence of three classes of DEMs in available sight distance estimation. For this purpose, diverse roads within the Region of Madrid (Spain) have been studied using software based on geographic information systems. The study evidences the influence of using each DEM in the outcome as well as the pros and cons of using each model.

Improving the knowledge of demand evolution over time is a key aspect in the evaluation of transport policies and in forecasting future investment needs. It becomes even more critical for the case of toll roads, which in recent decades has become an increasingly common device to fund road projects. However, literature regarding demand elasticity estimates in toll roads is sparse and leaves some important aspects to be analyzed in greater detail. In particular, previous research on traffic analysis does not often disaggregate heavy vehicle demand from the total volume, so that the specific behavioral patternsof this traffic segment are not taken into account. Furthermore, GDP is the main socioeconomic variable most commonly chosen to explain road freight traffic growth over time. This paper seeks to determine the variables that better explain the evolution of heavy vehicle demand in toll roads over time. To that end, we present a dynamic panel data methodology aimed at identifying the key socioeconomic variables that explain the behavior of road freight traffic throughout the years. The results show that, despite the usual practice, GDP may not constitute a suitable explanatory variable for heavy vehicle demand. Rather, considering only the GDP of those sectors with a high impact on transport demand, such as construction or industry, leads to more consistent results. The methodology is applied to Spanish toll roads for the 1990?2011 period. This is an interesting case in the international context, as road freight demand has experienced an even greater reduction in Spain than elsewhere, since the beginning of the economic crisis in 2008.

Tolls have increasingly become a common mechanism to fund road projects in recent decades. Therefore, improving knowledge of demand behavior constitutes a key aspect for stakeholders dealing with the management of toll roads. However, the literature concerning demand elasticity estimates for interurban toll roads is still limited due to their relatively scarce number in the international context. Furthermore, existing research has left some aspects to be investigated, among others, the choice of GDP as the most common socioeconomic variable to explain traffic growth over time. This paper intends to determine the variables that better explain the evolution of light vehicle demand in toll roads throughout the years. To that end, we establish a dynamic panel data methodology aimed at identifying the key socioeconomic variables explaining changes in light vehicle demand over time. The results show that, despite some usefulness, GDP does not constitute the most appropriate explanatory variable, while other parameters such as employment or GDP per capita lead to more stable and consistent results. The methodology is applied to Spanish toll roads for the 1990?2011 period, which constitutes a very interesting case on variations in toll road use, as road demand has experienced a significant decrease since the beginning of the economic crisis in 2008.

La zona de Madrid al Este del Retiro ha estado indefectiblemente condicionada en su tardío desarrollo urbano por su posición a espaldas del Real Sitio. La construcción hacia 1640 de las tapias que rodeaban los reales jardines transformó la red de caminos que partían hacia oriente, aisló los terrenos ubicados más al Este de la ciudad, con la que ya sólo se podrían comunicar por las carreteras de Aragón y Valencia, y condenó las expectativas de desarrollo urbano reduciendo los precios de las propiedades, lo cual determinó durante décadas los usos y la arquitectura de la zona. El Anteproyecto de Ensanche de Carlos María de Castro constituye el germen a partir del cual, durante un lento proceso de casi cien años, fue configurándose la ciudad que hoy conocemos. La identificación en el Archivo de Villa del primer plano general del Ensanche trazado por Castro, del cual anteriores trabajos advirtieron de su existencia aunque se desconocía su localización, es la principal aportación de esta investigación. Por un lado, este primer plano general del Ensanche manuscrito es, por sí mismo, un documento de indudable importancia en la historia del urbanismo madrileño. En segundo lugar, el análisis de su contenido arroja nueva luz sobre la propuesta original de Castro, parcialmente censurada por la Dirección General de Obras Públicas antes de la aprobación del plan en 1860. Especialmente en lo referente a la zona de Madrid al Este del Retiro, proyectada como barrio obrero del Ensanche, este documento ha aportado un enfoque desconocido hasta ahora sobre el paisaje urbano concebido por Castro para la más ambiciosa propuesta planteada en mucho tiempo al problema de la vivienda obrera. Finalmente, el análisis de la factura del plano revela la superposición de varias capas de dibujo, evidenciando que durante un tiempo fue un documento vivo, utilizado como plano de trabajo por el equipo de Castro durante aproximadamente diez años, hasta la destitución del ingeniero en 1868. Posteriores análisis del plano sobre otros ámbitos de la ciudad arrojarán sin duda nuevos datos sobre el proceso proyectual del conjunto del Ensanche. Pero la dinámica de lo real, sintetizable en múltiples factores de índole social, económica y legislativa, transformó durante las primeras décadas de andadura del Ensanche la ciudad proyectada por Castro al Este del Retiro. El dibujo de la ciudad, entendido como herramienta de análisis y empleado con éxito en trabajos de investigación realizados por otros autores en la misma línea, ha permitido deducir la reconstitución gráfica del estado de la ciudad en diferentes momentos singulares del desarrollo urbanístico de la zona, así como de la propuesta original de barrio obrero de Castro. No hay que olvidar que, a pesar del escaso interés que suscitaba entre los inversores inmobiliarios el ámbito geográfico de estudio de esta tesis, fue objeto, durante casi un siglo, de numerosas propuestas de ordenación y urbanización que, aunque no llegaron a materializarse, fueron configurando una suerte de desarrollo virtual de la ciudad paralelo al devenir de la realidad. De esta forma, el dibujo se constituye en esta tesis como fuente de información, herramienta de pensamiento y resultado de la investigación en sí mismo, ilustrando y contribuyendo al mejor conocimiento de la forma urbana. ABSTRACT The area of Madrid to the East of the Retiro has been inevitably conditioned in its late urban development by its position behind the Royal Site. The construction of the walls surrounding the royal gardens around 1640 transformed the network of roads departing eastward, isolated land located to the East of the city, with which already only could communicate by roads of Aragon and Valencia, condemned the expectations of urban development by reducing the prices of the properties, and determined for decades uses and architecture of the area. The Carlos María de Castro preliminary design of City Expansion is the germ from which, during a slow process of almost one hundred years, the city which we know today was setting up. The discovery in the City Archive of the City Expansion first drawing traced by Castro, which previous investigations warned of its existence although its location was unknown, is the main contribution of this research. Firstly, this hand drawn general plan of the city expansion is by itself a document of undoubted importance in the history of Madrid urbanism. Secondly, the analysis of its content sheds new light on Castro´s original proposal, partially censored by the Dirección General de Obras Públicas before the approval of the plan in 1860. Especially concerning the area of Madrid to the East of the Retiro, projected as a workingclass district of the City Expansion, this document has provided an unknown up to now approach on the urban landscape designed by Castro for the more ambitious proposal put forward in a long time to the problem of worker housing. Finally, analysis of hand drawn plan reveals the superposition of several layers of drawing, demonstrating that for a time it was a living document, used as a work plan by the Castro team for approximately ten years, until the dismissal of the engineer in 1868. Subsequent analysis of the drawing on other areas of the city will have no doubt new data on the design process of the whole City Expansion. But the dynamics of reality, synthesizable on multiple factors in social, economic and legislative, transformed during the first decades of existence of the City Expansion designed by Castro to the East of the Retiro. Drawing of the city, understood as a tool of analysis and used successfully in research works done by other authors on the same line, has allowed to deduct graphic reconstitution of the city status in different and singular moments in the urban development of the area, as well as the original Castro´s proposal of working-class district. It should not be forgotten that, despite the lack of interest which raised among investors the geographic scope of this thesis study, it was the object, for nearly a century, of numerous proposals for urbanization which, although they didn´t materialize, were setting up a sort of virtual development of the city parallel to the becoming of the reality. In this way, drawing is used in the thesis as a source of information, tool of thought and outcome of the research itself, illustrating and contributing to a better understanding of urban form.

La tesis analiza la trayectoria de las ciudades chilenas tomando como referencias la extensión, vastedad, proporciones y diversidad del paisaje en una región remota, ubicada en el confín del continente, aislada por el desierto de Atacama y la cordillera de Los Andes y que comprendía algunos de los territorios más desconocidos del Nuevo Mundo. El contexto temporal es el siglo XVIII, el período más activo de la colonización, cuando las primeras fundaciones tenían niveles de desarrollo que se expresaban en rasgos particulares, se construyen numerosas ciudades y se perfilan los contrastes entre el modelo teórico de ciudad y las ciudades reales. OBJETIVOS Analizar la forma, funciones y significado de las ciudades como respuestas a la extensión, vastedad, proporciones y diversidad del paisaje. Explorar los avances en el conocimiento del territorio y las nuevas interpretaciones del paisaje como bases para definir las estrategias de colonización y nuevas fundaciones Estudiar las influencias específicas del entorno sobre las estructuras urbanas Estos objetivos buscan aportar al conocimiento de la urbanización colonial en Chile rescatando las características distintivas del proceso según los diferentes ámbitos territoriales. METODOLOGÍA Se seleccionaron 22 ciudades como ejemplos de las transformaciones urbanas en Chile, según los paisajes y contextos culturales. Las ciudades se observaron como partes de un sistema de colonización en un territorio extenso y como individualidades fundadas en sitios específicos, cuyas cualidades se expresan en el paisaje del entorno de cada núcleo urbano. CONCLUSIONES La tesis confirma que la colonización de Chile fue una empresa militar y de dominio espacial del territorio. Las ciudades sostenían la conquista y el arraigo mediante estructuras urbanas regulares porque, la cuadricula -además de facilitar el trazado y el repartimiento de los lotes era símbolo de estabilidad en una región hostil y sujeta a la acción inesperada y destructora de la naturaleza, una forma orientadora en la vastedad y una expresión de orden y medida que contrastaba con la diversidad y extensión del paisaje. A pesar de la primacía de la cuadrícula, las ciudades no eran simples imitaciones de anteriores fundaciones; con el avance colonizador se afirmaba el anclaje de cada ciudad al paisaje del sitio de fundación, se perfeccionaban la forma y funciones urbanas mediante la adaptación al entorno y se fortalecía el arraigo de los a los nuevos paisajes que se iban construyendo. Las transformaciones urbanas dependían de los desafíos territoriales, las expectativas de los gobernantes y capacidades técnicas. Los cambios principales se manifiestan en el siglo XVIII, cuando las distintas zonas de Chile se colonizaron con estrategias afines a sus características geográficas y culturales y a las diferencias entre valles mineros, valles agrícolas, el litoral y las islas. El análisis revela que el desarrollo urbano de las ciudades fue condicionado por el relieve, la relación con otros núcleos urbanos y caminos, los recursos del lugar, la integración con estructuras colonizadoras -hacienda, fuerte o misión- predominantes en cada territorio y las interpretaciones del paisaje que se proponían desde la filosofía y las ciencias ilustradas. ABSTRACT INTRODUCTION The thesis analyzes the trajectory of the Chilean cities taking as reference the extension, vastness, proportions and diversity of landscape in a remote region, located on the edge of the continent, isolated by the Atacama Desert and the Andes mountains and comprising some of the most unknown territories of the New World. The temporal context is the eighteenth century, the most active of colonization, when the first foundations had levels of development that were expressed in particular forms; in this period many cities are built and the contrasts between the theoretical model of the city and the royal cities are emerging . OBJECTIVES •Analyze the form, function and significance of cities as responses to the extension, vastness, proportions and diversity of landscape. •Explore the advances in knowledge of the territory and the new interpretations of the landscape as a basis for defining the strategies of colonization and new foundations •Examine specific environmental influences on urban structures These objectives seek to contribute to the knowledge of colonial urbanization in Chile rescuing the distinctive characteristics of the process according to the different territorial areas. METHODOLOGY 22 cities as examples of urban transformation in Chile were selected according as the landscapes and cultural contexts. The cities were seen as part of a settlement system in a large territory and as individuals elements based on specific sites, whose qualities are expressed in the landscape around of each urban center. CONCLUSIONS The thesis confirms that the colonization of Chile was a military and space control of the territory. The cities holding the conquest and establishment through regular urban structures because, besides grid to facilitate the tracing and the division of the urban space was a symbol of stability in a hostile region and subject to unexpected and destructive action of nature, a guiding how the vastness and an expression of order and as contrasted with the diversity and extent of the landscape. Despite the primacy of the grid, the cities were not mere imitations of earlier foundations; as colonization progresses, the landscape of the place stated in each city, form and urban functions are improved by adapting the environment and establishment the landscapes that were recently built. Urban transformations depend on the territorial challenges, expectations of governments and technical capabilities. The main changes are manifested in the eighteenth century, when different areas of Chile are colonized with strategies related to its geographical and cultural characteristics and differences between mining valleys, agricultural valleys, the coast and islands. The analysis reveals that the urban development of cities was conditioned by relief, relative to other urban centers and roads, resources, integration with other colonial structures –farmers, missions or forts- dominant in each territory and the interpretations of landscape that is proposed from philosophy and illustrated science.
