Twenty production blasts in two open pit mines were monitored, in rocks with medium to very high strength. Three different blasting agents (ANFO, watergel and emulsion blend) were used, with powder factors ranging between 0.88 and 1.45 kg/m3. Excavators were front loaders and rope shovels. Mechanical properties of the rock, blasting characteristics and mucking rates were carefully measured. A model for the calculation of the productivity of excavators is developed thereof, in which the production rate results as a product of an ideal, maximum, productivity rate times an operating efficiency. The maximum rate is a function of the dipper capacity and the efficiency is a function of rock density, strength, and explosive energy concentration in the rock. The model is statistically significant and explains up to 92 % of the variance of the production rate measurements.

Abstract In mining, the estimate of the granulometric curve blasting debris is very important to evaluate the design, implementation and optimization of it. Currently, for the obtaining of this curves are used digital system of pictures taken by a camera. In this project, the fragmentation of six rock blasting were analyzed. The rock blastings are executed in 2012 in the quarry “El Aljibe” located in Almonacid de Toledo, with a automatic online system (Split Online) and a manual editing software (WipFrag). 120 randomly selected pictures have been analyzed. After the granulometric study, it appears that the size distribution curves obtained with both systems, statistically, are not the same, then, a possible relationship between the feature sizes X50 and X80 is analyzed, concluding that none of the systems is fully reliable, and systems must be calibrated with real data fragmentation obtained from data scales.

This paper investigates the propagation of airblast or pressure waves in air produced by bench blasting (i.e. detonation of the explosive in a row of blastholes, breaking the burden of rock towards the free vertical face of the block). Peak overpressure is calculated as a function of blasting parameters (explosive mass per delay and velocity at which the detonation sequence proceeds along the bench) and the polar coordinates of the position of interest (distance to the source and azimuth with respect to the free face). The model has been fitted to empirical data using linear least squares. The data set is composed of 122 airblast records monitored at distances less than 400 m in 41 production blasts carried out in two quarries. The model is statistically significant and has a determination coefficient of 0.87. The formula is validated from 12 airblast measurements gathered in five additional blasts.
