Machine learning techniques are used for extracting valuable knowledge from data. Nowa¬days, these techniques are becoming even more important due to the evolution in data ac¬quisition and storage, which is leading to data with different characteristics that must be exploited. Therefore, advances in data collection must be accompanied with advances in machine learning techniques to solve new challenges that might arise, on both academic and real applications. There are several machine learning techniques depending on both data characteristics and purpose. Unsupervised classification or clustering is one of the most known techniques when data lack of supervision (unlabeled data) and the aim is to discover data groups (clusters) according to their similarity. On the other hand, supervised classification needs data with supervision (labeled data) and its aim is to make predictions about labels of new data. The presence of data labels is a very important characteristic that guides not only the learning task but also other related tasks such as validation. When only some of the available data are labeled whereas the others remain unlabeled (partially labeled data), neither clustering nor supervised classification can be used. This scenario, which is becoming common nowadays because of labeling process ignorance or cost, is tackled with semi-supervised learning techniques. This thesis focuses on the branch of semi-supervised learning closest to clustering, i.e., to discover clusters using available labels as support to guide and improve the clustering process. Another important data characteristic, different from the presence of data labels, is the relevance or not of data features. Data are characterized by features, but it is possible that not all of them are relevant, or equally relevant, for the learning process. A recent clustering tendency, related to data relevance and called subspace clustering, claims that different clusters might be described by different feature subsets. This differs from traditional solutions to data relevance problem, where a single feature subset (usually the complete set of original features) is found and used to perform the clustering process. The proximity of this work to clustering leads to the first goal of this thesis. As commented above, clustering validation is a difficult task due to the absence of data labels. Although there are many indices that can be used to assess the quality of clustering solutions, these validations depend on clustering algorithms and data characteristics. Hence, in the first goal three known clustering algorithms are used to cluster data with outliers and noise, to critically study how some of the most known validation indices behave. The main goal of this work is however to combine semi-supervised clustering with subspace clustering to obtain clustering solutions that can be correctly validated by using either known indices or expert opinions. Two different algorithms are proposed from different points of view to discover clusters characterized by different subspaces. For the first algorithm, available data labels are used for searching for subspaces firstly, before searching for clusters. This algorithm assigns each instance to only one cluster (hard clustering) and is based on mapping known labels to subspaces using supervised classification techniques. Subspaces are then used to find clusters using traditional clustering techniques. The second algorithm uses available data labels to search for subspaces and clusters at the same time in an iterative process. This algorithm assigns each instance to each cluster based on a membership probability (soft clustering) and is based on integrating known labels and the search for subspaces into a model-based clustering approach. The different proposals are tested using different real and synthetic databases, and comparisons to other methods are also included when appropriate. Finally, as an example of real and current application, different machine learning tech¬niques, including one of the proposals of this work (the most sophisticated one) are applied to a task of one of the most challenging biological problems nowadays, the human brain model¬ing. Specifically, expert neuroscientists do not agree with a neuron classification for the brain cortex, which makes impossible not only any modeling attempt but also the day-to-day work without a common way to name neurons. Therefore, machine learning techniques may help to get an accepted solution to this problem, which can be an important milestone for future research in neuroscience. Resumen Las técnicas de aprendizaje automático se usan para extraer información valiosa de datos. Hoy en día, la importancia de estas técnicas está siendo incluso mayor, debido a que la evolución en la adquisición y almacenamiento de datos está llevando a datos con diferentes características que deben ser explotadas. Por lo tanto, los avances en la recolección de datos deben ir ligados a avances en las técnicas de aprendizaje automático para resolver nuevos retos que pueden aparecer, tanto en aplicaciones académicas como reales. Existen varias técnicas de aprendizaje automático dependiendo de las características de los datos y del propósito. La clasificación no supervisada o clustering es una de las técnicas más conocidas cuando los datos carecen de supervisión (datos sin etiqueta), siendo el objetivo descubrir nuevos grupos (agrupaciones) dependiendo de la similitud de los datos. Por otra parte, la clasificación supervisada necesita datos con supervisión (datos etiquetados) y su objetivo es realizar predicciones sobre las etiquetas de nuevos datos. La presencia de las etiquetas es una característica muy importante que guía no solo el aprendizaje sino también otras tareas relacionadas como la validación. Cuando solo algunos de los datos disponibles están etiquetados, mientras que el resto permanece sin etiqueta (datos parcialmente etiquetados), ni el clustering ni la clasificación supervisada se pueden utilizar. Este escenario, que está llegando a ser común hoy en día debido a la ignorancia o el coste del proceso de etiquetado, es abordado utilizando técnicas de aprendizaje semi-supervisadas. Esta tesis trata la rama del aprendizaje semi-supervisado más cercana al clustering, es decir, descubrir agrupaciones utilizando las etiquetas disponibles como apoyo para guiar y mejorar el proceso de clustering. Otra característica importante de los datos, distinta de la presencia de etiquetas, es la relevancia o no de los atributos de los datos. Los datos se caracterizan por atributos, pero es posible que no todos ellos sean relevantes, o igualmente relevantes, para el proceso de aprendizaje. Una tendencia reciente en clustering, relacionada con la relevancia de los datos y llamada clustering en subespacios, afirma que agrupaciones diferentes pueden estar descritas por subconjuntos de atributos diferentes. Esto difiere de las soluciones tradicionales para el problema de la relevancia de los datos, en las que se busca un único subconjunto de atributos (normalmente el conjunto original de atributos) y se utiliza para realizar el proceso de clustering. La cercanía de este trabajo con el clustering lleva al primer objetivo de la tesis. Como se ha comentado previamente, la validación en clustering es una tarea difícil debido a la ausencia de etiquetas. Aunque existen muchos índices que pueden usarse para evaluar la calidad de las soluciones de clustering, estas validaciones dependen de los algoritmos de clustering utilizados y de las características de los datos. Por lo tanto, en el primer objetivo tres conocidos algoritmos se usan para agrupar datos con valores atípicos y ruido para estudiar de forma crítica cómo se comportan algunos de los índices de validación más conocidos. El objetivo principal de este trabajo sin embargo es combinar clustering semi-supervisado con clustering en subespacios para obtener soluciones de clustering que puedan ser validadas de forma correcta utilizando índices conocidos u opiniones expertas. Se proponen dos algoritmos desde dos puntos de vista diferentes para descubrir agrupaciones caracterizadas por diferentes subespacios. Para el primer algoritmo, las etiquetas disponibles se usan para bus¬car en primer lugar los subespacios antes de buscar las agrupaciones. Este algoritmo asigna cada instancia a un único cluster (hard clustering) y se basa en mapear las etiquetas cono-cidas a subespacios utilizando técnicas de clasificación supervisada. El segundo algoritmo utiliza las etiquetas disponibles para buscar de forma simultánea los subespacios y las agru¬paciones en un proceso iterativo. Este algoritmo asigna cada instancia a cada cluster con una probabilidad de pertenencia (soft clustering) y se basa en integrar las etiquetas conocidas y la búsqueda en subespacios dentro de clustering basado en modelos. Las propuestas son probadas utilizando diferentes bases de datos reales y sintéticas, incluyendo comparaciones con otros métodos cuando resulten apropiadas. Finalmente, a modo de ejemplo de una aplicación real y actual, se aplican diferentes técnicas de aprendizaje automático, incluyendo una de las propuestas de este trabajo (la más sofisticada) a una tarea de uno de los problemas biológicos más desafiantes hoy en día, el modelado del cerebro humano. Específicamente, expertos neurocientíficos no se ponen de acuerdo en una clasificación de neuronas para la corteza cerebral, lo que imposibilita no sólo cualquier intento de modelado sino también el trabajo del día a día al no tener una forma estándar de llamar a las neuronas. Por lo tanto, las técnicas de aprendizaje automático pueden ayudar a conseguir una solución aceptada para este problema, lo cual puede ser un importante hito para investigaciones futuras en neurociencia.

The purpose of this study is to set up the basis needed to develop real applications designed for the control and management of heterogeneous fleets. This paper tries to present some programming patterns which will lead to the design and development of good quality applications. The premise for this purpose should be the design of scalable, platform independent, modular and user friendly programs which require very small maintenance and if possible to give the ability to nonprogrammer users the ability to extend the application beyond their original design. To achieve it, a web design with the use of content management system following a model-view-controller architectural pattern has been purposed.

Although the computational complexity of the logic underlying the standard OWL 2 for the Web Ontology Language (OWL) appears discouraging for real applications, several contributions have shown that reasoning with OWL ontologies is feasible in practice. It turns out that reasoning in practice is often far less complex than is suggested by the established theoretical complexity bound, which reflects the worstcase scenario. State-of-the reasoners like FACT++, HERMIT, PELLET and RACER have demonstrated that, even with fairly expressive fragments of OWL 2, acceptable performances can be achieved. However, it is still not well understood why reasoning is feasible in practice and it is rather unclear how to study this problem. In this paper, we suggest first steps that in our opinion could lead to a better understanding of practical complexity. We also provide and discuss some initial empirical results with HERMIT on prominent ontologies

The goal of the RAP-WAM AND-parallel Prolog abstract architecture is to provide inference speeds significantly beyond those of sequential systems, while supporting Prolog semantics and preserving sequential performance and storage efficiency. This paper presents simulation results supporting these claims with special emphasis on memory performance on a two-level sharedmemory multiprocessor organization. Several solutions to the cache coherency problem are analyzed. It is shown that RAP-WAM offers good locality and storage efficiency and that it can effectively take advantage of broadcast caches. It is argued that speeds in excess of 2 ML IPS on real applications exhibiting medium parallelism can be attained with current technology.

La presente Tesis proporciona una gran cantidad de información con respecto al uso de un nuevo y avanzado material polimérico (con base de poliolefina) especialmente adecuada para ser usada en forma de fibras como adición en el hormigón. Se han empleado fibras de aproximadamente 1 mm de diámetro, longitudes entre 48 y 60 mm y una superficie corrugada. Las prometedoras propiedades de este material (baja densidad, bajo coste, buen comportamiento resistente y gran estabilidad química) justifican el interés en desarrollar el esfuerzo de investigación requerido para demostrar las ventajas de su uso en aplicaciones prácticas. La mayor parte de la investigación se ha realizado usando hormigón autocompactante como matriz, ya que este material es óptimo para el relleno de los encofrados del hormigón, aunque también se ha empleado hormigón normal vibrado con el fin de comparar algunas propiedades. Además, el importante desarrollo del hormigón reforzado con fibras en los últimos años, tanto en investigación como en aplicaciones prácticas, también es muestra del gran interés que los resultados y consideraciones de diseño que esta Tesis pueden tener. El material compuesto resultante, Hormigón Reforzado con Fibras de Poliolefina (HRFP o PFRC por sus siglas inglesas) ha sido exhaustivamente ensayado y estudiado en muchos aspectos. Los resultados permiten establecer cómo conseguidos los objetivos buscados: -Se han cuantificado las propiedades mecánicas del PFRC con el fin de demostrar su buen comportamiento en la fase fisurada de elementos estructurales sometidos a tensiones de tracción. -Contrastar los resultados obtenidos con las bases propuestas en la normativa existente y evaluar las posibilidades para el uso del PFRC con fin estructural para sustituir el armado tradicional con barras de acero corrugado para determinadas aplicaciones. -Se han desarrollado herramientas de cálculo con el fin de evaluar la capacidad del PFRC para sustituir al hormigón armado con las barras habituales de acero. -En base a la gran cantidad de ensayos experimentales y a alguna aplicación real en la construcción, se han podido establecer recomendaciones y consejos de diseño para que elementos de este material puedan ser proyectados y construidos con total fiabilidad. Se presentan, además, resultados prometedores en una nueva línea de trabajo en el campo del hormigón reforzado con fibras combinando dos tipologías de fibras. Se combinaron fibras de poliolefina con fibras de acero como refuerzo del mismo hormigón autocompactante detectándose sinergias que podrían ser la base del uso futuro de esta tecnología de hormigón. This thesis provides a significant amount of information on the use of a new advanced polymer (polyolefin-based) especially suitable in the form of fibres to be added to concrete. At the time of writing, there is a noteworthy lack of research and knowledge about use as a randomly distributed element to reinforce concrete. Fibres with an approximate 1 mm diameter, length of 48-60 mm, an embossed surface and improved mechanical properties are employed. The promising properties of the polyolefin material (low density, inexpensive, and with good strength behaviour and high chemical stability) justify the research effort involved and demonstrate the advantages for practical purposes. While most of the research has used self-compacting concrete, given that this type of matrix material is optimum in filling the concrete formwork, for comparison purposes standard vibration compacted mixes have also been used. In addition, the interest in fibre-reinforced concrete technology, in both research and application, support the significant interest in the results and considerations provided by the thesis. The resulting composite material, polyolefin fibre reinforced concrete (PFRC) has been extensively tested and studied. The results have allowed the following objectives to be met: -Assessment of the mechanical properties of PFRC in order to demonstrate the good performance in the post-cracking strength for structural elements subjected to tensile stresses. -- Assessment of the results in contrast with the existing structural codes, regulations and test methods. The evaluation of the potential of PFRC to meet the requirements and replace traditional steel-bar reinforcement applications. -Development of numerical tools designed to evaluate the capability of PFRC to substitute, either partially or totally, standard steel reinforcing bars either alone or in conjunction with steel fibres. -Provision, based on the large amount of experimental work and real applications, of a series of guidelines and recommendations for the practical and reliable design and use of PFRC. Furthermore, the thesis also reports promising results about an innovative line in the field of fibre-reinforced concrete: the design of a fibre cocktail to reinforce the concrete by using two types of fibres simultaneously. Polyolefin fibres were combined with steel fibres in self-compacting concrete, identifying synergies that could serve as the base in the future use of fibre-reinforced concrete technology.

El objetivo de esta tesis es el desarrollo y caracterización de biosensores ópticos sin marcado basados en celdas sensoras biofotónicas (BICELLs). Éstas son un nuevo concepto de biosensor desarrollado por el grupo de investigación y consiste en la combinación de técnicas de interrogación vertical, junto a estructuras fotónicas producidas usando métodos de micro- y nanofabricación. Varias conclusiones son extraídas de este trabajo. La primera, que se ha definido una BICELL estándar basada en interferómetros Fabry-Perot (FP). Se ha demostrado su capacidad para la comparación de rendimiento entre BICELLs estructuradas y para la realización de inmunoensayos de bajo coste. Se han estudiado diferentes técnicas de fabricación disponibles para la producción de BICELLs. Se determinó que la litografía de contacto a nivel de oblea produce estructuras de bajo coste, reproducibles y de alta calidad. La resolución alcanzada ha sido de 700 nm. El estudio de la respuesta a inmunoensayos de las BICELLs producidas se ha desarrollado en este trabajo. Se estudió la influencia de BICELLs basadas en diferentes geometrías y tamaños. De aquí resulta un nuevo enfoque para predecir el comportamiento de respuesta para la detección biológica de cualquier biosensor óptico estructurado, relacionando su superficie efectiva y su sensibilidad óptica. También se demostró una técnica novedosa y de bajo coste para la caracterización experimental de la sensibilidad óptica, basada en el depósito de películas ultradelgadas. Finalmente, se ha demostrado el uso de BICELLs desarrolladas en esta tesis, en la detección de aplicaciones reales, tales como hormonas, virus y proteínas. ABSTRACT The objective of this thesis is the development and characterization of optical label-free biosensors based on Bio-Photonic sensing Cells (BICELLs). BICELL is a novel biosensor concept developed by the research group, and it consists of a combination of vertical interrogation optical techniques and photonic structures produced by using micro- and nano-fabrication methods. Several main conclusions are extracted from this work. Firstly, a standard BICELL is defined based on FP interferometers, which demonstrated its capacity for accomplishing performance comparisons among different structured BICELLs, as well as to achieve low-cost immunoassays. Different available fabrication techniques were studied for BICELL manufacturing. It is found that contact lithography at wafer scale produce cost-effective, reproducible and high quality structures. The resolution achieved was 700 nm. Study on the response of developed BICELLs to immunoassays is performed within this work. It is therefore studied the influence of BICELLs based on different geometries and sizes in the immunoassay, which resulted in a new approach to predict the biosensing behaviour of any structured optical biosensor relating to its effective surface and optical sensitivity. Also, it is demonstrated a novel and low-cost characterization technique of the experimental optical sensitivity, based on ultrathin-film deposition. Finally, it is also demonstrated the capability of using the developed BICELLs in this thesis for real applications detection of hormones, virus and proteins.

Nowadays robots have made their way into real applications that were prohibitive and unthinkable thirty years ago. This is mainly due to the increase in power computations and the evolution in the theoretical field of robotics and control. Even though there is plenty of information in the current literature on this topics, it is not easy to find clear concepts of how to proceed in order to design and implement a controller for a robot. In general, the design of a controller requires of a complete understanding and knowledge of the system to be controlled. Therefore, for advanced control techniques the systems must be first identified. Once again this particular objective is cumbersome and is never straight forward requiring of great expertise and some criteria must be adopted. On the other hand, the particular problem of designing a controller is even more complex when dealing with Parallel Manipulators (PM), since their closed-loop structures give rise to a highly nonlinear system. Under this basis the current work is developed, which intends to resume and gather all the concepts and experiences involve for the control of an Hydraulic Parallel Manipulator. The main objective of this thesis is to provide a guide remarking all the steps involve in the designing of advanced control technique for PMs. The analysis of the PM under study is minced up to the core of the mechanism: the hydraulic actuators. The actuators are modeled and experimental identified. Additionally, some consideration regarding traditional PID controllers are presented and an adaptive controller is finally implemented. From a macro perspective the kinematic and dynamic model of the PM are presented. Based on the model of the system and extending the adaptive controller of the actuator, a control strategy for the PM is developed and its performance is analyzed with simulation.

This paper proposes an emotion transplantation method capable of modifying a synthetic speech model through the use of CSMAPLR adaptation in order to incorporate emotional information learned from a different speaker model while maintaining the identity of the original speaker as much as possible. The proposed method relies on learning both emotional and speaker identity information by means of their adaptation function from an average voice model, and combining them into a single cascade transform capable of imbuing the desired emotion into the target speaker. This method is then applied to the task of transplanting four emotions (anger, happiness, sadness and surprise) into 3 male speakers and 3 female speakers and evaluated in a number of perceptual tests. The results of the evaluations show how the perceived naturalness for emotional text significantly favors the use of the proposed transplanted emotional speech synthesis when compared to traditional neutral speech synthesis, evidenced by a big increase in the perceived emotional strength of the synthesized utterances at a slight cost in speech quality. A final evaluation with a robotic laboratory assistant application shows how by using emotional speech we can significantly increase the students’ satisfaction with the dialog system, proving how the proposed emotion transplantation system provides benefits in real applications.

Here, a novel and efficient strategy for moving object detection by non-parametric modeling on smart cameras is presented. Whereas the background is modeled using only color information, the foreground model combines color and spatial information. The application of a particle filter allows the update of the spatial information and provides a priori information about the areas to analyze in the following images, enabling an important reduction in the computational requirements and improving the segmentation results

This paper presents an automatic modulation classifier for electronic warfare applications. It is a pattern recognition modulation classifier based on statistical features of the phase and instantaneous frequency. This classifier runs in a real time operation mode with sampling rates in excess of 1 Gsample/s. The hardware platform for this application is a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). This AMC is subsidiary of a digital channelised receiver also implemented in the same platform.

However, people with disabilities have to face a lot of barriers when using this kind of technology. This paper presents an Accessible Contact Manager and a Real Time Text application, designed to be used by all users with disabilities. Both applications are focused to improve accessibility of mobile phones.

The last generation of consumer electronic devices is endowed with Augmented Reality (AR) tools. These tools require moving object detection strategies, which should be fast and efficient, to carry out higher level object analysis tasks. We propose a lightweight spatio-temporal-based non-parametric background-foreground modeling strategy in a General Purpose Graphics Processing Unit (GPGPU), which provides real-time high-quality results in a great variety of scenarios and is suitable for AR applications.

Distributed real-time embedded systems are becoming increasingly important to society. More demands will be made on them and greater reliance will be placed on the delivery of their services. A relevant subset of them is high-integrity or hard real-time systems, where failure can cause loss of life, environmental harm, or significant financial loss. Additionally, the evolution of communication networks and paradigms as well as the necessity of demanding processing power and fault tolerance, motivated the interconnection between electronic devices; many of the communications have the possibility of transferring data at a high speed. The concept of distributed systems emerged as systems where different parts are executed on several nodes that interact with each other via a communication network. Java’s popularity, facilities and platform independence have made it an interesting language for the real-time and embedded community. This was the motivation for the development of RTSJ (Real-Time Specification for Java), which is a language extension intended to allow the development of real-time systems. The use of Java in the development of high-integrity systems requires strict development and testing techniques. However, RTJS includes a number of language features that are forbidden in such systems. In the context of the HIJA project, the HRTJ (Hard Real-Time Java) profile was developed to define a robust subset of the language that is amenable to static analysis for high-integrity system certification. Currently, a specification under the Java community process (JSR- 302) is being developed. Its purpose is to define those capabilities needed to create safety critical applications with Java technology called Safety Critical Java (SCJ). However, neither RTSJ nor its profiles provide facilities to develop distributed realtime applications. This is an important issue, as most of the current and future systems will be distributed. The Distributed RTSJ (DRTSJ) Expert Group was created under the Java community process (JSR-50) in order to define appropriate abstractions to overcome this problem. Currently there is no formal specification. The aim of this thesis is to develop a communication middleware that is suitable for the development of distributed hard real-time systems in Java, based on the integration between the RMI (Remote Method Invocation) model and the HRTJ profile. It has been designed and implemented keeping in mind the main requirements such as the predictability and reliability in the timing behavior and the resource usage. iThe design starts with the definition of a computational model which identifies among other things: the communication model, most appropriate underlying network protocols, the analysis model, and a subset of Java for hard real-time systems. In the design, the remote references are the basic means for building distributed applications which are associated with all non-functional parameters and resources needed to implement synchronous or asynchronous remote invocations with real-time attributes. The proposed middleware separates the resource allocation from the execution itself by defining two phases and a specific threading mechanism that guarantees a suitable timing behavior. It also includes mechanisms to monitor the functional and the timing behavior. It provides independence from network protocol defining a network interface and modules. The JRMP protocol was modified to include two phases, non-functional parameters, and message size optimizations. Although serialization is one of the fundamental operations to ensure proper data transmission, current implementations are not suitable for hard real-time systems and there are no alternatives. This thesis proposes a predictable serialization that introduces a new compiler to generate optimized code according to the computational model. The proposed solution has the advantage of allowing us to schedule the communications and to adjust the memory usage at compilation time. In order to validate the design and the implementation a demanding validation process was carried out with emphasis in the functional behavior, the memory usage, the processor usage (the end-to-end response time and the response time in each functional block) and the network usage (real consumption according to the calculated consumption). The results obtained in an industrial application developed by Thales Avionics (a Flight Management System) and in exhaustive tests show that the design and the prototype are reliable for industrial applications with strict timing requirements. Los sistemas empotrados y distribuidos de tiempo real son cada vez más importantes para la sociedad. Su demanda aumenta y cada vez más dependemos de los servicios que proporcionan. Los sistemas de alta integridad constituyen un subconjunto de gran importancia. Se caracterizan por que un fallo en su funcionamiento puede causar pérdida de vidas humanas, daños en el medio ambiente o cuantiosas pérdidas económicas. La necesidad de satisfacer requisitos temporales estrictos, hace más complejo su desarrollo. Mientras que los sistemas empotrados se sigan expandiendo en nuestra sociedad, es necesario garantizar un coste de desarrollo ajustado mediante el uso técnicas adecuadas en su diseño, mantenimiento y certificación. En concreto, se requiere una tecnología flexible e independiente del hardware. La evolución de las redes y paradigmas de comunicación, así como la necesidad de mayor potencia de cómputo y de tolerancia a fallos, ha motivado la interconexión de dispositivos electrónicos. Los mecanismos de comunicación permiten la transferencia de datos con alta velocidad de transmisión. En este contexto, el concepto de sistema distribuido ha emergido como sistemas donde sus componentes se ejecutan en varios nodos en paralelo y que interactúan entre ellos mediante redes de comunicaciones. Un concepto interesante son los sistemas de tiempo real neutrales respecto a la plataforma de ejecución. Se caracterizan por la falta de conocimiento de esta plataforma durante su diseño. Esta propiedad es relevante, por que conviene que se ejecuten en la mayor variedad de arquitecturas, tienen una vida media mayor de diez anos y el lugar ˜ donde se ejecutan puede variar. El lenguaje de programación Java es una buena base para el desarrollo de este tipo de sistemas. Por este motivo se ha creado RTSJ (Real-Time Specification for Java), que es una extensión del lenguaje para permitir el desarrollo de sistemas de tiempo real. Sin embargo, RTSJ no proporciona facilidades para el desarrollo de aplicaciones distribuidas de tiempo real. Es una limitación importante dado que la mayoría de los actuales y futuros sistemas serán distribuidos. El grupo DRTSJ (DistributedRTSJ) fue creado bajo el proceso de la comunidad de Java (JSR-50) con el fin de definir las abstracciones que aborden dicha limitación, pero en la actualidad aun no existe una especificacion formal. El objetivo de esta tesis es desarrollar un middleware de comunicaciones para el desarrollo de sistemas distribuidos de tiempo real en Java, basado en la integración entre el modelo de RMI (Remote Method Invocation) y el perfil HRTJ. Ha sido diseñado e implementado teniendo en cuenta los requisitos principales, como la predecibilidad y la confiabilidad del comportamiento temporal y el uso de recursos. El diseño parte de la definición de un modelo computacional el cual identifica entre otras cosas: el modelo de comunicaciones, los protocolos de red subyacentes más adecuados, el modelo de análisis, y un subconjunto de Java para sistemas de tiempo real crítico. En el diseño, las referencias remotas son el medio básico para construcción de aplicaciones distribuidas las cuales son asociadas a todos los parámetros no funcionales y los recursos necesarios para la ejecución de invocaciones remotas síncronas o asíncronas con atributos de tiempo real. El middleware propuesto separa la asignación de recursos de la propia ejecución definiendo dos fases y un mecanismo de hebras especifico que garantiza un comportamiento temporal adecuado. Además se ha incluido mecanismos para supervisar el comportamiento funcional y temporal. Se ha buscado independencia del protocolo de red definiendo una interfaz de red y módulos específicos. También se ha modificado el protocolo JRMP para incluir diferentes fases, parámetros no funcionales y optimizaciones de los tamaños de los mensajes. Aunque la serialización es una de las operaciones fundamentales para asegurar la adecuada transmisión de datos, las actuales implementaciones no son adecuadas para sistemas críticos y no hay alternativas. Este trabajo propone una serialización predecible que ha implicado el desarrollo de un nuevo compilador para la generación de código optimizado acorde al modelo computacional. La solución propuesta tiene la ventaja que en tiempo de compilación nos permite planificar las comunicaciones y ajustar el uso de memoria. Con el objetivo de validar el diseño e implementación se ha llevado a cabo un exigente proceso de validación con énfasis en: el comportamiento funcional, el uso de memoria, el uso del procesador (tiempo de respuesta de extremo a extremo y en cada uno de los bloques funcionales) y el uso de la red (consumo real conforme al estimado). Los buenos resultados obtenidos en una aplicación industrial desarrollada por Thales Avionics (un sistema de gestión de vuelo) y en las pruebas exhaustivas han demostrado que el diseño y el prototipo son fiables para aplicaciones industriales con estrictos requisitos temporales.

Enabling real end-user programming development is the next logical stage in the evolution of Internetwide service-based applications. Even so, the vision of end users programming their own web-based solutions has not yet materialized. This will continue to be so unless both industry and the research community rise to the ambitious challenge of devising an end-to-end compositional model for developing a new age of end-user web application development tools. This paper describes a new composition model designed to empower programming-illiterate end users to create and share their own off-the-shelf rich Internet applications in a fully visual fashion. This paper presents the main insights and outcomes of our research and development efforts as part of a number of successful European Union research projects. A framework implementing this model was developed as part of the European Seventh Framework Programme FAST Project and the Spanish EzWeb Project and allowed us to validate the rationale behind our approach.

We describe a compact lightweight impulse radar for radio-echo sounding of subsurface structures designed specifically for glaciological applications. The radar operates at frequencies between 10 and 75 MHz. Its main advantages are that it has a high signal-to-noise ratio and a corresponding wide dynamic range of 132 dB due mainly to its ability to perform real-time stacking (up to 4096 traces) as well as to the high transmitted power (peak voltage 2800 V). The maximum recording time window, 40 ?s at 100 MHz sampling frequency, results in possible radar returns from as deep as 3300 m. It is a versatile radar, suitable for different geophysical measurements (common-offset profiling, common midpoint, transillumination, etc.) and for different profiling set-ups, such as a snowmobile and sledge convoy or carried in a backpack and operated by a single person. Its low power consumption (6.6 W for the transmitter and 7.5 W for the receiver) allows the system to operate under battery power for mayor que7 hours with a total weight of menor que9 kg for all equipment, antennas and batteries.
