The general aim of this Thesis was to study two management methods (early weaning and extensive reproductive rhythm) linked to the energy balance of the primiparous rabbit does to improve their reproductive performance. In this sense, 2 experiments were conducted using this kind of females. In the first experiment, the effect of weaning at 25 days post-partum (dpp) on ovarian activity and energetic metabolism one week later (32 dpp) was studied. A total of 34 primiparous lactating rabbit does were used and distributed among three groups: 10 does euthanized at 25 dpp (group L25), 13 does weaned at 25 dpp and euthanized at 32 dpp (group NL32), and 11 non weaned does euthanized at 32 dpp (group L32). No significant differences were observed in live body weight, ovary weight, serum non esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and total protein concentration among groups. Although NL32 does had a low feed intake (122±23.5 g/Day; P < 0.001), their estimated lipids (16.9±1.09%, P < 0.008), protein (19.7±0.07%, P < 0.0001), and energy (1147±42.7 MJ/kg, P < 0.006) body contents were higher and their serum glucose concentrations (158±24.5 mg/dl, P < 0.04) were lower compared to L25 does (11.9±1.3%, 18.5±0.08%, 942±51.3 MJ/kg and 212±27.9 mg/dl) and L32 does (13.4±1.03%, 18.5±0.1%, 993±40.4 MJ/kg and 259±29.5 mg/dl, respectively). A lower number of follicles ≥1mm was observed compared to NL32 and L32 groups (12.7±1.5 vs. 18.0±1.45 and 17.6 ±1.67; P < 0.05) in the ovarian surface of L25 does. Follicular population in the histological ovarian sections and immunolocalization of prolactin receptor were similar in all groups. In group L25, both nuclear maturation of oocytes in terms of Metaphase II rate (67.0 vs. 79.7 and 78.3%; P < 0.05) and cytoplasmic maturation measured by percentage of cortical granules (CG), totally or partially migrated in oocytes were significantly lower than in groups NL32 and L32 (16.0 vs. 38.3 and 60.0%; P < 0.05). Consequently, a higher rate of oocytes with non-migrated CGs was found in group L25 than in groups NL32 and L32 (76.0 vs. 46.8 and 33.3%; P < 0.05). In conclusion, even though early weaning at 25 dpp seemed to improve body energy stored in primiparous does, this fact was not well reflected on the ovarian status at 32 dpp, which was similar regardless of weaning time. In the second experiment, two reproductive rhythms were compared. A total of 48 primiparous Californian x New Zealand White rabbit does suckling 8 kits were randomly allocated in two experimental groups: a) lactating does euthanized at early post-partum period (11 dpp) according to a semi-intensive rhythm (n = 24), and b) lactating does euthanized on later post-partum period (25 dpp) according to a more extensive rhythm (n = 24). Live weight, estimated body composition, serum metabolic and endocrine parameters (oestradiol and progesterone concentrations) and ovarian features like follicle population and atresia rate, and oocyte maturation were studied. Live weight, body energy content, lipid depots and serum non esterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentrations diminished from parturition time to post-partum period (P < 0.05). In addition, serum protein and glucose concentrations increased along postpartum time (P < 0.05). Similar oestradiol and progesterone levels were shown in rhythms as well as similar follicle population and nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation rates measured as metaphase II and cortical granule migration, respectively in both postpartum times. However, number of preovulatory follicles on the ovarian surface was lower (P < 0.05) and atresia rate tended to be higher with also lower percentage of healthy follicles (P < 0.1) in ovaries of females of extensive group. In conclusion, primiparous non-weaned rabbits does at late post-partum time (25 days), Did no show any improvement regarding body reserves, serum metabolic parameters and oocyte quality; even a slight negative influence has been observed in the development of their ovarian follicles. Thus this reproductive management does not present any advantage compared to earlier post-partum (11 days) reproductive rhythm. In summary, according to the obtained results from these two experiments, we can say that the application of early weaning and the extensive rhythms did not achieve an improvement in the reproductive performance of primiparous does. Thus, it is necessary to conduct more studies about the metabolic status of the primiparous lactating doe to achieve strategies in order to improve it and consequently, to improve the reproductive activity and their productive success.

We hypothesize that pullets could respond similarly, independent of feed form, to the feeding of diets based on corn or wheat supplemented with adequate NSP enzymes. Also, pullets would quickly adapt their gastrointestinal tract and modify productive performance accordingly, when switched from crumbles to mash feeds. The aim of this research was to evaluate the effects of feeding crumbles for different periods of time, followed by feeding mash to 17 wk of age, on performance, gastrointestinal tract development, and body measurements of brown-egg laying pullets fed diets based on corn or wheat.

Advanced wheat lines carrying the Hessian fly resistance gene H27 were obtained by backcrossing the wheat/Aegilops ventricosa introgression line, H-93-33, to commercial wheat cultivars as recurrent parents. The Acph-N v 1 marker linked to the gene H27 on the 4Nv chromosome of this line was used for marker assisted selection. Advanced lines were evaluated for Hessian fly resistance in field and growth chamber tests, and for other agronomic traits during several crop seasons at different localities of Spain. The hessian fly resistance levels of lines carrying the 4Nv chromosome introgression (4D/4Nv substitution and recombination lines that previously were classified by in situ hybridisation) were high, but always lower than that of their Ae. ventricosa progenitor. Introgression lines had higher grain yields in infested field trials than those without the 4Nv chromosome and their susceptible parents, but lower grain yields under high yield potential conditions. The 4Nv introgression was also associated with later heading, and lower tiller and grain numbers/m2 . In addition, it was associated with longer and more lax spikes, and higher values of grain weight and grain protein content. However, the glutenin and gliadin expression, as well as the bread-making performance, were similar to those of their recurrent parents

ABSTRACT The general aim of this PhD Thesis was to evaluate new housing and husbandry systems of farmed rabbits, studying behavioral (experiment 1), productive and reproductive (experiment 3) parameters. Moreover, different sampling techniques were evaluated in order to optimize the assessment of rabbit behaviour (experiment 2). In experiment 1, the behaviour of rabbit does housed in two different types of cage (TC), conventional vs. alternative with an elevated platform, at different physiological stages (PS), lactation and gestation was to study. Behavioural observations were carried out on 12 commercial rabbit does using continuous 24 hour video recording. Independently of PS and TC, rabbit does spent most of their time on foot mats (57.7 %, as average). However, due to the use of platforms (23.0% of time, as average), lactating does spent 36.6% less time (P<0.001) on foot mats and gestating does spent 27.0% less (P<0.001) time on wire mesh in alternative cages than in conventional cages. Alternative cages allowed for standing posture but this behaviour was only observed in gestating does (4.6 times a day, as average). Frequency of drinking was higher in conventional than in alternative cages (24.6 vs. 19.1 times a day; P<0.05). Gestating does housed in conventional cages reached the highest duration and frequency of interacting with neighbours (276 s/d and 4.6 times/d; P<0.05). The frequency of interacting with kits was lower in alternative than in conventional cages (2.4 vs. 8.6 times a day; P<0.01). Does’ behaviour was influenced by hour of day, being less active at the midday hours. During dark hours rabbit does more frequently performed restless behaviour such as hyperactivity or nursing, matching the time at which rabbit does spent more time on the platform. The platform was frequently used by rabbit does, independent of their physiological state, and during late lactation phase, when mothers were not receptive to nursing, does housed in alternative cages used the platform as a mean to flee from kids trying to suckle. The use of the platform might lead to hygienic problems due to retained faeces on the platform and faeces and urine falling onto animals located in the lower part of the cage. Stereotypies were not observed in any housing system, therefore conventional cages do not suggest lack of animal welfare. In experiment 2, it was compared the results of different simplified sampling methods of behavioural data with respect to reference records of 24-h in order to assess rabbit does behaviours at different physiological stages (gestation and lactation) in animals housed in two types of cages (conventional and alternative). A total of 576 h of continuous video of 12 rabbit does at the end of lactation and on the same females after weaning were analysed. The behavioural observations were studied using three independent categories of classification (location in the cage, posture and functional behaviours). Continuous behavioural recordings of 24 h were considered as the reference method to validate another 4 sampling methods of data collection by aggregated video recordings of different frequency and duration (regular short and long methods with 2.4 and 8 h of observation respectively, and irregular short and long methods with 6 and 8 h of observation, respectively). The current results showed that, independently of housing system, the best method to reduce the total observation time required to assess rabbit does behaviour depends on the trait studied and physiological stage of does. In gestating does, irregular methods were not suitable to estimate behaviours of long duration such as lying, sitting, resting and grooming. However, in both physiological stages, regular methods were accurate for location behaviours, postures and functional behaviours of long duration. Instead, for the study of infrequent behaviours performed mainly during dark period, where coefficients of variation were high, the irregular long method led to the lowest mean estimation errors. In experiment 3, the effects of the combined use of long lactation periods (46 days) with alternative cages on the reproductive and growth performance of 104 rabbit does and their litters during five consecutive reproductive cycles were studied. Half of does were housed in conventional polyvalent cages (39 cm x 100 cm x 30 cm) and the other half in alternative polyvalent cages (39 cm x 100 cm x 60 cm), with a raised platform. Half of the rabbit does in each type of cages were weaned at 32 and the other half at 46 days after parturition. Longer lactations affected negatively to body weight (P<0.001), fat and energy content (P<0.05) of rabbit does at the end of the lactation period, but this effect decreased with the number of parturitions. Fertility, prolificacy and doe mortality were not affected by lactation length. Late weaning led to higher litter size (by 8.9 %) and litter weight (by 11.3 %) at the end of growing period and lower feed conversion ratio per cage during the overall experimental period (13.5 %) than standard weaning (P<0.001). These results were parallels to a lower mortality (12.6 vs 17.6 %; P<0.05) of young rabbit weaned later during the overall experimental period. Differences in performances at different weaning ages were only observed during cycles with worst health status (third and fifth cycles) in which late weaning decreased mortality. Type of cage did not affect doe body weight and body condition, mortality, fertility, prolificacy and litter size during the five firsts reproductive cycles. Nevertheless, at day 21 litter weight and feed conversion ratio were 4.2 % higher (P<0.001) and 5.0 % lower (P<0.005) in animals housed in alternative than in conventional cages. Alternative cages also led to heavier litters at 59 days (P<0.01); however, this effect was influenced by density reached in each cycle, as when the density of animals was lower than 40 kg/m2 (cycles three and five), the difference of litter weight between alternative and conventional cages was not significant. From the results obtained it can be concluded that the combined use of longer lactations and cages with higher available surface with a raised platform could be an alternative to improve animal welfare in some productive situations.

ABSTRACT The general objective of this Thesis was to study the effect of different nutritional factors on productive performance and the development of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of commercial brown egg-laying pullets from 1 to 120 d of age. In this respect, the influence of type and particle size of the cereal, and feed form, and energy content of the die,t were studied in 3 experiments. In experiment 1, the influence of the main cereal and feed form of the diet on performance and GIT traits was studied in 576 brown-egg laying pullets from 1 to 120 d of age. From 1 to 45 d of age, 4 diets arranged factorially with 2 cereals (maize vs. wheat) and 2 feed forms (mash vs. pellets) were used. Each treatment was replicated 6 times (24 pullets per replicate). From 46 to 120 d of age, all diets were offered in mash form and therefore, the only difference among diets was the cereal used. Cumulatively, pullets fed the maize diets had higher body weight (BW) gain (P< 0.05) but similar feed conversion ratio (FCR) than pullets fed the wheat diets. From 1 to 45 d of age, pullets fed pellets consumed more feed (P < 0.001) and had higher BW gain (P < 0.001) than pullets fed mash. Most of the beneficial effects of pelleting on productive performance of the birds were still evident at 120 d of age. At 45 d of age, gizzard relative weight (RW; g/kg BW) was higher (P < 0.01) in pullets fed maize than in pullets fed wheat. Feeding pellets reduced the RW of the GIT and the gizzard (P < 0.001) as well as the relative length (RL; cm/kg BW) of the small intestine (SI, P < 0.01) at both ages. The pH of the gizzard contents at 120 d of age was not affected by the main cereal of the diet, but was lower in pullets fed mash from 1 to 45 d of age (P < 0.01) than in pullets fed pellets. We conclude that wheat supplemented with enzymes can be used in substitution of maize in pullet diets with only a slight reduction in BW gain at 120 d of age. Also, feeding pellets from 1 to 45 d of age increased BW gain and pH of the gizzard, and reduced the RW of the gizzard and the RL of the GIT at 120 d of age. In experiment 2, a total of 864 brown-egg laying pullets was used to study the effects of the main cereal of the diet (500 g maize or wheat/kg) and particle size of the cereal (hammer milled to pass through a 6, 8, and 10-mm screen) on growth performance and GIT traits from 1 to 120 d of age. Each of the 6 treatments was replicated 6 times (24 pullets per replicate). Type of cereal did not affect pullet performance at any age. From 1 to 45 d of age, BW gain was increased (P < 0.001) and FCR was improved (P < 0.05) as the particle size of the cereal was reduced, but no effects were observed after this age. At 45 d of age, pullets fed maize tended (P < 0.10) to have a heavier RW of the GIT and proventriculus and a higher relative length (RL, cm/kg BW) of the SI than pullets fed wheat. Also at this age, the RW of the GIT increased (P < 0.05) with increases in particle size of the cereal. At 120 d of age, dietary treatment did not affect the RW of any of the organs studied or gizzard pH, but the RL of the SI was higher (P < 0.05) for pullets fed wheat than for pullets fed maize. Also, the RL of the SI was reduced (P < 0.05) as the particle size of the cereal increased. We conclude that 500 g wheat/kg can be included in pullet feeds from 1 to 120 d of age, and that particle size of the cereal affects pullet performance during the first 45 d of life but not thereafter. Therefore, it is recommended to grind the cereal used in this period with a screen size of no more than 8-mm. In experiment 3, a total of 1,152 one-day-old Hy-Line Brown egg laying pullets were used to study the influence of the energy content of the diet and feed form on productive performance and on several GIT traits. From 1 to 45 d of age, there were 6 diets arranged factorially with 3 concentrations of AMEn (low: 11.66 MJ/kg, medium: 12.05 MJ/kg and high: 12.66 MJ/kg) of the diet and 2 feed forms (mash vs. pellets). From 45 to 120 d all diets were fed in mash form and therefore, the only difference among treatments in this period was the energy content of the diets. Each of the 6 treatments was replicated 8 times and the experimental unit was formed by 24 pullets. Cumulatively, BW gain and FCR improved as the AMEn of the diet increased (P < 0.001). Also, pullets fed pellets from 1 to 45 d of age had higher feed intake and BW gain (P < 0.001) in this period and higher cumulative BW gain (P < 0.01) than pullets fed mash. At 45 d of age, the RWof all the segments of the GIT was lower for pullets fed the high- than for pullets fed the medium- or low- energy diets. At 120 d of age, the RW of the gizzard was higher (P < 0.01) for pullets fed the low energy diets than for pullets fed the other diets. However, the RL of the GIT was not affected by the energy content of the diet. Feeding pellets reduced the RW of the proventriculus (P < 0.05), gizzard (P < 0.001), and GIT (P < 0.001), as well as the RL of the small intestine (P < 0.05) and the ceaca (P < 0.001) at 45 d of age. The effects of feeding pellets on RW of gizzard and proventriculus were still evident at 120 d of age. We concluded that feeding pellets from 1 to 45 d of age improved feed intake and BW of pullets at 120 d of age and that an increase in the energy content of the diet increased pullet performance at all ages but reduced the RW of the proventriculus and gizzard. We conclude that maize and wheat can be used indistinctly in diets for egg laying pullets from 1 to 120 d of age, with only a slight reduction in final BW when wheat is used. Also, particle size of the cereal affects pullet performance during the first 45 d of life but not thereafter. Pelleting of the feeds, and grinding the cereal with a screen size of no more than 8-mm from 1 to 45 d of age, and the use of high density energy diets are recommended in order to achieve adequate target BW at 120 d of age. However, pelleting of the feed, very fine grinding, and the use of high AMEn diets might hinder the development of the GIT, especially that of the gizzard, which might affect feed intake of laying hens especially at the beginning of the production cycle.

The objective of this study was to build up a data set including productive performance and production factors data of growing-finishing (GF) pigs in Spain in order to perform a representative and reliable description of the traits of Spanish growing-finishing pig industry. Data from 764 batches from 452 farms belonging to nine companies (1,157,212 pigs) were collected between 2008 and 2010 through a survey including five parts: general, facilities, feeding, health status and performance. Most studied farms had only GF pigs on their facilities (94.7%), produced ‘industrial’ pigs (86.7%), had entire male and female (59.5%) and Pietrain-sired pigs (70.0%), housed between 13-20 pigs per pen (87.2%), had  50% of slatted floor (70%), single-space dry feeder (54.0%), nipple drinker (88.7%) and automatic ventilation systems (71.2%). A 75.0% of the farms used three feeding phases using mainly pelleted diets (91.0%), 61.3% performed three or more antibiotic treatments and 36.5% obtained water from the public supply. Continuous variables studied had the following average values: number of pigs placed per batch, 1,515 pigs; initial and final body weight, 19.0 and 108 kg; length of GF period, 136 days; culling rate, 1.4%; barn occupation, 99.7%; feed intake per pig and fattening cycle, 244 kg; daily gain, 0.657 kg; feed conversion ratio, 2.77 kg kg-1 and mortality rate, 4.3%. Data reflecting the practical situation of the Spanish growing and finishing pig production and it may contribute to develop new strategies in order to improve the productive and economic efficiency of GF pig units.

Astragalus gines-lopezii Talavera, Podlech, Devesa & F.M.Vázquez (Fabaceae) is a threatened endemic species with a distribution restricted to a very small area in Badajoz Province (Extremadura Region, SW Spain) and only 2 populations are known. This species was catalogued in the ?Endangered? category in the 2008 Red List and the 2010 Threatened Spanish Vascular Flora List. Despite its status as an endangered species, at present very little is known about the distribution, census, and reproductive biology of this species. In this study we have carried out an exhaustive census of A. gines-lopezii , and we have evaluated the production of flowers, fruits, and seeds and the existence or not of intra- and interpopulation variability in seed germination. Results have highlighted the high reproductive capacity of this species on the basis of a high production of flowers, fruits, and seeds. Mechanical scarification of seeds was effective for increasing germination. Thus, initial germination (22%?60%) was increased to 97%?99% when seeds were rubbed with sandpapers. A high intra- and interpopulation variability in seed germination was found in this species. A. gines-lopezii produces seeds with different degrees of physical dormancy, varying this grade among different individuals within a population.

We investigated the effects of fiber inclusion in the diet on growth performance and digestive traits in pullets from hatching to 17 wk of age. The control diets of the 3 feeding periods (0 to 5 wk, 5 to 10 wk, and 10 to 17 wk) were based on corn and soybean meal and did not include any additional fiber source. The experimental diets included 2 or 4% of cereal straw or sugar beet pulp (SBP) at the expense (wt:wt) of the control diet. From 0 to 5 wk of age, fiber inclusion did not affect pullet performance. From hatch to 17 wk of age, the inclusion of straw had little effect on pullet performance but the inclusion of 4% SBP reduced (ADG) (P < 0.05) and reduced feed conversion ratio (FCR; P < 0.001). Pullets fed straw had greater ADG (P < 0.05) and better energy conversion ratio (P < 0.01) than pullets fed SBP. An increase in fiber from 2 to 4% reduced FCR (P < 0.05). Body weight uniformity was not affected by diet. Fiber inclusion increased the relative weight (% BW) of the gizzard at 5 wk (P = 0.056) and 10 wk (P < 0.01) of age, but no differences were detected between fiber sources. At same ages, the relative length (cm/kg BW) of the pullets (P = 0.058 and P < 0.01, respectively) and tarsus (P = 0.079 and P < 0.05, respectively) was higher in pullets fed SBP than in pullets fed straw. Fiber inclusion, however, did not affect any of these traits at 17 wk of age. In summary, the inclusion of 2% straw at the expense (wt:wt) of the whole diet did not affect pullet performance at 17 wk of age. An increase in the level of straw from 2 to 4% reduced FCR but did not affect ADG. The inclusion of SBP, however, reduced pullet growth, with effects being more pronounced at the higher level.
