The optimization of power architectures is a complex problem due to the plethora of different ways to connect various system components. This issue has been addressed by developing a methodology to design and optimize power architectures in terms of the most fundamental system features: size, cost and efficiency. The process assumes various simplifications regarding the utilized DC/DC converter models in order to prevent the simulation time to become excessive and, therefore, stability is not considered. The objective of this paper is to present a simplified method to analyze small-signal stability of a system in order to integrate it into the optimization methodology. A black-box modeling approach, applicable to commercial converters with unknown topology and components, is based on frequency response measurements enabling the system small-signal stability assessment. The applicability of passivity-based stability criterion is assessed. The stability margins are stated utilizing a concept of maximum peak criteria derived from the behavior of the impedance-based sensitivity function that provides a single number to state the robustness of the stability of a well-defined minor-loop gain.

Wireless power transfer (WPT) is an emerging technology with an increasing number of potential applications to transfer power from a transmitter to a mobile receiver over a relatively large air gap. However, its widespread application is hampered due to the relatively low efficiency of current Wireless power transfer (WPT) systems. This study presents a concept to maximize the efficiency as well as to increase the amount of extractable power of a WPT system operating in nonresonant operation. The proposed method is based on actively modifying the equivalent secondary-side load impedance by controlling the phase-shift of the active rectifier and its output voltage level. The presented hardware prototype represents a complete wireless charging system, including a dc-dc converter which is used to charge a battery at the output of the system. Experimental results are shown for the proposed concept in comparison to a conventional synchronous rectification approach. The presented optimization method clearly outperforms state-of-the-art solutions in terms of efficiency and extractable power.

This paper describes a practical activity, part of the renewable energy course where the students have to build their own complete wind generation system, including blades, PM-generator, power electronics and control. After connecting the system to the electric grid the system has been tested during real wind scenarios. The paper will describe the electric part of the work surface-mounted permanent magnet machine design criteria as well as the power electronics part for the power control and the grid connection. A Kalman filter is used for the voltage phase estimation and current commands obtained in order to control active and reactive power. The connection to the grid has been done and active and reactive power has been measured in the system.

Power amplifier supplied with constant supply voltage has very low efficiency in the transmitter. A DC-DC converter in series with a linear regulator can be used to obtain voltage modulation. Since this converter should be able to change the output voltage very fast, a multiphase buck converter with a minimum time control strategy is proposed. To modulate supply voltage of the envelope amplifier, the multiphase converter works with some particular duty cycle (i/n, i=1, 2 ... n, n is the number of phase) to generate discrete output voltages, and in these duty cycles the output current ripple can be completely cancelled. The transition times for the minimum time are pre-calculated and inserted in a look-up table. The theoretical background, the system model that is necessary in order to calculate the transition times and the experimental results obtained with a 4-phase buck prototype are given

The operation of a multiphase topology, ideally, without energy storage presents the advantage of achieving very high efficiency over a wide load range as well as a fast dynamic response. However, ideal no-energy storage operation also implies a limitation in the regulation capability of the topology, the output voltage can only take discrete values. These features (high efficiency and discrete regulation capability) of the proposed energy conversion strategy enable the topology as a candidate for `DC-DC transformer' applications. The advantages, drawbacks and the operating principle of this concept, implemented with a `closed chain' magnetic structure have been already presented. In this work, the minimum energy storage operation, is applied to two different magnetic structures. These magnetic structures are called `closed chain' and `pyramidal' the main advantage of the `pyramidal' coupling structure is to improve the size of the converter without increasing the operating frequency. Both magnetic structures are analyzed, compared and experimentally implemented.

Modern transmitters usually have to amplify and transmit signals with simultaneous envelope and phase modulation. Due to this property of the transmitted signal, linear power amplifiers (class A, B, or AB) are usually used as a solution for the power amplifier stage. These amplifiers have high linearity, but suffer from low efficiency when the transmitted signal has high peak-to-average power ratio. The Kahn envelope elimination and restoration technique is used to enhance the efficiency of RF transmitters, by combining highly efficient, nonlinear RF amplifier (class E) with a highly efficient envelope amplifier in order to obtain a linear and highly efficient RF amplifier. This paper presents a solution for the envelope amplifier based on a multilevel converter in series with a linear regulator. The multilevel converter is implemented by employing voltage dividers based on switching capacitors. The implemented envelope amplifier can reproduce any signal with a maximum spectral component of 2 MHz and give instantaneous maximum power of 50 W. The efficiency measurements show that when the signals with low average value are transmitted, the implemented prototypes have up to 20% higher efficiency than linear regulators used as a conventional solution.

A contactless transformer model is proposed in this paper using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This model can be used to simulate Inductive Coupling Power Transfer (ICPT) systems with good accuracy of the transformer and reduce the fabrication time of these systems. The model not only takes into account the geometry of the windings but also the frequency effects in them. As the transformer does not have a magnetic core, it is complicated to model because the flux is expanded in the area around the windings. In order to obtain a very accurate model, it is necessary to use a 2D/3D field solver.

This work is related to the improvement of the output impedance of the Buck converter by means of introducing an additional power path that virtually increases the output capacitance during transients. It is well known that in VRM applications, with wide load steps, voltage overshoots and undershoots may lead to undesired performance of the load. To solve this problem, high-bandwidth high-switching frequency power converters can be applied to reduce the transient time or a big output capacitor can be applied to reduce the output impedance. The first solution can degrade the efficiency by increasing switching losses of the MOSFETS, and the second solution is penalizing the cost and size of the output filter. The Output Impedance Correction Circuit (OICC), as presented here, is used to inject or extract a current n-1 times larger than the output capacitor current, thus virtually increasing n times the value of the output capacitance during the transients. This feature allows the usage of a low frequency Buck converter with smaller capacitor but satisfying the dynamic requirements.

In the last years, RF power amplifiers are taking advantage of the switched dc-dc converters to use them in several architectures that may improve the efficiency of the amplifier, keeping a good linearity. The use of linearization techniques such as Envelope Elimination and Restoration(EER) and Envelope Tracking (ET) requires a very fast dc-dc power converter to provide variable voltage supply to the power amplifier but theoretically the efficiency can be much higher than using the classical amplifiers belonging to classes A, B or AB. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the state of the art of the power converters used as envelope amplifiers in this application. The power topologies will be explored and several important parameters such as efficiency, bandwidth will be discussed.

The paper presents a method to analyze robust stability and transient performance of a distributed power system consisting of commercial converter modules interconnected through a common input filter. The method is based on the use of four transfer functions, which are measurable from the converter input and output terminals. It is shown that these parameters provide important information on the power module sensitivity to the interactions caused by the external impedances. Practical characterization for the described system structure is performed introducing special transfer functions utilized for the interactions assessment. Experimental results are provided to support the presented analysis procedure.

Envelope Tracking (ET) and Envelope Elimination and Restoration (EER) are two techniques that have been used as a solution for highly efficient linear RF Power Amplifiers (PA). In both techniques the most important part is a dc-dc converter called envelope amplifier that has to supply the RF PA with variable voltage. Besides high efficiency, its bandwidth is very important as well. Envelope amplifier based on parallel combination of a switching dc-dc converter and a linear regulator is an architecture that is widely used due to its simplicity. In this paper we discuss about theoretical limitations of this architecture regarding its efficiency and we demonstrate two possible way of its implementation. In order to derive the presented conclusions, a theoretical model of envelope amplifier's efficiency has been presented. Additionally, the benefits of the new emerging GaN technology for this application have been shown as well.

High switching frequencies (several MHz) allow the integration of low power DC/DC converters. Although, in theory, a high switching frequency would make possible to implement a conventional Voltage Mode control (VMC) or Peak Current Mode control (PCMC) with very high bandwidth, in practice, parasitic effects and robustness limits the applicability of these control techniques. This paper compares VMC and CMC techniques with the V2IC control. This control is based on two loops. The fast internal loop has information of the output capacitor current and the error voltage, providing fast dynamic response under load and voltage reference steps, while the slow external voltage loop provides accurate steady state regulation. This paper shows the fast dynamic response of the V2IC control under load and output voltage reference steps and its robustness operating with additional output capacitors added by the customer.

Transformers with parallel windings are commonly used to reduce the losses in the windings. Windings losses depend on the winding positioning and the frequency effects because each winding affects the current sharing of itself and the neighboring windings. In this paper a methodology for determining the connections of the parallel windings that reduces the power losses (and temperature) in the windings of multi-winding transformers is presented. Other applications of the method, such as balanced current sharing and voltage drop reduction are also explored. Different possible input filter configurations for a modular three-phase PWM rectifier system consisting of three interleaved converter cells are studied. The system is designed for an aircraft application where MIL-STD-461E conducted EMI standards have to be met and system weight is a critical design issue. The importance of a LISN model on the simulated noise levels and the effect of interleaving and power unbalance between the different converter modules is discussed. The effect of the number of filter stages and the degree of distribution of the filter stages among the individual converter modules on the weight and losses of the input filter is studied and optimal filter structures are proposed.
