In this chapter we will introduce the reader to the techniques of the Boundary Element Method applied to simple Laplacian problems. Most classical applications refer to electrostatic and magnetic fields, but the Laplacian operator also governs problems such as Saint-Venant torsion, irrotational flow, fluid flow through porous media and the added fluid mass in fluidstructure interaction problems. This short list, to which it would be possible to add many other physical problems governed by the same equation, is an indication of the importance of the numerical treatment of the Laplacian operator. Potential theory has pioneered the use of BEM since the papers of Jaswon and Hess. An interesting introduction to the topic is given by Cruse. In the last five years a renaissance of integral methods has been detected. This can be followed in the books by Jaswon and Symm and by Brebbia or Brebbia and Walker. In this chapter we shall maintain an elementary level and follow a classical scheme in order to make the content accessible to the reader who has just started to study the technique. The whole emphasis has been put on the socalled "direct" method because it is the one which appears to offer more advantages. In this section we recall the classical concepts of potential theory and establish the basic equations of the method. Later on we discuss the discretization philosophy, the implementation of different kinds of elements and the advantages of substructuring which is unavoidable when dealing with heterogeneous materials.

The development of (static and dynamics)programs with constant and linear elements has shown good behaviour. It seems so natural to combine both advantages so that the results will not be affected by local distortions. This paper will be dedicated to presenting the reserch of mixed elements and the way to solve the over-determination that appears in some cases. Although all the study has been done with the potential theory, its application to elastic problems is straightforward.

The singularities which arise when there is a sudden change of boundary conditions are modelled using spectral shape interpolation functions. The procedure can be used for elasticity as well as potential theory and to any degree of accuracy with respect to the smooth part of the curve.

Se presenta también un estudio sobre las zonas singulares a que dan lugar los elementos parabólicos degenerados = This paper presents a B.I.E.M. for potential theory, using in the discretization a completely isoparametric parabolic formulation; that is, the field variable, its first derivative and the boundary domain are interpolated using second orden piecewise polinomic. Several results are presented and comparison is mode with other simpler formulations. Also treated is the posibility of modelling singular behavior by moving the midside mode of selected elements.

ABSTRACT Offshore wind energy is one of the promising resources which can reduce the fossil fuel energy consumption and cover worldwide energy demands. Offshore wind turbine concepts are based on either a fixed structure as a jacket or a floating offshore platform like a semisubmersible, spar or tension leg platform. Floating offshore wind turbines have the potential to be an important part of the energy production profile in the coming years. In order to accomplish this wind integration, these wind turbines need to be made more reliable and cost efficient to be competitive with other sources of energy. Floating offshore artifacts, such oil rings and wind turbines, may experience resonant heave motions in sea states with long peak periods. These heave resonances may increase the system downtime and cause damage on the system components and as well as on risers and mooring systems. The heave resonant response may be reduced by different means: (1) increasing the damping of the system, (2) keeping the natural heave period outside the range of the wave energy, and (3) reducing the heave excitation forces. A typical example to accomplish this reduction are “Heave Plates”. Heave plates are used in the offshore industry due to their hydrodynamic characteristics, i.e., increased added mass and damping. Conventional offshore hydrodynamic analysis considers a structure in waves, and evaluates the linear and nonlinear loads using potential theory. Viscous damping, which is expected to play a crucial role in the resonant response, is an empirical input to the analysis, and is not explicitly calculated. The present research has been mainly focused on the prediction of viscous damping and added mass of floating offshore wind turbine heave plates. In the calculations, the hydrodynamic forces have been measured in order to compute how the hydrodynamic coefficients of added mass1 and damping vary with the KC number, which characterises the amplitude of heave motion relative to the diameter of the disc. In addition, the influence on the hydrodynamic coefficients when the heave plate is oscillating close to the free surface or the seabed has been investigated. In this process, a new model describing the work done by damping in terms of the flow enstrophy, is described herein. This new approach is able to provide a direct correlation between the local vortex shedding processes and the global damping force. The analysis also includes the study of different edges geometry, and examines the sensitivity of the damping and added mass coefficients to the porosity of the plate. A novel porous heave plate based on fractal theory has also been proposed, tested experimentally and compared with experimental data obtained by other authors for plates with similar porosity. A numerical solver of Navier Stokes equations, based on the finite volume technique has been applied. It uses the open-source libraries of OpenFOAM (Open source Field Operation And Manipulation), to solve 2 incompressible, isothermal immiscible fluids using a VOF (volume of fluid) phase-fraction based interface capturing approach, with optional mesh motion and mesh topology changes including adaptive re-meshing. Numerical results have been compared with experiments conducted at Technical University of Madrid (CEHINAV) and CEHIPAR model basins in Madrid and with others performed at School of Mechanical Engineering in The University of Western Australia. A brief summary of main results are presented below: 1. At low KC numbers, a systematic increase in added mass and damping, corresponding to an increase in the seabed proximity, is observed. Specifically, for the cases when the heave plate is oscillating closer to the free surface, the dependence of the hydrodynamic coefficients is strongly influenced by the free surface. 2. As seen in experiments, a critical KC, where the linear trend of the hydrodynamic coefficients with KC is disrupted and that depends on the seabed or free surface distance, has been found. 3. The physical behavior of the flow around the critical KC has been explained through an analysis of the flow vorticity field. 4. The porosity of the heave plates reduces the added mass for the studied porosity at all KC numbers, but the porous heave plates are found to increase the damping coefficient with increasing amplitude of oscillation, achieving a maximum damping coefficient for the heave plate with 10% porosity in the entire KC range. 5. Another concept taken into account in this work has been the heave plates with flaps. Numerical and experimental results show that using discs with flaps will increase added mass when compared to the plain plate but may also significantly reduce damping. 6. A novel heave plate design based on fractal theory has tested experimentally for different submergences and compared with experimental data obtained by other authors for porous plates. Results show an unclear behavior in the coefficients and should be studied further. Future work is necessary in order to address a series of open questions focusing on 3D effects, optimization of the heave plates shapes, etc.

Here, a simple theoretical model of the vehicle induced flow and its effects on traffic sign panels is presented. The model is a continuation of a previous one by Sanz-Andrés and coworkers, now including the flexibility of the panel (and, therefore, the flow effects associated to the motion of the panel). Through the paper an aeroelastic one-degree-of-freedom model is developed and the flow effects are computed from unsteady potential theory. The influence of panel's mechanical properties (mass, damping ratio, and stiffness) in the motion induced forces are numerically analyzed.

A simple analytical model for the train-induced flow and its effects on pedestrians is presented in this paper. The expressions developed for the induced air velocity and pressure on the pedestrian surface, as well as their dependence with time, are obtained from unsteady potential theory. The relevant parameters and their effects are analysed, in particular the sensitivity of the pressure coefficient and its rate of change on the train and pedestrian transverse size, the distance to the tracks and the pressure measurement location on the pedestrian surface. In spite of the extreme simplicity of the model and the expressions obtained, good correlation is observed with previously existing experiments. With this work, an absence of published studies concerning analytical approaches to the problem of vehicle-induced pressure on pedestrians is intended to be covered, allowing for simplified testing procedures.

A general theory that describes the B.I.E. linear approximation in potential and elasticity problems, is developed. A method to tread the Dirichlet condition in sharp vertex is presented. Though the study is developed for linear elements, its extension to higher order interpolation is straightforward. A new direct assembling procedure of the global of equations to be solved, is finally showed.

An asymptotic analysis of the Langmuir-probe problem in a quiescent, fully ionized plasma in a strong magnetic field is performed, for electron cyclotron radius and Debye length much smaller than probe radius, and this not larger than either ion cyclotron radius or mean free path. It is found that the electric potential, which is not confined to a sheath, controls the diffusion far from the probe; inside the magnetic tube bounded by the probe cross section the potential overshoots to a large value before decaying to its value in the body of the plasma. The electron current is independent of the shape of the body along the field and increases with ion temperature; due to the overshoot in the potential, (1) the current at negative voltages does not vary exponentially, (2) its magnitude is strongly reduced by the field, and (3) the usual sharp knee at space potential, disappears. In the regions of the C-V diagram studied the ion current is negligible or unaffected by the field. Some numerical results are presented. The theory, which fails beyond certain positive voltage, fields useful results for weak fields, too.

In this article we present a didactic experience developed by the GIE (Group of Educational Innovation) “Pensamiento Matemático” of the Polytechnics University of Madrid (UPM), in order to bring secondary students and university students closer to Mathematics. It deals with the development of a virtual board game called Mate-trivial. The mechanics of the game is to win points by going around the board which consists of four types of squares identified by colours: “Statistics and Probability”, “Calculus and Analysis”, “Algebra and Geometry” and “Arithmetic and Number Theory ”. When landing on a square, a question of its category is set out: a correct answer wins 200 points, if wrong it loses 100 points, and not answering causes no effect on the points, but all the same, two minutes out of the 20 minutes that each game lasts are lost. For the game to be over it is necessary, before those 20 minutes run out, to reach the central square and succeed in the final task: four chained questions, one of each type, which must be all answered correctly. It is possible to choose between two levels to play: Level 1, for pre-university students and Level 2 for university students. A prototype of the game is available at the website “Aula de Pensamiento Matemático” developed by the GIE: http://innovacioneducativa.upm.es/pensamientomatematico/. This activity lies within a set of didactic actions which the GIE is developing in the framework of the project “Collaborative Strategies between University and Secondary School Education for the teaching and learning of Mathematics: An Application to solve problems while playing”, a transversal project financed by the UPM.

Analytical expressions for current to a cylindrical Langmuir probe at rest in unmagnetized plasma are compared with results from both steady-state Vlasov and particle-in-cell simulations. Probe bias potentials that are much greater than plasma temperature (assumed equal for ions and electrons), as of interest for bare conductive tethers, are considered. At a very high bias, both the electric potential and the attracted-species density exhibit complex radial profiles; in particular, the density exhibits a minimum well within the plasma sheath and a maximum closer to the probe. Excellent agreement is found between analytical and numerical results for values of the probe radiusR close to the maximum radius Rmax for orbital-motion-limited (OML) collection at a particular bias in the following number of profile features: the values and positions of density minimum and maximum, position of sheath boundary, and value of a radius characterizing the no-space-charge behavior of a potential near the high-bias probe. Good agreement between the theory and simulations is also found for parametric laws jointly covering the following three characteristic R ranges: sheath radius versus probe radius and bias for Rmax; density minimum versus probe bias for Rmax; and (weakly bias-dependent) current drop below the OML value versus the probe radius for R > Rmax.

A theory is developed of an electrostatic probe in a fully-ionized plasma in the presence of a strong magnetic field. The ratio of electron Larmor radius to probe transverse dimension is assumed to be small. Poisson's equation, together with kinetic equations for ions and electrons are considered. An asymptotic perturbation method of multiple scales is used by considering the characteristic lengths appearing in the problem. The leading behavior of the solution is found. The results obtained appear to apply to weaker fields also, agreeing with the solutions known in the limit of no magnetic field. The range of potentials for wich results are presented is limited. The basic effects produced by the field are a depletion of the plasma near the probe and a non-monotonic potential surrounding the probe. The ion saturation current is not changed but changes appear in both the floating potential Vf and the slope of the current-voltage diagram at Vf. The transition region extends beyond the space potential Vs,at wich point the current is largely reduced. The diagram does not have an exponential form in this region as commonly assumed. There exists saturation in electron collection. The extent to which the plasma is disturbed is determined. A cylindrical probe has no solution because of a logarithmic singularity at infinity. Extensions of the theory are considered.

A kinetic approach is used to develop a theory of electrostatic probes in a fully ionized plasma in the presence of a magnetic field. A consistent asymptotic expansion is obtained assuming that the electron Larmor radius is small compared to the radius of the probe. The order of magnitude of neglected terms is given. It is found that the electric potential within the tube of force defined by the cross section of the probe decays non-mono tonic ally from the probe; this bump disappears at a certain probe voltage and the theory is valid up to this voltage. The transition region, which extends beyond plasma potential, is not exponential. The possible saturation of the electron current is discussed. Restricted numerical results are given; they seem to be useful for weaker magnetic fields down to the zero-field limit. Extensions of the theory a r e considered.

Use of a spherical grid as electron collector at the anodic end of a tether, as recently proposed, is considered. The standard analysis of space-charge limited current to a solid sphere (with neither magnetic nor plasma-motion effects), which has been shown to best fit TSS1R in-orbit results at very high bias, is used to determine effects from grid transparency on current collected; the analysis is first reformulated in the formalism recently introduced in the two-dimensional analysis of bare-tethers. A discussion of the electric potential created by a spherical grid in vacuum is then carried out; it is shown that each grid-wire collects current well below its maximum OML current, the effective grid transparency being close to its optical value. Formulae for the current to a spherical grid, showing the effects of grid transparency, is determined. A fully consistent analysis of electric potential and electron density, outside and inside the grid, is completed.
