Origin and patterns of distribution of trace elements in street dust. Unleaded petrol and urban lead

The elemental composition, patterns of distribution and possible sources of street dust are not common to all urban environments, but vary according to the peculiarities of each city. The common features and dissimilarities in the origin and nature of street dust were investigated through a series of studies in two widely different cities, Madrid (Spain) and Oslo (Norway), between 1990 and 1994. The most comprehensive sampling campaign was carried out in the Norwegian capital during the summer of 1994. An area of 14 km2, covering most of downtown Oslo and some residential districts to the north of the city, was divided into 1 km2 mapping units, and 16 sampling increments of approximately 150 g were collected from streets and roads in each of them. The fraction below 100 μm was acid-digested and analysed by ICP-MS. Statistical analyses of the results suggest that chemical elements in street dust can be classified into three groups: “urban” elements (Ba, Cd, Co, Cu, Mg, Pb, Sb, Ti, Zn), “natural” elements (Al, Ga, La, Mn, Na, Sr, Th, Y) and elements of a mixed origin or which have undergone geochemical changes from their original sources (Ca, Cs, Fe, Mo, Ni, Rb, Sr, U). Soil resuspension and/or mobilisation appears to be the most important source of “natural” elements, while “urban” elements originate primarily from traffic and from the weathering and corrosion of building materials. The data for Pb seem to prove that the gradual shift from leaded to unleaded petrol as fuel for automobiles has resulted in an almost proportional reduction in the concentration of Pb in dust particles under 100 μm. This fact and the spatial distribution of Pb in the city strongly suggest that lead sources other than traffic (i.e. lead accumulated in urban soil over the years) may contribute as much lead, if not more, to urban street dust.

In order to reduce cost and make up for the rising price of silicon, silicon wafers are sliced thinner and wider,eading to weaker wafers and increased breakage rates during fabrication process. In this work we have analysed different cracks origins and their effect on wafer’s mechanical strength. To enhance wafer’s strength some etching methods have been tested. Also, we have analysed wafers from different points of an entire standard production process. Mechanical strength of the wafers has been obtained via the four line bending test and detection of cracks has been tested with Resonance Ultrasonic Vibration (RUV) system, developed by the University of South Florida.

This paper provides a meta-analysis of long/short distance passenger interconnectivity within the European context. The analysis is based on the results of the European project HERMES of the 7th EU R&D Programme. The study collected stakeholders and travelers’ valuation and preferences in 5 interchanges in 3 EU countries. To that end a common survey was conducted in the following sites: Gothenburg Central Station (Sweden), Avenida de America Interchange in Madrid, Lleida-Zaragoza railway stations (Spain), and the Intermodal Station of Part Dieu in Lyon (France). The first survey addresses the analysis of the different stakeholders’ opinion on the interchange management and characteristics. The second survey gives an insight into the key requirements of long/short distance intermodal passengers in the selected case studies. This included the following aspects: on one hand, trip origin and destination, connecting transport services and modes, trip characteristics, type of ticket, trip motive and socioeconomic characteristics of the traveller. On the other hand, it was structured in such a way to ask passengers to rate importance/satisfaction of a series of common quality and functional aspects like information, accessibility, transfer times, service supply, etc. In conclusion, the paper highlights which elements of the interchange are considered as relevant and how different groups of stakeholders value them, both theoretically and in the selected case studies. They also have identified some key barriers as the lack of internal coordination among operators, managers and decision makers, as well as the the poor signage, particularly among connecting services. Travellers seem to have different priorities depending on their age, purpose of trip and mode chosen. In some cases time appears as the most relevant factor, whilst price is decisive in others.

En algunos países, como por ejemplo España, es común que entre un origen y un destino existan dos carreteras paralelas en las que existen ciertas diferencias. La más importante es que una de las vías es una autopista que ofrece a los usuarios una mayor comodidad y un menor tiempo de viaje a cambio del pago de un peaje, el cual no es necesario abonar en la carretera convencional paralela. Así, el problema de la tarificación vial ha sido estudiado en diversas ocasiones. Existe un amplio consenso en que para lograr el máximo bienestar social, los usuarios deben internalizar las externalidades que producen y no perciben a través de un peaje. Sin embargo, dicho peaje puede perjudicar a los usuarios con bajos ingresos. Dependiendo del objetivo (por ejemplo, maximizar el bienestar, maximizar la equidad social, la amortización de la construcción de la carretera, etc) el peaje óptimo podría variar sustancialmente. La literatura académica acerca de los peajes, la eficiencia y la equidad es vasta y diversa. Sin embargo, hemos encontrado una deficiencia en dicha literatura sobre el peaje óptimo, en corredores donde una carretera y una autopista con diferentes características de calidad compiten para capturar el tráfico. Particularmente no se ha encontrado ninguna investigación acerca del establecimiento del peaje que maximice el bienestar social o la equidad para distintas distribuciones del valor del tiempo de viaje (VTT), caracterizadas por su media y varianza. Por ello, el principal objetivo de la investigación es estimar la influencia que tiene la distribución de la renta de una sociedad sobre el peaje óptimo. La presente tesis doctoral trata de obtener, por medio de una metodología robusta, las diferentes políticas de peajes que los planificadores de transporte deberían llevar a cabo según la riqueza y cohesión social de los potenciales usuarios del corredor, la demanda y el objetivo que se busque con dicha tarificación, esto es, maximizar el bienestar social o la equidad. Adicionalmente también se obtienen los peajes óptimos dependiendo de si el corredor se encuentra totalmente tarificado o únicamente se debe pagar un peaje por circular en la autopista. The users decide if the price of the toll worth to pay for the advantages offered. The problem of road pricing has been largely studied. It is well acknowledged that in order to achieve the maximum social welfare, users must internalize the externalities they produce and do not perceive through a toll. However, that toll can harm users with low income. Depending on the objective (e.g. maximize welfare, maximize social equity, amortize the construction of the road, etc) the optimal toll might vary substantially. The academic literature about pricing, efficiency and equity is vast and diverse. However, as far as we have found, there is a gap in the literature regarding the optimal price where a road and a highway with different quality characteristics compete for capturing the traffic in a corridor. Particularly we did not find any research estimating the optimal welfare price or the optimal equity price for different Value of Travel Time (VTT) distributions characterized by different VTT average and variance. The objective of the research is to fill this gap. In this research a theoretical model in order to obtain the optimal price in a toll highway that competes for capturing the traffic with a conventional road is developed. This model is done from the welfare and equity perspective and for non‐usual users who decide over the expectation of free flow conditions. The model is finally applied to the variables we want to focus on: average value of travel time (VTT) which is strongly related with income, dispersion of this VTT, different kind of distributions of VTT and traffic levels, from free flow to congestion. Furthermore, we also obtain the optimal tolls with the corridor completely charged or with untolled alternative.

The users decide if the price of the toll is worth to pay for the advantages offered. This problem is known as the untolled alternative and it has been largely studied in the academic literature, particularly related to economic efficiency and the optimal welfare toll. However, there is a gap in the literature academic regarding how it affects income distribution to the optimal toll. The main objective of the paper is to fill this gap. In this paper a theoretical model in order to obtain the optimal welfare price in a toll highway that competes for capturing the traffic with a conventional road is developed. This model is done for non-usual users who decide over the expectation of free flow conditions. Desde el siglo VIII hasta prácticamente el siglo XX, los molinos de marea han sido una fuente de desarrollo de las zonas en las que estaban implantados. En toda la costa atlántica de Europa, y posteriormente en América, se desarrollaron estos ingenios conectados por su naturaleza con los puertos. En ellos se procesaban materia prima que tenía su origen o destino en dichos puertos. La aparición de otras fuentes de energía más económicas y eficaces supuso la decadencia paulatina de estos ingenios, hasta la práctica desaparición de un buen número de ellos. En los últimos años, tanto instituciones privadas como públicas, especialmente ayuntamientos han mostrado un interés en conservar estos ingenios ya sea como edificación singular en el que se desarrollen distintos negocios, o como museos o “centros de interpretación” en los que se explica el funcionamiento del molino y su relación con la comarca de influencia. Este nuevo interés por el tema, unido a la necesidad de buscar nuevas fuentes de energías renovables para dar cumplimento a las condiciones del Tratado de Kyoto motivan la necesidad de un estudio de la aplicación de la energía minihidráulica a los antiguos molinos. En el presente documento se ha procedido en primer lugar a describir la historia de los molinos de marea y a continuación a localizarlos en cada provincia para identificar los posibles puntos de producción de energía. Seguidamente se procedió a identificar los diferentes tipos de turbinas aplicables a estos casos, de los que se han elegido dos de ellos, uno de ellos consolidado y el otro en fase experimental, para determinar y analizar la tendencia de determinadas magnitudes financieras en función de la carrera de marea. Las conclusiones resultantes de este análisis han sido que el sistema de funcionamiento mediante el flujo de la marea es menos productivo que mediante reflujo y que la altura de marea en las costas españolas limita considerablemente la rentabilidad de la inversión. Esta circunstancia obliga a hacer un estudio de viabilidad muy detallado de cada uno de los casos. Las investigaciones futuras en este campo se deben encaminar hacia el desarrollo de un nuevo tipo de miniturbina con una mayor regulación para obtener un mayor rendimiento, teniendo en cuenta, además, que el estuario de un molino de marea puede ser además un excelente banco de pruebas. Por otro lado, la posible producción de energía puede ser un elemento a estudiar dentro de un sistema de generación distribuida en el ámbito de una smart-city. From the eighth century until practically the twentieth century, the tide mills have been a source of development of the areas in which they were implanted. Across the Atlantic coast of Europe, and subsequently in America, these devices were developed and connected by its nature with the nearby ports. In these places the raw material, with its origin and destination from these ports, were processed. The emergence of other sources of energy more economic and efficient caused the gradual decline of these devices which led to the disappearance of a large number of them. In recent years, both private and public institutions, especially municipalities, have shown interest in preserving these devices as singular buildings, or as museums or "visitor centers" where the process of milling is explained and also its relationship with the region of influence. This renewed interest in the subject, coupled with the need of finding new sources of renewable energy in order to comply with the conditions of the Kyoto Treaty, has created the need for a study of the possible implementation of small hydro power in the old mills. In the present document, first we have proceeded to describe the history of the tide mills and afterwards we have located them in the Spanish provinces to identify the possible locations of energy generation. In the next step, we proceeded to identify the different types of turbines suitable to these cases, and we have been selected two of them. The first one is consolidated and the second one is in an experimental phase. With these pair of turbines we have determined and analyzed the outcome of certain financial data depending on the tidal range. The conclusions drawn from this analysis are that operating the system by the flow tide is less productive than by ebb tide. The limited height of tide in the Spanish coast considerably limits the return on investment. This outcome forces potential investors to make a very detailed analysis of each case study. Future researches in this field should be guided towards the development of a new type of mini turbine with more regulation for a higher performance, taking into account also that the basin of a tidal mill can also be an excellent test place. Furthermore, the potential energy output can be a factor to consider in a distributed generation system within a smart city.

This study analyses the structure of air traffic and its distribution among the different countries in the European Union, as well as traffic with an origin or destination in non-EU countries. Data sources are Eurostat statistics and actual flight information from EUROCONTROL. Relevant variables such as the number of flights, passengers or cargo tonnes and production indicators (RPKs) are used together with fuel consumption and CO2 emissions data. The segmentation of air traffic in terms of distance permits an assessment of air transport competition with surface transport modes. The results show a clear concentration of traffic in the five larger countries (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and UK), in terms of RPKs. In terms of distance the segment between 500 and 1000 km in the EU, has more flights, passengers, RTKs and CO2 emissions than larger distances. On the environmental side, the distribution of CO2 emissions within the EU Member States is presented, together with fuel efficiency parameters. In general, a direct relationship between RPKs and CO2 emissions is observed for all countries and all distance bands. Consideration is given to the uptake of alternative fuels. Segmenting CO2 emissions per distance band and aircraft type reveals which flights contribute the most the overall EU CO2 emissions. Finally, projections for future CO2 emissions are estimated, according to three different air traffic growth and biofuel introduction scenarios.

Crossed-arch domes are a singular type of ribbed vaults. Their characteristic feature is that the ribs that form the vault are intertwined, forming polygons or stars, leaving an empty space in the centre. The earliest known vaults of this type are found in the Great Mosque of Córdoba, built ca. 960 a.C. The type spread through Spain, and the north of Africa in the 10th to the 16th Centuries, and was used by Guarini and Vittone in the 17th and 18th Centuries in Italy. However, it was used only in a few buildings. Though the literature about the structural behaviour of ribbed Gothic vaults is extensive, so far no structural analysis of crossed arch domes has been made. The purpose of this work is, first to show the way to attack such an analysis within the frame of Modern Limit Analysis of Masonry Structures (Heyman 1995), and then to apply the approach to study the stability of the dome of the Capilla de Villaviciosa. The work may give some clues to art and architectural historians to understand better the origin and development of Islamic dome architecture.

Many diseases have a genetic origin, and a great effort is being made to detect the genes that are responsible for their insurgence. One of the most promising techniques is the analysis of genetic information through the use of complex networks theory. Yet, a practical problem of this approach is its computational cost, which scales as the square of the number of features included in the initial dataset. In this paper, we propose the use of an iterative feature selection strategy to identify reduced subsets of relevant features, and show an application to the analysis of congenital Obstructive Nephropathy. Results demonstrate that, besides achieving a drastic reduction of the computational cost, the topologies of the obtained networks still hold all the relevant information, and are thus able to fully characterize the severity of the disease.

The development of reliable clonal propagation technologies is a requisite for performing Multi-Varietal Forestry (MVF). Somatic embryogenesis is considered the tissue culture based method more suitable for operational breeding of forest trees. Vegetative propagation is very difficult when tissues are taken from mature donors, making clonal propagation of selected trees almost impossible. We have been able to induce somatic embryogenesis in leaves taken from mature oak trees, including cork oak (Quercus suber). This important species of the Mediterranean ecosystem produces cork regularly, conferring to this species a significant economic value. In a previous paper we reported the establishment of a field trial to compare the growth of plants of somatic origin vs zygotic origin, and somatic plants from mature trees vs somatic plants from juvenile seedlings. For that purpose somatic seedlings were regenerated from five selected cork oak trees and from young plants of their half-sib progenies by somatic embryogenesis. They were planted in the field together with acorn-derived plants of the same families. After the first growth period, seedlings of zygotic origin doubled the height of somatic seedlings, showing somatic plants of adult and juvenile origin similar growth. Here we provide data on height and diameter increases after two additional growth periods. In the second one, growth parameters of zygotic seedlings were also significantly higher than those of somatic ones, but there were not significant differences in height increase between seedlings and somatic plants of mature origin. In the third growth period, height and diameter increases of somatic seedlings cloned from the selected trees did not differ from those of zygotic seedlings, which were still higher than data from plants obtained from somatic embryos from the sexual progeny. Therefore, somatic seedlings from mature origin seem not to be influenced by a possible ageing effect, and plants from somatic embryos tend to minimize the initial advantage of plants from acorns

La configuración de un cilindro acoplado a una semi-esfera, conocida como ’hemispherecylinder’, se considera como un modelo simplificado para numerosas aplicaciones industriales tales como fuselaje de aviones o submarinos. Por tanto, el estudio y entendimiento de los fenómenos fluidos que ocurren alrededor de dicha geometría presenta gran interés. En esta tesis se muestra la investigación del origen y evolución de los, ya conocidos, patrones de flujo (burbuja de separación, vórtices ’horn’ y vórtices ’leeward’) que se dan en esta geometría bajo condiciones de flujo separado. Para ello se han llevado a cabo simulaciones numéricas (DNS) y ensayos experimentales usando la técnica de Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), para una variedad de números de Reynolds (Re) y ángulos de ataque (AoA). Se ha aplicado sobre los resultados numéricos la teoría de puntos críticos obteniendo, por primera vez para esta geometría, un diagrama de bifurcaciones que clasifica los diferentes regímenes topológicos en función del número de Reynolds y del ángulo de ataque. Se ha llevado a cabo una caracterización completa sobre el origen y la evolución de los patrones estructurales característicos del cuerpo estudiado. Puntos críticos de superficie y líneas de corriente tridimensionales han ayudado a describir el origen y la evolución de las principales estructuras presentes en el flujo hasta alcanzar un estado de estabilidad desde el punto de vista topológico. Este estado se asocia con el patrón de los vórtices ’horn’, definido por una topología característica que se encuentra en un rango de números de Reynolds muy amplio y en regímenes compresibles e incompresibles. Por otro lado, con el objeto de determinar las estructuras presentes en el flujo y sus frecuencias asociadas, se han usado distintas técnicas de análisis: Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) y análisis de Fourier. Dichas técnicas se han aplicado sobre los datos experimentales y numéricos, demostrándose la buena concordancia entre ambos resultados. Finalmente, se ha encontrado en ambos casos, una frecuencia dominante asociada con una inestabilidad de los vórtices ’leeward’. ABSTRACT The hemisphere-cylinder may be considered as a simplified model for several geometries found in industrial applications such as aircrafts’ fuselages or submarines. Understanding the complex flow phenomena that surrounds this particular geometry is therefore of major industrial interest. This thesis presents an investigation of the origin and evolution of the complex flow pattern; i.e. separation bubbles, horn vortices and leeward vortices, around the hemisphere-cylinder under separated flow conditions. To this aim, threedimensional Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) and experimental tests, using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) techniques, have been performed for a variety of Reynolds numbers (Re) and angles of attack (AoA). Critical point theory has been applied to the numerical simulations to provide, for the first time for this geometry, a bifurcation diagram that classifies the different flow topology regimes as a function of the Reynolds number and the angle of attack. A complete characterization about the origin and evolution of the complex structural patterns of this geometry has been put in evidence. Surface critical points and surface and volume streamlines were able to describe the main flow structures and their strong dependence with the flow conditions up to reach the structurally stable state. This state was associated with the pattern of the horn vortices, found on ranges from low to high Reynolds numbers and from incompressible to compressible regimes. In addition, different structural analysis techniques have been employed: Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD), Dynamic Mode Decomposition (DMD) and Fourier analysis. These techniques have been applied to the experimental and numerical data to extract flow structure information (i.e. modes and frequencies). Experimental and numerical modes are shown to be in good agreement. A dominant frequency associated with an instability of the leeward vortices has been identified in both, experimental and numerical results.

The Caribbean and Central America are among the regions with highest HIV-1B prevalence worldwide. Despite of this high virus burden, little is known about the timing and the migration patterns of HIV-1B in these regions. Migration is one of the major processes shaping the genetic structure of virus populations. Thus, reconstruction of epidemiological network may contribute to understand HIV-1B evolution and reduce virus prevalence. We have investigated the spatio-temporal dynamics of the HIV-1B epidemic in The Caribbean and Central America using 1,610 HIV-1B partial pol sequences from 13 Caribbean and 5 Central American countries. Timing of HIV-1B introduction and virus evolutionary rates, as well as the spatial genetic structure of the HIV-1B populations and the virus migration patterns were inferred. Results revealed that in The Caribbean and Central America most of the HIV-1B variability was generated since the 80 s. At odds with previous data suggesting that Haiti was the origin of the epidemic in The Caribbean, our reconstruction indicated that the virus could have been disseminated from Puerto Rico and Antigua. These two countries connected two distinguishable migration areas corresponding to the (mainly Spanish-colonized) Easter and (mainly British-colonized) Western islands, which indicates that virus migration patterns are determined by geographical barriers and by the movement of human populations among culturally related countries. Similar factors shaped the migration of HIV-1B in Central America. The HIV-1B population was significantly structured according to the country of origin, and the genetic diversity in each country was associated with the virus prevalence in both regions, which suggests that virus populations evolve mainly through genetic drift. Thus, our work contributes to the understanding of HIV-1B evolution and dispersion pattern in the Americas, and its relationship with the geography of the area and the movements of human populations.

The effects of inclusion in the diet of different sources of soya bean meal (SBM) on growth performance, total tract apparent digestibility (TTAD) and apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of major dietary components and mucosal ileum morphology were studied in Iberian pigs weaned at 30 days of age. From 30 to 51 days of age (phase I), there was a control diet based on regular soya bean meal (R-SBM; 44% CP) of Argentina (ARG) origin and five extra diets in which a high-protein soya bean meal (HP-SBM; 49% CP) of the USA or ARG origin, either ground (990 μm) or micronized (60 μm), or a soya protein concentrate (SPC; 65% CP) substituted the R-SBM. From 51 to 61 days of age (phase II), all pigs were fed a common commercial diet in mash form. The following pre-planned orthogonal contrasts were conducted: (1) R-SBM v. all the other diets, (2) SPC v. all the HP-SBM diets, (3) micronized HP-SBM v. ground HP-SBM, (4) HP-SBM of ARG origin v. HP-SBM of US origin and (5) interaction between source and the degree of grinding of the HP-SBM. Dietary treatment did not affect growth performance of the pigs at any age but from 30 to 51 days of age, post weaning diarrhoea (PWD) was higher (P<0.001) and the TTAD and AID of all nutrients were lower for pigs fed the R-SBM diet than for pigs fed the HP-SBM or the SPC diets. However, no differences between the HP-SBM and the SPC containing diets were detected for any trait. The TTAD of organic matter (P=0.07) and gross energy (GE) (P=0.05) tended to be higher for the micronized HP-SBM than for the ground HP-SBM and that of GE was higher (P<0.05) for US meal than for the ARG meal. Pigs fed R-SBM had lower villus height (P<0.01) than pigs fed HP-SBM or SPC but no differences in ileal mucosal morphology were detected between SPC and HP-SBM containing diets. It is concluded that feeding the HP-SBM or SPC-reduced PWD and improved nutrient digestibility and ileal morphology as compared with feeding the R-SBM, but had no effect on pig performance. The inclusion in the diet of added value soya products (micronized SBM or SPC) in substitution of the R-SBM increased the TTAD of all nutrients and reduced PWD but had no advantage in terms of growth performance over the use of ground HP-SBM.
