Objective: To examine the association of breakfast consumption with objectively measured and self-reported physical activity, sedentary time and physical fitness. Design: The HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) Cross-Sectional Study. Breakfast consumption was assessed by two non-consecutive 24 h recalls and by a ‘Food Choices and Preferences’ questionnaire. Physical activity, sedentary time and physical fitness components (cardiorespiratory fitness, muscular fitness and speed/agility) were measured and self-reported. Socio-economic status was assessed by questionnaire. Setting: Ten European cities. Subjects: Adolescents (n 2148; aged 12?5–17?5 years). Results: Breakfast consumption was not associated with measured or self-reported physical activity. However, 24 h recall breakfast consumption was related to measured sedentary time in males and females; although results were not confirmed when using other methods to assess breakfast patterns or sedentary time. Breakfast consumption was not related to muscular fitness and speed/agility in males and females. However, male breakfast consumers had higher cardiorespiratory fitness compared with occasional breakfast consumers and breakfast skippers, while no differences were observed in females. Overall, results were consistent using different methods to assess breakfast consumption or cardiorespiratory fitness (all P#0?005). In addition, both male and female breakfast skippers (assessed by 24 h recall) were less likely to have high measured cardiorespiratory fitness compared with breakfast consumers (OR50?33; 95% CI 0?18, 0?59 and OR50?56; 95 %CI 0?32, 0?98,respectively). Results persisted across methods. Conclusions: Skipping breakfast does not seem to be related to physical activity, sedentary time or muscular fitness and speed/agility as physical fitness components in European adolescents; yet it is associated with both measured and self-reported cardiorespiratory fitness, which extends previous findings.

The present study aimed to investigate the relationships between macronutrient intake and serum lipid profile in adolescents from eight European cities participating in the HELENA (Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence) cross-sectional study (2006–7), and to assess the role of body fat-related variables in these associations. Weight, height, waist circumference, skinfold thicknesses, total choles- terol, HDL-cholesterol (HDL-C), LDL-cholesterol, TAG, apoB and apoA1 were measured in 454 adolescents (44 % boys) aged 12·5–17·5 years. Macronutrient intake (g/4180 kJ per d (1000 kcal per d)) was assessed using two non-consecutive 24 h dietary recalls. Associations were evaluated by multi-level analysis and adjusted for sex, age, maternal education, centre, sum of four skinfolds, moderate-to-vigorous.

Apart from the first year of life, both energy and nutrient requirements are greatest during adolescence and the way to spend this energy by movement is also crucial. Vitamins are specifically involved in multiple cellular and tissue processes, and there is increasing evidence that deficiencies at these early ages could contribute to risk factors of chronic diseases like cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and osteoporosis in adulthood, regardless data are scarce for younger ages. Vitamin concentrations are largely influenced by diet but other individual factors like body composition, physical activity or fitness together with genetics could play also an important role. The current thesis analyzes the liposoluble vitamin status in European adolescents and their relation with several health related factors, like body composción, dietary intake, physical activity and fitness. The work is based on data from the HELENA study ("Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence"), for which a total of 1089 adolescents from ten different cities, in nine European countries were recruited. The main outcomes of this thesis are: a) There is a high liposoluble vitamin deficiency prevalence in European adolescents, specifically for vitamin D, which is presenting almost 80% of the adolescents. b) Season, latitude, BMI, fitness, dietary calcium intake, supplements intake and age are highly related to 25(OH)D concentrations found in European adolescents. c) Cardiorespiratory fitness may predict 25(OH)D concentrations in male adolescents, whereas upper limbs muscular strength and FFM may predict 25(OH)D concentrations in young females. Fat mass and BMI are inversely related to 25(OH)D concentrations, especially in males. d) The effect of 25(OH)D concentrations on bone mineral content in adolescents depends on physical activity levels. e) There is a need to establish a consensus on acceptable ranges and cut-offs of blood concentrations of these vitamins during adolescence, as currently they are extrapolated from adults.

ABSTRACT Teak (Tectona grandis L.f.) has been traditionally considered as a precious wood in SE Asia, where it is indigenous. However, during recent decades the species has reached worldwide relevance in the tropical high quality hardwood sector. Teak has been widely established in Central America, where it has become a key species in the forest sector due to its socioeconomic impact, either because of the big-scale plantations of transnational companies and the abundant small-scale plantations established by many farmers. Despite the relevance of the species, little research has been carried out regarding its soil fertility and nutrition management, a key issue both for sustainability and productivity. The present Thesis performs a literature review to this respect, characterize the soil fertility and the nutrition of teak plantations of Central America and propose several management tools. Soil deficiencies of K and P are usually found in teak plantations in Central America, in addition to occasional acidity problems. These problems are mainly derived of (a) a poor site selection performed during 80s and 90s; and (b) small-scale plantations by farmers in sites which are not adequate for the species. These common soil fertility problems related with P and K soil availability are probably the cause of the relatively low P and K foliar concentration (0,88±0,07% K y 0,16±0,04% P) found in representative teak plantations of the region. Several statistical models are proposed, which allow forest managers to: (a) use them as a reference for foliar analysis interpretation, as they show values considered as representative for teak plantations with an adequate nutritional status in the region; (b) estimate the amount of nutrients accumulated in the aerial biomass of the plantations and, especially, the amount of them which are extracted from the systems as wood is harvested in thinning or final clearcuts. The accumulation of N, P and K result in a key factor for teak management in the region. This turns out to be especially relevant for the P and K because their high output rate by timber extraction and the low soil availability result in an important unbalance which constitutes a risk regarding the sustainability of the system. To this respect, modifying the harvesting time from the usual right now (January-May, business as usual scenario) to September or December (proposed alternatives) can reduce between 24 and 28% the N output associated to timber extraction, 29% the P output and between 14 and 43% the K. Foliar P concentration is a main limiting factor for teak plantations productivity in Central America and a 0.125% critical level is proposed. In addition, the results show a very low tolerance for soil salinity, tendency which was not previously reported. Hence, the probability of teak plantations to have low or very low Site Index is high when Na Saturation is higher than 1.1%. On the other hand, K is confirmed as one of the key nutrients regarding teak nutrition in Central America and a 3.09% provisional critical level is proposed for K Saturation; when values are above this level the probability of having very high Site Index is high. Multivariate statistical analyses have been successfully tested to be used as tools to group forest stands according to their soil fertility similarities. Hence, more efficient fertilization plans can be designed for each group of stands, intensifying and diversifying nutritional management according to soil fertility differences. This methodology, which is considered as a first step towards precision forestry, is regarded as helpful tool to design fertilization plans in big scale plantations. Finally, even though foliar and soil analysis would point out some nutritional deficiencies in a forest stand, the results show how the fertilization is not always going to have a positive effect over forest growth if it is not adequately designed. Some factors have been identified as determinants of tree response to fertilization: density (synergisms between fertilization and thinning scheduling) and the appropriate selection of dosages and product (usually low dosages are applied and N-P-K is preferred instead of applying other nutrients such as Mg, B or Zn or using other alternatives such as mycorrhizas or biofertilizers).

ABSTRACT This study consisted in a long-term nutritional intervention carried out with professional basketball players according to nutritional recommendations, with the following two main objectives: 1) to evaluate the changes produced by the intervention on daily nutritional practices of these athletes and 2) to determine the influence of long term nutritional intake modifications on the rate of perceived exertion per session (Session-RPE) and fatigue, throughout a competitive season for training as well as competition games. These objectives are based on: 1) much scientific evidence that shows an inadequacy of the nutritional habits of basketball players and other athletes regarding nutritional recommendations; 2) the fact widely recognized in the scientific literature that an optimal nutrition allows to achieve the maximum performance of an athlete (both physically and cognitively), promoting fast recovery and decreasing risks of sports injuries and illnesses. However, only few studies carried out a long term nutritional intervention to improve nutritional practices of athletes and it could not be found any research with basketball players; 3) the high correlation between the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and physiological variables related to the performance of physical exercise (e.g.: heart rate, maximum consumption of oxygen or blood lactate) and multiple studies showing the attenuation of RPE during exercise due to the intake of certain nutrients (especially carbohydrates), while none of them was developed in basketball; 4) correlation between nutritional intake and Session-RPE has been recently studied for the first time. Session-RPE method has been validated in basketball players and other team sports as an indicator of internal workload, sports performance and exercise intensity; 5) fatigue is considered one of the main influential factor on RPE and sport performance. It has also been observed that carbohydrates intake may delay or mitigate the onset of fatigue and, thus, decrease the perceived exertion and the internal training load, which could improve sports performance and training-induced adaptations; 6) there are few studies evaluating the influence of nutrient intake on Session-RPE and only one of them has been carried out with basketball players. Moreover, it has not been analyzed the possible effects of the adequacy of players’ nutritional habits through a nutritional intervention on Session-RPE and fatigue, variables that could be decreased for all training session and competition games because of an improvement of daily nutritional intake. Therefore, this work begins with an introduction that provides the conceptual framework of this research focused on the key role of nutrition in sport, as well as on the current nutritional recommendations for athletes and specifically for basketball players. In addition, previous nutritional interventions carried out with other athletes are described, as well as consequential modifications on their food pattern, coinciding with the first objective of the present study. Subsequently, RPE, Session-RPE and fatigue are analyzed, with focus on their correlation with physical workload, training intensity, sports performance and recovery. Finally, all the aforementioned aspects (nutritional intake, RPE and fatigue) were combined in order to know the current status of the relation between each other, this being the base for the second objective of this study. Subsequently, the objectives mentioned above are explained, continuing with the explanation of the methodology used in the study. The methodology consisted of a case-study design, carrying out a long term nutritional intervention with three professional basketball players (each player = one case study; n = 1), in order to adapt their nutritional intake to nutritional recommendations. At the same time, the individual response of each player to the intervention was analyzed for the two main objectives of the study. Each player completed a food diary (7 days; weighing food) in three moments: before, during and at the end of the intervention. In addition, the Session-RPE and fatigue were daily recorded throughout the study for all trainings (training with ball and resistance training) and competition games. At the same time, other potentially influential variables such as mood state and sleeping were daily controlled throughout the study. Data analysis consisted in descriptive statistics calculation for all the variables of the study, the comparison between nutritional intake (evaluated at different times) and nutritional recommendations and a non-parametric mean comparison between pre intervention and during intervention periods was made by Wilcoxon test (repeated measurements) for all variables too. Finally, the changes in nutritional intake, mood state and sleeping were correlated with the perceived exertion and fatigue through correctional study (Tau_b de Kendall). After the methodology, the study results and the associated discussion are presented. The discussion is based on the current scientific evidence that contributes to understand the relation between Session-RPE, fatigue and nutrition throughout the competitive season. The main findings and results analysis can be summarized as follows: 1) the three professional basketball players initially had inadequate nutritional habits and this clearly shows the need of a sports nutritionist in the coaching staff of professional teams; (2) the major deficiencies of the three players’ diet corresponded to a pronounced deficit of energy intake and carbohydrates consumption which were reduced with nutritional intervention; (3) the excessive intake of total fat, saturated fatty acids, ethanol and protein found in some cases were also adapted to the recommendations after the intervention; (4) Session-RPE mean and fatigue of a certain period of the competition season, could be decreased in an individual player by increasing his carbohydrates intake in the long term, if there are no relevant psycho-emotional disorders; (5) the behavior of the Session-RPE in competition games does not seem to be influenced by the nutritional factors modified in this study. They seem to depend much more on the variation of external non-controllable factors associated with the professional basketball games. Given these results, the different characteristics of each player and the diverse responses observed after the intervention in each individual for all the variables, reinforced the importance of the use of a case study design for research with elite athletes as well as personalized nutritional counselling. In the same way, the different responses obtained for RPE and fatigue in the long term for each player due to modification of nutritional habits, show that there is a dependence of such variables on the physical, psychosocial, emotional and contextual characteristics of each player. Therefore it is proposed that the rigorous control of the qualitative variables that seem to influence the RPE and fatigue in the long term, may facilitate the understanding of data and the determination of unknown factors that could influence these variables. Finally, because Session-RPE is a direct indicator of the internal load of training (psycho-physiological stress experienced by the athlete), the possible attenuation of Session-RPE through the improvement in nutritional habits, would allow to apply the planned external loads of training with less internal stress and better recovery between sessions, with a decrease in fatigue, despite of the advance of the season.

Spain produces approximately 600 M broiler chickens per year and has a current laying hen census of 35 M birds. Production of other poultry species, such as turkeys and ducks, is quite limited. The number of birds slaughtered has remained quite flat for the last 10 years although final body weight (BW) has increased in this period by almost 200g per bird. The number of laying hens has decreased markedly (e.g. circa 50 M in 2010) and the proportion of brown -egg layers has increased from less than 10% in 1990 to more than 90% in 2013. In addition to egg color, brown eggs are preferred by the consumers because of bigger size and better shell quality.

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of increasing the level of two sources of fibrous by-products, orange pulp (OP) and carob meal (CM), in iso-NDF growing-finishing pig diets on nutrient balance, slurry composition and potential ammonia (NH3) and methane (CH4) emissions. Thirty pigs (85.4 ± 12.3 kg) were fed five iso-nutritive diets: a commercial control wheat/barley (C) and four experimental diets including two sources of fibrous by-products (OP and CM) and two dietary levels (75 and 150 g/kg) in a 2 × 2 factorial arrangement. After a 14-day adaptation period, faeces and urine were collected separately for 7 days to measure nutrient digestibility and the excretory patterns of N from pigs (6 replicates per diet) housed individually in metabolic pens. For each animal, the derived NH3 and CH4 emissions were measured in samples of slurry over an 11- and 100-day storage periods, respectively. Source and level of the fibrous by-products affected digestion efficiency in a different way as the coefficients of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) for dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), fibre fractions and gross energy increased with OP but decreased with CM (P < 0.05). Crude protein CTTAD decreased with the inclusion of both sources of fibre, being lower at the highest dietary level. Faecal concentration of fibre fractions increased (P < 0.05) with the level of inclusion of CM but decreased with that of OP (P < 0.01). High dietary level for both sources of fibre increased (P < 0.02) CP faecal content but urine N content decreased (from 205 to 168 g/kg DM, P < 0.05) in all the fibre-supplemented compared to C diet. Additionally, the proportions of undigested dietary, water soluble, and bacterial and endogenous debris of faecal N excretion were not affected by treatments. The initial slurry characteristics did not differ among different fibre sources and dietary levels, except pH, which decreased at the highest by-product inclusion levels. Ammonia emission per kg of slurry was lower in all the fibre-supplemented diets than in C diet (from 2.44 to 1.81 g, P < 0.05). Additionally, slurries from the highest dietary level of by-products tended (P < 0.06) to emit less NH3 per kg of initial total Kjeldahl N and showed a lower B0, independently of the fibre source. Thus, the fibre sources and their dietary levels affected pig nutrient digestion and composition of urine and faeces, showing potential to decrease NH3 and CH4 emissions at high levels of inclusion, independently of type of fibre.

The aim of this study was to establish the relationships between faecal fat concentration and gaseous emissions from pig slurry. Five diets were designed to meet essential nutrient requirements: a control and four experimental feeds including two levels (35 or 70 g/kg) of calcium soap fatty acids distillate (CSP) and 0 or 200 g/kg of orange pulp (OP) combined in a 2 × 2 factorial structure. Thirty growing pigs (six per treatment) were used to measure dry matter (DM) and N balance, coefficients of total tract apparent digestibility (CTTAD) of nutrients, faecal and urine composition and potential emissions of ammonia (NH3) and methane (CH4). Increasing dietary CSP level decreased DM, ether extract (EE) and crude protein (CP) CTTAD (by 4.0, 11.1 and 3.5%, respectively, P < 0.05), but did not influence those of fibrous constituents. It also led to a decrease (from 475 to 412 g/kg DM, P < 0.001) of faecal concentration of neutral detergent fibre (aNDFom) and to an increment (from 138 to 204 g/kg, P < 0.001) of EE in faecal DM that was related to greater CH4 emissions, both per gram of organic matter (P = 0.021) or on a daily basis (P < 0.001). Level of CSP did not affect N content in faeces or urine, but increased daily DM (P < 0.001), and N (P = 0.031) faecal excretion with no effect on urine N excretion. This resulted in lesser (P = 0.036) NH3 potential emission per kg of slurry. Addition of OP decreased CTTAD of EE (by 7.9%, P = 0.044), but increased (P < 0.05) that of all the fibrous fractions. As a consequence, faecal EE content increased (from 165 to 177 g/kg DM; P = 0.012), and aNDFom decreased greatly (from 483 to 404 g/kg DM, P < 0.001), which in all resulted in a lack of effect of OP on CH4 potential emission. Inclusion of OP in the diet also led to a significant decrease of CP CTTAD (by 6.85%, P < 0.001), and to an increase of faecal CP concentration (from 174 to 226 g/kg DM, P < 0.001), with no significant influence on urine N content. These effects resulted in higher N faecal losses, especially those of the undigested dietary origin, without significant effects on potential NH3 emission. No significant interactions between CSP and OP supplementation were observed for the gaseous emissions measured.
