The traditional architecture of the centre of the city of Arequipa has been analyzed by comparing floor-plans of houses from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in order to explain the reasons behind the arrangement of their constructional elements and the evolution of said elements and floor-plans. The historic centre of Arequipa, a city located in the South of Perú, South America (Latitude 16°23' South, Longitude 71 °31' West), is based on a ground plan from 1540 that was set during the city's Spanish foundation. It was declared Patrimony of the Humanity by UNESCO. The manorial architecture is widely known for its decorated fronts and one-of-a-kind designs, but its differences with respect to the popular architecture are not based exclusively on decorative aspects. Peru's colonial period finished around 1825, but the barrel-vault, construction style continued in Arequipa through 1868, when an earthquake destroyed the city. Thereafter, the vaults were replaced by roofs made of rails, with cinders made out of the lava stone. The stately houses belonged to the founding families who settled around the main square on forty nine blocks that formed a square-grid, street layout. Also belonging to this category are the houses of landlords and traders from post-colonial times.

(This is an excerpt from the content) On May 11 2011 at 1705 hours, a small 4.5 Mw. magnitude earthquake struck the town of Lorca in south-eastern Spain. Other than alarmed citizens, only minor damage to buildings occurred due to this quake. Unfortunately at 1847 hours, a second shock registering a magnitude of 5.1 Mw. and very shallow (just around 2 km under the city) produced the largest seismic catastrophe registered in Spain in the last 120 years. This second shock is commonly referred to as “Lorca’s earthquake” and the following papers describe the context, circumstances and consequences of the event. Spain is a country of moderate seismic hazard in a global context. Before the Lorca earthquake, the most destructive earthquake in modern times was the so-called “Andalusian earthquake” (25th December 1884) that resulted in 750 fatalities and more than 1,500 injuries, reaching X in Mercalli’s intensity scale. We present and analyze a subgrid viscosity Lagrange-Galerk in method that combines the subgrid eddy viscosity method proposed in W. Layton, A connection between subgrid scale eddy viscosity and mixed methods. Appl. Math. Comp., 133: 14 7-157, 2002, and a conventional Lagrange-Galerkin method in the framework of P1⊕ cubic bubble finite elements. This results in an efficient and easy to implement stabilized method for convection dominated convection diffusion reaction problems. Numerical experiments support the numerical analysis results and show that the new method is more accurate than the conventional Lagrange-Galerkin one.
