In this paper, a system that allows applying precision agriculture techniques is described. The application is based on the deployment of a team of unmanned aerial vehicles that are able to take georeferenced pictures in order to create a full map by applying mosaicking procedures for postprocessing. The main contribution of this work is practical experimentation with an integrated tool. Contributions in different fields are also reported. Among them is a new one-phase automatic task partitioning manager, which is based on negotiation among the aerial vehicles, considering their state and capabilities. Once the individual tasks are assigned, an optimal path planning algorithm is in charge of determining the best path for each vehicle to follow. Also, a robust flight control based on the use of a control law that improves the maneuverability of the quadrotors has been designed. A set of field tests was performed in order to analyze all the capabilities of the system, from task negotiations to final performance. These experiments also allowed testing control robustness under different weather conditions.

In the last decade we have seen how small and light weight aerial platforms - aka, Mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (MUAV) - shipped with heterogeneous sensors have become a 'most wanted' Remote Sensing (RS) tool. Most of the off-the-shelf aerial systems found in the market provide way-point navigation. However, they do not rely on a tool that compute the aerial trajectories considering all the aspects that allow optimizing the aerial missions. One of the most demanded RS applications of MUAV is image surveying. The images acquired are typically used to build a high-resolution image, i.e., a mosaic of the workspace surface. Although, it may be applied to any other application where a sensor-based map must be computed. This thesis provides a study of this application and a set of solutions and methods to address this kind of aerial mission by using a fleet of MUAVs. In particular, a set of algorithms are proposed for map-based sampling, and aerial coverage path planning (ACPP). Regarding to map-based sampling, the approaches proposed consider workspaces with different shapes and surface characteristics. The workspace is sampled considering the sensor characteristics and a set of mission requirements. The algorithm applies different computational geometry approaches, providing a unique way to deal with workspaces with different shape and surface characteristics in order to be surveyed by one or more MUAVs. This feature introduces a previous optimization step before path planning. After that, the ACPP problem is theorized and a set of ACPP algorithms to compute the MUAVs trajectories are proposed. The problem addressed herein is the problem to coverage a wide area by using MUAVs with limited autonomy. Therefore, the mission must be accomplished in the shortest amount of time. The aerial survey is usually subject to a set of workspace restrictions, such as the take-off and landing positions as well as a safety distance between elements of the fleet. Moreover, it has to avoid forbidden zones to y. Three different algorithms have been studied to address this problem. The approaches studied are based on graph searching, heuristic and meta-heuristic approaches, e.g., mimic, evolutionary. Finally, an extended survey of field experiments applying the previous methods, as well as the materials and methods adopted in outdoor missions is presented. The reported outcomes demonstrate that the findings attained from this thesis improve ACPP mission for mapping purpose in an efficient and safe manner.

Due to the sensitive international situation caused by still-recent terrorist attacks, there is a common need to protect the safety of large spaces such as government buildings, airports and power stations. To address this problem, developments in several research fields, such as video and cognitive audio, decision support systems, human interface, computer architecture, communications networks and communications security, should be integrated with the goal of achieving advanced security systems capable of checking all of the specified requirements and spanning the gap that presently exists in the current market. This paper describes the implementation of a decision system for crisis management in infrastructural building security. Specifically, it describes the implementation of a decision system in the management of building intrusions. The positions of the unidentified persons are reported with the help of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN). The goal is to achieve an intelligent system capable of making the best decision in real time in order to quickly neutralise one or more intruders who threaten strategic installations. It is assumed that the intruders’ behaviour is inferred through sequences of sensors’ activations and their fusion. This article presents a general approach to selecting the optimum operation from the available neutralisation strategies based on a Minimax algorithm. The distances among different scenario elements will be used to measure the risk of the scene, so a path planning technique will be integrated in order to attain a good performance. Different actions to be executed over the elements of the scene such as moving a guard, blocking a door or turning on an alarm will be used to neutralise the crisis. This set of actions executed to stop the crisis is known as the neutralisation strategy. Finally, the system has been tested in simulations of real situations, and the results have been evaluated according to the final state of the intruders. In 86.5% of the cases, the system achieved the capture of the intruders, and in 59.25% of the cases, they were intercepted before they reached their objective.

Mosaicing is a technique that allows obtaining a large high resolution image by stitching several images together. These base images are usually acquired from an elevated point of view. Until recently, low-altitude image acquisition has been performed typically by using using airplanes, as well as other manned platforms. However, mini unmanned aerial vehicles (MUAV) endowed with a camera have lately made this task more available for small for cicil applications, for example for small farmers in order to obtain accurate agronomic information about their crop fields. The stitching orientation, or the image acquisition orientation usually coincides with the aircraft heading assuming a downwards orientation of the camera. In this paper, the efect of the image orientation in the eficiency of the aerial coverage path planning is studied. Moreover, an algorithm to compute an optimal stitching orientation angle is proposed and results are numerically compared with classical approaches.

INTRODUCTION: Motion metrics have become an important source of information when addressing the assessment of surgical expertise. However, their direct relationship with the different surgical skills has not been fully explored. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relevance of motion-related metrics in the evaluation processes of basic psychomotor laparoscopic skills, as well as their correlation with the different abilities sought to measure. METHODS: A framework for task definition and metric analysis is proposed. An explorative survey was first conducted with a board of experts to identify metrics to assess basic psychomotor skills. Based on the output of that survey, three novel tasks for surgical assessment were designed. Face and construct validation study was performed, with focus on motion-related metrics. Tasks were performed by 42 participants (16 novices, 22 residents and 4 experts). Movements of the laparoscopic instruments were registered with the TrEndo tracking system and analyzed. RESULTS: Time, path length and depth showed construct validity for all three tasks. Motion smoothness and idle time also showed validity for tasks involving bi-manual coordination and tasks requiring a more tactical approach respectively. Additionally, motion smoothness and average speed showed a high internal consistency, proving them to be the most task-independent of all the metrics analyzed. CONCLUSION: Motion metrics are complementary and valid for assessing basic psychomotor skills, and their relevance depends on the skill being evaluated. A larger clinical implementation, combined with quality performance information, will give more insight on the relevance of the results shown in this study.

The 12 January 2010, an earthquake hit the city of Port-au-Prince, capital of Haiti. The earthquake reached a magnitude Mw 7.0 and the epicenter was located near the town of Léogâne, approximately 25 km west of the capital. The earthquake occurred in the boundary region separating the Caribbean plate and the North American plate. This plate boundary is dominated by left-lateral strike slip motion and compression, and accommodates about 20 mm/y slip, with the Caribbean plate moving eastward with respect to the North American plate (DeMets et al., 2000). Initially the location and focal mechanism of the earthquake seemed to involve straightforward accommodation of oblique relative motion between the Caribbean and North American plates along the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault system (EPGFZ), however Hayes et al., (2010) combined seismological observations, geologic field data and space geodetic measurements to show that, instead, the rupture process involved slip on multiple faults. Besides, the authors showed that remaining shallow shear strain will be released in future surface-rupturing earthquakes on the EPGFZ. In December 2010, a Spanish cooperation project financed by the Politechnical University of Madrid started with a clear objective: Evaluation of seismic hazard and risk in Haiti and its application to the seismic design, urban planning, emergency and resource management. One of the tasks of the project was devoted to vulnerability assessment of the current building stock and the estimation of seismic risk scenarios. The study was carried out by following the capacity spectrum method as implemented in the software SELENA (Molina et al., 2010). The method requires a detailed classification of the building stock in predominant building typologies (according to the materials in the structure and walls, number of stories and age of construction) and the use of the building (residential, commercial, etc.). Later, the knowledge of the soil characteristics of the city and the simulation of a scenario earthquake will provide the seismic risk scenarios (damaged buildings). The initial results of the study show that one of the highest sources of uncertainties comes from the difficulty of achieving a precise building typologies classification due to the craft construction without any regulations. Also it is observed that although the occurrence of big earthquakes usually helps to decrease the vulnerability of the cities due to the collapse of low quality buildings and the reconstruction of seismically designed buildings, in the case of Port-au-Prince the seismic risk in most of the districts remains high, showing very vulnerable areas. Therefore the local authorities have to drive their efforts towards the quality control of the new buildings, the reinforcement of the existing building stock, the establishment of seismic normatives and the development of emergency planning also through the education of the population.

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have shown their potentials in various applications, which bring a lot of benefits to users from both research and industrial areas. For many setups, it is envisioned thatWSNs will consist of tens to hundreds of nodes that operate on small batteries. However due to the diversity of the deployed environments and resource constraints on radio communication, sensing ability and energy supply, it is a very challenging issue to plan optimized WSN topology and predict its performance before real deployment. During the network planning phase, the connectivity, coverage, cost, network longevity and service quality should all be considered. Therefore it requires designers coping with comprehensive and interdisciplinary knowledge, including networking, radio engineering, embedded system and so on, in order to efficiently construct a reliable WSN for any specific types of environment. Nowadays there is still a lack of the analysis and experiences to guide WSN designers to efficiently construct WSN topology successfully without many trials. Therefore, simulation is a feasible approach to the quantitative analysis of the performance of wireless sensor networks. However the existing planning algorithms and tools, to some extent, have serious limitations to practically design reliable WSN topology: Only a few of them tackle the 3D deployment issue, and an overwhelming number of works are proposed to place devices in 2D scheme. Without considering the full dimension, the impacts of environment to the performance of WSN are not completely studied, thus the values of evaluated metrics such as connectivity and sensing coverage are not sufficiently accurate to make proper decision. Even fewer planning methods model the sensing coverage and radio propagation by considering the realistic scenario where obstacles exist. Radio signals propagate with multi-path phenomenon in the real world, in which direct paths, reflected paths and diffracted paths contribute to the received signal strength. Besides, obstacles between the path of sensor and objects might block the sensing signals, thus create coverage hole in the application. None of the existing planning algorithms model the network longevity and packet delivery capability properly and practically. They often employ unilateral and unrealistic formulations. The optimization targets are often one-sided in the current works. Without comprehensive evaluation on the important metrics, the performance of planned WSNs can not be reliable and entirely optimized. Modeling of environment is usually time consuming and the cost is very high, while none of the current works figure out any method to model the 3D deployment environment efficiently and accurately. Therefore many researchers are trapped by this issue, and their algorithms can only be evaluated in the same scenario, without the possibility to test the robustness and feasibility for implementations in different environments. In this thesis, we propose a novel planning methodology and an intelligent WSN planning tool to assist WSN designers efficiently planning reliable WSNs. First of all, a new method is proposed to efficiently and automatically model the 3D indoor and outdoor environments. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the advantages of image understanding algorithm are applied to automatically reconstruct 3D outdoor and indoor scenarios for signal propagation and network planning purpose. The experimental results indicate that the proposed methodology is able to accurately recognize different objects from the satellite images of the outdoor target regions and from the scanned floor plan of indoor area. Its mechanism offers users a flexibility to reconstruct different types of environment without any human interaction. Thereby it significantly reduces human efforts, cost and time spent on reconstructing a 3D geographic database and allows WSN designers concentrating on the planning issues. Secondly, an efficient ray-tracing engine is developed to accurately and practically model the radio propagation and sensing signal on the constructed 3D map. The engine contributes on efficiency and accuracy to the estimated results. By using image processing concepts, including the kd-tree space division algorithm and modified polar sweep algorithm, the rays are traced efficiently without detecting all the primitives in the scene. The radio propagation model iv is proposed, which emphasizes not only the materials of obstacles but also their locations along the signal path. The sensing signal of sensor nodes, which is sensitive to the obstacles, is benefit from the ray-tracing algorithm via obstacle detection. The performance of this modelling method is robust and accurate compared with conventional methods, and experimental results imply that this methodology is suitable for both outdoor urban scenes and indoor environments. Moreover, it can be applied to either GSM communication or ZigBee protocol by varying frequency parameter of the radio propagation model. Thirdly, WSN planning method is proposed to tackle the above mentioned challenges and efficiently deploy reliable WSNs. More metrics (connectivity, coverage, cost, lifetime, packet latency and packet drop rate) are modeled more practically compared with other works. Especially 3D ray tracing method is used to model the radio link and sensing signal which are sensitive to the obstruction of obstacles; network routing is constructed by using AODV protocol; the network longevity, packet delay and packet drop rate are obtained via simulating practical events in WSNet simulator, which to the best of our knowledge, is the first time that network simulator is involved in a planning algorithm. Moreover, a multi-objective optimization algorithm is developed to cater for the characteristics of WSNs. The capability of providing multiple optimized solutions simultaneously allows users making their own decisions accordingly, and the results are more comprehensively optimized compared with other state-of-the-art algorithms. iMOST is developed by integrating the introduced algorithms, to assist WSN designers efficiently planning reliable WSNs for different configurations. The abbreviated name iMOST stands for an Intelligent Multi-objective Optimization Sensor network planning Tool. iMOST contributes on: (1) Convenient operation with a user-friendly vision system; (2) Efficient and automatic 3D database reconstruction and fast 3D objects design for both indoor and outdoor environments; (3) It provides multiple multi-objective optimized 3D deployment solutions and allows users to configure the network properties, hence it can adapt to various WSN applications; (4) Deployment solutions in the 3D space and the corresponding evaluated performance are visually presented to users; and (5) The Node Placement Module of iMOST is available online as well as the source code of the other two rebuilt heuristics. Therefore WSN designers will be benefit from v this tool on efficiently constructing environment database, practically and efficiently planning reliable WSNs for both outdoor and indoor applications. With the open source codes, they are also able to compare their developed algorithms with ours to contribute to this academic field. Finally, solid real results are obtained for both indoor and outdoor WSN planning. Deployments have been realized for both indoor and outdoor environments based on the provided planning solutions. The measured results coincide well with the estimated results. The proposed planning algorithm is adaptable according to the WSN designer’s desirability and configuration, and it offers flexibility to plan small and large scale, indoor and outdoor 3D deployments. The thesis is organized in 7 chapters. In Chapter 1, WSN applications and motivations of this work are introduced, the state-of-the-art planning algorithms and tools are reviewed, challenges are stated out and the proposed methodology is briefly introduced. In Chapter 2, the proposed 3D environment reconstruction methodology is introduced and its performance is evaluated for both outdoor and indoor environment. The developed ray-tracing engine and proposed radio propagation modelling method are described in details in Chapter 3, their performances are evaluated in terms of computation efficiency and accuracy. Chapter 4 presents the modelling of important metrics of WSNs and the proposed multi-objective optimization planning algorithm, the performance is compared with the other state-of-the-art planning algorithms. The intelligent WSN planning tool iMOST is described in Chapter 5. RealWSN deployments are prosecuted based on the planned solutions for both indoor and outdoor scenarios, important data are measured and results are analysed in Chapter 6.

Technological progress in the area of informatics and human interface platforms create a window of opportunities for the neurorehablitation of patients with motor impairments. The CogWatch project (www.cogwatch.eu) aims to create an intelligent assistance system to improve motor planning and execution in patients with apraxia during their daily activities. Due to the brain damage caused by cardiovascular incident these patients suffer from impairments in the ability to use tools, and to sequence actions during daily tasks (such as making breakfast). Based on the common coding theory (Hommel et al., 2001) and mirror neuron primate research (Rizzolatti et al., 2001) we aim to explore use of cues, which incorporate aspects of biological motion from healthy adults performing everyday tasks requiring tool use and ecological sounds linked to the action goal. We hypothesize that patients with apraxia will benefit from supplementary sensory information relevant to the task, which will reinforce the selection of the appropriate motor plan. Findings from this study determine the type of sensory guidance in the CogWatch interface. Rationale for the experimental design is presented and the relevant literature is discussed.

ABSTRACT Future air traffic management (ATM) will require a paradigm shift from today’s mainly tactical ATM to trajectory-based operations (TBOs). An increase in the level of automation will also relieve humans —air traffic control officers (ATCOs), flight crew, etc.— from many of the tasks they perform today. Humans will still be central in this future ATM, as decision-makers and managers. These two improvements (TBOs and increased automation) are expected to provide the increase in ATM performance that will allow coping with the expected increase in air transport demand. Under TBOs, trajectories are negotiated between the airspace user (an airline, pilot, or operator) and the air navigation service provider (ANSP) using a collaborative decision making (CDM) process. A suitable method for sharing aircraft trajectories is necessary for this negotiation. Sharing a whole trajectory would require a high amount of bandwidth, and the shared trajectory might become invalid if the weather forecast changed. Instead, a description of the trajectory, decoupled from the weather conditions, could be shared, so that the actual trajectory could be computed from this trajectory description. This trajectory description should be easy to process using a computing program —as some of the CDM processes will be automated— but also easy to understand for a human operator —who will be supervising the process and making decisions. This thesis presents a series of formal languages that can be used for this purpose. These languages provide the means to describe aircraft trajectories during all phases of flight, from push back to arrival at the gate. They can also describe trajectories of both manned and unmanned aircraft, including fixedwing and some rotary-wing aircraft (quadrotors). Some of these languages are tightly interrelated and organized in a language hierarchy. One of the key languages in this hierarchy, the aircraft intent description language (AIDL), had already been developed prior to this thesis. This language was derived from the equations of motion of fixed-wing aircraft, and can provide an unambiguous description of fixed-wing aircraft trajectories. A variant of this language, the quadrotor AIDL (QR-AIDL), is developed in this thesis to allow describing a quadrotor aircraft trajectory with the same level of detail. Then, the intent composite description language (ICDL) is built on top of these two languages, providing more flexibility to describe some parts of the trajectory while leaving others unspecified. The ICDL is used to provide generic descriptions of common aircraft manoeuvres, which can be particularized and combined to form complex descriptions of flight. Another language is built on top of the ICDL, the flight intent description language (FIDL). The FIDL specifies high-level requirements on trajectories —including constraints and objectives—, but can use features of the ICDL to provide arbitrary levels of detail in different parts of the flight. The ICDL and FIDL have been developed in collaboration with Boeing Research & Technology Europe (BR&TE). Also, the mission intent description language (MIDL) has been developed to allow describing missions involving multiple aircraft. This language is based on the FIDL and keeps all its expressive power, while it also provides new semantics for describing mission tasks, mission objectives, and constraints involving several aircraft. In ATM, the movement of aircraft while on the airport surface also has to be monitored and managed. Another formal language has been designed for this purpose, denoted surface movement description language (SMDL). This language does not belong to the language hierarchy described above, and it is based on the clearances used in airport surface operations. Means to express uncertainty and mutability of different parts of the trajectory are also provided. Finally, the applications of these languages to trajectory prediction and mission planning are explored in this thesis. The concept of trajectory language processing engine (TLPE) is used in these two applications. A TLPE is an ATM function whose main input and output are expressed in any of the languages in the hierarchy described in this thesis. A modular trajectory predictor is defined as a combination of multiple TLPEs, each of them performing a small subtask. Special attention is given to the TLPE that builds the horizontal, vertical, and configuration profiles of the trajectory. In particular, a novel method for the generation of the vertical profile is presented. The process of planning a mission can also be seen as a TLPE, where the main input is expressed in the MIDL and the output consists of a number of trajectory descriptions —one for each aircraft available in the mission— expressed in the FIDL. A mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation for the problem of assigning mission tasks to the available aircraft is provided. In addition, since finding optimal paths between locations is a key problem to mission planning, a novel path finding algorithm is presented. This algorithm can compute near-shortest paths avoiding all obstacles in an urban environment in very short times. The several formal languages described in this thesis can serve as a standard specification to share trajectory information among different actors in ATM. In combination, these languages can describe trajectories with the necessary level of detail for any application, and can be used to increase automation by exploiting this information using decision support tools (DSTs). Their applications to some basic functions of DSTs, such as trajectory prediction, have been analized.

Abstract Addressing the running challenges of several greater cities, the institutional mark and regional planning are dimensions for improving metropolitan governance. Regarding the southwest European capital regions, what can be the innovations and differences in their currently processes and models? This paper proposes an applied framework to present the metropolitan governance analysis. Through a comparative case study methodology, various elements and interviews are qualitatively measured in the regions of Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and Lisbon. The conclusions find a tendency to balance between the efforts on those two regional metropolitan governance dimensions, which does not prevent to register their different paths: for example Ile-de-France has developed good initiatives in terms of planning, which then require some adjustments in the political mark, while Madrid had in recent years “less activity”, in result of his institutional stability. The Lisbon region maybe stays in an “intermediate position” with a dynamic evolution that is difficult to predict. But according to that argument, it’s possible to admit that his processes can gradually lead to small improvements in his governance system, with his own path, implementing actions that must respect, in particularly, the geography of the territory.
