Flat or worn wheels rolling on rough or corrugated tracks can provoke airborne noise and ground-borne vibration, which can be a serious concern for nearby neighbours of urban rail transit lines. Among the various treatments used to reduce vibration and noise, resilient wheels play an important role. In conventional resilient wheels, a slightly prestressed Vshaped rubber ring is mounted between the steel wheel centre and tyre. The elastic layer enhances rolling noise and vibration suppression, as well as impact reduction on the track. In this paper the effectiveness of resilient wheels in underground lines, in comparison to monobloc ones, is assessed. The analysed resilient wheel is able to carry greater loads than standard resilient wheels used for light vehicles. It also presents a greater radial resiliency and a higher axial stiffness than conventional Vwheels. The finite element method was used in this study. A quarter car model was defined, in which the wheelset was modelled as an elastic body. Several simulations were performed in order to assess the vibrational behaviour of elastic wheels, including modal, harmonic and random vibration analysis, the latter allowing the introduction of realistic vertical track irregularities, as well as the influence of the running speed. Due to numerical problems some simplifications were needed. Parametric variations were also performed, in which the sensitivity of the whole system to variations of rubber prestress and Poisson’s ratio of the elastic material was assessed. Results are presented in the frequency domain, showing a better performance of the resilient wheels for frequencies over 200 Hz. This result reveals the ability of the analyzed design to mitigate rolling noise, but not structural vibrations, which are primarily found in the lower frequency range.

Diffusion controls the gaseous transport process in soils when advective transport is almost null. Knowledge of the soil structure and pore connectivity are critical issues to understand and modelling soil aeration, sequestration or emission of greenhouse gasses, volatilization of volatile organic chemicals among other phenomena. In the last decades these issues increased our attention as scientist have realize that soil is one of the most complex materials on the earth, within which many biological, physical and chemical processes that support life and affect climate change take place. A quantitative and explicit characterization of soil structure is difficult because of the complexity of the pore space. This is the main reason why most theoretical approaches to soil porosity are idealizations to simplify this system. In this work, we proposed a more realistic attempt to capture the complexity of the system developing a model that considers the size and location of pores in order to relate them into a network. In the model we interpret porous soils as heterogeneous networks where pores are represented by nodes, characterized by their size and spatial location, and the links representing flows between them. In this work we perform an analysis of the community structure of porous media of soils represented as networks. For different real soils samples, modelled as heterogeneous complex networks, spatial communities of pores have been detected depending on the values of the parameters of the porous soil model used. These types of models are named as Heterogeneous Preferential Attachment (HPA). Developing an exhaustive analysis of the model, analytical solutions are obtained for the degree densities and degree distribution of the pore networks generated by the model in the thermodynamic limit and shown that the networks exhibit similar properties to those observed in other complex networks. With the aim to study in more detail topological properties of these networks, the presence of soil pore community structures is studied. The detection of communities of pores, as groups densely connected with only sparser connections between groups, could contribute to understand the mechanisms of the diffusion phenomena in soils.

Soil is well recognized as a highly complex system. The interaction and coupled physical, chemical, and biological processes and phenomena occurring in the soil environment at different spatial and temporal scales are the main reasons for such complexity. There is a need for appropriate methodologies to characterize soil porous systems with an interdisciplinary character. Four different real soil samples, presenting different textures, have been modeled as heterogeneous complex networks, applying a model known as the heterogeneous preferential attachment. An analytical study of the degree distributions in the soil model shows a multiscaling behavior in the connectivity degrees, leaving an empirically testable signature of heterogeneity in the topology of soil pore networks. We also show that the power-law scaling in the degree distribution is a robust trait of the soil model. Last, the detection of spatial pore communities, as densely connected groups with only sparser connections between them, has been studied for the first time in these soil networks. Our results show that the presence of these communities depends on the parameter values used to construct the network. These findings could contribute to understanding the mechanisms of the diffusion phenomena in soils, such as gas and water diffusion, development and dynamics of microorganisms, among others.

This paper analyses empirical evidence of efforts to enable Spanish micro and small manufacturing companies to boost their labour productivity rates through the development of the main pillars of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) policies. This study aims to develop new approaches and sensibilities towards work from an ethical, values (virtues) and CSR perspective, showing how internal dimensions of CSR, such those related to relationships with employees and responsibility in processes and product quality, can improve labour performance and labour efficiency, thereby contributing to a better society. The results of a sample of 929 small businesses indicate that the social responsibility policies that most contributed to a short-term increase in labour productivity are those related to internal aspects of the company, in particular its involvement in the quality of processes and products, promotion of innovation and employee care. However, the impact on labour productivity of CSR policies related to external factors, such as relationship with stakeholders and environmental concern, could not be empirically proven in this paper.

Power supply unpredictable uctuations jeopardize the functioning of several types of current electronic systems. This work presents a power supply sensor based on a voltage divider followed by buffer-comparator cells employing just MOSFET transistors and provides a digital output. The divider outputs are designed to change more slowly than the thresholds of the comparators, in this way the sensor is able to detect voltage droops. The sensor is implemented in a 65nm technology node occupying an area of 2700?m2 and displaying a power consumption of 50?W. It is designed to work with no voltage reference and with no clock and aiming to obtain a fast response.

ABSTRACT. The present document analyzes and evaluates the environmental noise in the residential areas located at “La Estación” district, near the San Pablo Avenue, in the Coslada municipality (Madrid). The area considered in this project is very complete, once it covers different types of environmental noise (railway traffic, vehicular traffic, airport traffic, industrial noise of building systems, activities noise, etc), where noise sources may appear isolated or under several combinations. In order to evaluate the existing total noise, on one hand it is analyzed the residual noise in the study area, and on the other hand it is analyzed the specific and intermittent noise associated to isolated occurrences, such as the noise of the aircrafts and the noise of the trains, where the existence of components of tonality, low frequency and impulsiveness is studied individually. After obtaining the levels of total noise and residual noise in the target study area, the sound pressure level average index (LPm) of the analyzed samples estimates correctly the levels obtained in the sampling of long duration. On what concerns the measures carried out, it is detected the existence of components of tonality and low frequency in the registered aircrafts and trains passage. The sound levels of the study area are calculated. For that it is made a valuation of the Ld noise ratio, concerning the day period, and Le, concerning the afternoon period. The calculation tool used is the IMMI 6.3.1e programme. The validation of the map of sound levels obtained with the IMMI 6.3.1e is made. In order to get this validation, it is made a comparison between the levels calculated with the model and the levels measured “in situ” in the sampling points. Finally the uncertainty is obtained in each one of the measurements made in a second sampling “in situ”, correspondent to equivalent A-weighted continuous sound pressure level (LAeq,5 min), having in mind the possible deviations caused by the equipment of measure, meteorological conditions, essay’s execution procedures, etc.

ABSTRACT This research investigates the relationship between the geometric method used by Palazuelo and the architectural design’s process. Choosing this Spanish painter and sculptor as thread of this thesis is not fortuitous, since the architecture has an essential influence on his work. An influx that arrives in part through his academic training, as he was an architecture student at the School of Arts and Crafts of the city of Oxford (1933-1936). Furthermore his proposals designed closely linked to a built place, therefore conditioned by its traces. The working hypothesis formulated from texts written by authors like Victor Nieto Alcaide and Juan Daniel Fullaondo suggested an interconnection with organic architecture. As a check on the degree of depth in other published reviews, articles that explore the process that the artist developed during the production of his work, and penetrate into structural issues beyond formal domain have been selected. Following this pattern, along with a temporal dimension, assays by Santiago Amón, Carme Bonell, Valerio Bozal, Manuel J. Borja-Villel, Francisco Calvo Serraller, Claude Esteban, Julián Gállego, Teresa Grandas, Max Hölzer, George Limbour, Kevin Power and Carlos Rodriguez-Spiteri have been selected. Oral sources within an inherently environment close to his achievements, as Pere Casanovas and Soledad Lorenzo, are also added. In addition to people coincided with his accomplishments, such as Ramón Ayerza, Mariano Bayón, José Antonio Corrales, Luis Gordillo, Rafael Moneo, José Rodríguez-Spiteri and Antonio Tornero. From obtained access to the writings, books, sketches and abundant graphic and sculptural work that holds the Foundation painter, it has been able to develop a theoretical and geometric framework that have served as the basis for confronting these premises. This dissertation has been structured in a narrative that ⎯in addition to the previously mentioned studies⎯, begins with the foundations of Palazuelo thought. A structure built from his writings, where he defended a syncretism that reconciles the views of Western and Eastern cultures. In the following sections, his main graphic and sculptural works have been analyzed with particular emphasis on the productive method. A process that resists mere chronological enumeration, so the classification proposed in this investigation tries to be as faithful as possible to the spirit expressed by Palazuelo, based on bloodlines and coherences, to uncover the tools he used and to compare them with the architectural design process. This tour is completed with a final chapter that gathers the sixteen proposals and sixteen works most representative projects that illustrate the more direct approach that Palazuelo worked between geometric investigations and a given locus. For nearly four years, a detailed inventory and cataloguing of documents and works on paper, canvas and metal made by Palazuelo was developed. This research brings to light a set consisting of nearly four thousand works, mostly unpublished, that constitute the current archive of the aforementioned institution. Ultimately, this research builds a graph and geometric fabric referred to one of the most important Spanish artists of the twentieth century, interspersed by his theoretical thinking and achievements in drawings, models, sculptures and architectural proposals. Which allow establishing agreements and disagreements with the process of architecture to propose a new geometric interdisciplinary approach.
