Knowledge of the development of hydrographic networks can be useful for a number of research works in hydraulic engineering. We thus, intend to analyse the cartography regarding the first work that systematically encompasses the entire hydrographic network: Tomas Lopez’s Geographic Atlas of Spain (1787). In order to achieve this goal, we will first analyze –by way of the Geographic Information System (GIS) – both the present and referred historical cartographies. In comparing them, we will use the then-existing population centres that correspond to modern ones. The aim is to compare the following research variables in the hydrographic network: former toponyms, length of riverbeds and distance to population centres. The results of this study will show the variation in the riverbeds and the probable change in their denomination.

As a minor relevant part of hydraulic engineering, the fountains of our country are urban, functional and of great interest in the past. The relevancy of these fountains has gradually declined since the emergence of general water supply. However, in our environment, there are magnificent works of engineering very well studied and executed, that also represent good examples of art and historical interest. In this way, the Historical and Artistic Heritage Law of the Community of Madrid (Ley 3/2013), requests the councils, their study and categorization. Their technical design is well known since ancient times. Even the Romans were able to use pinpoint accuracy (just a few millimeters), to calculate the slopes of the underground pipes which supply water, in perfect conditions, to its target, and without using external sources of energy. In this cases, the water quality of which was obviously linked to the type of substrate, conditioned the settlements and even its use, that could be restricted to certain social classes. In some cases, the engineering works of these fountains were especially relevant for its uniqueness, monumentality and appearance. There are many architectural trends that come together in the studied fountains, which also contain of its own historical character. This research is focused on inventory categorization and characterization of a representative sample of 550 natural fountains in Madrid. It includes the detailed study of the variables used in its characterization, through inferential treatments, and the "ad hoc" experimental design of a methodology for the categorization and a 360 ° characterization, from the catchment to the spout. Finally, the research ends with the implementation of the designed methodology, through the study, categorization and characterization of a specific case. Although this research is focused on fountains from Madrid surroundings, the main value is that the purposed methodology can be extrapolated to to manyother cases. To highlight these ignored engineering works, and contribute to its preservation making easier their categorization and spreading their existence, set the main aim of this research.

The current research aims to analyse theoretically and evaluate a self-manufactured simple design for subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) emitter to avoid root and soil intrusion. It was composed of three concentric cylindrical elements: an elastic silicone membrane; a polyethylene tube with two holes drilled on its wall for water discharge; and a vinyl polychloride protector system to wrap the other elements. The discharge of the emitter depends on the change in the membrane diameter when it is deformed by the water pressure. The study of the operation of this emitter is a new approach that considers mechanical and hydraulic principles. Thus, the estimation on the membrane deformation was based on classical mechanical stress theories in composite cylinders. The hydraulic principles considered the solid deformation due to force based on water pressure and the general Darcy–Weisbach head-loss equation. Twenty emitter units, with the selected design, were handcrafted in a lathe and were used in this study. The measured pressure/discharge relationship for the emitters showed good agreement with that calculated by the theoretical approach. The variation coefficient of the handcrafted emitters was high compared to commercial emitters. Results from field evaluations showed variable values for the relative flow variation, water emission uniformity and relative flow rate coefficients, but no emitter was obstructed. Therefore, the current emitter design could be suitable for SDI following further studies to develop a final prototype.

The simulation of design basis accidents in a containment building is usually conducted with a lumped parameter model. The codes normally used by Westinghouse Electric Company (WEC) for that license analysis are WGOTHIC or COCO, which are suitable to provide an adequate estimation of the overall peak temperature and pressure of the containment. However, for the detailed study of the thermal-hydraulic behavior in every room and compartment of the containment building, it could be more convenient to model the containment with a more detailed 3D representation of the geometry of the whole building. The main objective of this project is to obtain a standard PWR Westinghouse as well as an AP1000® containment model for a CFD code to analyze the thermal-hydraulic detailed behavior during a design basis accident. In this paper the development and testing of both containment models is presented.
