Developing countries are experiencing unprecedented levels of economic growth. As a result, they will be responsible for most of the future growth in energy demand and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Curbing GHG emissions in developing countries has become one of the cornerstones of a future international agreement under the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC). However, setting caps for developing countries’ GHG emissions has encountered strong resistance in the current round of negotiations. Continued economic growth that allows poverty eradication is still the main priority for most developing countries, and caps are perceived as a constraint to future growth prospects. The development, transfer and use of low-carbon technologies have more positive connotations, and are seen as the potential path towards low-carbon development. So far, the success of the UNFCCC process in improving the levels of technology transfer (TT) to developing countries has been limited. This thesis analyses the causes for such limited success and seeks to improve on the understanding about what constitutes TT in the field of climate change, establish the factors that enable them in developing countries and determine which policies could be implemented to reinforce these factors. Despite the wide recognition of the importance of technology and knowledge transfer to developing countries in the climate change mitigation policy agenda, this issue has not received sufficient attention in academic research. Current definitions of climate change TT barely take into account the perspective of actors involved in actual climate change TT activities, while respective measurements do not bear in mind the diversity of channels through which these happen and the outputs and effects that they convey. Furthermore, the enabling factors for TT in non-BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) developing countries have been seldom investigated, and policy recommendations to improve the level and quality of TTs to developing countries have not been adapted to the specific needs of highly heterogeneous countries, commonly denominated as “developing countries”. This thesis contributes to enriching the climate change TT debate from the perspective of a smaller emerging economy (Chile) and by undertaking a quantitative analysis of enabling factors for TT in a large sample of developing countries. Two methodological approaches are used to study climate change TT: comparative case study analysis and quantitative analysis. Comparative case studies analyse TT processes in ten cases based in Chile, all of which share the same economic, technological and policy frameworks, thus enabling us to draw conclusions on the enabling factors and obstacles operating in TT processes. The quantitative analysis uses three methodologies – principal component analysis, multiple regression analysis and cluster analysis – to assess the performance of developing countries in a number of enabling factors and the relationship between these factors and indicators of TT, as well as to create groups of developing countries with similar performances. The findings of this thesis are structured to provide responses to four main research questions: What constitutes technology transfer and how does it happen? Is it possible to measure technology transfer, and what are the main challenges in doing so? Which factors enable climate change technology transfer to developing countries? And how do different developing countries perform in these enabling factors, and how can differentiated policy priorities be defined accordingly? vi Resumen Los paises en desarrollo estan experimentando niveles de crecimiento economico sin precedentes.

Some requirements for engineering programmes, such as an ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice, as well as an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility or an ability to communicate effectively, need new activities designed for measuring students’ progress. Negotiations take place continuously at any stage of a project and, so, the ability of engineers and managers to effectively carry out a negotiation is crucial for the success or failure of projects and businesses. Since it involves communication between individuals motivated to come together in an agreement for mutual benefit, it can be used to enhance these personal abilities. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the adequacy of mixing playing sessions and theory to maximise the students’ strategic vision in combination with negotiating skills. Results show that the combination of playing with theoretical training teaches students to strategise through analysis and discussion of alternatives. The outcome is then more optimised.

In this paper, a system that allows applying precision agriculture techniques is described. The application is based on the deployment of a team of unmanned aerial vehicles that are able to take georeferenced pictures in order to create a full map by applying mosaicking procedures for postprocessing. The main contribution of this work is practical experimentation with an integrated tool. Contributions in different fields are also reported. Among them is a new one-phase automatic task partitioning manager, which is based on negotiation among the aerial vehicles, considering their state and capabilities. Once the individual tasks are assigned, an optimal path planning algorithm is in charge of determining the best path for each vehicle to follow. Also, a robust flight control based on the use of a control law that improves the maneuverability of the quadrotors has been designed. A set of field tests was performed in order to analyze all the capabilities of the system, from task negotiations to final performance. These experiments also allowed testing control robustness under different weather conditions.

The Iberian pork industry is a typically Spanish industry. The associated image by the consumer to these products corresponds to products made from Iberian pigs in extensive farms (meadows), and fattened in open range. However, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, more than 70 percent of the Iberian pigs produced in Spain are raised on factory farms. The Iberian pork industry is in process of change, both by modifications resulting from the crisis in the sector, and the expected ones in the quality standard, recently agreed. In this environment where there is a significant reduction in trade margins in all links of the value chain of Iberian ham, becomes important to study its structure and operation, identifying the aspects that improve economic efficiency along the value chain and their concordance along it. Likewise, part of the consumers begins searching for quality products, they are interested in certain products that guarantee some sort of quality or production and processing practices, like organic products. There are several studies on various aspects of the Iberian pork industry, made by different institutions, such as universities, private institutions and some European projects. In general, their goal is focused on improving the Iberian hog production or on improving the elaboration of hams. The novelty of the research conducted in this PhD thesis lies in the study of the aspects that determine the economic efficiency of the value chain of Iberian ham from Guijuelo designation of origin, and the comparison between the features that organic or conventional production of Iberian ham brings to it. The objectives propound in this research are the improvement of the value chain of Iberian ham from Guijuelo designation of origin, through the study of its structural and operational problematic. The proposed specific objectives are the improvement of the economic efficiency Resumen in trade relations between the different links in the value chain, and the promotion of the supply of Iberian organic pork products, through the comparative study of conventional and organic productions. In order to achieve these objectives, the used methodology is the agrifood value chain, using as analysis tools the Delphi method, and a SWOT analysis of the Iberian pork industry. The primary sources of information come partly from the collaboration in the European project Q-Porkchains, coordinated by Dr. Jacques Trienekens, and partly from the questionnaires specially designed for the Delphi analysis performed. The secondary sources come from published academic papers, specialized journal articles and reports published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment. The research conclusions are as follows. Trade relations in the studied value chain are managed, as it is granted a great value to business relationships based on trust, both in the supply of products and in the sale in each link. However, the portfolio that is offered throughout the value chain is not properly managed, since the economic efficiency obtained for the same product is different in each link. Moreover, although the designation of origin of Guijuelo is a well-known brand, the effort made to acquire a collective quality trademark has not been entirely satisfactory, especially in the distribution link. Due to it, it is important to highlight that it is recommended to create a brand focused on quality, and indeed to change the firms integrating the vale chain, if the goal is not shared by all the companies. It is essential to ensure the quality of the product to the consumer, through the transmission of the available information related to the quality standard of Iberian pork products and of the Guijuelo Regulating Council. A detailed study of potential niche markets is required, in order to reach customers looking for a differentiated quality product as Iberian ham of Guijuelo designation of origin. It should be taken into consideration the group of allergy sufferers as potential customers, as they do not easily find pork products in the market free of allergens. Innovation is very important in this industry, and new products could be commercialized that help to shorten the value chain, as fresh acorn Iberian pork. Nowadays, the organic production of Iberian pork products is not significant. The operation is very similar in both conventional and organic production of Iberian pork products, except in the food received by Iberian hogs and the sort of medicinal treatments allowed in each production. The organic acorn Iberian pork production could be interesting for export. Acorn Iberian hams would have a well-known hallmark, which guarantees a traditional production, -as it is done in many extensive holdings of Iberian acorn-pigs-, and that is appreciated by consumers in other countries This niche of consumers could pay for differentiated quality products. Perhaps, this sort of production could solve the limitation to national scope of the quality standard of Iberian pork products. The lack of clarity and unanimity in the industry on the quality of Iberian pork products has been perceived in the agreed changes of the legislation as well as the interest of the processing industry in hams of quality categories which are not linked to extensive but intensive productions, due to their higher sales volume and better yields. This situation pushed "acorn pure Iberian " pigs farmers to split from the Iberian industry, where the importance of cross Iberian pig from intensive farms is growing so high that they can influence the negotiations and decisions taken inside and outside the industry.

The United Nations Climate Change Conference, Durban 2011, delivered a breakthrough on the international community's response to climate change. In the second largest meeting of its kind, the negotiations advanced, in a balanced fashion, the implementation of the Convention and the Kyoto Protocol, the Bali Action Plan, and the Cancun Agreements. The outcomes included a decision by Parties to adopt a universal legal agreement on climate change as soon as possible, and no later than 2015. One of the decisions adopted by COP 17 and CMP 7 regard to the land use, land-use change and forestry, and invites the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change to review and, if necessary, update supplementary methodologies for estimating anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions by sources and removals by sinks resulting from land use, land-use change and forestry activities under Article 3, paragraphs 3 and 4, of the Kyoto Protocol. Land degradation is a human-induced or natural process which negatively affects the productivity of land within an ecosystem. The direct causes of land degradation are geographically specific. Climate change, including changes in short-term variation, as well as long-term gradual changes in temperature and precipitation, is expected to be an additional stress on rates of land degradation. Book Topics: • Introduction to Climate Change and Land Degradation • Change Mitigation • Climate Change and Waste Land Restoration • Water Management and Planning • Erosion and Hydrological Restoration • Forest Fire Land Restoration • Polluted Soils Restoration • Combating Climate Change by Restoration of Degraded Land • Research Matters – Climate Change Governance • Advanced Statistics Climate Change and Restoration of Degraded Land is of interests to academics, engineers, consultans, designers and professionals involved in restoration of degraded lands projects.

Air pollution abatement policies must be based on quantitative information on current and future emissions of pollutants. As emission projections uncertainties are inevitable and traditional statistical treatments of uncertainty are highly time/resources consuming, a simplified methodology for nonstatistical uncertainty estimation based on sensitivity analysis is presented in this work. The methodology was applied to the “with measures” scenario for Spain, concretely over the 12 highest emitting sectors regarding greenhouse gas and air pollutants emissions. Examples of methodology application for two important sectors (power plants, and agriculture and livestock) are shown and explained in depth. Uncertainty bands were obtained up to 2020 by modifying the driving factors of the 12 selected sectors and the methodology was tested against a recomputed emission trend in a low economic-growth perspective and official figures for 2010, showing a very good performance. Implications: A solid understanding and quantification of uncertainties related to atmospheric emission inventories and projections provide useful information for policy negotiations. However, as many of those uncertainties are irreducible, there is an interest on how they could be managed in order to derive robust policy conclusions. Taking this into account, a method developed to use sensitivity analysis as a source of information to derive nonstatistical uncertainty bands for emission projections is presented and applied to Spain. This method simplifies uncertainty assessment and allows other countries to take advantage of their sensitivity analyses.

ABSTRACT During the second half of the twentieth century, New York experienced a launch of new spaces, changed or forgotten through the adoption of mechanisms, whether formal or informal, permanent or temporary, for the incorporation of spaces for public use in a limited and congested urban context. These assets are mediators between the public and private space, and are the physical result of negotiations between the urban legislation, the private interests of the developer and the demands of citizens. The dissertation examines a selection of projects, between 1950 and 2015, that incorporate remarkable spatial opportunities for collective use, which led to the creation of two types of spaces: “oasis-space”, those that enhance social interaction between patrons; and “vitrinespace”, space to be seen but not touched, where the user participates indirectly and does not promote any interaction, attracting an outside public and rejecting the local. Diversity of uses, social sensitivity, close supervision and ease of maintenance that enable small-scale “oasis spaces” are key when it comes to keeping the fragile and vulnerable balance of urban life. The investigation explains the contextualization of the projects in relation with the support of public politics and the cyclical context of constantly changing economics. The role of the New York mayor is key at the time of deciding the level of administrative support for the projects that occur at a point of overlap between the public and the private, which is why the thesis analyzes the projects in relationship to the transitions between the cities most influential mayors. Pressure from the housing market, private and political interests, excessive commercialization and programming of these spaces impede the slow and opaque process of incorporating them for public use in the city and compromise the true civic character open urban space. The research explores these factors by reflecting on the true meaning of the revitalization of the public, understood in relation to interactions it encourages and that occur outside of the intentions of the architectural project. The objective and scope of this study allows for reflecting on, discussing and exploring civic participation and use of the built environment, as a way to understand the evolution of social, economic, architectural and urban conditions of public space.
